The ripple effect
How our interactions reach far beyond the moment I JUST FINISHED WRITING an essay about Gary, a friend and mentor of mine who recently died. He was about 10 years older than I am, and I first met him when I was 14 years old. He had started an outdoor adventure program for youth and I was one of the youths. That relationship lasted 45 years and changed my life in countless ways. Writing that piece caused me to reflect on how we influence people in our lives and how we are, in turn, affected by their presence in ours. As the saying goes, no one is an island. We all exist in relationship to those around us, even our pets. I pondered the idea that the littlest things that we do can ripple far beyond that individual action. As I thought about what I learned from this mentor, I realized that I carried much of that on with my interactions with other people, and they with others and on and on. From big-picture stuff that influences the trajectory of your life to little things that affect your day, every interaction seems to affect our future actions and those of others. So I make a point each day to sit for a while and then contemplate my day and the attitude with which I will approach that day. Will I be present with the people I’m in the room with? Will I act in a way that is intended to benefit me or in way that helps move us all forward? Little things, such as tone of voice or giving someone real attention, matter. The little things are, in fact, the big things. I’m not saying that I’m great at this all day, every day, but by taking that moment to reflect and realize that I am in relationship to everyone and not just this sole guy trying to make the world work out best for me changes my day and makes my interactions with everyone better than it might have been. Who knows, you might simply smile at someone who looks a little down, and then that person will show a bit of kindness to someone else, and the ripple continues. One thought I had about Gary was that he wasn’t heavy-handed as a mentor. He simply opened doors and when the time was right in my life, I was able to step through them (or not). But it was a true gift that he gave me of allowing me to peer beyond the wall and see the possibilities that life might hold in a way that I had not seen before. Thanks, Scott

Xeriscape to save water EXPERTS CONSIDER THE front range plains “high desert.” Irrigation keeps our lawns green. Saving water suggests we xeriscape lawns, garden beds and pots with proper planning and native plants. Xeriscaping is not limited to cacti and succulents. Choose from herbs like lavender, oregano, thyme, and sage. Or, Colorado native plants like yarrow, milkweed

and Black-eyed Susan. Check CSU’s website for a list of native plants which naturally adapt to climate, soil and Northern Colorado’s conditions. www.extension.colostate.edu/docs/ pubs/native/FrontRange.pdf. Purchase a soil test kit to determine your soil type—clay, sandy, rocky. Prepare the soil and install an irrigation system designed
to save water. Reduce water use by eliminating steep slopes on the south and west. Consider terracing to prevent runoff. For visual pleasure, remember the rule of thriller, filler and spiller. Begin with a thriller, those taller plants in the center or along the back. Next, sow medium sized plants and finally ground covers. Then, enjoy while saving water.
The four Rs of fall safety THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON AGING claims falls are the leading cause of older adults’ fatal injuries. They are the most common cause of nonfatal, trauma-related hospital admissions among the elderly. For your safety, take proper precautions. Begin with an eye appointment. Take balance classes. Then, follow the 4 Rs of fall safety. 1. Re-organize—furniture for a clear walk path. Use nonskid rugs and tape down corners. Wear non-skid shoes. Forego waxed floors. 2. Re-model—cabinets and position them lower. Add extra hand rails on stairways both inside and out. Install grab bars in bathrooms. Mount night lights along traffic patterns—bedrooms to bath to kitchen, stairwells and dark hallways. Install low-nap carpet or hardwood floors. 3. Re-arrange—cabinets so that often-used items are within easy reach. Hide cords, but not under rugs. 4. Re-move—throw rugs except where preventing wet slippery floors. Put away clutter. Get rid of unused furniture. Repair trip hazards. Get rid of stepstools and ladders.
Go green with natural cleaning supplies “GO GREEN” APPLIES TO everything from construction to cleaning supplies. Although stores stock shelves with “natural” cleaners, some people prefer making their own. Keeper of the Home, www.keeperofthehome.org/homemade-all-natural-cleaning-recipes/, says white vinegar and baking soda clean just about everything. The site offers a multitude of cleaning recipes for every room and surface. Wellness Mama www.well nessmama.com/6244/natural-cleaning/ lists likes to keep these items on hand in order to create cleaners. • white vinegar • liquid castile soap or Sal Suds • natural salt • baking soda • borax • hydrogen peroxide • lemons • Microfiber cloths • Essential oils (optional) • glass spray bottle or two
Start with this easy glass cleaner recipe: • 2 cups of water (preferably distilled or filtered) • 2 tablespoons white vinegar • 10 drops essential oil – optional to cut the vinegar smell • Combine ingredients in a glass spray bottle. Wipe with a microfiber cloth, newspaper or paper towels. To erase residue from previous commercial cleaner use, add a couple of drops of liquid castile soap or liquid dish soap.

