A year of challenge, opportunity, and growth By Matt Berryman, Executive Director Dear Fellow Reconcilers: 2014 was a year of challenge, opportunity, and growth. In 2013, we were challenged by the unjust trial and de-credentialing of Rev. Frank Schaefer but overjoyed to celebrate his reinstatement in 2014. While The United Methodist Church continues to threaten Church censure and punishment for those who practice Biblical Obedience, many just resolutions were reached around the connection. While these actions of Biblical Obedience presented pain and challenge for those involved and for all us, they provided opportunities for us all to witness greater incremental change as our movement approaches the General Conference in 2016. We are certainly in a different place than we were at the General Conference of 2012. So much change—a sign that God has already settled this matter. RMN was present in Ferguson, Missouri both in the days following Michael Brown’s shooting as well as on the day after the non-indictment of his assailant. We were present because we know that the #BlackLivesMatter movement, which was started by three black queer women, calls us to intersectional solidarity. At Reconciling Ministries Network, we continue to affirm that racial justice cannot be separated from LGBTQ justice, and that Biblical Obedience not only calls us to prophetic action within the church around justice for LGBTQ persons, but also to prophetic action at the intersections of oppression and the relationships between racism, homophobia, and transphobia. We took you with us as we joined our kindred in the work of advocacy and ministry.

In the summer of 2014, RMN was very pleased to inaugurate “Y’all Means All: A Southern Initiative.” We saw our greatest growth taking place in the US South with the addition of many new Reconciling Communities as well as a very large increase in Reconciling United Methodists from the US South. With your faithful support we were able to promote Helen Ryde and Laura Young to full-time in the Southeastern and Southcentral Jurisdictions. As they seek to cover these two jurisdictions where the majority of US Methodists worship, we will provide them with part-time Field Associates to make greater strides toward grassroots change. It’s working! Thank you. Without your love, your prayers, your support, and your ministry where you are, we would not be as strong nor as faithful. You have enabled RMN to grow and to flourish—to be recognized as a lead organization in the movement for LGBTQ justice. Thank you for your faith which continues to minister to our entire staff—we know you are with us every step of the way in this ongoing work of God.

2014 IN REVIEW A GLIMPSE INTO THE TOP STORIES OF A FULL YEAR

We give thanks for the ministries of Biblical Obedience by the all the saints whose lives continue to inspire us to press on in faith. Bishop McLee and Rev. McElvaney The movement for full inclusion lost two inspiring leaders this year. Bishop Martin McLee the first active Bishop in The UMC to categorically declare he would not prosecute pastors for officiating at same-sex weddings, died on September 6, 2014. Rev. Bill McElvaney who had a complaint filed against him for officiating the wedding of his two long-time friends, died on August 24, 2014. Reconciling Ministries Network is immensely grateful for the lives of both of these leaders who each left behind a lifetime of ministry modeling the pursuit of justice in the church and beyond.

The Connectional Table’s Human Sexuality Task Force hosts two out of three of its public conversations on human sexuality in response to organizing by Love Prevails.

President Obama signed an Executive Order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

RMN African Central Conferences work takes flight Through a partnership with Global Fellowship, RMN celebrates our first trip to Côte d’Ivoire where our team met with local LGBTQ advocates to build relationship and discuss future work together. Dennis Akpona, RMN African Central Conferences Coordinator, also established a growing web of support among United Methodist communities in the US, connecting with over 50 congregations who expressed interest in being a part of ministry with the global Methodist community.

Rev. Schaefer is reinstated The Judicial Council rules in favor of modifying the penalty of the church trial that revoked Rev. Frank Schaefer’s ministerial credentials for performing the legal marriage of his son to another man in 2007. He is reintstated as an Elder in full connection and appointed to Isla Vista Student Ministry in Isla Vista, California.

Dr. Monica Corsaro and Rainier UMC support Seattle-based Scoutmaster, Geoff McGrath, after the Boy Scouts of America revoked his registration for being openly gay. As a result of this nationally recognized support, The Boy Scouts of America went on to strip Rainer UMC of its charter.

SB1062 in Arizona Arizona “Religious Freedom” bill is vetoed by Governor Jan Brewer after national protest. SB 1062 would have offered a legal defense for individuals and businesses facing discrimination lawsuits if they proved they had acted on a “sincerely held religious belief.”

A CALL FOR JUSTICE IN FERGUSON

“If you have been asking, ‘What can I do?’ I believe the best answer is to just make the first step.” In August of 2014,

the city of Ferguson, Missouri seized the attention of the nation when Michael Brown, an unarmed 18 year old black man was shot and killed by white police officer, Darren Wilson. The coupling of the tragedy of a young man’s death with the longstanding racial tension in Ferguson stirred the local community to call for racial justice by protesting every night for weeks on end. The tension between the militarized police force and the protesters struck a profound resemblance to the pains of the Civil Rights Movement. The use of tear-gas, intimidation, and the arrests of journalists recording the events revealed deeper and troubling issues of power and prejudice at play in the local community. The events in Ferguson ignited a nationwide conversation about the status of racism in America and the need for nationwide reform in the criminal justice system. RMN Board Director Rev. Dr. Pamela Lightsey, Executive Director Matthew Berryman, and other Reconciling Ministries Network staff members visited Ferguson to be in ministerial solidarity and to join the call for an end to racial injustices in our country. Following is an excerpt of a reflection written by Rev. Dr. Lightsey on her first trip to Ferguson. “Bishop Mel Talbert has urged us to practice ‘Biblical Obedience.’ Though the context of his urging is specifically related to justice and full inclusion within The United Methodist Church for LGBTQ persons I hear his plea more broadly aim. Succinctly put, it requires us, according to Micah 6:8; “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” I’m practicing Biblical Obedience in Ferguson. This call to Biblical Obedience is not and cannot be

