Neighborhood schools and beyond... Parents and students benefit from educational opportunities K AT I E H A R R I S

D

eadlines for school of choice applications approach earlier each year in our local districts. If you’ve considered enrolling your child in a school outside of your neighborhood boundaries, now is the time to apply for 2014-2015 and, in some districts, to start considering options for the following year. Luckily, in northern Colorado parents have options. Whether you’d like to find a STEM school with a focus in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; an International Baccalaureate school with a worldwide curriculum; or an alternative curriculum or online education, our local districts offer it all. Read on for a list of local schools and their specialties, along with deadlines to apply each year. Keep in mind that Colorado’s school of choice policy means that families not only have options within their district but within neighboring districts as well. School of Choice policies Poudre School District: Parents interested in sending their children to a specialized school or one that is outside their boundary area should follow the instructions available at www.psdschools.org/ academics/educational-choices/schoolchoice and complete the application that can be found there. If total applicants for any school exceed available space for that school then an automated lottery system will be utilized. Families who have been accepted will be notified and given two school days to accept or decline. Families who are not accepted will be placed on a waiting list. Deadline to apply for the 2014-15 school year: • Elementary: Feb. 14, 2014 • Secondary: Jan. 31, 2014

Acceptance emails sent to families: • Elementary: Beginning Feb. 18 • Secondary: Beginning Feb. 3 Thompson Valley School District: The district chooses which schools will be

available for choice/open enrollment based on available space, staff, and accommodations. The list of choice/open enrollment schools for 2014-15 can be found at www.thompsonschools.org/ domain/2005. The deadline to apply for school of choice is mid-December each year. Acceptance notification begins in mid-January. Weld County District 6: Families interested in choice/open enrollment should stop by the school office or by the main office at 1025 9th Ave., Greeley for more information. Applications will be accepted providing the requested school is not already at or above capacity, and providing that any special needs can be met for the applying student. For more information visit http://heiman.greeley schools.org/domain/832. The deadline to apply for school of choice each year is mid-December. Notification of acceptance begins early March. Weld RE-4 School District: Families should visit any school office or the district office located at 1020 Main St., Windsor to pick up a choice/open enrollment form. For more information visit www.weldre4.k12.co.us or call 970686-8000. The deadline to apply for the 20142015 school year for in-district students is March 1, 2014. Notification of acceptance will take place in early April. Deadline to apply for out-of-district students is October 1 each year.

School programs defined Many educational choices await students in northern Colorado, but deciphering them is sometimes a challenge. Check out these options.

Core Knowledge: Stresses cumulative learning year to year through a specific outline of curriculum for each grade level. The goal is to prevent repetition and holes in learning from one grade level to the next. Learn more at http:// coreknowledge.org/about-the-curriculum.

International Baccalaureate (IB): IB World Schools teach curriculum that is recognized worldwide, and promote compassion and curiosity with the goal of creating a better world. See www.ibo.org/index.cfm for more information.

Advanced Placement/College Credit: These are intense courses designed to prepare students for higher education, boost college applications, and in some cases transfer as college credits.

Alternative Program/School: Specialized assistance for students requiring nontraditional learning environments.

schools offer smaller class sizes and hands-on learning. Students complete portfolios of work rather than completing assignments for grades.

Charter School: These schools are publicly funded but operate separately from public schools. They are designed to provide unique educational opportunities and held accountable through monitoring of academic results. See www.nea.org/ home/16332.htm for more information.

Magnet/Lab School: These schools offer

Private School: Private schools are funded

Non-traditional/Experience Based: These

Global Village Academy announces new building for Southwest Ft. Collins Global Village Academy (GVA), a tuition-free international K-8 school, is finalizing plans for a new two-story facility to open in August on a 5.2acre site at the intersection of Horsetooth and Taft Hill road, according to school officials. GVA, which is currently leasing classroom space in far southeast Ft. Collins, provides a unique program that enables each student to achieve very high levels of new language skills through immersion in English and a choice of Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, or French. The school is part of Colorado’s fastest growing network of public charter schools and has seen enrollment expand from 220 students to 2200 students on four campuses in the past six years. The accredited educational program also promotes cultural competencies and 21st century skills through its diverse staff of professional instructors from the U.S. and through-

out the world. Global Village Academy also provides bus transportation services enabling students throughout the region to participate in the language immersion experience. Global Village Principal Russ Spicer said, “People are very surprised to learn that this is a tuition-free public school with a free full day kindergarten program. We anticipate a January lottery and are currently accepting applications for grades K-5 for the 2014 school year and for the feebased international preschool, which will serve 3 and 4-year olds with instruction in English and a choice of Spanish or Chinese.” Parents wishing to apply, to visit the current school, or to learn more about the program can visit www.globalvillageacademy.org or email Assistant Principal Tammy Warren at twarren@ globalvillageacademy.org. The school

is planning its lottery for new students on February 6, 2014. “This is an exciting addition to our regional educational options,” said Ray Martinez, former Fort Collins Mayor and president of the local GVA Board. “We expect to serve up to 500 students in the 24,000 square foot first phase of this facility and we’re pleased that the diversity of our staff and students provides a unique educational opportunity.” Planners, architects, and developers for the school are currently working through city and state approval procedures and are on schedule for the school to open in August. ************************************ Global Village International Learning through language and culture 555 W. 112th • Northglenn • CO 80234 www.globalvillageacademy.org 970-402-6898
