perspective What’s going to happen exciting today? Appreciation makes the difference

I

was thinking of different ways of being in the world when I woke up today. I know that might sound a little odd. It was tempered with plenty of what I had to do, kind of that mix of what am I going to try to accomplish today and with what attitude am I going to approach it. Maybe because I was hungry and getting ready to stir up some eggs, my mind flitted to an A.A. Milne quote that I’d seen on a menu. “When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what’s the first thing you say

to yourself ?” “What’s for breakfast,” said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?” “I say, I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today?” said Piglet. Pooh nodded thoughtfully. “It’s the same thing,” he said. So I thought, why don’t I wake up every day as Piglet. I naturally tend toward waking up and wondering what the day might hold, in a good way, even if I’m a little worried about parts of it. But sometimes my inner Eeyore raises his head and I look at the day as just another day to try to get through. I was reminded by Katie Harris’ Time Out column that one sure way to get from Eeyore to Piglet is by appreciating. She talks about her inner Grinch. It’s the same thing. You have to read her story. I was thoroughly inspired, maybe even shed a tear as I followed her family’s journey of appreciation. In fact, I appreciate my wife for standing by my side through thick and thin for more than 35 years I appreciate my parents for their care and support from my first breath to the present and beyond I appreciate my daughter for all our adventures, insightful chats, and time spent together I appreciate my son for the time we spend banging on guitars, playing cribbage, and being up for whatever I appreciate the wonderful team here at Rocky Mountain Publishing for their enthusiasm and heart I appreciate my extended family and friends old and new for the richness they add to my life I appreciate waking up in the morning and seeing the glow before sunrise I appreciate the challenges in my life for giving me the opportunity rise, or stumble, but at least to be in the game I appreciate hopping on my bike and feeling the sun and wind and cold and all of it out there in the elements, every time I appreciate the opportunity to draw my next breath and to just notice the moment I could go on and on, as did Katie’s family when she put out the “thankful jar.” And I’m sure you could too. So as we dive into the new year, let’s take a collective moment to pause, breathe and wonder what’s going to happen exciting today? Scott

Single and ready to date Finding a healthy relationship

LY N N U N I C H O L S

S

o, you want to start dating, but you don’t know how your kids will handle it. Besides, your days are filled up with work, kid care and school and sporting events—when would dating happen, anyway? With a little forethought on how to broach it with your kids, you’ll be just fine. KNOWING WHEN YOU ARE READY Single parents are the champions of feeling guilty and putting their kids first. That’s admirable, but you are your best parent when you take care of yourself. It’s okay to date, just be smart about it. First, make sure you are dating for the right reasons—wanting a healthy relationship. It’s best to let some time go by after a divorce to start dating since kids tend to resist someone new before they’ve had a chance to process their feelings about someone old. Head out on the town with some friends. Or, let your friends know you are ready to date and willing to be set up. Consider online dating, just don’t post a picture of you and your kids. With that said, keep kid talk to a minimum on the first few dates so you two can get to know each other as individuals, first. WHEN TO INTRODUCE TO KIDS If the commitment isn’t there it’s best to wait. Keep in mind that your kids might become quickly attached and you don’t want to risk them having to go through another separation from someone they care about if it doesn’t last. If you decide it is serious or has good potential for becoming serious, plan before making introductions. Let your kids know they are your priority and you will not abandon them now that you are dating. Let them know you will answer any questions they 8

| RMPARENT

have, and ask open-ended questions to encourage them to share their feelings. Make sure the conversation is void of expectations. In other words, don’t say things like, “I know you are going to really like Ethan,” or “It’s important to me that you accept him. With that said, don’t give them the power to decide if Ethan is right for you and your family. Instead, tell them why you like him. Let your kids warm up to him at their own pace. Finally, when you do make the introductions, do so in a relaxed, fun and neutral environment. Consider going out for a bite to eat, playing a game together or doing something fun like sledding or playing in the park. IT’S GETTING SERIOUS, NOW WHAT? It’s time for an honest conversation with you and your new partner. Does

he realize that he’s not only committing to you, but also committing to your kids? Does he seem genuinely interested in your kids? Can you envision him as a parenting partner? While the relationship progresses keep your kids up to date. Let them know he is important to you, and how you see his role in your family. Listen to their concerns. Also, ease into spending a lot of time together. If you jump in head first and spend all your free time with your new love interest, your kids might get spooked. When it’s serious, create more and more opportunities to hang out as a family unit together. Now that you’ve got the basics down, put some feelers out. If you want to date and you are ready, it’s time. Your kids will be just fine.

