ANNUAL REPORT 2015

RECONCILING MINISTRIES NETWORK

GREETINGS IN THE NAME OF THE ONE WHO IS CALLED LOVE.

2015 was an exciting and inspiring year for LGBTQ persons both in the church and in the broader culture. Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) celebrated its national convocation with the Methodist Federation for Social Action (MFSA) in San Antonio, Texas with a record attendance where our movement celebrated, prayed, and worked together for an inclusive United Methodist Church. 2015 also saw the re-branding of RMN’s Transgender Extension Ministry into the flourishing new United Methodist Alliance for Transgender Inclusion (UMATI), establishing itself as a stronger platform within RMN to provide ever-increasing ministries of justice and inclusion for trans-specific communities within The United Methodist Church. Alongside a growing UMATI infrastructure, RMN joyfully welcomed two new staff persons: Bridget Cabrera, Deputy Director and Kathy Cheney Egan, Director of Fund Development. Finally, we expanded our work in the US South and laid the groundwork for work in the African Central Conferences that really exploded in 2016. As our programmatic offerings deepened, our Organizing staff facilitated the growth of our network as we added 73 new Reconciling Communities and communities as well as 3,453 new Reconciling united Methodist individuals. It is a joy to offer you a very brief snapshot of what you accomplished through RMN in 2015 and I want to say how privileged I feel to be able to serve as executive director with a great staff team and a board of directors that is second-to-none. We all are grateful to be a piece of a much larger tapestry of justice that God is weaving for the well-being of human kind and all that is in heaven and on earth. We thank you for continued support and for your prayers—without you, none of this could happen.

GATHER AT THE RIVER A SNAPSHOT CURRENT: A YOUTH EXPERIENCE AT GATHER AT THE RIVER We were thrilled to have our first youth track at a convocation gathering. Led by Shelley Walters, current provided a creative space for youth from across the U.S. to explore, interact, grow, and worship within an inclusive Christian community.

ENGAGING SPEAKERS & DIVERSE WORKSHOPS With worship leaders and speakers like Dr. Marcia McFee, Mark Miller, Jennifer Knapp, Rev. Grace Imathiu, and Prof Peter Storey, worship was a deeply compelling complement to the wide-range of workshops addressing issues such as intersectionality, mass incarceration, LGBTQI asylum, reproductive justice and more!

RECORD BREAKING PARTICIPATION With over 700 participants at this joint convocation with our partners at Methodist Federation for Social Action (MFSA), Gather at the River was our largest convocation yet!

EXTENSION MINISTRY PRE-DAY As a richly diverse movement of progressive United Methodists, RMN’s extension ministries gathered their communities for a pre-day dedicated to community, skill building, and organizing around conversations centered on specific identities in the movement such as people of color, trans people, parents, clergy, and young people.

TRIBUTE TO GENE LEGGET Opening worship began with a tribute to the late Gene Legget who was removed from ministry in the early 70s due to discrimination based on his sexual orientation. He protested for years after by kneeling at the altar at Travis Park UMC where his annual conference was held - the very church we were gathered in. Throughout the event, individuals paid tribute to him by kneeling at the altar in his honor.

TRANS AND UNITED METHODIST On May 11, 2015, the extension ministry formerly known as Transgender Extension Ministry was rebranded as United Methodist Alliance for Transgender Inclusion (UMATI). Leadership desired a name that reflected the group’s religious grounding as a people called Methodists who are not interested in relinquishing their baptisms, nor surrendering their church to the forces of fear and oppression. They also sought a name that would signal commitment to collaborate with an ever-widening circle of individuals and organizations in the struggle for transgender justice and communicate their hope that people of all gender identities and expressions will one day experience full inclusion in the life and leadership of The United Methodist Church and society.

LET NO ONE PUT ASUNDER History was made in the United States of America as the right to marry was guaranteed to all same-sex couples in the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling. This monumental decision by the Supreme Court marked an important milestone in the advancement of the rights of LGBTQ persons everywhere, even as those in The United Methodist Church must continue to advocate to have their relationships formally recognized by the church.

