From the Publisher

I’m not dead yet… This issue is full of inspiration

I PLAY THE GUITAR…not real well, but well enough to entertain myself and torture Kristin, my wife. Sometimes someone will say to me that they wished that they had learned to play the guitar or the piano or learned to speak French. And I always respond with a, “well, you’re not dead yet.” A few years ago we gave my dad keyboard lessons at a local piano store as a gift. He had a keyboard that he enjoyed playing but this gave him the opportunity to progress. He loved it. It was a series of group lessons with other recreational, shall we say, players. It just made it more fun for him after that to go bang on the ivories…well, actually plastic keys, but that’s not so poetic. In an informative and inspirational story, Bear Gephardt talks about how learning keeps us alive and lively. Through personal examples, he shows us how diving in and learning something completely new invigorates people. And then, he ticks through a series of options that we have here in northern Colorado to help make us life-long learners. It almost made me want to go learn to weld. Bob Calhoun takes a different tack on a similar theme in his Better Balance column. He talks about a second wind and the opportunity we have slow down and view the world from a different perspective and embrace the possibilities. In an issue packed with inspirational stuff about aging well… Kim Sharpe, as she often does (well, in this magazine, anyway) talks about S.E.X. and transforming our approach as we age that so that we continue to enjoy it. And finally, maybe the most interesting idea of all…we meet Dave the volunteer at the end of the magazine. And he says one of the most profound things I’ve heard in a while…that there are all these volunteers out there who do what they do because (and here it is) it just needs to be done. Wow! That got me. We think of all the stated reasons people volunteer…to give back, to feel good about helping people, to work with other like-minded people, to get me out of the house…but doing something simply because you could see that it needed done, with no thought of reward or praise or self-satisfaction, now that must be the definition of altruism! After reading through these stories and the rest of the issue, which is also packed with good stuff, I feel pretty good about embracing my elderhood and my “second wind.” I hope you do too! Thanks for reading, Scott

Don’t take that FALL

ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL and Prevention, thousands of people 65 and older die each year from falls, most of which occur in the home. Begin with balance classes and exercise to maintain stability and then implement these simple home remedies to keep your home fall safe. 12 |

Get rid of trip hazards like scatter rugs, electrical cords, small furniture, pet gear, shag carpeting, and garden hoses. If you must have scatter rugs, be sure they have rubber non-skid backing or use double-sided tape to secure them. Minimal waxing helps reduce slick floors. Wear non-slip shoes. Keep hallways, bathrooms, and

kitchens well lit with night lights. Place frequently used items in pantry, cabinets, and closets within easy reach to avoid the use of ladders or step-stools. Install grab bars in bathrooms, a second railing on stairwells, and railings on outside steps. Keep rubber mats in bathtubs. Practice these simple measures to insure fall safety in your home.

Nothing like home cooking DO YOU FIND IT HARD TO COOK for one or two now? Do you rely on fast and frozen foods and tired recipes that fail to serve your dietary needs? Consider changing your cooking habits by participating in classes from local cooking schools or senior clubs. They teach home-cooking, food preparation with fresh ingredients, and new, simple recipes for eating/cooking pleasure. In Fort Collins try The Cooking Studio (123 N. College) and Foodies Culinary Academy (4206 S. College). Each offers nutritious cooking experiences in fully-equipped, modern

kitchens. They provide recipes and well-qualified chefs who teach classes from ethnic to health and nutrition. For example, Linda Hoffman, of Come Back to the Table, teaches antiinflammatory recipe sessions such as “Rebuild Your Gut, Rebuild Your Life”. The class features foods that address all those nagging digestive issues. Get information at 970-407-8828 or her website. The Season’s Club, McKee Medical Center, offers low-cost cooking classes geared toward healthy eating. Subscribe to their “Season’s Greetings” newsletter. Call 970-820-4097 for more information.

Foot Health: Seasonal Factors Put The Focus On Feet

W

ell, we’ve made it through the Holidays and welcomed in the New Year! This time of year is one for resolutions and many of us become motivated to take better care of ourselves. The following are our recommendations for caring for your feet during these long winter months. DRY SKIN Our cold Colorado winter air is extremely dry. This, in addition to the indoor heating, can cause major issues with dry skin. To prevent and treat scaly and cracked skin it is best to use a thick moisturizing cream at least twice daily. Avoid harsh soaps and increase your water intake to stay well hydrated. The skin can develop painful cracks that are difficult to heal. If deep fissures develop it is best to see your podiatrist as these can become troublesome and develop bacterial infections.

