as we grow It’s all in the balance Structure vs. spontaneity
LY NN U. NICHOLS
S
tructure is a balancing act. Like a teeter totter, the sweet spot is smack in the middle. Too much structure and your family can feel stressed and constrained. Too little structure and your family can feel chaotic and lost. The right balance means calm, clockwork, with times of spontaneity and fun. With so much at-home time due to the pandemic, you might be feeling out of balance with structure. Here are some ideas to find the middle again. THE UPSIDE OF STRUCTURE When kids know what to expect—for example a daily routine that’s predictable— they feel calmer, more in control, and more secure. Structure also lets kids know the world works by certain social rules. It might seem counterintuitive, but enforcing structure by saying no and setting rules can make kids feel loved—even if they object. If you don’t set any rules you run the risk of kids assuming you simply don’t care. KEEPING STRUCTURE WITH RULES With structure, comes rules. When your parents were kids, it was called discipline. Now, it is called setting limits, creating boundaries, or promoting positive behaviors. Whatever you choose to call it, it’s structure—and it’s important for helping your kids learn how to get along at home and out in the world. That’s why experts suggest parents create a handful of house and behavioral rules, and then develop strategies to maintain them. Do two things—first, decide on a set of specific responses that will increase the behavior you want in your kids—like praise, rewards or attention—and secondly, decide on strategies to give consequences for undesirable behavior—like losing privileges, or natural consequences like foregoing a future play date with a friend if your child was physical or rude. Most importantly, stick to your plan. The Centers for Disease Control names 8

three key ingredients for building structure at home: consistency, predictability, and follow through. Your kids might reject new rules, but if you stay consistent, they will accept them in time. THE UPSIDE OF BREAKING FREE OF STRUCTURE Overdoing structure can cause kids to rely too heavily on the known, leaving them unsure of what to do in new situations. Also, unstructured time where kids can play freely encourages them to flex their creativity muscles and practice their communication skills without a parent always intervening. Kids who are allowed to work out their own conflicts, with some gentle reflecting afterwards from you when needed, learn the building blocks of maintaining good relationships—a major key to lifelong happiness. RELIEVING STRESS WITH SPONTANEOUS FUN To build resiliency and allow for spontaneity and joy in your family life, it’s important to set daily routines aside now and then. When you do, just make sure you announce the change to your kids. For example, you could say: “Instead
of doing homework right after school today, we are going to go to the park to play tag.” This reinforces that you have a regular routine, while showing the benefits of sometimes not following it. The key is not breaking structure too regularly, and sticking to the routine on most days. By being flexible at times with structure, you are teaching your kids to handle change and give themselves permission to break out and have fun. After all, taking breaks from the stress of life is an important lesson in self care. Breaks from structure can also be used as rewards for staying in structure. For example, saying to your kids, ‘If you finish your homework on time, we can take a bike ride around the neighborhood before dinner’ gives them an incentive to stick to the plan. It also teaches them that hard work is rewarded. Having your kids at home more often these days is a good time to step back and evaluate your daily routine and rules. If something isn’t working, change it. Of course, let your kids know why and lay out the new plan to fix it. There’s no one-size-fits-all with family structure. Adjust rules and routines as your kids grow to keep that perfect balance.

family activities
Hit the slopes
Check ski areas for COVID-19 adjustments LEA HANSON
A
s an activity in the Covid-19 era, skiing has a lot going for it—it’s outdoors, people naturally distance by spreading out all over a mountain, and they’re used to covering their faces. What’s tricky is everything around skiing: renting gear, waiting in lift lines, sharing gondolas and chairs, crowding at mid-mountain restaurants, and finding a place to stay if you want or need to stay overnight. If your family skis or snowboards, you know this season is going to much more difficult to navigate than previous years. With the unknown of hotel and short-term rental vacancy and required reservations for mountain access, many families feel overwhelmed when they anticipate this year’s ski season. And, when you factor in the cost of lift tickets and passes, many aren’t certain we’ll even get our money’s worth. But, if you’re going to brave the slopes, here are a few things to think about and anticipate to make your experience go as smoothly as possible. THINK AHEAD This winter, forget about impulse decisions to waltz in for a few runs. This season, many resorts won’t have walk-up ticket sales and reservations will be key for almost everything from lifts to rental to lunch. Think a few weeks ahead and make reservations hat will get you through your entire visit. Check websites to see how the ski area is adjusting for COVID-19. What are the mask requirements? MAKE THE MOST OF NEWLY FLEXIBLE POLICIES With several major airlines getting rid of change fees, many skiers are securing cheap flights, just in case. Similarly, you can book many accommodations with no-penalty cancellations that allow for 10

