How to make a yummy gato words Nguyen Thi Nam Phuong

No, you aren’t going to read about the gateau cakes at Tous Les Jours or Brodard. Instead, on your hands is a recipe for Vietnamese popular cake on Facebook. Curious yet? Read on to find out how to make it. INGREDIENTS 1 cup of Jealousy 100g of Insecurities ¼ cup of Laziness 1 bottle of Facebook Stalking 1 teaspoon of “Keyboard Heroes” skills (AHBP*) *Warning: This cake may poison their lives, so think carefully before showing off your masterpiece. *abbreviation for anh hung ban phim 4

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Mix Jealousy and Insecurities together. These two common ingredients are the basis of all GATO cakes. That’s why this cake is very popular these days. 2. Add Laziness into the mixture. With laziness, the Jealousy-Insecurities mixture in step 1 will dramatically increase in size. Remember to choose the ISO 9002 brand: Too Lazy To Improve Oneself But Always Have Time To Criticize Others. 3. Bake the mixture. This GATO cake tastes best with the oven called Facebook because of its heated functions like ‘critical statuses’ and ‘hurtful comments’. What about the temperature? The more heated comments/status are, the better the cake is. Finally, add the bottle of Facebook Stalking to maximize the result. 4. Smell the freshly baked cake yet? One final touch: decorate it with the AHBP skills That’s it. Share this spectacular GATO cake with your friends*. 5

Because brainy is the new sexy words Phan Dieu Hien

“I’m not a psychopath, I’m a high-functioning sociopath.”

Sherlock BBC, a British crime show, is a contemporary adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. This series is set in London modern time, telling the story about the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes assisted by his flatmate, Dr. John Watson, in solving countless crimes. This modern version of Sherlock Holmes played by Benedict Cumberbatch has reflected a cold and sarcastic genius who is constantly in a nerve-wracking game with his archenemy: Jim Moriarty, an insane criminal mastermind. “You need me, or you’re nothing. Because we’re just alike, you and I. Except you’re boring. You’re on the side of the angels.” – Jim Moriarty Moriarty is the perfect image of Sherlock on the dark side, the incarnation of a crazy, intelligent ego minus the virtue. On the other hand, Sherlock’s humanity, utterly absent in Moriarty, is in his recognition of love and trust, far above the standard nerve-wracking (adj) causing stress or anxiety

that normal people can understand. Their eternal conflict is a game where only one can live and the other is burned. We live in the era where people tend to worship the brilliant villain instead of the foolish heroes. Joker, Norman Bates, Hannibal, Loki, Gordon Gecko and many other evil geniuses are surprisingly considered the most charismatic characters. Same goes to Sherlock BBC, a combination of excellent acting, plots and a good old-fashioned villain. People are fascinated by their intellectual and cunning performance of wit. There is no distinct boundary between good and evil, just for brilliance’s sake only.

Sherlock BBC will not be such a phenomenon without the emotional and human value of life. The cold-hearted genius actually is one of the most affectionate men willing to do anything to protect his precious friends. He makes deduction, he solves mystery, he plays game with a criminal mastermind, and he is still one of the most brilliant characters in fans’ heart. What more can you ask for?

“There were times when I didn’t even think you were human, but let me tell you this. You were the best man, the most human… human being that I’ve ever known...” – Dr. Watson. cunning (adj) foxy

Body painting Confession of the painted words Huynh Thai Uyen Khanh

My life is full of colors and creativeness. Some call me aesthetical, others think I’m dramatically gaudy. Well, I don’t care as I feel utterly proud of representing the artists’ ideas, inspiration and hope from the moment these various brilliant paints and pigments are covered all over me. Gaudy (adj.) unpleasantly bright in colour or decoration

10

When people look at me, figure out the implied arts and give me compliments, a sense of excitement embraces me. It does feel a bit awkward with no clothes on, or sometimes a little bit itchy as rolling down on canvas. But those initial feelings soon pass away, leaving myself with glamorous pictures portraying freedom, spiritual religion, or human inspiration. My most memorable moment was the time my partners and I were blended in a motorcycle show. We were disguised in basically every single part of the motorbike including the wheels, frame and suspension. It was indeed the most realistic painting ever. I try to enjoy every moment of creativeness, from craft sketching to three to four-hour brushing. The whole process makes me feel like a true representative, not only for modern art, but also for the unique culture and human liberation that body painting is incarnating. Incarnate (adj.) in human form Aesthetical (adj.) having the sense of beauty