COLD FEET Do your feet turn into icicles once the temperature drops? As your body adjusts to the cold, it draws more blood to your vital organs, leaving your extremities poorly perfused. If you are outdoors for a long period of time in cold weather watch for skin colour changes and numbness and tingling in your toes. This may be frostnip and can quickly develop into the more serious frostbite. Avoid this by wearing properly fitted water resistant boots and warm socks. And of course use good judgement and get yourself inside if your feet get too cold. INGROWN TOENAILS While it is important to keep your feet properly shod during the winter months, one downside of this is the incidence of ingrown nails. Avoid this painful problem by wearing shoes and boots that fit correctly and have a wider toebox. Toes should never touch the ends of the shoes. When caring for toenails cut and file toenails straight across. Don’t play around with potential ingrown nails as this could lead to an infection. Your podiatrist can help to remove the ingrown toenail safely. SLIPS & FALLS A slip on the ice can easily become a trip to the doctor. Make sure your shoes are stable and that the outer sole is slip resistant. If a dressier shoe is required for work or an event, bring them with you, but wear good stable shoes for your commute. Also, don’t forget to slow down and take smaller steps. A large stride or fast pace can make it harder to keep your balance if you find yourself suddenly on slippery ground. Kate Johnson DPM is a board qualified podiatrist practicing at A STEP AHEAD FOOT & ANKLE CENTER, in Loveland and Fort Collins, along with Michael Burns DPM, Robert Schulte DPM and Chad Knutsen DPM. Currently accepting new patients. Fifty&Better | 15 Dr. Kate also now seeing patients in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Move to the groove WHETHER YOU PREFER the dance moves of Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, John Travolta or Madonna, moving to the groove of music is an excellent way to get some exercise, socialize and have fun. Dave Arns, owner and lead instructor at DancerGuy. com, says dancing is the perfect activity for people as they age because, “it can be high or low impact, and people can proceed at whatever pace is appropriate for them. Besides, it’s a lot more fun than running on a treadmill or calisthenics. Not only that, but research has repeatedly shown that dancing is the best form of exercise to keep the brain healthy well into advancing age. Because dancing requires so many mental processes to be happening simultaneously, and integrated into an aesthetically pleasing whole, it exercises the mind in a most enjoyable way.” Locally, dance schools like the one Arns runs is where you can learn Swing, Latin, Ballroom or Country. There also are dance clubs, like the Good Times Dance Club, that hosts opportunities for dancers to practice their moves at venues in Fort Collins, Greeley and Loveland. If you prefer not to show off your eclectic dance style in public, simply turn on some of your favorite tunes and dance with abandon in your living room. The bottom line? Shake your booty, Baby! Your body, mind and soul will thank you. 16 |

Love your heart,

Transforming our sexual selves DO YOU THINK SEX IS ONLY FOR the younger crowd? Think again before eliminating it from your list of enjoyable activities. “You wouldn’t think of neglecting your feelings as you age and you wouldn’t think that as you age you should start to neglect your physical body (like suddenly stop eating well because you’re aging). Similarly, there’s no reason to neglect your sexuality as you age either,” says Carl Nassar, professional counselor and director at Heart-Centered Counseling. Nassar does concede that, “As we age, how we express ourselves sexually may change because as we age we also mature and heal, and find healthier ways to experience and express who we are, both emotionally and sexually. It may change because our bodies change, impacting how we express ourselves physically and sexually. But change is not about ending; it’s about transforming. And our work as we age is to transform our sexual selves in a way that allows us to experience sex in a manner consistent with our maturing emotions and our changing physiology.” So the next time you think about sex, perhaps don’t think. Just do it.

love your life

IF YOU WANT TO LOVE YOUR LIFE, start by showing your ticker a whole lot o’ love. “Being heart healthy, before or after 50, is essential for quality of life as it is dependent on being able to do those things that make you happy—no matter if you live for knitting or marathons or cooking or being outdoors,” says Dr. Gary Luckasen, cardiologist and medical director of research, UCHealth Northern Colorado. And caring for your heart doesn’t need to be complicated. The doctor says to keep it simple: 1 Never smoke. Period. 2 Check your cholesterol and blood pressure and get treatment if they are abnormal. 3 Eat smaller portions. If you can do this, most diets are fine. 4 Be active. Thirty minutes of exercise per day is ideal, but just getting up and moving every half hour will help immensely. 5 Sleep at least eight hours per day. Rest makes all of life’s difficulties so much easier to face. 6 Try new things and meet new people because adventure opens up avenues for you to be mentally and physically active. The bottom line, according to Luckasen, is: “The engine that drives your body is your heart and the better you care for it, the more joy you will experience in your life.” You gotta love it!