last-minute pivots—a chain hotel might be more flexible than an Airbnb, but it might also feature more common areas where social distancing is harder. Many resorts also know this, and their pass policies reflect that. The IKON Pass offers the opportunity to defer the amount spent on your 20202021 pass to the 2021-2022 season if the pass goes completely unused. And, at a almost $600 cost, almost no family can stand to lose that money. THINK SMALL Popular resorts like Vail can draw big crowds on weekends and holidays. Since they will operate at partial capacity, you may not be able to go on your preferred dates. Snowy Range in Wyoming is
shorter than a two-hour drive from the Northern Front Range and the lift tickets are much less expensive. Eldora, just west of Boulder, is even closer, but oftentimes also busy due to this proximity. But the resort is smaller and the parking is free. BYO EVERYTHING If you have your own gear, bring it, because rentals are going to be a bit of a hassle. Likewise, be ready to boot up in your car since locker rooms are likely to be either closed or restricted. In fact, think of your car as a home base and stock it with items that used to be easy to get on the slopes: water, snacks, tissues, sunscreen, lunch, masks, sanitizer.

Scrapbooks preserve memories Spark hands-on indoor creativity with memory keeping THERESA BAER
S
crapbooks keep memories alive and offer a hands-on creative activity you can work on with your children this winter. If you haven’t done this together before, start small, choosing one specific event like a birthday or holiday to focus on. Other project ideas could be travel adventures, summer fun or best friends. Print pictures at home or upload your pictures to an online printing site to pick up at a local store or have prints mailed to you directly. Base the project on your child’s age and capabilities. For younger children, scrapbooks can be as simple as a few pieces of cardstock paper stapled or tied together with ribbon. At a minimum, provide colorful paper, scissors to cut out pictures, glue and possibly stickers, stamps, washi tape or ribbon to use as embellishments. Help them choose where to place pictures and ask them to add words to describe the picture or person shown. For older children or teens, scrapbooks can be more elaborate. They, too, can make a book of papers using a hole punch and ribbon or purchase a multi-page bound memory book. Have fun selecting acid-free (better to preserve artwork) background papers from the many colors, themes and textures now available at craft stores. Local scrapbooking stores also offer layout ideas, themed kits that can include the book, papers, adhesives and embellishments like stamps, stickers, ribbons and die cuts. Ranea Hasstedt,