solely for the purpose of LGBTQ rights. It must address oppression wherever it’s tenacious tentacles grip the lives of God’s people and Earth itself. This is why we must all work together and use our voices against oppression. As a womanist scholar I always seek to advance wholeness for people of this global community. This is why we “love struggle.” Like the young protestors marching down W. Florissant, who sing, “We’re young. We’re strong. We’re marching all night long!” our love for the struggle is not because we enjoy suffering but because we know we are wrestling power out of the hands of the oppressor… AND. THAT. WE. SHALL. PREVAIL. One of the things that keep coming to my mind while I am in Ferguson is “safe space.” I think safe space is important to have whenever possible. But as I am literally walking in front of police armed with tear gas, rifles, billy clubs, and riot shields, I’m convinced that if you are really serious about ministry you must be willing to walk in some pretty unsafe spaces. You must especially do that while looking at those who are seen as your enemy—in this case the police—who are as we all are, imperfect. My struggle goes well beyond individual police but instead to an entire police system that is daily strategizing to deny justice to American citizens. No one can tell me that denying freedom of the press as I have personally witnessed is not a categorical denial of justice. No one can tell me that the killing of an unarmed man or the beating of an unarmed woman ought not unequivocally require a thorough and transparent investigation...” If you have been asking, “What can I do?” I believe the best answer is to just make the first step.”


2014 COMPLAINTS, TRIALS, & RESOLUTIONS PENNSYLVANIA In April of 2007, Rev. Frank Schaefer officiated at his son’s wedding and in 2013 a complaint was filed against him for that reason. After facing a trial and having his ministerial credentials withdrawn, the appeals committee of the Northeastern Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church reinstated him to clergy in good standing in June. A following Judicial Council ruling in October affirmed the reinstatement by the appeals committee. Rev. Frank Schaefer is now serving at Isla Vista Student Ministry in Santa Barbara, CA. In the same conference, as an act of support for Rev. Frank Schaefer and all LGBTQ persons, a group of 33 Eastern Pennsylvania clergy members (along with 19 UMC clergy from other conferences participating by proxy and 21 clergy from other faith traditions – 74 in total) co-officiated a same-sex wedding at Arch Street UMC in Philadelphia on November 9, 2013. A group of clergy and laity filed a complaint against the group and a Just Resolution was met which required all parties to engage in two organized sessions of dialogue regarding LGBTQ inclusion.

TEXAS Rev. Bill McElvaney, a retired UMC pastor and seminary president known for his social justice advocacy, officiated a same-sex wedding for a couple who had been together for 53 years for which a complaint was filed against him. Rev. McElvaney died on August 24th at the age of 86. His life-long commitment to love and justice is remembered gratefully by all who had the opportunity to know him and benefit from his PACIFIC NORTHWEST Rev. Cheryl A. Fear and Rev. Gordon Hutchins had complaints filed against them for officiating at same-sex ceremonies. Both pastors were faced with a 24-hour suspension without pay.

NEW YORK Rev. Dr. Thomas Ogeletree had a complaint filed against him for performing his son’s wedding in October 2012. In March of 2014, Bishop McLee dismissed all charges with no conditions and offered the following statement: “I call for and commit to cessation of trials for conducting ceremonies which celebrate homosexual unions or performing same-gender wedding ceremonies and instead offer a process of theological, spiritual and ecclesiastical conversation.” Rev. Sara Thompson Tweedy also had a complaint filed against her with the accusation of her being “a self-avowed practicing homosexual.” The complaint was eventually dismissed. Rev. Tweedy told UM New Service that she doesn’t deny she is a lesbian but she wouldn’t describe herself as “self-avowed practicing.” She explained her frustrations with the language: “What’s the equivalent in the heterosexual world? ‘Self-avowed practicing’ perpetuates the injustice committed against queer people, which is that we have been reduced to our sexual acts…There is so much more to marriage than that and so much more to being a human being.” MICHIGAN AREA

Rev. Mike Tupper and Rev. Ed Rowe both had complaints filed against them for officiating at same-sex weddings. Their complaints were handled by Bishop Deborah Kiesey who settled the complaint by initiating a creative approach to a Just Resolution which required the two pastors to: “Form a design team with clergy and lay persons from across the Michigan Area, including LGBTQ persons. The team is charged with planning, implementation and resourcing an area-wide series of events using a ‘Truth and Reconciliation’ model at which LGBTQ and other interested United Methodists can have a safe place to tell their stories. These events will have the stated goal of reduding our church’s harmful rhetoric and actions towards LGBTQ persons. These events will be planned to occur over the next 18 months.”