Better Balance

‘SECOND WIND,’ a metaphor coined by philosopher William James in the early twentieth century, describes a transition, most often sudden and unexpected, to a state of renewed energy, new possibility, new hope. As I study, as well as live, life beyond 50, I find the idea of a ‘second wind’ helpful in understanding and embracing the last third of life. We are familiar with the athlete catching his or her ‘second wind’ during extended physical effort, finding a surge of new energy, restored breath, a sense of more effortless movement. We may remember times in our own lives of great fatigue, emotional stress or work pressure, when new found reserves allowed us to push on with the task at hand. Or times of discouragement when things suddenly ‘came together,’ discovering fresh ideas and new vision. Life beyond 50 presents an opportunity for such a transformative experience, a time to catch a ‘second wind’. Beyond adulthood, beyond the routines, demands and rapid pace of midlife, our later years present us with an opportunity to rediscover parts of ourselves, view the world from a fresh perspective, complete unfinished goals, and go deeper emotionally and spiritually. We can move from a time of acquiring and building to one of downsizing, unburdening, simplifying, clarifying and intensifying…embracing meaningful roles in the second half of life…a ‘second wind’.

Second wind

Boomers second chance

IN HIS BOOK, ‘Second Wind: Navigating the Passage to a Slower, Deeper, and More Connected Life’ (Simon & Schuster 2012), Dr. Bill Thomas asserts it’s no easy task for ‘boomers’ to catch this ‘second wind’ as they move beyond the harried pace of adulthood with the responsibilities of work, family and finances. However, there are great rewards for those who do choose to rebalance life in ways to help embrace opportunities our sixth decade and beyond offer. There are ‘denialists’, he suggests, who go to extremes to defy the reality of aging. A second group Thomas labels ‘realists’, those who do all they can to ‘kick the can of adulthood down the road’ until death’s door. The enthusiasts, he adds, are those who accept the unique role of elder and choose to embrace this life stage as an opportunity to grow and change by going slower, deeper, and connecting intimately to the people, places and causes they find most important. Thomas adds, just as others writing about ‘conscious aging’, catching this ‘second wind’ beyond adulthood demands an intentional effort. The book is an interesting read…give it a look.

Slow down, you move too fast “SLOW DOWN, YOU MOVE TOO FAST, you got to make the morning last.” Simon and Garfunkel, ‘59th Street Bridge’ (1966), a song from our youth to encourage how we re-balance our remaining years. The song reminds me of a dream shared by a colleague in her late 60s illustrating how the chance to live consciously as elders could easily be missed: “Leaving a high-stakes boardroom of responsibility, I rode the elevator down to a lower floor, the door opening into a university campus. My path took me through what seemed to be a student union, passing by a large group of students humming a soft melodic tune. Giving it little notice, I continued through the union toward my next destination. Reaching my vehicle, I suddenly stopped, having a strong urge to return to the student union and the music there. Returning, I found it to be a beautiful experience. Time seemed to stop. I shed tears of gratitude, aware of how I almost missed this rich and

timeless moment in my rush to my next assignment.” Fifty and beyond is our time to reawaken to the transient nature of life, grateful we have been given additional years to live. By embracing elderhood and all its creative possibilities, we can catch the ‘second wind’ that this unique stage of life offers each of us and our community at large.

s of li Housing options for all season

e

Kim Sharp

IN THE UNITED STATES, home ownership often is equated to success; it’s an inherent part of the American Dream. However, as you age, that dream can lose its luster and even feel daunting if you become unable to maintain a house or care for yourself. An alternative to staying in your home is moving to and through a continuum of housing scenarios tailored for aging adults—from independent living to assisted living to a skilled-nursing facility. But which option is right for you or 26 |