Downhill dreaming

Three great vacation destinations K ATIE HARRIS

Y

ou can’t call yourself a true Rocky Mountaineer until you’ve been introduced to the slopes. Whether on skis or a board, a high-speed cruise down a mountain is a right of passage for any local, adult and child alike, and at the right mountain resort, it can also be a memorable family vacation. Three of our favorite family-friendly ski resorts offer something for everyone, including a plethora of winter activities that allow you to keep your feet on the ground...or at least out of ski boots. ASPEN SNOWMASS, CO (4.5 HOURS FROM FORT COLLINS) Offering everything from private lessons to kids camps, Aspen Snowmass has programs to suit all ages, abilities and interests. In addition to the typical kids group lessons, the resort offers family private lessons so that parents can spend the day on the slopes with their kids, learning the ropes together from their own personal ski pro. The resort also offers the Kids Mountain Explorers program—a fiveday camp for intermediate skiers and snowboarders ages 8 to 12, running early January through late March. Kids will ski or snowboard on all four area mountains, learning new skills in steeps and bumps, park and pipe, and racing, in groups of up to six students per instructor. A beginner’s terrain park, multi-lane tubing run, and lessons in the increasingly popular art of snowbike riding add a twist to the typical day on the slopes at Aspen Snowmass. Visit www.aspensnowmass. com to learn more. JACKSON HOLE, WY (7 HOURS FROM FORT COLLINS) The longest drive on our list is worth it when you take advantage of Jackson Hole’s “kids ski free” program with any JHRL condominium or home rental and one paying adult per child. The 10

| RMPARENT

program applies to any child under 15 through April 9. In addition, Jackson Hole offers a lower mountain lift ticket for families wanting an easy day together on the slopes, at a discounted rate of $20/adult and $10/child. Jackson Hole is home to the 20,000 sq. ft. Kids Ranch, offering daycare for the youngest visitors, ski camps for teens, and everything in between. Mountain playground names like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, Transformer Bumps, and Atom Smasher encourage kids to spend the entire day exploring all the hidden gems Kids Ranch has to offer. Enjoy winter activities such as ice skating, sleigh rides and tubing, or visit the Jackson Hole Toy Store just minutes from the slopes to complete your Wyoming adventure. For more information visit www.jacksonhole.com. PARK CITY, UT (6.5 HOURS FROM FORT COLLINS) If the 7,300 acres of ski terrain and 348

trails that make Park City the largest ski and snowboard resort in the country aren’t enough to have you packing the car for Utah, the many other unique winter activities in Park City just might. An Alpine Coaster and Flying Eagle Zipline as well as sleigh rides and snowmobile tours, all located at the mountain base, provide entertainment for even the nonskiers in the family. Aspiring skiers and boarders can take part in private or group lessons for all ages. For more information visit www.parkcitymountain.com. While visiting Park City, travel just a few minutes from the resort to the home of the 2002 Olympic Winter games, where guests can take guided tours of the nearly 400-acre Utah Olympic Park. A museum is also on site for self-guided tours. The Olympic park offers three ropes courses for varying ability levels as well as a drop tower. NoCo prioritizes literacy, recreation Building libraries, play area, new names, rangering KIM SHARPE