Tips for Beginners: • Choose one event in time to scrapbook. • Pick a color scheme for a more uniform look. • Choose one photo as a focal point and use a few additional smaller photos as supporting details to tell the rest of the story. • Crop photos to highlight a specific expression and eliminate unnecessary backgrounds.
owner of Scrap 2 It, suggests 3–8 pictures on a 2-page spread and to make sure those facing pages match one another. But most importantly, Hasstedt says “Focus on the pictures, not the embellishments. The goal is to tell your story with the pictures.” If you make an appointment, Scrap 2 It in Fort Collins will close its shop for a bit for a FREE, private class to help you along! Also encourage your kids to journal a bit throughout the book to provide their perspective of the pictures and include dates and names. No matter their age, embolden your child’s imagination and creativity. Don’t fuss over it being perfect. Simply enjoy the activity and remembering the moment in time you’re celebrating.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA Last month, on December 19, people across the country came together for National Wreaths Across America (WAA) Day to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach younger generations the value of freedom. In Greeley’s Linn Grove Cemetery, volunteers laid over 1,200 evergreen wreaths on the graves of veterans to honor hometown heroes and recognized their service to our community and nation. Participants socially distanced and spectators were able to watch a brief live-streamed program that consisted of a color guard, National Anthem, WAA Proclamation read by Mayor John Gates, and presentation of ceremonial wreaths. BE READY FOR KINDERGARTEN If you’ve got a 4-year-old, look to the “Ready Set Kindergarten! Guide” from Be Ready Larimer County to help you prepare your
child for success in kindergarten. Available in both English and Spanish, the guide can be found online at www.bereadylarimercounty. org/kindergarten, and provides fun activities for making friends and getting along in the classroom; tips to get ready for reading, writing, and math; a month-by-month guide to keep you on track with kindergarten registration, vaccinations, and more. LOVELAND TEEN VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES Teens in Loveland can still volunteer their time despite the ongoing pandemic. Loveland Public Library offers volunteer kits for pick up at their Teen Hangout. Designed to take about an hour, teens complete the activity safely at home and return the items to receive either volunteer service credit at school or simply the good feelings that come from helping others. Teens can complete one volunteer bag per week and activities include Painting rocks for local senior centers; Creating fleece dog toys for the Larimer Humane Society; Decorating masks that will be given to teens without them; Creating no-sew fleece hats/scarves for local emergency shelters and food kitchens. When returned to the library, the items are quarantined and then donated to the appropriate local nonprofit. The traveling exhibition “War Comes Home: The Legacy” highlights historical and contemporary letters, offering an intimate perspective into the thoughts and emotions of veterans and their families upon a soldier’s homecoming. Spanning conflicts from the Civil War through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the exhibition exposes aspects of wartime separation, the adjustment to life back at home, and the costs of war. Original exhibition dates are January 23 through August 21, though dates could change due to COVID-19. Visit https:// greeleymuseums.com to verify dates. ALL FOR FALL CAMPAIGN HELPS LOCAL NONPROFITS The Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority recently ran
a month-long “All for Fall” campaign where 14 downtown businesses participated in inviting customers to ‘round-up’ their purchases to the nearest dollar to support four local nonprofits. In total, the campaign raised $9,869.85 which was split evenly and donated to the four participating nonprofits including The Food Bank for Larimer County, The Family Center/La Familia, Outreach Fort Collins and Neighbor to Neighbor. Thanks to those that rounded up! 5210+ CHALLENGE IN FEBRUARY The Healthy Kids 5210+ Challenge is an annual program held in February where students, school staff and parents keep track of their activity minutes and other 5210 healthy habits. Prize money is awarded to schools with the highest percentage of participants. Mindfulness matters
Improve attention, reduce stress and feel compassion and empathy LEA HANSON
T
he concept of mindfulness has become an increasingly understood term and an everbroadening demographic is welcoming the practice into their lives and daily routines. Practicing mindfulness has been shown to improve attention and reduce stress as well as increase the ability to regulate emotions and feel compassion and empathy. Mindfulness also is widely considered an effective psychotherapy treatment for adults, children, and adolescents with aggression, ADHD, or mental health problems such as anxiety. Mindfulness can not only help kids have empathy and compassion, it can also help academic performance. Because practicing mindfulness enhances kids’ self-concept, self-regulation, and self-management, and planning and organizational skills, the impact the practice can have on kids’ student identities is noticeable. And for kids who struggle with school—whether academically, environmentally, or both—this can feel like a life-changer. Students learn about attending to the here and now and being present with the people that they interact with, with themselves, [and] with their environment in a non-judgmental way. HOW TO TEACH MINDFULNESS AT HOME Practicing mindfulness at home is the best way to ensure the mindset “sticks” and becomes embedded into everyday life for the long haul. Here are some strategies for teaching mindfulness at home: • Take a “Brain Break”—Taking a brain break means taking a deep breath and calming oneself for three to five minutes to quiet the mind, be present, and just focus. Parents can encourage 16
| RMPARENT
their kids to take a brain break during homework time, during stressful situations, or simply when transitioning from one activity to the next. • Go on “Listening Walks”— Practicing mindful awareness during everyday activities is a way to embed the practice into life while experiencing fewer big changes and shifts. Like walking and eating, to teach kids to truly be in that moment
and not thinking about tomorrow’s math test or Saturday’s birthday party. Parents can do a “listening walk” with their children, asking them what sounds they hear, what the sounds remind them of, and how they help them remember a happy time or appreciate a happy experience. • Use Technology—We know now that screens can be teachers as well as brain killers. Apps like Stop, Breathe & Think offer kids interactive activities in a gamified way that can help kids understand mindfulness in a way that feels current and relatable.