Fifty&Better

your older relatives? To answer that question, you have to consider many factors. Katy Mason, Larimer County Office on Aging program coordinator, says, “If people want to stay in their current homes, they may need to make adaptations to it or they could choose to move to a home that incorporates universal design features to make aging in place easier. If they do choose to stay in their own homes, they should consider that at some point

Housing options defined Independent Living: Independent Living, often referred

to as retirement communities, congregate living or senior apartments, are designed specifically for independent senior adults who want to enjoy a lifestyle filled with recreational, educational and social activities with other seniors. These communities are designed for seniors who are able to live on their own, but desire the security and conveniences of community living. Some communities offer an enriched lifestyle with organized social and recreational programs as a part of everyday activities, while others provide housing with only a minimal amount of amenities or services.

Assisted living: A type of long-term care facility for elderly or disabled people who are able to get around on their own but who may need help with some activities of daily living, or simply prefer the convenience of having their meals in a central cafeteria and having nursing staff on call.

are designed for seniors who are in need of 24‑hour nursing care. Nursing facilities provide many of the same residential components of other senior care options including room and board, personal care, protection supervision, and may offer other types of therapy. Their onsite medical staff sets them apart from other types of senior housing. Registered nurses (RN), licensed practical nurses (LPN), and nurse’s aides provide care at all hours of the day.

Home Care: Home care requires a team effort involving

professionals, paraprofessionals, patients and their families. Care dedicated to promoting the physical and emotional wellbeing of the patient. Home care provides high quality, efficient, convenient and cost-effective health care in the homes of patients.

Rehabilitation: Rehabilitation provides in-patient thera-

py allowing residents to regain strength and stamina after a short-term hospitalization, long-term care, or end-of-life care.

they may need in-home health care, home-delivered meals, transportation services, etc. For this reason, some people prefer to live in an independent-living facility or assisted-living facility where meals and transportation are provided, and there are activities and plenty of opportunities for socialization. Another consideration is affordability. Whether people stay in their own homes or move to an independent or assisted-living facility, there are financial considerations.”

Reprinted with permission from Columbine Health Systems.

Skilled Nursing (Nursing Homes): Nursing Homes

Since there are many housing options, it’s best to begin exploring them early and make decisions before there’s a crisis. Cynthia Leibrock, principal at Easy Access to Health, LLC, says, “You have to make these decisions before you need them. By the time you need affordable, accessible housing, it’s too late. You won’t be able to find it then. You have to get on this early, like when you’re in your 50s and 60s.” Yvonne Myers, Columbine Health Systems director, says,

Fifty&Better | 27

“Utopia would be for older adults to tour the various levels of housing and care with their children, and after the tours, put into writing their preferences and choices. Everyone is then on the same page.” If moving out of your home to some type of senior housing feels like the right choice, Myers recommends you ask, “Who actually owns the property and what is their philosophy regarding care? Why are they in the business of providing care to older adults and the frail elderly? Their values and commitment to providing trained and adequate numbers of staff, adequate supplies to provide the care, and daily commitment to those they serve truly makes all the difference.” Leibrock advocates for people to stay in their own home and “age in place.” She says, “People inherently know that it’s not okay to live in healthcare facilities where they are forced to make multiple moves—from their home to independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing to the hospital and to hospice. With each move they lose space, possessions and a good piece of their lives. They even lose their friends who don’t want to visit them in the nursing home and be reminded of their destiny.” She feels the ideal situation is to build a home that incorporates staying power from the foundation up and is working at the policy level to make it so all new homes include the “ABCs of Universal Design.” Examples of these elements are accessible, wide routes and doorways throughout a house which are free of hazards that can cause falls and injuries; kitchen and bathroom fixture and appliance heights that can accommodate wheel