FOUR BOOKS A WEEK Fort Morgan becomes first U.S. city where every kindergartener has a personal library of 100 books. Located about 50 miles east of Greeley, Fort Morgan, Colorado, is giving the gift of reading to all 250 of its 4-year-olds who are set to enter kindergarten in the fall. OneMorgan County, a local nonprofit, is working with city officials, two of the town’s largest employers— Cargill and Leprino Foods—and Colorado Health Foundation to ensure that every Fort Morgan 4-year-old receives four books each week, from January into July 2019. According to Fort Collins-based Unite for Literacy, LLC, supplier of the books, as well as associated reading programs for the children and their parents, Fort Morgan will become the 14

| RMPARENT

first U.S. community in which the entire population of 4-year-olds have personal libraries with 100+ books and community-based reading activities. “Children who enter school with early literacy skills are more likely than their peers to experience later academic success, attain higher levels of education and secure better employment,” says Susana Guardado, OneMorgan County director. “The result is a stronger community for everyone, so the goal of the Fort Morgan Growing Readers program is to make sure every Fort Morgan child enters kindergarten motivated and ready to learn. We are also excited to share with our community the Unite for Literacy free online library that has more than 400 books that are narrated in up to 40 languages to support families that are English language learners.”

For more information, visit www.onemorgancounty.org. EAST MEMORIAL NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECT IN GREELEY RECEIVES GRANT Colorado Health Foundation recently awarded the City of Greeley a $1.1 million grant for their East Memorial Neighborhood improvement plan. This three-year grant will help develop a 17-acre grassy lot into a community and child-led adventure play area in an effort to bring improved recreational opportunities to families in the East Memorial Neighborhood. The East Memorial Neighborhood, on Greeley’s east side, is a densely populated area with approximately 7,200 residents, of which 37 percent are under the age of 18 years. As such, the area covers a high percentage of youth with limited access to city-wide

recreational activities and parks. The winning three-year project calls for a resident outreach and engagement process, as well as the development of additional programming involving not only the undeveloped East Memorial Natural Area, but also adjacent public areas, including Balsam Park, East Memorial Park and Delta Park. The City of Greeley believes that through social, physical and programmatic improvements, the level of physical activity and access to nature will be elevated for the residents of East Memorial.

The City Center South building contains Greeley’s IT department, the water and sewer department administration offices, and Greeley Municipal Courts. City Center North houses the building inspection, building permits, code compliance, community development, community safety and fire prevention, construction services, economic health and housing, natural resources, and planning and zoning departments. For more information, contact Greeley Public Works Deputy Director Will Jones 970-350-9751 or will.jones@greeleygov.com.

NEW NAMES FOR CITY OF GREELEY BUILDINGS Greeley’s new city building, located at 1001 11th Ave., is now called City Center South, and the City Hall Annex and Focus Building, located at 1100 10th St., is now City Center North. Although a small change, these new names represent a part of the city’s larger project to create a cohesive downtown government campus where residents can find and access government services and offices.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER RANGER ASSISTANT Did you think you would grow up to be a park ranger? It’s not too late! You can become a Volunteer Ranger Assistant for the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department. Volunteers are especially needed on weekends. Applications are due by January 30. Twenty (20) hours of training will take place in February. As a Volunteer Ranger Assistant,

you will be an ambassador for natural areas and open spaces, answering visitor questions out on the city’s trails while you walk, ride a bike or ride a horse. During the training, you’ll learn about local and regional trails, how to approach visitors, ecology, safety and stewardship. Benefits include continuing education classes, such as first aid and CPR, special behind-the-scenes tours, recognition events and more. healthy living

Be active, be safe

With a few precautions you can play outdoors all year round LEA HANSON

F

rigid temperatures shouldn’t discourage you from getting some fresh air while exercising outdoors. Just learn to play it safe. Cold, ice, and darkness bring to our attention safety concerns. The following tips can help you stay safe while exercising outdoors in the winter months. CHECK WEATHER CONDITIONS This includes wind chill. Temperature, wind, and moisture, along with the length of time you’ll be outside are key factors in planning a cold-weather workout. Getting wet (this includes weather as well as sweat) makes you more vulnerable to the cold. And if you get soaked, you may not be able to keep your core body temperature at a safe level. KNOW THE SIGNS OF FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA Frostbite is most common on exposed skin, such as your cheeks, nose, and ears. It can also occur on hands and feet. Early warning signs include numbness, loss of feeling, or a stinging sensation. Immediately get out of the cold if you suspect frostbite. Slowly warm the affected area—but don’t rub it since that can damage your skin. Hypothermia is an abnormally low body temperature. When exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Exercising in cold, rainy weather increases the risk of hypothermia. Hypothermia signs and symptoms include intense shivering, slurred speech, loss of coordination and fatigue. DRESS IN LAYERS Dressing in layers that you can remove as soon as you start to sweat and later put back on is key. First, wear a thin layer of synthetic material, such as polypropylene, which draws sweat away from your body. Avoid cotton, which