olorado: 300 days of sunshine a year. A young, active population. Lots of outdoor places to explore. Yet, our 2019 teen suicide rate is nearly double the nation’s average, according to a United Health Foundation study. Why? And what can parents do to protect their kids? TALK, LISTEN, THEN TALK SOME MORE The best way to protect your preteens and teens against depression and suicide is to keep the conversation flowing. Make it a habit to ask openended questions and give responses without judgment. “Check in with your kids regularly. Ask how school’s going, how friendships are going. Even if they shut you down, keep checking in,” says Alison Hartman, LMFT, Program Manager of Colorado Spirit, a crisis counselor program through

SummitStone Health Partners, formed to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Listen for key words that signal that your child may be depressed or thinking about suicide, even vaguely. You might hear your teen say, ‘Nothing matters,’ or ‘Why should I bother or even care.’ Or, they might say something more obvious, like, ‘I wish I was never born,’ or ‘You’d be better off without me,’ or even, ‘I want to die.’ Don’t write these words off as teen melodrama. Take them seriously. “It’s okay to ask your depressed or anxious teen if they have ever thought about ending their life. Parents worry that if they’re wrong they will plant a seed and give their teen the idea of suicide, but research shows this isn’t the case,” Hartman adds. When your teens do talk, reassure them that they are not alone, that
everyone has hard feelings sometimes, and that these feelings won’t last forever. If you are concerned, seek help immediately. You or your teen can call SummitStone’s 24-Hour Crisis Line at (970) 494-4200, option 4 or text TALK to 38255 anytime. SummitStone provides mental health services to all ages in Fort Collins, Loveland and Estes Park. Hartman suggests that if your teen won’t talk with you, see if there is a family friend, older cousin or grandparent that you could enlist to reach out and have a conversation. Isolation and loneliness are common feelings for teens who attempt suicide. Do your best to stay calm and resist forcing the conversation. “As parents, if we are concerned we can push kids to talk, right now, but that can make kids shut down. Even if
The connection between social media and teen depression
There’s a reason technology execs don’t let their kids have screen time, including social media. They understand how it’s designed to keep kids hooked, and the emotional damage it can do. Spending a lot of time on social media is not good for anyone’s mental health. Data shows a national increase in teen depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide attempts, right around the time social media became available on mobile phones in 2009. Jonathan Haidt, a professor at New York University who studies the phenomenon, points to data on the number of preteens and teens admitted to the hospital for harming themselves. Numbers went up 189 percent for preteen girls ages 10-14, with suicide rates for the same group jumping to 151 percent in 2011. It’s a topic that’s tackled in the recent Netflix film, The Social Dilemma. As a parent, it’s important to stay on top of your pre-teen and teen’s social media use. More likely than not, if you ask them if they think they use too much social media they will say yes. According to a Pew research study, 60 percent of teens said that their age group spends too much time online, and 41 percent admitted that they overdo social media. Another study showed teens spend about nine hours each day online. That’s time that could be spent being active or connecting to family and friends. TIPS TO LIMIT SOCIAL MEDIA TIME
they don’t share, give them permission to talk whenever they want, with a promise that you are there to listen,” Hartman says. WATCH FOR SIGNS THAT LEAD TO SUICIDE Larimer County reports that 17.3 percent of surveyed youth in recent years considered suicide in the past 12 months, with 45 percent of LGBTQ+ students saying they made a plan for a suicide attempt in the past 12 months. “Girls attempt suicide more often than boys, but boys complete more often because they are more willing to use lethal means, like firearms,” Hartman says. Studies show that teens who have suffered a major loss like a break up or death, or who abuse substances are at a higher risk for suicide. So are kids who are
1. Have a relaxed conversation Ask your teen open-ended questions about their social media use. Ask about what social media they use and what they like about it. Then, ask them what they don’t like about it. Question how it makes them feel afterwards. If they don’t know, make a note to check in with them right after using it to get a sense of their feelings. Discuss how much time they think they should spend each day on social media. Their answer just might surprise you. Negotiate an amount of time that feels acceptable to you. 2. Set up ways to limit use For tweens especially, set strict rules around device use. For example, at certain times—dinner, bedtime—the device is put away. Ban notifications so your teen doesn’t get interrupted constantly by dings for every text, post or email. Literally, those dings are designed to pull people back to their devices. Cut the leash. Set up time limits on use. Try Apple’s Screen Time feature to limit social media time and block apps. To do so, go to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits. 3. Delay getting your kids devices If you haven’t bought your older child a cell phone yet, hold off. The average age kids in the US get their first cell phone is 10 years old—a time when most kids are not yet equipped with a ton of self-control. Studies show that 50 percent of kids have social media accounts by age 12. Bill Gates didn’t let his kids have a smartphone until they were 14 years old. That gives you all the answer you need to the question of whether or not too much media is healthy for kids.
publicly humiliated, pressured by peers, have a family history of suicide, and access to weapons. Red flags can be an unexpected decline in grades, abandonment of favorite activities, depression, aggressiveness and changes in mood. “Depression can manifest differently in teens than adults. Teens might seem irritable or have an attitude. They might self-harm. They might be lethargic, and be more isolated or withdrawn from family and friends,” Hartman says. In her work, she is concerned that
with the pandemic teens don’t have easy access to school counselors right down the hall, or that online schooling is causing teens to feel isolated from their peers. “Thankfully, we haven’t seen an increase in the number of suicides in teens over the past year in Northern Colorado—even with the pandemic,” Hartman says. She urges parents to be extra vigilant during these strange times and to stay connected with your teens, and seek help if you are concerned. RMPARENT

