It is time for a new perspective in Brain Hearing TM The brain’s hearing center is comprised of two subsystems. Two subsystems work together inside the brain to help the brain make sense of sound: the orient subsystem and the focus subsystem. The orient subsystem always comes first. When we hear, it scans all surrounding sounds – no matter their nature or direction – to create a full perspective of the sound scene. It then creates an overview of the sound objects around us. The focus subsystem helps people select which sounds to listen to. Once we have an overview of the sound objects around us, we use the focus subsystem to identify the sound we want to focus on, listen to or switch attention to, while filtering out irrelevant sounds.

May we show up! Life is all about noticing
I ALWAYS LIKE READING Bob Calhoun’s stories and poems. They’re thoughtful and inspiring, grounding and freeing. I appreciate his poem, Invitation, in this issue. One line, in particular, grabbed my attention: May we show up. I’ve found in my personal experience that it is so easy to not show up. I can go for a walk on a beautiful day and return home and remember next to nothing from my walk. But in my head, I did a great job of arguing my point of view on the issue of the day to an imagined adversary, and figuring out what I needed to pick up for dinner, and reviewing a discussion that I had with Kristin, all while not showing up for my walk. Might an eagle have soured down the river? Could crocuses have been pushing up through the light snow? THIS SPRING AND SUMMER bring your indoors out. Decks/patios provide enjoyable havens if you plan early. Dress it up. Anchor conversation and dining areas with outdoor rugs. Choose bold colors for drama; neutral palettes for serenity. Select furniture that best suits your needs and space. Create a reading or resting area; add a hammock, swing or rocking chair. Line storage benches around the perimeter; cover with comfortable cushions. Slipcover unused seasonal pillows in weather resistant fabric. Hang anti-mold drapery. Enhance the space with string lights, candles and lots of plants. To minimize mosquitoes, try these mosquito repelling plants. You may have to crush some leaves for optimal protection. They also have multiple uses. Lavender and scented geraniums repel mosquitoes and flies. Lavender and marigolds also fend off rabbits. Peppermint flavors your beverages; sage, rosemary and basil spice up your recipes. Create a warm, welcoming atmosphere and enjoy your outdoor room.
Spring cleaning FINALLY WE ARE STARTING to see hints of Spring. Maybe its time to tidy the house and yard. Follow these simple tips. • Make a schedule. Set a time to tackle each room or job. • Start with those places missed in routine cleaning–the pantry, closet, junk drawer, and/or refrigerator. Remove outdated items. Declutter. • Work from top to bottom. Use a good vacuum and green cleaners. Refresh drapes in the dryer on air only. Vacuum walls, ceiling fans, window screens, furniture. Dust all surfaces before you mop or vacuum the floors, launder area rugs and shampoo carpets. • Change furnace filter and consider hiring someone to clean air ducts. • Spray patio furniture, decks, lights, clean windows, door tracks and wipe away cobwebs. • Remove dead plants and debris. • Make a garden plan and order or purchase plants and seeds. • Organize the garage. Sell or discard unused tools and supplies. • Sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labors.

You got the Covid-19 vaccine, now what? YOU’VE RECEIVED THE Covid-19 vaccination so it’s time to rip off that mask and get back to normal life, right? Hold on. While you can likely feel less stress about contracting the virus, getting vaccinated is no guarantee that you can’t spread it. Also, vaccines, while effective, are not 100-percent effective. This means you still have to wear a mask and be careful. Besides, if you get too comfortable going about business as usual and your immunity starts wearing off—no one is quite sure how long it will last—you make yourself vulnerable to the virus. With that said, it’s pretty safe to hang out with your vaccinated friends and family—and now with warmer weather you can do so outside again.

Aging gracefully IT’S TOUGH TO GROW OLD, especially when our bodies start giving us some trouble. If given the choice, many of us would turn back the hands of time—at least a little—as we grow old. Who wants to wear bifocals and feel stiffness in the morning? When it comes to your body, there’s real truth to the idea of using it so you don’t lose it. Exercise lowers the stress hormone cortisol and increases the feel good hormone serotonin. When it comes down to it, aging is really a state of mind. If you have a positive attitude and believe you can take action to improve your health, you’ll feel—and act—younger. Make a commitment to moving every day, eating for good health, and exercising your mind with volunteering, games and good conversation. That way, you’ll feel young even as you grow old.
Calming seasonal allergies WHILE WE WELCOME SPRING and warmer weather, some of us do so with a lot of sniffling and sneezing. As trees leaf out they produce pollen, with the biggest culprits being cottonwoods, aspens and poplars. After trees bloom from March to May, grasses rear up during the heat of the summer, with weeds striking in early fall. Calm the itch by running an air conditioner and avoiding window fans and rolled down car windows, which only suck pollen indoors. Also, take a shower at night to rinse away pollen that’s collected on your hair and skin, and undress outside your bedroom to keep allergens away from where you sleep. While it’s tempting to take advantage of our Colorado sun to dry clothes outdoors, try to resist. They’ll only trap pollen in flight. Finally, exercise outdoors during the early morning or early evening, when pollen counts are lower.

