From the Publisher

You’re not dead yet Time to get active and try something new

I’VE BEEN HITTING THE GYM A BIT lately, the climbing gym that is. It’s like a playground where people scale walls big and small. Nothing seems more natural. It’s like being a kid again. One of my regular climbing partners is Clay. Let’s just say that our ages added together are just shy of 120 years. And we’re not the oldest climbers there by far. In fact, when we go early in the morning, there might be more gray hair than not. The other thing is that it’s very comfortable and friendly at the gym. Folks say hi and ask us to join them. And then there’s the chit-chat about families or work or what projects we have going. And of course there’s some story telling about previous climbs and some discussion about the new routes at the gym this day. Owner, John Lachelt (cover model), fosters an inclusive, social environment that makes it comfortable and fun to be there. I thank him for creating a space where people can become not just more physically fit but also tap that social need we seem to have. Turns out that our mental, physical and spiritual health are all interconnected. Want to reduce stress? Go for a bike ride. Take a walk. Meditate. Do downward facing dog. Or, maybe, go dancing! In her feature story, Lisa Boesen encourages you to find a type of dancing that appeals to you and go do it. “But I never learned to dance!” you say. “Well, you’re not dead yet,” I’d reply. “So, get out there, learn something new and swing, shake and jive. Turns out that learning something new is good for your body, mind and spirit too. Especially if it includes moving around and interacting with people. Dancing sounds like the perfect activity. And on a similar note, in her feature story, Kim Sharpe (Clay’s wife, actually) advocates that you get moving, one way or another, and she gives you lots of choices that are perfect fits for northern Colorado. She starts off with walking and biking and then jumps into golfing, tennis and pickleball. “I thought pickleball looked fun,” you say, “but I never learned how to play.” “Well, you’re not dead yet,” I’d reply. “So, get out there…” “Golfing always seemed like a great way to spend a day outside,” you say, “but I never learned how to golf.” “Well, you’re not dead yet,” I’d reply. “So…” Clay and I are having a fun time. We seem to end up climbing with others, young and old, which also adds a nice element. We were up at the local crag on a sunny day in mid-February and some college kids were climbing near us. We chatted and swapped ropes so we could all try different climbs. Our new friend Brian was climbing there too with his wife and teenage daughter. After we coiled ropes, Clay, Brian and I sat in the winter sun at the top of crag where we chatted and enjoyed a beverage. It was just right. Cheers to staying active, meeting people and learning something new! Scott

Get garden ready!

GET A START on lawn and gardens in spring. If you created a garden journal last year, follow it, or use these general guidelines to glean best times to accomplish early jobs. If you want to change things around and need some inspiration, check out some of the many nurseries in the area. Pick sunny March days to check/clean all equipment, clear winter debris, mark lawn bare spots and start flower/vegetable seeds indoors. In April, ground permitting, divide perennials, bulbs and tubers. Plant frost-hardy vegetables like beets, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, peas, spinach, radishes and carrots. Overseed bare spots. Prune trees and shrubs before sprouts appear. May is the time to plant new perennials, cold-hardy annuals, some trees and shrubs. Remove bulb blossoms. Add new mulch. Dethatch/aerate/ fertilize lawn. Plant summer blooming bulbs such as dahlias/gladiolus. Some experts suggest waiting until after May 5th to activate sprinkler systems and after Mother’s Day or June 1st to plant vegetable/flower seeds or planters. Start your lawn/garden care early, then, sit back and enjoy a beautiful summer bounty. 10 |

Repurpose rather than discard INSTEAD OF THROWING AWAY, consider repurposing. Here are some simple suggestions: • Six-pack beverage cartons become picnic condiment, napkin and utensil servers. • Divided liquor boxes turned on the side convert to cubbies for winter gloves, scarves, stocking caps and earmuffs in coat closets. • Egg cartons separate rings, earrings and small necklaces in jewelry or craft drawers. • Tie racks hold necklaces, belts or scarves. • Tissue boxes wrapped in colorful paper serve as files for office/craft supplies, recipes and seasoning packets. • Shower curtains adapt as drop cloths, picnic tablecloths and covers for windshields to protect from frost. • Cut up t-shirts turn into patchwork quilts, pillows and cleaning cloths. • Odd socks make good, washable dust rags. • Out-grown rain boots render decorative planters. • Toilet paper rolls enrich compost, or, cut into small rolls and decorated serve as napkin holders. Search the internet for more repurposing ideas.