Better Health OUR FEET CARRY US through life and they take a beating. Without care and attention—like keeping toenails trimmed and wearing shoes that fit— our feet can sustain damage that leads to loss of feeling, infections and potential falls. Sometimes poor foot health is a symptom of chronic diseases like diabetes and circulatory disorders. Dr. Stephen Wilkinson of the Anderson Podiatry Center in Fort Collins says a staple of foot health is basic foot care, like daily washing, proper nail cutting, wearing proper socks and footwear. “Patients should make a daily foot inspection when they put shoes on and take shoes off every day to evaluate for nerve and circulatory changes, like odd sensations or numbness, color changes, loss of digit hair, cool temperature. In addition, they should inspect for cuts,
Kim Sharpe
Treat your feet well friction callus skin build-up, or areas of irritation that can progress to delayed healing areas or areas of infection. Early self-advocacy and professional evaluation/ intervention is usually enough to prevent or correct serious problems.” He also reminds us that annual examination by a trained foot health professional is recognized and encouraged by all government and commercial insurers as an essential preventative measure to combat huge healthcare expenditures. In addition, you can have your tootsies cared for at an UCHealth Aspen Club toenail service day, held every Tuesday. The cost is $35 and appointments are required; call

Holy hormones, Batman! AS WE AGE, our bodies and their systems change (you might have noticed that). Changes involving the endocrine system, which produces the hormones that regulate metabolism, sexual function, moods and more, affect women and men alike. Women primarily notice hormonal changes as they move through the stages of menopause, like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, irritability and depression. Symptoms related to hormonal changes in men include decreased energy, sleep disruptions and low libido. Greg Hoffman, who’s been an avid, long-distance runner and golfer for most of his life, experienced all of these. He felt like his get-up-and-go got up and went. After investigating several 16 |
Fifty&Better
causes and solutions, Hoffman decided to try bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Bioidentical hormones, made from plants like yams and soy, are identical in molecular structure to the hormones human bodies make, so they are thought to be more natural that other synthetic hormones. In BHRT, pellets are inserted beneath the skin, often in the hip area, and consistently release hormones. Hoffman says, “The first thing I noticed was improved sleep and anxiety reduction, and then my energy level and libido came back to normal. I feel like I have my life back.” Several clinics in northern Colorado offer BHRT. A quick online search will get you connected to a provider near you.
Game on for health
IF YOU THINK COMPUTER GAMES are for kids, think again...and maybe think better. Called “exergaming” or “gamercising,” many research studies show that computer games that require players to hear and process game demands, then physically move in response to them seem to help stave off or slow progression of cognitive decline and neurological diseases, like Alzheimer’s. They also
can improve physical coordination and reaction times. Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience states that, “Exergaming has the potential to increase exercise adherence, balance confidence, and exercise enjoyment,” too. So, join your kids or grandkids the next time they turn on their Nintendo®, Xbox or PlayStationTM and fire up an active game...or buy your own, just for the health of it.