MAKING GLOBAL CONNECTIONS In partnership with Fellowship Global, Reconciling Ministries Network engaged in a trip to Abidjan, Ivory Coast to better understand the basic concerns for The United Methodist community in that region. The LGBTQ persons we met with expressed a strong fear for the well-being of their community, especially in light of the church’s ongoing discrimination and lack of sanctuary. The community at large also shared about the ongoing challenges in regards to HIV/AIDS, poverty among women and children, and a lack of access to theological training for pastors. Later in the year, Dennis Akpona, RMN’s Central Conferences Coordinator, attended the Liberia Partners Summit where he was able to build relationship with the United Methodist Liberian community. Both of these experiences were the foundation for two fruitful trips in 2016 to address the theological needs expressed by Methodists in the Ivory Coast and Liberia.

BIBLICAL OBEDIENCE, COMPLAINTS, & RESOLUTIONS

BISHOP MELVIN TALBERT, JOE OPENSHAW, AND BOBBY PRINCE 2015 was a very busy year for Methodists practicing Biblical Obedience. More clergy than ever said “yes” to officiating at same-sex weddings despite the ongoing disrciminatory policies in The UMC. Churches opened their sanctuaries to same-sex couples and lay United Methodists rallied to support LGBTQ and ally lay leaders, clergy, ordination candidates, and couples. Below are just some of the complaints that were resolved in 2015. Great harm was done in the name of the church to those listed here and so many others, but Reconcilng United Methodists showed up with financial support, spiritual solidarity, and physical presence wherever the Spirit led, modeling church at its best.

Michigan. After serving faithfully for three years and gaining the affection of his congregation, Rev. Hutchison was removed from his ministerial position because of his relationship to his partner, Monty. Just a few days later, United Methodist clergy and lay members rallied to support Rev. Hutchison and his partner Monty as they celebrated their marriage. Later in the month, a protest of his removal from Cassopolis UMC occurred outside of the office of Bishop Deborah Kiesey where the message was simple, “Stop the Harm!”

REV. BENJAMIN DAVID HUTCHISON to place upon Rev. Garber, Reconciling United Methodists contributed to the Clergy Defense Fund which allowed for full financial coverage of the amount Rev. Garber would have otherwise lost for simply being in ministry to her members. Rev. Dr. John D. Copenhaver, Prof. Emeritus at Shenandoah University, was suspended from ministry for three months for officiating at the wedding of Sarah and Rev. Delyn Celec who married in part to care for their niece and two nephews in need of family following the murder of the children’s mother. A complaint was filed against him shortly after.

REV. BENJAMIN DAVID HUTCHISON On July 13th, 2015 Rev. Benjamin Hutchison, a young AME pastor serving a United Methodist congregation, was told he must choose between resigning or being fired

workers in Winter Park, FL at Aloma Methodist Early Childhood Learning Center were unexpectedly fired in April 2015 despite being lauded as gifted and beloved employees. After rumors spread that the two may be a couple, they were each given an option: stop being gay or lose your job. Their jobs were terminated after this uncompromising ultimatum. The Florida Conference released a supportive statement of Kelly and Jaci saying they believe any “termination based solely on sexual orientation would violate a person’s civil rights.” This statement is in line with The UMC resolution which condemns “actions rooted in homophobia and heterosexism, including violence, threats, ridicule, humiliation, discrimination, isolation, and rejection.” Unfortunately, until The United Methodist Church puts an end to teaching that “homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching,” we can be sure that the spiritual and financial harm enacted upon employees of United Methodist communities will continue.

ALTAR FOR ALL A MILESTONE REACHED IN THE RECONCILING MOVEMENT AFTER THE SCOTUS RULING FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY

A spike in individual and congregational commitments to providing an altar for all occurred after marriage equality swept the nation. By the end of 2015’s summer, the total number of churches that opened their doors for samesex weddings - despite the denomination’s prohibitions surpassed 100. We celebrate these congregations practicing Biblical Obedience as they refuse to discriminate against those seeking a Methodist sanctuary to celebrate their love.

Reconciling United Methodists Respond to RFRA legislation In 2015, we saw a surge in anti-LGBTQ religious refusal bills across the country threatening protection for queer and trans people in regards to non-discrimination laws, marriage, adoption, health services, student life, and more. Reconciling Ministries Network partnered with other organizations such as Believe Out Loud, More Light Presbyterians, Equality North Carolina, and Equality Florida to help keep these bills from being passed. Reconciling United Methodists across the country joined in the work by writing about their progressive

Christian beliefs, showing up at key events to witness in love, attending rallies, writing key leaders, and participating in trainings. Thank you for putting your faith into action both inside the walls of the church and beyond!
