A note From EXECUTIVE director Matt Berryman

“The ripple effect of each Reconciling Community’s intentional proclamation of love and justice knows no bounds.”

hen I consider all of the movement’s accomplishments in 2014, I am filled with deep gratitude for the individuals and communities that make up this Network. The array of talents, voices, and contributions illuminate the beauty of the diverse gifts of God. Each of you, in your various ways of contributing to a more just and inclusive church, act as a witness to God’s presence with us. Over the last year alone, we have seen more than 75 Reconciling Communities proclaim that they stand against our denomination’s discriminatory policies and welcome all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. For every community that becomes Reconciling, countless individuals, LGBTQ people and allies, are able to claim and be claimed by their spiritual home. Each of these communities also acts as a witness 2 Katalyst

to the larger church and society as a whole. The ripple effect of each Reconciling Community’s intentional proclamation of love and justice knows no bounds. Alongside an infinite list of onthe-ground achievements this year, your support has also enabled us to significantly increase our impact at RMN headquarters. We’ve been able to work alongside you at more Annual Conferences than ever, hire more staff to meet the increasing needs created by a growing movement, and broaden our work to incorporate intersectional justice that deepens our postures of welcome. Having the resources to visit Ferguson to march in solidarity and amplify voices of those speaking against systemic racism in our country is of vital importance to our intersectional advocacy. I stand amazed at what we are able to accomplish when we follow

the Spirit’s lead together and give thanks for the ways we care for one another in this movement. Despite our church’s policies, we know that every individual is beloved and valuable. I look forward to another year of building one another up in this truth as we continue in the work of Biblical Obedience for the transformation of the church and world. Thank you for all you do.

A note From deputy director Bridget cabrera

“I’m so proud to work alongside each of you who continue giving yourselves to ministries of justice and relationship.”

I

feel so blessed to be serving as the new deputy director at RMN. As I settle in to Chicago from my recent move with my wife from New York, I am already dreaming of the possibilities ahead of us as a movement. It’s an honor to be a part of this work while we are in this most critical moment as a denomination and as a Network. I believe that the faithful witness of lay people, clergy, and Reconciling Communities are making a difference in individual lives and in The United Methodist Church. The momentum of justice is visible throughout the country and our continued work through legislation, living as the church we believe in, and acts of Biblical Obedience, is helping to lead the way for our denomination to follow suite. As we continue in this big-picture work, I am eager to get to know each of you. Through my travels to Reconciling Communities,

work with our talented regional organizers, and through each of the Extension Ministries, I will be hoping to hear your stories, share about the ways you can make a difference at RMN, and talk with you about the possibilities for our future as a movement. I hope to meet many of you at our next biennial convocation, Gather at the River, in San Antonio next August. With an emphasis on the ways that justice in sexuality and gender are inseparable from other aspects of our identities like race, ethnicity, ability, or class, we will grow together in broadening our understanding of justice-making.

proud to be a part of this work, and to work alongside each of you who continue giving yourselves to ministries of justice and relationship. I know I join in a movement that has been faithfully witnessing for years on end. I look forward to journeying with you as we hold hope together that The United Methodist Church can and will live into Christ’s inclusive love.

A number of challenges certainly remain for us as we seek to change the policies of The United Methodist Church for the inclusion of all. We continue to bear the brunt of our church’s struggle to move forward, but I am grateful that we do it together. I’m so Katalyst 3

Ministry with out Fear a Southern Queer Revival RMN’S strategic initiative to shape the south by Matt Berryman, executive director

W

hile public support for LGBTQ equality has increased dramatically in the US, southern states tell a challenging, but hopeful story. The South is home to one-third of all LGBTQ persons but is historically under-funded in terms of pro-LGBTQ organizing and advocacy. In addition, conservative Christian voices continue to exert wide influence in a region where religion is threaded prominently into the fabric of life. The UMC is the third largest Christian denomination in the US and the majority of its members are located in the South. In fact, the South is home to twice the number of Methodists found in the Western, North Central, and Northeastern Jurisdictions combined. There are more in the North Georgia Conference alone than in the entire Western Jurisdiction! And while the number of southern Reconciling individuals and communities remains proportionally low

relative to other regions, those trends are changing—a revival has already begun! RMN deepened its partnerships with the southern church in the last two years to reduce isolation and fear among those having inclusive thoughts, build solidarity among LGBTQ persons and their allies, amplify the marginalized queer voices of faith, and provide increasing opportunities to train people to speak from their hearts about God’s welcoming table and the gift of the LGBTQ community. Your support enabled us to organize at 10 southern Annual Conferences, allowed Bishop Talbert and myself to begin a preaching tour in the South on the intersections of racism and homophobia, provided for new “Building Inclusive Church” trainings, and enabled RMN to direct 55 new hours of staff time toward movement-building in the South. Thanks be to God for you! We need every Reconciling individual to partner with southern Methodists, with RMN, and the

forces of love to advance a revival that is well under way. By May of 2016, we want to double the number of Reconciling individuals and communities in the South and we need your help to do it. Please consider a special 30th anniversary gift to support this important work. Southern revival is personal to me, personal to many of our staff and board, personal to the rising tide of southern LGBTQ Methodists, and personal to the whole church. And so we join hands. We join hands with each other and all people—at the intersections of a Christhaunted oppression and at the appearance of a cool drink of water—our common joy. Walking toward that place where our eyes have seen the glory— the southern horizon—over the tops of the Smokies, just West of the Hill Country, right over to the haze of the river…to work, to sing, to pray, to love—at a revival like none other.