Can You Hear Me Now? Have you heard? You can get over the counter, inexpensive hearing aids. All you have to do is fill out an easy form and pay a small shipping and handling fee and within 2-4 weeks you will receive your new devices. I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of questions, so I did some research and here is what I found. Prescriptive devices (purchased locally from a hearing healthcare professional) • Set to your hearing prescription • Complete diagnostic evaluation • Includes options to improve any cognitive issues • Customized fitting for your unique ear shape • In person initial, follow-up and on-going care • Up to 3-year full coverage warranty • Tinnitus treatment • Bluetooth
Over the counter devices (purchased online) • Mild to moderate hearing loss only • No audiogram (hearing test) is required • N/A • Minimal generic preset fitting options • Telephone care varies by company • Option to purchase warranty • N/A • N/A Another aspect to consider is the financial investment. Remember you will have devices in your life for many years. If you decide to purchase your devices from a local hearing healthcare professional the cost will cover the devices, trial period, warranty, and in-person follow-up/service for the life of the devices. During the trial, you will be allowed to use them to get a
clear understanding of what they can deliver for you. You will record your perceptions so the professional can make changes that are needed. A trial period gives you the opportunity to decide if hearing devices are for you. Addressing your hearing loss is an important decision to make and will have a positive impact on your life for years. Hopefully this information can help you decide which route is best for you.

What’s New in Gardening: 2019 There’s nothing new under the sun, or so the saying goes, but if you dig deep enough you’ll always find something surprising and fun. With that in mind, 2019 may not bring about any massively revolutionary new ideas to the age-old practice of gardening, but there are still some pretty exciting things to talk about!
LED Grow Lights While LED grow lights have been around for a few years, prices are finally falling to the point where they make sense to use at home, not just in commercial growing operations. With LED bulbs that can fit into regular light fixtures, these extremely efficient bulbs can serve as standalone lighting or can be used help provide extra light for indoor houseplants that might otherwise suffer in poorly-lit rooms, and at a fraction of the energy consumption of traditional incandescent or compact fluorescent grow lights. They are available in different colors: red to promote blooming or red and blue together to promote foliar growth.
Wild Woolies® Felt Birdhouses These sustainable felt birdhouses are made of sustainably harvested, naturally water repellent wool with eco-friendly dyes. Surface moisture from dew, rain or snow quickly dries in the open air. Wool is also naturally dirt and mold resistant. The opening can be enlarged to the right size for your preferred avian guests. Handcrafted by Fair Trade workers in Nepal, these birdhouses come stuffed with recycled newspaper from Kathmandu so you can catch up on the latest from Nepal - just remove the paper when you’re ready to hang the birdhouse up. These fun, colorful, and sustainable birdhouses are designed to make everyone happy - birds and people alike!
Seed Mixes from Territorial Seeds Although seed mixes are nothing new, Territorial Seed Company has raised the bar in 2019, introducing a tremendous variety of new mixes designed to make gardening fun and easy. Blends include the more traditional, such as Hummingbird Mix and Shade Mix, as well as more niche options like Western Xeriscape Mix and Beneficial Bug Mix. These seed mixes are sure to provide variety and beauty to your landscape, and thanks to Territorial Seed Co.’s commitment to biodynamic and organic seed production, you can trust that whatever blend you choose was produced in the most eco-friendly way possible.

