Volunteer enriches community Harry Love shares his diverse talents LINDA L. OSMUNDSON
EARLY IN HIS COLLEGE DAYS, Harry Love considered teaching in a college or university. But by the time he graduated with a physics degree, he was tired of school and academics. He applied and was hired by a large oilfield service company. After 37 years traversing much of the world for that company, Harry retired 16 years ago with his wife Jody and moved to Loveland.
Once in Loveland, retirement didn’t last long. He became a Master Gardener to learn about high plains plants. His knowledge led to the Loveland Youth Gardeners and resulted in a board position. His career in management lent itself to other volunteer opportunities like the High Plains Arts Council where he again served on the board. Through the Adopt-a-Garden program, Harry volunteered to maintain Loveland’s Benson Park gardens. He and Jody became board members for Friends of the Library.
Harry feels his most rewarding volunteer activity is with VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) and TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly). Under the direction of the Internal Revenue Service, Harry helps low- and moderate-income taxpayers complete their annual tax returns at no cost. Volunteers are not necessarily CPAs. Like Harry, they come from all walks of life. He and other preparers are trained and recertified in tax law every year. They use IRS provided materials, software and standard tests. All prepared returns are tested by an IRS software program for mistakes before submission. Although their tax preparation is not guaranteed like paid preparers, Harry is proud of their 98-percent success rate. Last year, local volunteers in northern Colorado provided 3000 seniors with more than 4000 federal and state returns.
Harry functions as one of several site coordinators for the seven locations in Loveland and Fort Collins. He maintains the websites for both VITA and TCE. He also fills out tax returns in various locations like senior centers, libraries, senior living facilities and in a client’s home. Harry works with a woman now 97 and today prepares taxes for her children.
Harry says, “VITA and TCE operate all year as well as during the tax season. In the off season, we help people with problems such as those from prior tax returns.” Because of his connections to older adults, Harry recently trained to be a Senior Access Points Ambassador. In that capacity, he provides information to seniors who need assistance in other areas.
Harry feels lucky to be involved in Larimer County. We are lucky to have him in the community.

80’s PROM
TO LIVE FULLY AND CONSCIOUSLY on the ‘second half of life journey’ is to be open to what moves us forward in positive, meaningful, compassionate, creative and healthy ways.
As important is honoring what has carried us to this point in life, influenced our path, fed our spirit. Looking back on decades lived, noting what was discovered through relationships, experiences, reading, writing and study—mining these precious resources, is a reminder of what has sustained, empowered, and moved us—and that we have not traveled this path alone.
A common exercise at seminars focusing on the second half of life is the ‘life review’, an exercise designed to reengage with one’s past—revisiting transforming moments, significant personal encounters, insights that influenced self-concept and life decisions, all to help arrive at a deeper understanding of the core thread running through one’s life. After time reflecting within oneself, sharing with another participant helps deepen the experience, and what is found, when told honestly, our stories are more alike than different on this human journey. Distractions of day to day life, pressures of cultural norms, can lull us into forgetting what we already know about ourselves and the gift of breath.
If you have journaled over your life, revisiting those old binders, notebooks and scraps of paper can bring alive precious insights into your personhood and lessons learned about the world now seen through more experienced eyes. Visiting places you or ancestors lived, as well as reliving significant pilgrimages taken over the years, is another way to appreciate the richness of your path and wisdom gained.
This past Christmastime, my brother gifted me a small booklet of favorite quotes and phrases accumulated over the years—lines from spiritual texts, philosophers, historians, as well as from his own writings. I have a deeper appreciation for my brother as well as a new resource for my own growth.
Often I think of books I have read and held on to, those I cannot let go, books I pick up from time to time over the decades, refer back to, even if just seeing titles on the shelf reminding me of a time, a topic, a reference point.
I leave you with a poem written on one of those days when my piles of books and bookcases had my full attention.

Underlines from the past notes written in the margins and the joy of revisiting them, looking to see why then, even now, they speak, shout out: “Pay attention!”, appreciating how they transcend the limits of what I see and touch… in this world with its props and noises. Relationship with the word, the pen and the line that underlines, as if returning to a mountain meadow Where decades ago I pondered the path before me And who I was.
