Kathputli word is the combination of two Rajasthani language words ‘Kath’ meaning wood and ‘Putli’ meaning puppet. Kathputli means a puppet which is made entirely from wood covered with cotton cloth and tied with a metal wire which acts as a string. Being a string marionette, it is controlled by a single string that passes from the top of the puppet over the puppeteers. Puppeteer shows his skill with strings like swordsmanship, dancing, horse riding, juggling, and acrobatics. With its multi-colored dilapidated shanties, open drains & unhygienic condition, Kathputli colony appears to be insalubrious places dotting Delhi. In 1980s, the artistes in Kathputli gained international recognition through performances. Tradition of Kathputli is based on folk tales and stories. This bustling slum, known to have inspired the magician’s ghetto’ in Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, is home to about three thousand families comprising a community of puppeteers, singers, magicians, musicians, dancers and a variety of other performers.

LIVELIHOOD CONCERNS KATHPUTLI COLONY
The future economic stability of the livelihood due to the craft is less due to more number of family members. Lack of space within a household. Demands for more resources in future. Population pressure is leading to sub-division of land and agricultural inefficiency as well as an increased demand on a fixed land supply. Kathputli shows and scripts are extremely condensed versions of traditional ones, and they usually last only fifteen to thirty minutes.
Location
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA), in partnership with Raheja Developers, a private firm, wants to develop the colony in West Delhi. The DDA see the colony as a future home for apartment blocks, some of which will be sold to the residents at a reduced rate and others which will be offered at the market price to those who can afford it. The colony, is dotted with shackled mud huts, hovels, shanties without shades, open drains, narrow alleyways, pigs, stray dogs, heaps of garbage, flies, mosquito, without running water and basic sanitation. A very few families have pucca house or cement structure, indicating a sort of class division amongst them.
A quick glance around the area mostly reveals dirt, leaky plumbing and broken windows. An attempt to locate an artist amidst the rubble begins with a confused enquiry at a tea stall but finally lead to a family of puppeteers. The long walk to their home winds through a maze of open lavatories, kitchens without electricity or water supply and tiny alleys that double as play areas for the children. Deep in this dense community is a small tenement that houses the large family.
They earn 1000-1200 per member for each show, due to better experience and dexterity of the sons who assist.