Virtual villains How to stay safe in a techno world Kyle Moyer
THE WORLD IS CHANGING FAST. From the way families and friends stay connected to the way people receive mail, bank, pay bills, and get their news—it’s all constantly changing and becoming more and more virtual. Most of the time, due to built-in protections, technology is relatively secure, but there are bad actors out there who are innovating in real time to take advantage of unsuspecting people, who unfortunately often are older and less technologically savvy. According to the U.S. Census, by 2030 20 percent of the U.S. population 24 |
Fifty&Better
will be over the age of 65. This is a marked rise considering that only about 10 years ago in 2010, 13 percent of the population was 65-plus. With this rapid shift in age demographics, criminal enterprises that have traditionally targeted aging populations have a much larger pool to attack, so it’s important to know how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of scams and fraud. Safety can be taxing As it is tax season, it would be remiss not to discuss scammers who take
advantage of the “credibility” of the IRS to prey on trusting citizens. The first thing to know is that the IRS does not contact taxpayers requesting personal or financial information—ever. On its website, the IRS emphasizes that it “doesn’t initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. This includes requests for PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.”
Frauds and scams up-to-date info When you want to find out about current frauds and scams, check out these websites. LARIMER COUNTY www.larimer.org/sheriff/services/information/ frauds -scams WELD COUNTY www.weldda.com/news_room/fraud_alerts FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION, CONSUMER INFORMATION—SCAMS www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/scam-alerts AARP, SCAMS & FRAUD www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/?intcmp=GLBNAV -SL-MON-CONP
Even so, a common tax scam includes telephone calls where someone claims to be with the IRS and requests “verification” of information on record. If you give information to an unknown caller, they can use it to steal your identity, and gain access to much more personal and financial information. A twist on the phone call scam is when the caller masks their phone number and claims you owe unpaid taxes, even threatening jail time if you don’t respond. Phone companies try to filter these calls; they may show up as
“Scam Likely” on your caller I.D. The best practice is to not answer calls from numbers you don’t recognize. If callers are legitimate, they will leave a message, but even then, be careful about returning calls to anyone claiming to be with the IRS. Another tax scam you might encounter includes dealing with a “ghost” tax return preparer, someone “who is paid to prepare a tax return, but does not sign it, either electronically or on paper, as the paid preparer. These phantom preparers who won’t put their name on the tax return are a warning
sign for taxpayers of a potential scam,” states the IRS. Friendly fraud Are you on Facebook? If so, you’re one of 2.3 billion people who are. Facebook is a wonderful way to keep in touch with friends and family, but it has its dark side. If you’ve been keeping up with the news lately you know the company has been embroiled in several high-profile data scandals. Whether it’s Facebook or another social media platform, know that
Fifty&Better | 25
they all use information provided by participants to craft algorithms that tailor users’ experiences to sell ad space. To keep you and your data safe, follow safety procedures when using social media of any kind. First and foremost, don’t over share. Keep personal information, well, personal. Know that anything you say on social media and any photos you post can live on in digital eternity even if you delete an account. Also, be very wary of friend requests. If you’re asked to connect with someone, ask yourself: “Do I know this person and do I want him or her to know more about me?” If either answer is “no,” ignore
26 |
Fifty&Better
and delete the request. Sometimes when you receive a friend request you might ask: “Aren’t I friends with this person already?” In the Facebook world, this question often indicates one of your friend’s accounts has been hacked and a duplicate, false account has been created. If you accept friend requests from fake accounts, you can provide a channel for your account to be infected as well. Again, delete the request. Risky romance Online dating sites and apps are other places where people get scammed and they’re one of the last where you want it to happen. After all, you’re putting
yourself out there to find love or romance, not to be taken advantage of. When looking for a partner online, be suspicious if someone looks too good to be true, because they probably are. Oftentimes scammers will use photos of people who are or look like models to lure in their prey. Also, be very careful if someone wants to communicate on a platform other than the one provided by the dating site. Vetted sites and apps have their own messaging services for a reason—safety. The bottom line? Staying safe in a technologically advancing world requires diligence, common sense and trusting your gut.