Get out and walk— safely
TIRED OF BEING COOPED UP all winter because of weather and Covid? Get out and enjoy Colorado’s fresh air. As little as 10 to 30 minutes a day of exercise is all you need for better health. Northern Colorado offers many hiking/walking trails and neighborhood paths or stroll through your subdivision. Walking alone is a good time to pray, reflect, mentally organize, phone friends/family or just enjoying the scenery. You might even walk with a friend. • Stretch and strengthen at home.

•D ress for weather in layers. • Wear good shoes. • I f walking fast, distance more than 6’ apart. • Wear grade N95 surgical masks, masks made of polypropylene or cotton/propylene blend, 2-layer cotton masks but avoid Gaiters/bandanas for the most protection. •A pproaching other walkers, step off the path and walk single file. • Wash hands before and after walking. •C hange workout clothes quickly.
Overnight trips during Covid VACCINES WILL NOT CHANGE our life yet. If you must travel overnight, consider these tips for staying safely in a hotel. Check their website for online reservation and checkin. Call ahead to voice any concerns. Ask if the hotel requires employees wear masks. Question about social distancing. Do they use updated cleaning and disinfecting procedures, clean often touched items and remove or clean pens, room keys, tables, phones, alarm clock/radios, doorknobs, light switches, vending machines, elevator buttons, remote controls and business center computers/printers? For insured safety, pack your own disinfecting items like sanitizer, spray and wipes. If unsure of the hotel’s methods, clean the above list yourself. Wash your hands often. Wear a mask in all public places. Avoid areas of close contact. Consider taking the stairs rather than an elevator with strangers. Think of staying in an AirBNB rather than a hotel. Staying in a hotel is safe if you practice these simple precautions.
Camping getaway IF YOU WANT A BREAK from home isolation, consider a camping trip. Whether with your family or with friends, check Colorado parks and recreation camping rules at this website: https://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/ CampingRules.aspx Here are a few simple ways to make your camping safe. • Stay close to home. • Families drive in separate cars. • Rules include no more than 10 people per campsite. • Purchase all supplies before you leave. Include singlesized snacks. • Pack hygiene provisions like wipes, sanitizer, disinfectant spray and soap. • Take firewood and trash bags. Some areas require all items brought in must be taken out. • Have each family cook for themselves, or, if a buffet, choose one server to minimize utensil handling. • If campground is crowded, go somewhere else, possibly a remote area. • Pack plenty of drinking water. • Wear a mask and social distance. • Be extra careful in bathrooms and showers. Take these precautions and enjoy Colorado’s outdoors.