16

| RMPARENT

stays wet next to your skin. Fleece or wool is a solid second layer. Top this with a waterproof, breathable outer layer. PROTECT YOUR HEAD, HANDS, FEET AND EARS When it’s cold, blood flow is concentrated in your body’s core, leaving your head, hands and feet vulnerable. Wear a thin pair of gloves (such as polypropylene) under a pair of heavier gloves or mittens lined with wool or fleece. Consider buying exercise shoes a half size or one size larger than usual to allow for thick thermal socks or an extra pair of regular socks. Wear a hat to protect your head or headband to protect your ears. If it’s very cold, consider wearing a scarf or ski mask to cover your face. REMEMBER SAFETY GEAR If it’s dark when you exercise outside, wear reflective clothing. If you ride a bike, both

headlights and taillights are ideal. Wear a helmet while skiing, snowboarding, etc. Don’t forget sunscreen. It’s as easy to get sunburned in winter as in summer—even more so when exercising in the snow or at high altitudes. STAY HYDRATED Hydration is as important during cold weather as it is in the heat. Drink water or sports drinks before, during, and after your workout, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration is harder to notice during cold weather, but happens from sweating, breathing, the drying power of the winter wind, and increased urine production. These tips can help you safely—and enjoyably—exercise when temperatures drop. And, just listen to your body. You’ll be more likely to prevent injury and will probably have more fun.

Make cold weather days great days

Treat your kids to free play, imagination, books and movement Kim Sharpe

W

hen the weather outside is frightful, do you fret about what your kids will

do all day? Well, fret not because there are so many ways to keep them occupied. And remember, a parent’s role isn’t to be an activity director or entertainer. While you can provide suggestions and items for activities, make sure to balance that with letting kids figure out their own ways to have fun.

JUST PLAY Unstructured playtime in which a parent’s role is minimal is vital because it expands children’s creativity. Free play gives children the opportunity to explore, investigate, question, contemplate, problem solve and socialize—all by themselves. “Children have an amazing innate ability to be creative when they

18

| RMPARENT

play freely on their own, and unfortunately, the act of over-parenting dampens or even wipes out that innate ability,” says Mike Lanza, author of Playborhood: Turn Your Neighborhood into a Place for Play. He feels it’s important for parents to figure out how to facilitate children’s creativity without managing it. Free play also shouldn’t incorporate elaborate play spaces or the latest and greatest toys. Parents will do their kids a favor by keeping play simple. IMAGINATION STATION Part of free play is allowing kids to use their imaginations. Melina Bernhardt says, “I collect all kinds of things, like toilet paper rolls, boxes, empty shampoo and dish soap bottles, and other containers so my daughter can play pharmacy or grocery shopping when she’s cooped up indoors. She uses her imagination to have fun.” Art supplies, like crayons, colored pencils, water colors, scissors, modeling clay, magazines and a variety of paper (repurposed from household or office documents) also make for hours of imagined fun. Stacy Doyle’s 11-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son love to design and make handmade greeting cards for family and friends from a variety of art supplies. They also enjoy making collages by cutting up magazines and pasting together interesting images. She says, “It’s a great way to repurpose junk mail and keep them interacting with each other and the rest of family rather than getting sucked into the Internet.” Beyond arts and crafts, kids’ imaginations run wild when large cardboard boxes or items such as blankets are made available to build forts, mazes and other hang outs. And if you have children who are curious about how things work, supply them with old gadgets to take apart. Doyle says, “We buy things at thrift stores for our son to disassemble, like $2 toasters. He loves it!”