Gardening 101
Soil, sun, and size
Katie Harris
GARDENING CAN BE a rewarding hobby, bringing fresh, healthy produce to the kitchen table, and even helping you save money on groceries. However, for many of us the dry Colorado climate, difficult soil conditions, and general lack of a green thumb make gardening feel like a chore. Tara L. Parr, a volunteer with Fort Collins-based Home Grown Food, spends what little time she has away from her personal garden out in the community, offering advice and assistance to locals who are interested in gardening but don’t know where to start. “Our goal is to promote ecological gardening in the community,” says Parr. “We do this by connecting people with resources that will help them grow food while creating a better place to live.” According to Parr, all it takes is one pot to transform yourself into a gardener. “Anyone can take a pot and plant a seed in it,” she says. “If it’s a tomato plant you set it somewhere in the sun, and if it’s greens you might put it in the shade. The trick is not to think too big too quickly.” Parr suggests moving up to a small plot, no bigger than 2’x3’ after an initial potting season. To achieve the best results she recommends digging the plot
into the ground. “A raised bed is a lot of work, and not necessarily a good idea in such a dry climate,” she says. “Having your garden sunken into the ground a bit helps it hold moisture and protects plants from wind.” Parr says keeping the plot small enough that you can work the whole thing from one place, without repeatedly getting up and moving around is the key to avoiding back pain when working with a sunken bed. She also recommends stretching before getting started, and exercising regularly to prepare the body for the task at hand. The body’s not the only thing that needs a little advanced preparation. Giving the ground a little TLC before planting is one of the most important steps to a successful growing season. “The key to growing in the ground is really working the soil,” says Parr. “Everything likes to have a good place to grow, so you’ll have the best luck by finding a piece of land with decent soil and then digging in deep.” Compost, which can be
created at home by digging a hole, throwing in your kitchen scraps, and stirring regularly, should be added to a garden plot to achieve optimum growing conditions. In addition to achieving a quality soil mix, digging up and eliminating weeds is an important step to take before planting, and is easily performed while working the soil in early spring. However, Parr says the existence of weeds throughout the garden season is less of a problem than people think. “I’ll pull a weed here and there when I’m out working with a plant, but I don’t

get very particular about it,” she says. “No matter how many you pull, weeds always come back. Spending a lot of extra time worrying about them is useless.” Parr says using healthy soil and a thick coating of dry leaves around plants is generally enough to combat the problem. Some weeds, such as dandelion could be put to good use—as salad ingredients. When starting out, it’s wise to select plants that are fairly immune to the challenges our climate presents. “Radishes, lettuce and spinach are really easy to grow and so good for you,” says Parr. “They help you realize that what you’re doing isn’t that hard, plus they are great choices to pick and eat straight from the garden.” Basil, onions, leeks, squash and zucchini also made Parr’s list of easy-to-grow veggies. She says cauliflower, broccoli, eggplant, tomatoes and peppers were best left to more experienced gardeners. Another route for novices to consider is planting a fruit tree. “Besides providing years of enjoyment, trees have other advantages as well,” says Parr. “While there is a lot of work involved with caring for a tree, you don’t face the bending over and digging that you do with a garden.” Whatever path you take, the most important thing is to have patience and enjoy the process. “A lot of times we get so focused on wanting things to grow that we become obsessed,” says Parr. “Things don’t always work out the way we want them to; whether you forget to water or the ground gets hit by hail, you have to keep in mind that the ground is resilient and be prepared to try again next year.” Parr and the team of volunteers at Home Grown Food are happy to visit aspiring gardeners at home and welcome visitors to their gardens, to discuss ideas and strategies for making them happen. More information on requesting visits, and on upcoming events is available at www.homegrownfoodcolorado.org. “Gardening is meditative; it’s healing and it’s good for your psyche,” says Parr. “The process of watching things grow, and knowing they have the possibility to become food is a reward in itself.” 30 |