COMMITTED TO BIBLICAL OBEDIENCE “With additional team members, visions of intersectional justice, and the dedication of Reconciling Methodists, there is much to be hopeful about as Together we move forward.”

R

econciling Ministries Network is thrilled to celebrate our 30th anniversary, looking eagerly to the justice-making and faithful witness that lies ahead. As the Network continues to grow, new opportunities for ministry and Biblical Obedience arise every day. Along with the work of Reconciling Methodists across the country, your continued support has hired a number of new team members to help meet the needs of the movement and expand our impact. We’ve seen incredible growth in the South over the last year. For this reason, our regional organizers, Helen Ryde in the Southeastern Jurisdiction and Laura Young in the South Central Jurisdiction, have increased to full-time service. Their gifts have already made such an impact in the movement and the fruit of their work will only be multiplied as we seek ways to partner with you in our Southern Initiative. 6 Katalyst

Rev. Izzy Alvaran has also become full-time, continuing to support the great intersectional witness of the Western Jurisdiction while also contributing additional time to working with Reconcilers in the Philippines. The Bishops in the Philippines recently made an urgent request for Methodists to openly discuss the church’s relationship to LGBTQ people. Rev. Alvaran will be able to join Reconciling Methodists in the Philippines in using this call for positive change. Our new deputy director, Bridget Cabrera will facilitate national strategies while collaborating with the vital efforts of our extension ministries. Empowering those leading the way for LGBTQ people of color, trans* Methodists, parents of LGBTQ children, and students, Bridget will connect the work of these ministries with the national movement while guiding the teams working on Convocation and General Conference strategies.

Our new director of development, Kathy Cheney-Egan, will continue building relationships with so many of you who want to see a fully inclusive UMC. Kathy will ensure we’re able to maximize our ministries through partnerships, having the resources to continue expanding our work to coincide with the growing size, needs, and ministries of the movement. Rev. Lois Parr has joined RMN as our Northern regional organizer, serving both the Northeastern and North Central Jurisdictions. Lois has found two life-giving locations in her journey: the church, and the LGBTQ community. Lois is committed to examining the ways that racism, sexism, ableism, classism, and heterosexism get tied together. She hopes that ministry can be a source of healing and justice, breaking down these boundaries in our congregations, our neighborhoods, and the world.

With the steady surge of laity, clergy, and Reconciling Teams involved in acts of Biblical Obedience, M will be able to help make sure the Network hears about all the faithful work happening in local regions. Bringing a trans* perspective and M’s experiences of discrimination in The UMC ordination process, M is helping our Network better listen to the stories of those who face discrimination because of their identity. staff development, administers the donor and outreach database, and supervises the welcoming process for new Reconciling United Methodists. Rev. Andy Oliver, director of communications, joins Bridget and Kathy on RMN’s senior staff who help executive director Matt Berryman achieve our mission to see a fully inclusive UMC. Dennis Akpona has also joined the Reconciling team as African Central Conferences Coordinator. As a LGBTQ activist and social worker from Nigeria, Dennis brings a wealth of wisdom and gifts to ministry with our Central Conferences. Building relationships

with LGBTQ people and allies in Africa, Dennis will work alongside others in helping to create safer spaces, churches, and communities starting with initiatives in Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Zimbabwe. We can’t think of a more exciting way to celebrate our 30th anniversary. As we look back with thanks for all the people, actions, and ministries that have gotten us all to this point, we’re excited about all of the creative, hopeful, and faithful new means of justice emerging across the Network. With additional team members, visions of intersectional justice, and the dedication of Reconciling Methodists, there is much to be hopeful about as we move forward.

August 6-9, 2015 Registration open: www.GATHER2015.org #gatherumc It’s time to come together again, this time with our coalition partners. We’ll Gather at the River in San Antonio, TX to celebrate the ways we’ve stirred the waters for inclusion, to be re-energized by the connection of our community, and to broaden our understanding of what justice looks like as we move forward together.

San Antonio FOLLOWS rmn’s commitment to work in the south Deep in the heart of Texas, our host in San Antonio, Travis Park UMC, is located downtown surrounded by some of the best Tex-Mex cuisine and is just two blocks from the gorgeous River Walk. Travis Park has a long and rich history of justice-making and provides the perfect atmosphere for our gathering. Thanks to a strong presence of local Reconciling teams alongside a new Southern Initiative at RMN, we’re seizing this opportunity to celebrate the particular context of the South’s gifts, challenges, and its unique context. 8 Katalyst