LITERAL FUN Books can provide children with hours of entertainment. Whether they read a book or magazine that interests them or write their own, nothing beats the adventures one can have when absorbed in a good read. “Turn your kids loose with ageappropriate books either at a library, at a bookstore or maybe right in your own home, and watch magic happen,” says Mark Condon, vice president of Unite for Literacy. “In no time they’ll have an armful of personally interesting and engaging book choices to dive into. A mix of nonfiction and fiction offers the potential of both thrilling real-world discoveries and imaginary adventures. Thus supplied, children can be entertained for hours and generate great dinner-table conversation, too.” MOVE ON Just because kids are inside doesn’t mean they have to sit around all day. As a matter of fact, kids and their parents both benefit from regular bouts of movement, like dancing. All you need to do is clear some space and crank up the tunes. If you break out your best moves and dance like no one is watching, your kids will love it and join right in. Yoga is another activity that can get bodies moving indoors. To get started, Shannon Westcott, a children’s yoga teacher at Om Ananda Yoga Studio in Fort Collins, says, “Declare it’s family

yoga time! Set up mats, limit distractions and just start showing your family some easy yoga poses.” Some popular online yoga videos the whole family can try include Kidding Around Yoga (www. kiddingaroundyoga.com), Karma Kid’s Yoga (www.karmakidsyoga. com), Musical Adventures (www. musicalyogaadventures.com) and GoNoodles.com. GET OUT Fresh air does every body some good. Even in the winter months, children and adults should get a dose of outdoor time every day. “In Colorado, we have cold days along with beautiful sunshine. It’s important for my kids to experience nature in all seasons and get their needed daily physical activity,” says Jessica Wagner-Hinterberg. “They’re learning to adapt outdoor play for the seasons, and I’ve learned to bring a towel to the playground to clean off the slide. As a parent I’ve also learned the quality of winter gear matters. If kids are comfortable, warm and can move without restriction, they are more likely to keep playing outside, which makes for happier days for all.”

A fortress against cold and flu Lynn U Nichols

W

hen people talk about preventing colds and flu in kids, they often focus on hand washing and teaching kids to cover their mouths when they cough. While this is excellent advice, it’s not enough. To protect your kids from getting sick this winter, focus on helping them build a fortress from the inside out. A healthy body shuts the gates to infection. Create wellness with a healthy lifestyle, good gut health and adequate vitamin D levels, and if your child gets sick leave the cough syrup and Tamiflu on the shelf and treat with natural approaches instead. “Of course, prevention is the key. Eating healthy, staying well hydrated, limiting sugar intake, moving daily, limiting stress and avoiding secondhand smoke are the basics for keeping children healthy,” says Shannon Evans, DO, Functional Medicine Physician with New Beginnings Functional Medicine Clinic in Fort Collins (www.NewBeginningsFMC.com). 20

FOOD AS MEDICINE Here’s something you probably haven’t thought about: If your body doesn’t recognize a substance it launches an inflammatory reaction against it. In practical terms, this means that when you read a food label and you don’t recognize ingredients, likely your body won’t either. That’s why it’s best to avoid processed foods and focus on eating whole foods that are as close to their natural form as possible. “You don’t need an ingredient list for an apple. If your body doesn’t recognize ingredients, like genetically modified foods (GMOs), additives and preservatives, it can create an immune response leading to inflammation. Inflammation can affect our overall health negatively,” Evans says. When it comes to food, she recommends offering your kids a rainbow of colors from a produce perspective so they can get all the antioxidants and nutrients they need. She also advocates buying organic whenever possible.

“If cost is an issue, focus on buying organic for those fruits and vegetables on the dirty dozen list for high pesticides and herbicides (www.ewg.org/ foodnews). Also, try to buy clean animal products produced without hormones or antibiotics,” she suggests. With vegetables, get creative so your kids will eat them. Mash cauliflower like potatoes, make smoothies and create fun dips for cut up veggies that you keep in the fridge for easy grabbing. Evans also recommends choosing to breastfeed, if possible, to help build your baby’s immune system. HAPPY GUT, HAPPY LIFE “The gut is our gateway to good health. If our gut is not healthy, the rest of us is not going to be healthy because most of our immunity is located in our gut,” Evans says. The best way to ensure your kids’ immune systems are up to the job of fighting off colds and flu is to keep