Brighten up for spring SPRING IS AN EXCUSE TO freshen and brighten your living room, kitchen, dining room, bedroom, office and bathrooms. Include seasonal garden centerpieces, real or fake, in cheery spring colors, such as pink, yellow, lavender and/or light blue. Replace pillow shams and bedspreads with florals and pastels. Nothing says spring more than fresh flowers. Watch for sales on grocery store arrangements. Consider bouquets of tulips or daffodils. Fill a bowl with fresh fruit such as lemons or oranges. Use flower or light-colored tablecloths, napkins, table runners and/or placemats. Paint flower pots bright colors. Change a door wreath to reflect the season. Add a colorful front door welcome mat. Replace heavy window coverings with sheers. To bookshelves, add greenery accents, yellow candles and/ or flowers. Decorate furniture with colorful pillows and blanket throws. Do a mantle make-over. Think flowers/ greenery and colorful landscape paintings. Enhance kitchen cabinet top décor with summer garland and string lights.

WHEN THE GRAY DAYS OF WINTER PASS to a fresh new spring we often fantasize about the bounty of food to harvest from the garden. If you haven’t been gifted with a green thumb but crave the nutrient-dense punch of local produce, then Community Supported Agriculture(CSA) might be right for you. A CSA is an arrangement where local food producers create shares on a (usually) weekly basis throughout the growing season. These shares are a sampling of the produce or products that were harvested that week. At the beginning of the year farmers and producers offer these shares up for purchase and they go fast! Not limited to just fruit and vegetables, some CSAs offer meat, eggs, bread and even flowers in their weekly shares. To find your perfect CSA match and ring in the spring, visit: www.localharvest.org/fort-collins-co/csa.

Mind your head AS WE AGE, our bodies change and the same is true of our minds. Emotional regulation, word recall and thought processing speed can take on a different rhythm from what we may have become accustomed to. Daily stress as well as the stress created by our “new normal,” contribute to these. The good news is that small habits of mindfulness and movement can have a positive impact on our stress levels and long-term health. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a secular combination of meditation and movement that is popular with active adults. It is often taught as an 8-week course to build mental and physical health. In a 2019 Washington University study, MBSR was found to increase awareness and self-reflection as well as foster a more selfaccepting attitude. Participants reported improved self-care habits and better familial and social relationships. Learn Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction online from expert Jon Kabat-Zinn with a masterclass subscription (https://bit.ly/3516h9K) or explore an MBSR retreat at the Shambhala Mountain Center (www.shambhalamountain.org) in Red Feather Lakes.

Feeling fit with Fido FINDING TIME THESE DAYS to stay fit can be “ruff.” Fortunately, having a pet in your home provides health and fitness benefits that you might not immediately think of. A pet’s need for play and exercise is great motivation for their human caregivers to become more active. A study published in the BMC Public Health Journal reported that people with a dog walk—on average—22 minutes longer each day than those without. Caring for an animal is also linked with health benefits such as decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The healing benefits of companion animals are often used in hospitals, rehabilitation programs and even memory-care programs. Companionship provided by a dog or cat helps to keep depression, loneliness and isolation in check. A pet also serves as a way to create and maintain social bonds among people. Dog-walking groups or online “cat chat” groups keep people connected and provide them with a community of fellow animal fans. With plenty of animals in shelters and rescues, now might be the purrfect time to adopt a cat or dog.

Have stamp, will travel

WE’VE ALL HEARD OF STAYCATIONS, visiting local sights and enjoying what your city or state has to offer, but what if there was a secret world to discover in your own town? For the cost of a rubber stamp and a book of blank pages you can join the community of Letterboxers and discover a new spin on some of your old haunts. Letterboxing is an activity where people leave weatherproof containers with specialized rubber stamps and a guestbook for others to find using clues. The hidden “letterboxes” must be on property that is publicly accessible but hidden to avoid detection. When found, letterboxers stamp the guestbook in the letterbox and use the stamps in the letterbox to stamp their own pages, recording their “find.” There is a worldwide community around the activity and culture of letterboxing. You can find letterboxes in your neighborhood, while on vacation, and all around the world by visiting www.letterboxing.org/.

BELLEVUE, COLORADO IS HOME to a rare school that allows folks to combine their creativity with their ability to think on (and about) their feet. The Colorado Shoe School opened in 2018 and has been connecting people to the art of shoe-making ever since. With an emphasis on diverting waste from landfills, students make footwear from reclaimed leather, fabric, and even vinyl from former billboards. Founders Annabelle Reader and Dan Huling offer workshops that span an evening for making sandals, a day for sneakers, and two- and five-day workshops for more detailed boot and shoe making. Class size is small so that each student receives instruction on cutting, sewing, tinting and stitching their new “kicks” together. With an emphasis on whimsy and expression, each pair of shoes that comes out of the school is unique to their creator. To learn more about the Colorado Shoe School and to view upcoming workshops visit: https://coloradoshoeschool.com/.