CATHY HETTLEMAN HAS A PASSION for helping people and riding bicycles. Throughout her career as a parent educator and special education teacher in the Poudre School District, she commuted to work every day by bike (15 miles roundtrip). Now as a retiree who volunteers throughout the community, she’s still serving others and pedaling—living her passions every day. Hettleman sorts gently used, donated clothing at the Kid’s Closet, an outreach ministry of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins where families can get clothes for their children at no charge. She teaches a parenting class at The Family Center/La Familia. She works at fundraising events to support the Food Bank for
Larimer County. And she shares her love of cycling as a Bicycle Ambassador. Hettleman explains that she is one of five liaisons who work with residents on the northwest side of town as part of the FC Bikes Big Jump Project. She helps the city address barriers to bicycling, including educating people about how to ride safely and confidently, and showing them low-traffic routes to get where they want to go. “We host bicycle rodeos for neighborhood children, hand out bike lights and educational information, lead rides to showcase safe routes and team with mobile bike repair businesses to get peoples’ bikes in good operating condition,” she says. One of Hettleman’s favorite experiences as a Bicycle Ambassador was when she taught a “learn-to-ride” class for women. “One of my former students—who I always encouraged to try bicycling—was in the class. She learned to ride a bike during the class, and now uses her bicycle to commute and run errands. It changed her life!” “Cathy has made lasting impacts on the community with her work as a Bicycle Ambassador,” says Jamie Gaskill, FC Bikes program specialist. “From her days at Fort Collins High School where she led the creation of groundbreaking bicycling initiatives to her work today as an Ambassador who engages with neighborhoods to get more people on bikes, she’s a leader in every sense of the word.” Hettleman says that everyone has something they can do to help others and there are so many ways to help in our community. She recommends contacting a local United Way or a local church as both connect volunteers to people who need help. “The most important thing is to respond to opportunities that call to you. Do something that you like.”

Better Balance

Taking time to listen
Set aside the distractions and be fully present TAKING TIME TO LISTEN…to the one in front of us, to what rests deep within, to nature’s story. Taking time to listen may just be ‘life’ itself, may be the way we are most alive. Last week, rolling the trash can to the end of the drive for its weekly pickup, I met John, my neighbor. We run into each other from time to time, usually when one is out for a walk, or we chance to meet at the irrigation ditch to check the status of water flow in summer months. We always stop and listen to what the other has to say. These are the only times over many years we connect, but we ‘know’ each other and appreciate the friendship. We have taken the time to listen. Listening does not come easy these days, in this culture. Flooded with distractions, information, multiple communication platforms, we are often in a hurry, directed by our ‘to-do’ lists and responsibilities. Even with best intentions to be present, we can get in the way of deep listening—our egos, preparing our responses, those noisy/ worrisome voices within us, our projections, and prejudices. Listening and being fully present is an intentional move on our part. I’ve not seen Lenny for many months. But there were a couple of

years I had the chance to stop and listen to his story. It was usually at the corner of Mountain and College Avenue where he would be sitting on a bench, and as you passed, he might quietly ask if you could spare a quarter. In the winter months he would be bundled up in a heavy coat and worn gloves. With time, there came from him a look of recognition that friends share. I got to ‘know’ some of Lenny’s story and who he was as I listened. Yet it’s most often with those nearest to us, our families, close friends, colleagues, where time is not taken to listen. Familiarity, schedules to keep, ambivalence, nagging conflicts, or thinking we will take time later, all get in the way. It’s a challenge to consider how to change that and be more present with our closest companions in life, how to take the time. But the gifts that come with taking time are many, for both the one listened to and the listener. Providing that listening space for the other to express and be oneself is a gift and is as human as we can be. Good listening can be healing and validating, can open the heart to compassion, even toward those with whom we have differences and dislikes. It’s a chance to know the other in new ways, and learn something
about ourselves. A way to love, to build community. Doors may open. My life-long friend Steve, who lives in Michigan, with whom I speak/ email throughout the year and visit periodically, sent me this Robert Frost poem a couple of weeks ago: A Time to Talk (by Robert Frost 1874-1963) hen a friend calls to me from W the road And slows his horse to a meaning walk, I don’t stand still and look around On all the hills I haven’t hoed, And shout from where I am, “What is it?” No, not as there is a time to talk. I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground, Blade-end up and five feet tall, And plod: I go up to the stone wall For a friendly visit. Perhaps it’s time, especially in this second half of life, to ‘put down our hoe,’ set aside the iPhone and the ‘todo’ list, turn down the music and listen to what is most alive in front of us and within us.