chairs and/or other assistive devices; non-slid surfaces; and glare-free lighting. When building a new, accessible home isn’t possible, Leibrock recommends “retrofitting your home with modifications that enhance independence and prevent disabling accidents.” To help people do that, she established the Rehabitat Fund** which “offers seed money and technical support for the retrofitting including a home assessment survey.” Another concept helping people age in place is one where they share housing with other maturing adults. A Colorado-based company facilitating this concept is Silvernest, which is kind of like a long-term Airbnb mixed with Match.com for seniors. “At Silvernest, we’re offering a clear solution to help Baby Boomers and empty nesters safely and seamlessly establish homesharing arrangements,” says Wendi Burkhardt, Silvernest co-founder and CEO. “Silvernest set out to develop new tools that provide an aging-in-place alternative, boldly breaking the rules of aging so more people can live in their homes on their own terms. We’re eager to create the next generation of roommates.” In addition to roommate matching, the Silvernest online platform (www.silvernest.com) offers all the resources and tips aging homeowners need to find a housemate to share their space, including background screening, lease origination and payment management services. Regardless of whether you’re making housing or other decisions related to aging, Myers says, “Healthy aging is about accepting the changes and making smart and thought-out plans that are realistic so you maintain choice and control.”

Learn more about the Rehabitat Fund at www.agingbeautifully.org. Leibrock also offers free tours of her northern Colorado home that incorporates all of the ABCs of Universal Design. Contact her at 970-484-4182 or Cynthia@agingbeautifully.org.

Bear Gebhardt

“He not busy being born is busy dying!” — Bob Dylan

WHEN JOHN GASCOYNE WAS AN UNDERGRADUATE at CSU four decades ago, his English professor, Dick Heiser, who was then in his mid-60s surprised his colleagues, and his students when he announced he was retiring from teaching English in order to enroll in Medical School. “Dr. Heiser impressed me in a lot of ways,” Gascoyne recalls, “but his example of how we can keep learning in a big way and keep changing and growing at any age, has stayed with me all these years. He didn’t get to go to Medical School—an auto accident took him in a different direction. But still, he was ready and willing. He set a great example.” Gascoyne, former Chair of the Larimer County Democratic Party, a retired lawyer and then substitute teacher in the Poudre School District, recently enrolled in the one-day Welding for Fun class offered by the Continuing Education Department at Front Range Community College. (FRCC: see www.frontrange.edu/). “It was absolutely fascinating,” he says. “I felt like a kid again, playing with really neat toys.” 30 |

Cindy Hain, a local Buddhist teacher and retired Registered Nurse, took the same one-day welding class, which FRCC offers numerous times throughout the year. She became so fascinated with the art that she signed up for FRCC’s ten-month Creative Metalworking course. “This certificate program is for the artist in you,” reads the class description. “It combines art, drawing, sculpture, and computer-aided drafting with gas tungsten arc welding.” “It breathed new life into me,” Hain says. “I had a full life already, but when I tell people about my creative metalworking, they are very surprised, say wow, and tell me I am courageous. But if I’m not doing this, what else would I be doing?” Other continuing education courses offered by FRCC, include, Accounting Basics, Build Your Own Website, Aromatherapy, Real Estate, Novel and Short Story Writing and many others, some of which are one-day introductory classes, like that for welding, and others are ongoing. In addition to the classroom courses, FRCC also offers over 350 online

courses, from basic classes leading to a G.E.D. degree to advanced courses in computers, business and the arts. “All the teachers I’ve met at FRCC really love what they do,” Hain says. “And are very helpful, and seem to really appreciate non-traditional (50+) students.” FRCC is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Continuing Education opportunities in northern Colorado. Colorado State University has an entire rainbow of offerings for “adult learners,” some of which lead to certificates, many others “just for fun.” Of particular note for 50+ people is CSU’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (see http://www. online.colostate.edu/osher/), which describes itself as a “member-based, member-driven learning community for curious minds of all ages with special attention to those ages 50 and better. Osher offers the very best in learning with no prerequisites, no tests, no stress, and no degree requirements.” Virginia Slauson, a retired Special Education teacher who continues to tutor through the Fast ForWord program, first enrolled in Osher’s “Rivers of the World,” course. “I just wanted to get a better feel for world geography,” Slauson says. She enjoyed that course so much she next signed up for an Osher lecture and demonstration titled, “The Secret Lives of Bees.” “For some reason, I was just very curious,” Slauson says. That one lecture, and visit to a beehive at Gardens on Spring Creek, led Slauson to now owning and maintaining her own backyard beehive. “I just love helping those little guys, working as a bee guardian ,” she says. ”Curiously, I find it very relaxing.” In addition to that seminar, The Gardens at Spring Creek, a local city-funded community horticulture program, offers a wide variety of programs and special events designed for local gardeners and plant enthusiasts. Upcoming events include Spring Plant Sale, Yoga in the Gardens, ARTiculture Walking Tour, Garden a’Fare and Nature’s Harvest Fest. (See http://www.fcgov.com/gardens/ programsspecial-events/adult-education) Many local nurseries, including Bath Landscape, Fort Collins Nursery and Gulley Greenhouse also offer special