BRING OUT

your FLAWSOMESESS words Tran Que Chi

What is “flawsomeness”, you may ask? Tic..toc..tic..toc… Your curiosity has won! What’s your next move? Dictionary, of course! But even this friend failed you. Don’t worry then, because you may be interested in this brand-new combination:

Flawsome = Flaw + Awesome

The reality is nobody’s perfect and your flaws sometimes set you apart, of course if you’re confident enough to embrace them. I’m a huge fan of the pixie haircut and I’ve had it since I was allowed to make my own decisions. People may see no femininity in me, though, I believe that we feel most beautiful when we believe in who we are. Your flaws don’t hold you back, they set you free. Facing too much pressure from parents, peers or even your sweethearts, sometimes you hide your inner self. Remember, everyone does have their own awesomeness and flaws. Starting from tomorrow, don’t be discreet, stop sheltering your flaws, take a deep breath and just be yourself. This world surely needs some more flawsomeness. Discreet (adj.) try not to cause attention by keeping something secret

MOYES AND MU:

WHERE TO GO? words Nguyen Tuan Anh

The screams get louder across Old Trafford as the football season reaches its ending point. Impatientfans blame David Moyes, Manchester United’s current manager, for destroying the club and tarnishing its glorious history. But does Moyes deserve all these criticism? Not quite so. Surprisingly, MU’s ex manager, Sir Alex Ferguson (SAF) should be (somewhat) responsible for many issues at Old Trafford this season. The experienced SAF gained 14

such a great respect and support from the MU’s players that they were willing to play for him under any circumstances. His influences in the European football world have caused MU’s opponents to tumble before the game even started. And now, although David Moyes does not inherit those privileges, he still deserves some time to earn the same respect from his players and opponents as his predecessor SAF had. Whether you like it or not, David Moyes is still the suitable choice for the club, compared to other potential candidates such as Mourinho or Guardiola. For both of them to succeed, their new clubs must either already possess a strong squad (Bayern Munich) or a huge budget for the transfer market (Chelsea). Unfortunately, MU currently lacks both conditions, that’s why Moyes became one of the few managers capable of helping this club live through the hardship. (This article was written in March 2014. Moyes is now no longer a part of MU. He was fired on 22 April 2014, less than a year after succeeding SAF.) 15

A ‘ studyholics exam diary words Pham Ngoc Bao Thoa

DAY 1 Finals? Humm… I must get HDs, come on, HDs HDs!!! – feel so determined! Oh dear, so excited, oh gosh extremely excited, over excited, can’t even describe how excited I am! Oh my HDs, my biggest motivations! I’m coming to you, Marketing, woohoo…

DAY 5 To be honest, I myself recognize that I’m a hardworking student - study from the early mornings till midnights, then sleep, wake up and continue to study, then eat, then study again! Haizz, what a repetitive boring cycle, study, study and study … “Stop complaining, shut your mouth, open your eyes wide and study!!!” Sorry for that but I just self-talk sometimes. Humm, maybe I should go around the house and take the slides with me.

16

17

Day 7

Day 10

Gosh, only a week left, what I’m gonna do? - feel extremely nervous. But hold on, where are the motivations? Let me see, HDs, tuition fees, graduation day... Oh my god, I look at Facebook pages, exam theme is everywhere - statuses, cover timelines, RMIT confessions, what a spirit! I’d better put the avatar “Keep on and study hard” and “Sport Hall” cover on for more motivations. – feel convinced to gain studying spirit back.

3 pm, lying on my bed, dim light, “three levels of products: core, actual and augmented…” – well, I know I’d better sleep. Tomorrow will be a long day of studying and I should save energy. Marketing, since when you have become my obsession?

Day 9 I have to confess that it is brave to leave the most difficult subject to the last! From the morning to night, only one word sticks in my head: “Macroeconomics” but, honestly what is it about? Shift left, shift right, shift upward, shift downward? – feel so numb.

18

Day 13 2 am - Oh man, my friends told me that the exam structure of this semester is difficult, God bless me, 31 hours until the exams – feel pity while studying like buffalos.

Day 14 2 am – Letter to Sport Hall “Dear Mr Sport Hall, after 353 hours of studying with sweat and tears to swallow 4 books, I do not know if a single piece of knowledge is still in my head or not. My face is covered with tons of “flowers” and my eyes are like those of a rock-star, with thick black eye-liner. See you tomorrow. Kind regards. “ – feel like a Wonder Woman.