arnyard animals are waiting for you at The Farm at Lee Martinez Park. Of course, a few restrictions have been added—one-way traffic, masks required, no oats for sale—but you can see everything there. That includes the 19th-century homestead house. The farm has been open again since June and Supervisor Bridget Brownell hopes that it will stay open. “Everything is a gamble,” she says. “We’re hoping to do camps again next summer.” The farm is open for now, but Bridget suggests calling ahead or checking the website. The challenge is to fill at least part of your family’s free time with something active and engaging that does not have a screen, whether at home or, with proper precautions, in the once-friendly out-there. One of the keys is to get out of the house as often as possible. Check out the following suggestions or talk to neighbors and friends or go online to 20

Instructional Focus Programming Advanced Placement Schools:
Fort Collins, Fossil Ridge, Rocky Mountain, Poudre, Poudre Global Academy
Advanced Placement: Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide students the opportunity to take college-level courses and exams while enrolled in high school. AP courses are college courses, utilizing the same text and requirements as those that are taught at the university, delivered by district faculty. Alternative Program/School: Specialized assistance for students requiring nontraditional learning environments. Arts and Technology Schools: Curriculum is delivered through a focus on arts and technology using visual, literary, and performing arts projects along with technology. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID): AVID is an elementary through postsecondary college readiness system that is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance using methods based in effective instruction. Bilingual/Dual Language Immersion: Programs offered feature a dual language instructional method with 50 percent of teaching occurring in English and 50 percent in Spanish.
Concurrent Enrollment: Concurrent enrollment in college courses gives students the opportunity to graduate from high school with college credits through a partnership with local colleges. Eligible students are able to take college courses while still in high school either on the high school campus or at the local college. Programs vary and are based on eligibility. Core Knowledge: The Core Knowledge Sequence is based on the concept that what children are able to learn at any given moment depends upon what they already know, which in turn is a function of previous experience and teaching. The Core Knowledge Sequence presents a specific and sequential academic learning process for students to build knowledge and skills from year to year. Expeditionary Learning: Expeditionary learning is a non-traditional, hands-on, experiencedbased approach to learning. It is based on the idea that students learn more by experiencing the world around them.
Students engage in interdisciplinary, indepth study of compelling topics, in groups and in their community, with assessment coming through cumulative projects, public presentations, and portfolios. International Baccalaureate (IB): A school with official International Baccalaureate status is known as an IB World School. IB schools follow a vigorous curriculum that develops internationally minded learners who take action to make a positive impact on the world. IB students ask questions, think critically, construct their own meaning, and reflect on their learning. High school students may earn college credit based on their IB exam scores. Leader in Me: The Leader in Me program is an innovative, school-wide model that emphasizes a culture of student empowerment and helps unleash each child’s full potential. It is based on Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.® Magnet/Lab School: These schools offer traditional curriculum while allowing students interested in the school’s special focus to pursue it to a greater depth. Many magnet schools integrate their magnet focus into all subjects. Online/Hybrid Learning: This hybrid alternative to traditional school may appeal to students who learn best through blended instruction—a combination of online and on campus. Students are able to work at his or her academic level and learning pace. Private School: Private schools are funded primarily through tuition, rather than relying on public tax dollars, and therefore choose their own educational methods. Project-Based Learning: Project-Based Learning is an instructional approach built on authentic learning experiences, which naturally engage student interest and motivation. Projects are designed to answer a relevant question or solve a real problem that reflects the types of learning and work people do in the everyday world. Science, Technology, Engineering, (Art), and Math (STEM/STEAM): STEM offers a framework for teaching the interconnected nature of the various disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, (Arts) and Math as it is practiced and experienced in the real world. Grounded in standards-based curriculum, these programs incorporate problem solving, critical thinking, scientific reasoning, inquiry, and innovation into the application of learning.