Create wellness from the inside out their guts healthy with a healthy diet. If your child has frequent stomach aches, bloating or gas, it may be time to check for food sensitivities or allergies—a common reason parents seek out Dr. Evans because she often gets to the root of the problem. Correcting food sensitivities helps ensure the gut stays healthy and is able to absorb nutrients needed for growing kids. Our gut immunity relies on healthy bacteria to maintain balance. When that balance is thrown off, kids get sick more often. Another way to throw off gut bacteria besides poor diet is taking antibiotics. “For bacterial infections like strep throat, kids may need antibiotics. If your kids ever need an antibiotic, also start them on a probiotic that’s designed for their age group and double what is recommended. Keep them on it for a month to restore the good gut bacteria that died off while on the antibiotic,” Evans says.

KEEP IT NATURAL WHEN CLEANING AND WASHING UP Here’s another zinger: If you won’t eat something, don’t put it on your skin. “Everything you put on your skin can get absorbed into your body. Limit exposure to toxins by using natural cleaning products and hygiene products,” Evans says. Chemicals and other unnatural ingredients stress your children’s bodies. There’s a wide array of natural products you can buy for your kids from shampoo to toothpaste. When you recognize the ingredients, so will their bodies. VITAMIN D FOR IMMUNITY Most experts agree, vitamin D is crucial for maintaining strong immunity. The good news is you can absorb vitamin D from sunlight. Yet often, in winter months, sunlight is not enough. “It’s important to make sure your children have healthy vitamin D levels because it plays a huge part in the immune system. I recommend 10-15 minutes of direct sunlight every day with most areas exposed—something hard to get in the winter—so a supplement can be beneficial,” Evans says. Suggested amounts of supplemented vitamin D for kids vary greatly depending on the source. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 400 IU a day and the RDA suggests 600 IU per day for people ages 1 to 70. Yet a study published on WebMD found that giving kids 2000 IU a day is not only acceptable but also recommended. “I recommend that kids 10 or younger take a supplement of 400 IU of vitamin D a day and kids older than 10 take 2000 IU daily,” Evans says. WHEN A COLD OR FLU BREAKS THROUGH Dr. Evans recommends treating a cold or flu with natural remedies, including black elderberry extract, honey, chiropractic or osteopathic manipulations and of course, plenty of fluids and rest. “Black elderberry extract has been shown to do a better job at lessening flu symptoms and shortening the duration of the illness than Tamiflu,” she says.

Give your child (six months or older) alcohol-free elderberry extract at the first signs of a cold or flu. Keep it up until symptoms resolve for up to seven days. If they develop a cough and are over a year old, give them a teaspoon or teaspoon and a half of straight up honey. Avoid over-the-counter cough medicine that may contain alcohol and cause more harm than good. “Over-the-counter cough and cold medicines actually decrease children’s respiratory drive, which can slow or stop the child’s breathing,” Evans says. Studies have found chiropractic or osteopathic manipulations to be helpful when given at the start of a cold. Manipulations can loosen congestion of the lymphatic fluids and blood, helping relieve symptoms. If your child gets a fever, don’t be too quick to dole out ibuprofen or acetaminophen to bring it down. Instead, watch it closely. “Fever is your body’s way of fighting off infection. If a fever is at 100 or 101 degrees (for kids not babies), leave it alone. When it breaks on its own your child may get over the cold or flu sooner,” Evans says. She recommends making a child comfortable with a cold, moist cloth on the forehead or back of the neck. Also, keep them cool with light clothing and avoid heavy blankets or cranking up the house heat. If you have a baby younger than three months with a fever of 100.4 degrees or more, see your physician, and also for kids with a fever of 104 degrees or higher. If your child is super lethargic or fussy, has a stiff neck or a very sore ear or throat, see your doctor. It’s true that young children are more susceptible to sickness because their immune systems are less developed, and they need to experience a germ to create resistance to it. Kids younger than 6 will catch six to eight colds each year on average. Yet building up their body’s natural defenses may mean they won’t catch every single cold they are exposed to—giving you at least a few breaks this winter. RMPARENT

hanks to Colorado’s Public Schools of Choice law, parents can enroll their children in schools of their choice, even when they’re outside their zoned districts, provided the school is not currently at capacity and is able to accept new students. As the number of schools offering special focus areas, alternative curriculums and online options has been on the rise in recent years, it’s become increasingly important for families to research all available options when choosing the right fit. Below, find a directory of schools by focus area for the four northern Colorado districts as well as contact information for scheduling tours and learning more.