Scott Titterington WHEN JIM AND PHYLLIS of Fort Collins opened their first meal-kit box they were pretty excited. They had been given a month subscription as a gift so that they could try it out. And try it out they did. “We have experienced so many new dishes that we would never have done ourselves,” says Phyllis as she lists off the meals they’ve prepared: pad see ew, brown butter tortellini with lemon and baby spinach, orange chicken with snow peas and rice, and on and on. There are lots of choices every week and Phyllis likes to order new things that she hasn’t ever prepared before. Jim has his part, too. “I like to figure out what wine to pair with each meal,” says Jim. “It feels like we’re on the edge of gourmet cooking.” And it gets Jim into the kitchen too. “We kind of tag team,” he says. “Phyllis does most of the cooking. I get the wine and then jump in afterwards
Food assistance
Where do you go when you’re hungry? Or how can you help get food and meals where they’re needed? Larimer and Weld counties offer many programs to help feed those who need it most. These organizations are always looking for volunteers and financial assistance to help with their efforts to fight food insecurity. Food Banks in Larimer and Weld counties offer food and so much more including prepared meals and nutrition information. Other programs deliver food and meals right to the doors of those who need it. Check out the Nutrition section in our Health Directory for a list of programs.
Getting classy
When you want to up your culinary game or just learn some fun new skills, check out the many cooking classes available in the area. Learn to make cheese or pastries or that certain ethnic dish you’ve always wanted to try. Taking a class with a friend or spouse can be a great opportunity for a fun time. Or if you attend alone, you can make new friends. Given COVID-19 restrictions, in-person classes are small and many classes are taught virtually or offer a virtual option. Following is a list of places offering in-person and virtual classes. Check them out and see if there’s something that grabs your attention. • Bottled Olive Pantry in Windsor www.thebottledolivepantry.com • Farm Fusion in the Kitchen www.farmfusion.org • Gardens on Spring Creek www.fcgov.com/gardens/adult-classes/ • The Cooking Studio www.the-cooking-studio.com • The Teaching Kitchen at Ginger and Baker www.gingerandbaker.com/the-teachingkitchen/
and do the cleanup.” Phyllis says she likes that everything needed to prepare the meal comes with it. “So many gourmet ingredients are a one-time thing,” she says, “So I don’t have to go out and buy a whole bottle of teriyaki sauce that I’m never going to get through.” And she says it’s marvelous in COVID. “All the ingredients are there, and we don’t have to go to the grocery store,” Phyllis says. As we find ourselves at home a bit more than we maybe used to be, preparing meals and taking the time to enjoy them can certainly be a silver lining. We might miss eating out at our favorite establishments, but we can up our culinary game right at home. And maybe spend a little more quality time together. LOCAL FLAVOR Some kits are just designed for fun. The
Cooking Studio, www.the-cookingstudio.com, has kits to make chocolates and macaroons that come complete with an instructional video and cute gift boxes for your friends. Check out the NOCO Virtual Farmers Market, www. nocovirtualfarmersmarket.com under Baking Kits for some more fun ideas, such as locally produced, ready-tobake cookie dough from Sara’s Cosmic Cookie Dough or Brownie Mix in a Jar from Star View Farm. Also, check under Prepared Meals to find heat-and-eat meals such as Classic Shepherd’s Pie or Broccoli Cheddar Soup. GROCERY STORE RECIPES You can also stop in at your local grocery store and look for kits that you can assemble at home. You’ll find commercial taco kits, salad kits, meal kits, pizza crusts with sauce. You might even check out things like Hamburger
or Tuna Helper-type packages. Safeway and King Sooper both have extensive online recipe boxes. Once you choose a recipe, you can shop for it right there online, too. Then just drive over and pick it up or they’ll even deliver it. COMMERCIAL MEAL KITS Plenty of companies will send you ingredients and instructions for dinners just like the one Jim and Phyllis use. Sign up for two to six meals per week and have boxes sent to your house. These can be surprisingly economical and save you the planning and shopping steps. “We get two full meals for each designated meal in our kit,” Phyllis says. Search the internet under Meal Delivery Service or Meal Kits to see which options fit your tastes. You can find everything from gourmet programs to basic cuisine or choose menus for special dietary needs.

Colorado moved into the “Safer At Home” phase of reopening on April 27th and, as of this writing, that order expires on May 26th, 2020. The next planned phase is titled “Protect Our Neighbors” and is focused on a more normal social life, while still being protective against the spread of Covid-19. What does all of this mean though? Who is still at risk? What does the future look like? First off, we need to understand that these orders and timelines are a general guide and are flexible. If new case numbers begin to rise, we can go back to “Safer At Home” or even “Stay At Home” orders. We have to be ready to make adjustments to our lives as are necessary. We also need to be realistic with what our near future looks like with this pandemic. In reality, we are looking at many more months of precautions. Even with our modest control measures currently in place the medical community is expecting a peak for the pandemic to be around July. Then, its expected that we will continue to see cyclical periods of new cases for the next 12 to 18 months, until we can mass produce an effective and safe vaccine. It is unlikely that we will ever be able to eliminate this virus completely. We may see
small resurgences each fall and winter. We should be ready and willing to have plans for business closures as new waves can be identified. Our most vulnerable populations, those over 65 and people with chronic lung conditions, heart disease, or who are immunocompromised, need to adhere to more strict precautions and should try to practice “Stay At Home” as much as possible. The best way back to normal life is to have readily available testing for anyone who has symptoms or exposures and to be able to isolate and contact trace any positive cases. With many people being asymptomatic or even contagious prior to symptoms, we should expect waves of infections throughout the population. Our lives have been changed due to Covid-19 and the next year or two is going to be vastly different than what we are used to. However, together we will return to normal life. Please do your part in looking out for each other and our communities by following our guidelines for “Safer At Home” and “Protect Our Neighbors”. As a primary care physician, I can truly say that we here for you and we thank you for your resolve during these unique times.