Getting back to life with Covid-19 Colorado moved into the “Safer At Home” phase of reopening on April 27th and, as of this writing, that order expires on May 26th, 2020. The next planned phase is titled “Protect Our Neighbors” and is focused on a more normal social life, while still being protective against the spread of Covid-19. What does all of this mean though? What does the future look like? When can our kids go back to school? First off, we need to understand that these orders and timelines are a general guide and are flexible. If new case numbers begin to rise, we can go back to “Safer At Home” or even “Stay At Home” orders. We have to be ready to make adjustments to our lives as are necessary. We also need to be realistic with what our near future looks like with this pandemic. In reality, we are looking at many more months of precautions. Even with our modest control measures currently in place the medical community is expecting a peak for the pandemic to be around July. Then, its expected that we will continue to see cyclical periods of new cases for the next 12 to 18 months, until we can mass produce an effective and safe vaccine. While it is true that this virus luckily spares children from severe, or even moderate illness, kids can still be a source of spread to the more vulnerable populations. School closures were an effective way to help slow the spread due
to less interactions between children, families, teachers and everyone involved in educating our youth. There is no doubt it has helped to save countless lives. The state of Colorado is currently still hopeful that we will be able to open schools in the fall. However, this is an ongoing situation and that may end up being pushed further back. It is important to understand that the precautions we are taking today will have impacts on when things like schools and businesses can return to normal schedules. One thing that we do need to come to terms with is that when schools do open back, it will likely be under different circumstances than we are used to. There will be temperature checks, and restrictions for returning to school after illness. There will likely be new rules for drop-off and pick-up that reflect our social distancing guidelines. School sports, concerts, plays, and assemblies will likely be much more restrictive for a while, maybe even years. As our children are integral parts of our lives, we have to understand that the changes they will experience may not be directly related to their own health. These sacrifices and changes are for their neighbors, their grandparents, their friends who have chronic illnesses. It is for their communities. We are all in this together and will get through this together.

INSTRUCTOR NAMED ALBERT EINSTEIN DISTINGUISHED EDUCATION FELLOW Machin Norris, a STEM teacher at Northridge High School, has been named to the Albert Einstein Distinguished Education Fellowship Program through the U.S. Department of Energy. The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship (AEF) Program provides a unique opportunity for K-12 educators in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to serve in the national education arena. Fellows spend 11 months
working in Federal agencies or in U.S. Congressional offices, applying their knowledge and classroom experiences to national education program and/or education policy efforts. At the end of the Fellowship, educators are prepared to return home, equipped with access to a national network of education leaders and programs, a better understanding of the challenges and possibilities in STEM education, and a renewed passion for teaching, ready to make significant contributions to their schools and school districts. Ms. Norris will serve her fellowship at the National Air and Space Museum. In previous years, Ms. Norris has been named a National Georgraphic Certified Educator and the Honewell Educator at Space Academy. She was also a finalist last year for Colorado Teacher of the Year. thompson school district news Loveland High senior’s impressive accomplishments Loveland High senior Delaney McNally has always liked to stay busy. Her list of activities and interests is mind-boggling, and even during the Coronavirus pandemic, she has managed to fill her time—whether it’s playing with her new puppy Ogma and her 5-year-old boxer Quinn, finding creative ways to run the purpose project she started in 2014, or preparing for college and the next phase of her life. “I like learning new and different things,” Delaney explains, going through her extensive list of hobbies, which includes knitting, baking, biking and rock climbing—and those are just the things she does in her free time. Delaney is also a captain on the varsity swim team, LHS Student Council treasurer, a volunteer for KidsPak, and a member of National Honor Society. She plans to go to the University of Colorado-Boulder after she graduates in May, and is excited about their biomedical engineering program. Delaney’s dad is a physician’s assistant in an emergency room, and her mom, who was just elected to the Board of County Commissioners for Larimer County, has a degree in kinesiology. “I think I get my drive to serve from my mom and my science exposure from my dad,” Delaney says. Originally, Delaney wanted to be a doctor, but eventually she realized what she actually wanted to do was be in a lab helping doctors do their jobs. She describes biomedical engineering as “engineering concepts
28