president and named a new member. The Board named Natalie Mash as the person who will fill the position vacated by Roger DeWitt, who announced in October that he would retire from the Board before completing his second term. Ms. Mash, a registered nurse and Refugee Program Coordinator at Sunrise Community Health, will serve in the position until November 2019, when the seat will be up for election for a two-year term, fulfilling the term vacated by DeWitt. “I feel very honored to be selected,” Mash said. “It was a wonderful group of candidates. I am excited to continue the good work being done in this district.” Ms. Mash has two children attending the Fred Tjardes School of Innovation. She and her husband of 17 years live in Greeley.

Mr. DeWitt was originally appointed to the Board in 2013, to fill a position vacated by the resignation of Judy Kron from her director post. Later that year, he was elected to a four-year position, and he was re-elected in November 2017. He has served as President of the Board since 2013. After accepting Mr. DeWitt’s resignation, the Board unanimously selected Michael Mathews as the new Board president. Mr. Mathews was elected to the Board in 2016. He is the pastor of St. Patrick’s Presbyterian Church and he and his wife have five children in District 6 schools. Prior to Ms. Mash’s appointment, a public reception was held in honor of Mr. DeWitt. Board members also took time during the Board meeting to honor their colleague.

poudre school district news PSD students give back during holiday season

During the holiday season, PSD students and staff across the District worked tirelessly to give back to the community. These efforts included food drives, donation drives, and service projects. Here is a sampling of some of the wonderful holiday happenings from around PSD: • The PSD community collected nearly 1,500 turkeys for families in need before Thanksgiving. • The Poudre High School community collected some 70,000 pounds of food and raised more than $10,000 for fresh-food donations. This means that 350 Poudre High School families in need received two weeks’ worth of food. The food 26

drive also goes to support families in Poudre High School feeder schools. • Third graders from Johnson Elementary School went on a field trip to Morning Star Assisted Living and Memory Care. They read residents stories, delivered handmade cards, and performed a song. • Schools and departments across the District set up “Giving Trees,” where students and staff could donate presents to families in need. PSD BOARD VOTES TO CHANGE SCHOOL START TIMES After a year of extensive research and community engagement, Poudre School

District’s Board of Education voted 7-0 during a recent meeting to change PSD’s school start times, beginning in the 2019-20 school year. After analyzing district staff ’s final report on the school start times exploration, and considering myriad community input and potential implications, the Board decided to implement Modified Scenario B, created in direct response to feedback from the community. A significant motivating factor for the Board came down to making changes to support students’ improved mental health and wellbeing, which are among the Board’s areas of focus and interest. “This is a proactive step for mental

health, and I certainly applaud it in that vein,” says Board Director Rob Petterson, calling the change the “right thing to do” to give students their best opportunities to learn. Starting next year, high schools will start between 8:55 and 9am; middle schools will start at 8:05am; and elementary schools will start between 7:45am and 8:50am, which represents a significant change for many schools at the elementary level. To see a complete list of projected start and end times by school, please visit PSD’s website. At the meeting, Board Directors spent considerable time debating the decision, weighing factors from the timing of implementation of such a change to nationwide research into the impact of adolescent sleep cycles. These changes will bring PSD’s bell schedules more closely in line with guidelines from the American Medical Association (AMA), which recommends that teenagers start school no earlier than 8:30am. Research has shown that teenagers learn better and are safer when they start school later in the day. Along the Front Range in Colorado, Cherry Creek School District, Littleton Public Schools, Brighton’s School District 27J, and Thompson School District have moved start times.