LOGISTIC ADVENTURE words Trinh Le Dung

LogistiCom 2014 is the first national competition on logistics held at RMIT Vietnam and the university’s Business Club hopes it spreads the interest of logistics and supply chain to young people. Besides RMIT Vietnam, the competition attracts many other universities including the Foreign Trade University (FTU), International University (IU), University of Economics (UEH), and also universities in Ha Noi, including the Ha Noi University of Technology. The competition includes three rounds, with a video clip, amazing race and case study required. The amazing race held on 19 April 2014, will be the key point of the competition, requiring participants to apply their knowledge and skills in real life. Each team will divide themselves into two smaller groups; one to take goods and the other to take goods’ packaging. After that, they will meet up to pack everything and deliver to the final destination. Participants and organisers did try their best to bring us the first logistics competition ever at RMIT Vietnam. The competition came to an end on 26 April 2014, with Team ADEW from the

University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City claiming first prize. Second and third places went to Team Spring Santa (RMIT Vietnam) and The Red (Foreign Trade University) respectively. 21

modern art breaking loose words Nguyen Hanh Minh Chau

Yep, that is what printed on the back of Banksy’s book. Many sigh when this name is mentioned, others scream with passion, but ironically enough, nobody knows who Banksy truly is. Crawling around urban streets in disguise, the pseudonymous Banksy paints, applies graffiti stencils and political commentary on any blank wall he feels soulless. Police call him a vandal, critics smirk at his seemingly-clever-foridiots paintings, but none of those deteriorates Banksy’s fame. His denials of hyper capitalism, elitism, war, and especially himself, set forth for street art to explore its limitless adventures of challenges and spontaneity. Smirk (v.) to smile with one side of the lips lifted up Spontaneity (n.) happening or done in a natural, sudden way without being forced

Veggie story my

words Duong Quang Ngoc

“Mom, I’ve decided to be a vegetarian!” “What? Who in this world would deny the temptation of pork, beef and chicken???” “Well, many do. Ellen DeGeneres: your favorite host. Carrie Underwood: your favorite country singer. So why not give it a try?” Indeed, my family were all hesitant by such a decision at first. But I’m now confident enough to say it’s been one of my “healthiest” decision ever. I used to be a hard-core fan of KFC but now, whenever ordering something, I always add “No Meat”. The process of being a vegetarian was unarguably challenging because of the irresistible temptation of meat, but once you successfully overcome it, you feel ecstatically accomplished. 30

I lost two kilograms after a month of tofu, nuts, beans and mushrooms. I felt my body lighter and my mind fresher, as if there was a new breath of air in my life. People, at least my friends, gaze at me in admiration. As a vegetarian, I usually let my mind fly with some interesting ideas about a no-meat world where: Cows, goats and pigs would become popular pets. Most recipe books would be useless and Gordon Ramsay would no longer rule. Livestock farms would turn into forest and fields would be a pleasant photoshooting destination. There would be a no-animal-killing law. That being said, this fiction is long to be achieved. Anyway, some say people opting to be vegetarians are intrinsically smart. I don’t know if this rings true but whichever diet you choose to have, it’s all about your perspective, goal and preference. 31

Go viral. Photos, memes, quotes, advertising videos. All can be spread among friends and reach people across the globe. Some may have meanings, some may not. People are clever and sensitive enough to choose what deserve to be remembered. And this poem is the one.

MEOP & POEM? Your choice.

The world we are living in and the generation we are representing can be somehow reversed in a blink of an eye. Blink. We see nothing but laziness. Blink. We see hard work. Blink. We feel hopeless at the plain reality. Blink. We feel so bright about our future. The point is everything depends on our points of view. Bad things may not always bring bad results. It’s you who have the power to change them. Reading reversely is of course harder than the usual flow. Just like the way staying positive is always harder than being negative when things go wrong.

words Vu Do Mai Uyen

32

But the sense of achieving what we strive for through difficulty is awesome. Just like the way you finish reading this poem. 33

Forgetting about that time, Will not be easy, but we will try. Changing our world for the better Is something we never did. Giving up Was how we handled our problems. Working hard Was a joke. We knew that People thought we couldn’t come back That might be true, Unless we turn things around (Read from bottom to top now)

34

Our generation will be known for nothing. Never will anybody say, We were the peak of mankind. That is wrong, the truth is Our generation was a failure. Thinking that We actually succeeded Is a waste. And we know Living only for money and power Is the way to go. Being loving, respectful, and kind Is a dumb thing to do.