within the human body.” Delaney thinks it is her love of math that makes her apply facts and figures to her many interests. “I was raised on doing my research. If you’re going to say something, you need to have the facts to back it up,” she says. Another of Delaney’s passions
is Generation Connect, the purpose project she created when she was in middle school and now runs with a team, partnering with organizations at Colorado State University and in the Larimer County community. Delaney had the idea for the group after her grandfather spent months in the hospital after a surgery. As the family gathered to see him when he was able to return home, he admonished everyone for their disconnect, and told them to put down their phones and talk to him. “After he said that, I looked around the room and realized he was right: Every one of us was on our phones.” As a result, Delaney created Generation Connect to encourage people to put down technology and connect with the people around them. The organization hosts events for
people from different generations and backgrounds to get together and talk to each other. Since the pandemic began last spring, Generation Connect has hosted virtual events, maintaining the goal of providing people with opportunities to connect. “Our team creates such a safe place to talk,” she says. With all of her many responsibilities, Delaney says she has had to learn how to balance everything, a lesson that has not always come easy. “I know my limits now and how much I can take,” she says. “I am busy, but I’ve learned if I can’t handle something, I ask for help or say no.” She also says she and her senior classmates can’t wait for normalcy to return to their lives once the pandemic is over. “I miss the little things—seeing a favorite teacher every day, just being with people,” she says but adds that she thinks there may still be good things to come from this. “I think people are going to not take these things for granted anymore after this.”

time out The poetry of super heroes Tales and connections span generations TIM VAN SCHMIDT
T
he challenge came down from my 5-year-old grandson recently to write a “song” about Spider-
Man. So I wrote him a rap and here’s how it turned out:
Peter Parker A spider bit him on the hand. He felt a little woozy and could hardly stand. The spider gave him all of his power And Peter grew stronger with every hour. Spider-Man was the name that he took. At least that’s what they say in the comic book. He could shoot out a web and crawl on the wall. He could swing around a building and never fall. Spider-Man made all the bad guys lose. And nobody would want to be in their shoes. Peter Parker was really just a kid But he became a hero with all that SpiderMan did.
What my grandson and I share is the knowledge that not only is Spider-Man cool, but also that his real identity was Peter Parker, who was bitten on the hand by a special spider and that gave him “spider powers.” I came to this knowledge in my youth through comic books. There were a few TV shows, but mostly it all came from the colorful pages my brothers and I would pour over after we plunked our dimes on the drug store counter and took home our prizes. Nowadays, these stories are mostly transmitted through the plethora of super hero movies featuring Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Superman, Black Panther, Spider-Man and so many others. But I don’t think my 5-year-old fellow fan watches any of those. I figure that he knows about these characters mostly from the toy aisles in the store— full of brightly colored action figures. I’ve also noticed that his other little friends know about these characters 44

too—they wear super hero costumes at Halloween and pretend to be their favorites during playtime. Somehow they are all getting versed in the same lore. I’m contributing. After I read the Peter Parker piece to him, my grandson immediately assigned me a new “song” project: Batman. That’s a tougher story, but I gave it a shot: Bruce Wayne During the day, he was a man who was rich. But then at night he got a very dark itch To put on a cape and put on a mask And go out to do a hero’s task. As The Batman, he fought a lot of bad dudes Like The Joker and The Penguin—they all left in bad moods. He comes in on a rope or a plane from on high When the Bat Signal shines on a cloud in the sky.
My grandson is aware that Batman’s
real name is Bruce Wayne and he knows about some of the super villains that he battles. But Batman’s origin is due to a childhood trauma, something perhaps better discussed later on. And discuss it we shall, because swapping these stories will continue. My super hero “songs” are so popular that my new assignment is Captain America. He’s the “super soldier” created by science who becomes the point man for the Allies during World War II, saves the world by jumping on a rocket but gets frozen in uncharted waters until a group of other super heroes—The Avengers—find him, thaw him out and make him their leader. Now, how do you make all of that stuff rhyme? Tim Van Schmidt is a writer and photographer—and grandpa—based in Fort Collins.