In her position, Ms. Knauer will direct the completion of district projects that are made possible by the November passage of the district’s $149 million bond election measure. Ms. Knauer is currently serving as the Operations Manager for Heath Steel in Fort Collins. Throughout her career, she has gained a wealth of experience managing a variety of facility projects in public education, including service as the project manager, construction manager and then director of planning, design and construction for Poudre School District. She has also worked for a number of other Colorado school districts, including the role of project manager for St. Vrain Valley School District. Ms. Knauer also completed similar work for Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada. “I am excited to join the Operations and Facilities team here at Thompson School District,” she says.

“I look forward to putting the bond dreams into motion and to help make all of these exciting projects a reality.” Ms. Knauer earned a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from Colorado State University and holds several certifications from related professional associations. BRUNCH TO HONOR VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS Thompson School District thanked its volunteer coordinators for their work during the annual Holiday Brunch in December at The Flipside. Volunteer coordinators at each school in the district help coordinate classroom assistance, events and fundraisers, which enables the schools to provide a better education and more opportunities for students. The volunteer time they give is a huge contribution to the district. Volunteers make a difference in TSD. During the 2017-2018 school year, a total of 3,654 active volunteers logged 76,820 volunteer hours.

time out The Thanksgiving Grinch

Kids’ thankful notes grow mom’s heart three sizes K ATIE HARRIS

B

ack in early November, I found myself in a slump. With my husband pulling extra long work days and the kids busier than ever with after-school and weekend activities, I begrudgingly hoisted my pregnant self off the couch and began taking down the Halloween decorations by myself, replacing them with the one trinket resembling a Thanksgiving decoration I could find: a dusty jar we’d used years ago to hold notes proclaiming what we were thankful for. Thinking it couldn’t hurt the current household vibe, I set the jar on the kitchen table along with a stack of scrap paper and a pen, and announced to the rest of the family that the “thankful jar” had returned, and if anyone wanted to contribute they were welcome to do so. By the end of that evening the jar was nearly half full. My 9-year-old, hater of all things remotely school-like, hadn’t hesitated to put down his video game controller and spell out each of our names on separate pieces of paper before carefully folding them and placing them in the jar. Meanwhile, my 11-year-old aspiring author wrote one paragraph after another. As it turned out, there wasn’t much she wasn’t thankful for. Biting back my grinch-like urge to reproach her for filling the jar too quickly, weeks before Thanksgiving, I shrugged and let her do her thing. As the holiday approached I waited for the day when the thrill would wear off and the kids would lose interest in the activity, but that day never came. Instead, the jar continued to fill to overflowing, with even my husband taking the time to fill out a piece of paper every night after dinner. A week before Thanksgiving I was walking the neighborhood, about the only exercise I could still comfortably get in those days, when suddenly, in-

spired by my family’s ability to remain positive despite my recent negativity, my bad mood broke and I was overwhelmed by all the things I was grateful for in my life. By the time I made it home I was reciting dozens of ideas in my head over and over, not wanting to lose a single one before I got it down on paper. As we were preparing to pull out of the driveway on Thanksgiving morning my daughter jumped out and ran back into the house. She returned with the jar, now stuffed to the brim. As we drove to our Thanksgiving destination the kids took turns reading the notes aloud, and I found myself energized, even smiling a real, authentic smile, as they went through each one. My son was thankful for macaroni and cheese, but also for snuggling up with me on the couch. My daughter, for her horse, and also for my help with her schoolwork. Nearly every one of my husband’s contributions said the same thing: he was thankful for days when he made it home from work early enough to spend time with us. As I listened to

my kids read my own notes, I realized they were all true, and that there were so many more I could’ve written as well. Hearing those thoughts read aloud kept my cheerful mood going for days to come. As we moved into December I found myself wanting to hold onto that grateful feeling a little longer, and talked with the kids about ways we could give back for the holidays. They excitedly agreed to expand on our usual volunteer efforts by adding extra shifts over the holidays whenever we could squeeze them in. Much like the Grinch himself, I found my heart growing a size or two bigger with each opportunity to give back with my family. As we barrel into January and a brand new year, I’m determined to keep the positivity train going. Maybe a recommitment to our typically short-lived New Year’s resolution tradition is in order—I have a feeling my daughter could come up with a couple hundred to get us started. Whatever 2019 has in store for me, 2018 taught me to count my blessings, and that even in our grinchiest moments we can still find something to be thankful for.