It’s time for the new perspective in BrainHearing™. Supporting the brain in how it makes sense of sound has always been Susan’s vision and treatment plan for her patients. She believes that Oticon has a vision that is at the forefront of hearing care and will turn the new perspective in BrainHearing into a reality. A hearing problem can become brain problems. Downgrading sound input to the brain and failing to treat the hearing loss in the correct way can have a variety of consequences.** • Increased listening effort With less sound information, it is harder for the brain to recognize sounds. It must fill in the gaps, which requires more listening effort. • Increased mental load Having to guess what people are saying and what is happening increases the mental load on the brain and leaves less mental capacity for remembering and performing. Reorganized brain functionality Without enough stimulation in the
hearing center, the visual center and other senses start to compensate, which changes the function of the brain. • Accelerated cognitive decline Increased mental load, lack of stimulation and reorganized brain functionality is linked to accelerated cognitive decline, which affects the ability to remember, learn, concentrate, and make decisions. • Accelerated brain volume shrinkage All human brains reduce in size with age, but the shrinkage process accelerates when the brain must work against the natural way it processes sound. And so, the brain problems can turn into life problems. A limited sound scene without access to the right input can lead to serious problems in life.*** • Social isolation and depression People with untreated hearing loss can end up avoiding social gatherings because they are unable to cope with complex sound environments. • Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
The risk for dementia increases fivefold for severe-to-profound hearing loss, three-fold for moderate hearing loss and two-fold for mild hearing loss. • Poor balance and fall-related injuries Untreated hearing loss can affect balance, increasing the risk of fallrelated injuries three-fold. Susan is excited to share information regarding BrainHearing™ with you. Susan Baker is the owner and operator of Advanced Hearing Services in Fort Collins. She has been helping people with hearing loss and Tinnitus for the past 21 years. Please call (970) 2215249 for an appointment today.

Better Living
Bob Calhoun
Deeply Rooted With age comes wisdom
TREES, OUR QUIET companions in life, often help us view life with more clarity, providing perspective on this ‘second half of life’ path we travel... if we will take the time to look, listen and imagine. A gravel county road north of my home has been my favorite running, jogging, and now walking path over the past 35 years... a route offering awesome views of the foothills and distant mountain peaks, passing pasture lands, old farm houses, barns, and newer estate homes...and very little vehicle traffic. Scattered about, especially along old irrigation canals and ditches, stand trees of various shapes and sizes. Most eye-catching are the towering cottonwood. Two of these old cottonwood trees growing side by side along the route caught my attention this past year, ones I have traveled by for decades... yet noticed as if for the first time. During the previous winter months, my eyes drawn to their weathered gray trunk and branches, I saw clearly how both had lost the upper halves of their trunks as well as their largest branches, now modeling only smaller, newer branches reaching outward

from the shortened main trunks. As summer emerged, I saw something much different...a thick deep green canopy, offering expansive shade and a song as leaves fluttered in the breeze. Could these be the same comrades I passed last winter? How might these images speak to those of us who have been blessed to live into the second half of life. What might it say about how we can live, what we can offer into our later years when we have given up, or eventually will give up, some degree of our younger vigor and strength... even literally having lost physical parts of ourselves? These old cottonwoods suggest our very nature does not change. We may continue to offer our gifts to others, our community and the world. Maybe not as towering or as intense, but we can still express, still spring to life with ‘deep green leaves’ up to the end of our days. And when we focus on the ‘life giving leaves’ that still contribute to the health of the air we breathe, the hearts of those with whom we come in contact, the ‘missing branches’ and the ‘half trunks’ become not the main focus. Roots still run deep. Wisdom continues to grow.
Invitation Bob Calhoun Life is short. We each have yet little time; yet time is what we have, ferrying us to this very moment, with an invitation to come inside and receive the gift. May we show up and accept time’s bidding, tending to one another as we enter, encouraging each other to ride the crest of the wave before it breaks, embrace the warmth of sunlight as it bathes us, allowing not the setting sun to dip without notice, night’s first star to shine without welcome.