events and tree and plant-oriented events for budding horticulturists. The Fort Collins Senior Center, in conjunction with other local recreational centers, offers much broader and more varied types of courses, from Aquatics to “Raptors in the Rockies” to Indian Cooking and Tai’ Chi. The catalogue for all courses, special events and special educational activities designed especially for the 50+ crowd is The Recreator, available at local libraries and fitness centers. A list of their programs can also be found online at www.fcgov.com/ recreation/seniorcenter.php Perhaps the newest and most innovative way to keep “busy being born” is through local Meet-Up groups. According to Wikipedia, “Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. Meetup allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest, such as politics, books, games, 32 |

movies, health, pets, careers or hobbies.” Northern Colorado has a particularly active and wide ranging list of “Meet-ups,” which meet up in a wide variety of places, from bars to bank basements to the trail head at local hiking sites. Topics include everything from birding to software development to meditation to polyamorous lifestyle. Most of the Meet-ups are free, though some do charge a small fee. You can browse what’s happening at www.meetup.com. If you prefer to continue your education while staying in your bathrobe next to your bedroom computer, you might want to consider UDEMY (www.udemy. com ) or COURSERA ( www.coursera. org) two of the most popular and successful online learning sites. UDEMY offers literally thousands of courses, mostly for professional development but also just for fun and curiosity’s sake, taught by anyone who makes the effort to put an on-line course together and register

it with UDEMY. Most of these courses have a small fee, although UDEMY is famous for consistently offering coupons for drastically reduced charges. (For example, a $150 course for just $10) Coursera, on the other hand, offers all their courses, many of which come with certificates, for free, and the instructors are all from accredited colleges and universities not only from the U.S. but around the world. Prestigious institutions such as Yale and Stanford often participate in Coursera offerings, making available some of their best professors. Many of these courses, again from accounting to zoology, have many thousands of classmates from around the world. This in itself can be a useful education. As Henry Ford once wrote, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. “ With all the offerings available, there’s no reason not to “stay young” in northern Colorado.

Disappear

Service into

We can always lend a helping hand Kim Sharpe

IF YOU’RE RETIRED (or not) and wondering

what to do with your spare time, perhaps you should take advice from Dave, a former Air Force major and high school teacher, who recommends you go underground. “There’s a whole movement out there to help other people, but so much of it goes unnoticed. There are invisible workers who don’t get any applause or newspaper stories or trophies.

They just do what needs to be done,” he says. Dave, 69, serves others in many ways, including through the Volunteers of America (VOA). One day each week, as part of VOA’s Meals on Wheels program, he delivers pre-made, frozen meals to people who wouldn’t otherwise have nutritious food to eat. On another day, as part of VOA’s Grocery Shopping Program, he delivers groceries to people who can’t get out to buy their own. “I feel that we’re put on this earth to help others. While we’re still able, we should be the hands and feet of those who don’t have the strength or means to help themselves.” Sylvia, a retired secretary and retail clerk, coordinates the shopping side of VOA’s grocery program. Each Monday, she and three other volunteers call approximately 60 local people to receive their grocery lists. At 7am every Wednesday, they meet

at the Fort Collins’ Albertson’s store to begin shopping for all the items on each list. The shopping is finished by 10:30am so volunteers, like Dave, who arrive by 11am, can deliver each order. Sylvia began serving as the coordinator in 2002 rather by chance. “The other coordinator at that time fell and broke her shoulder. I was already helping with the program and knew what to do, so I told her I’d just do it. I’ve been in charge ever since.” And while it’s been “very rewarding because 99-percent of the people really appreciate the service,” Sylvia says she’s going to retire from her volunteer position sometime this year. “I’m 85 and am going to have to give up my car. My reflexes just aren’t what they used to be.” Dave says, “There will come a time when every one of us can’t get out and do the physical stuff, but even then, we can help others. We can read or make phone calls. There’s so much we can do.”