Join the pod people IF YOU’VE HEARD OF PODCASTS but haven’t explored them, now is a great time to dive in. The golden age of radio provided weekly stories, variety shows, noir detective dramas and more to listeners every week. Podcasts can be seen as the great-great-great-grandkids of these productions with a bit of a modern twist. Podcasts are accessed through an app on your smartphone or, if they have one, the individual show’s website. The app you use to access a podcast can be dependent on your type of phone, but all of them offer the same functions whether you use the Apple Podcast app, the Google Music app or something else. There are approximately 4 million podcasts in existence today so navigating the offerings can be a bit overwhelming. Each app on your phone will have a search function, which is a great way to begin. Podcast subject matter can be as diverse as how to start home brewing to unsolved crimes to weekly episodes of NPR’s quiz show “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell me.” Explore even your most specific interests in the podcasting world. Want to listen to radio dramas from the 1940s? You’d be surprised, because there is probably a podcast for that!

IT’S SPRING, WHICH SIGNALS it’s time to emerge from hibernation. Between Covid-19 and cold winter months, some of us have been cooped up indoors far too long. As the weather warms up, warm up to getting outside and moving, keeping it simple and fun. Here are some ideas to get you going.

Walk, bike, golf, pick up a racket...

Find your fitness in NoCo Local parks, trails, courses, courts and fun!

WALK ABOUT

Walking is one of the easiest ways to be active and northern Colorado has so many open spaces and trails to enjoy. FC Moves (a City of Fort Collins department that promotes active transportation) says, “Walking for 30 minutes a day or more on most days of the week is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health.” Walk with a friend to enjoy some dynamic social time. Walk your dog or your neighbor’s dog. Walk after dinner to aid your digestion and improve your sleep. Walk around the block when you go for the mail. Walk to work or to do your errands. If you want to kick it up a notch, intermix walking with jogging or running. Research reported in ScienceDaily.com shows that “varying walking speeds can burn up to 20 percent more calories compared to maintaining a steady pace.”

ROLL OUT

If you haven’t checked out NoCo by bike, get rolling. A world-class bicycling mecca and model for other communities across the nation and globe, northern Colorado offers more than 4,000 miles of multi-use trails and designated bicycle routes and lanes on streets. Bicycling is a great way to boost your physical and mental health, and it “… has significant ‘green’ outcomes as well. The primary environmental benefits associated with biking are related to the shift in travel mode away from automobiles, with potential benefits of reduced pollution, traffic, congestion and improved air quality, resulting

in a more sustainable environment,” according to the American College of Sports Medicine. If you don’t have a bike, you can still take a “Spin” in Fort Collins. Spin is the name of the city’s bike sharing program. Users simply download the Spin app onto their smartphone to pay for, and to begin and end their rides. People without smartphones can use Spin bikes, too. Learn more at www.fcgov.com/ fcmoves/spin.

JUST FORE FUN

The game of golf dates back to the 1700s where it was first played on the eastern shores of Scotland. If you ditch the electric cart, swinging your way around nine or 18 holes averages about three to seven miles of walking, depending on how far you wander around looking for your ball. NoCo has many municipal golf courses for players of all skill levels to enjoy. Most courses offer reduced rates if you play late in the day during “twilight” hours, making it a wee more affordable than playing during peak hours. Disc golf is much like traditional golf except that rather than using clubs and balls, it’s played with a disc or Frisbee®. There’s a tee (starting spot) and the target is a “pole hole”—a chain basket attached to the top of about a five-foot pole. “Disc golf provides upper and lower body conditioning, aerobic exercise, and mental stimulation. Concentration skills increase by mastering shots and negotiating obstacles, and players of limited fitness levels can start slowly and gradually increase their level of play,” says

the Professional Disc Golf Association. Many city parks, public schools and universities have disc golf courses that are free for anyone to use. Find an extensive list of NoCo courses at www.nocodiscgolf.com, a local website about all things disc golf.

GET IN THE SWING OF THINGS

Tennis has been a favorite sport since the mid-1800s. According to TennisCreative.com, “approximately 87 million people play tennis around the world.” The game offers myriad health benefits, such as increasing stamina, hand-eye coordination and strength. The US Tennis Association says that “playing tennis just three hours per week can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease by 56 percent [and] one long-term study shows, tennis players add 9.7 years to their life over sedentary individuals.” Another popular swinging game is pickleball. Created back in the 1960s by three dads whose kids were bored with typical summer activities, pickleball is “one of the fastest growing sports in America,” according to the USA Pickleball Association (learn more at www.usapickleball.org). The game combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Like tennis, pickleball is played on a court, but the court is smaller. Unlike tennis where players use a racket and a felt-covered rubber ball, picklers use a paddle to hit a plastic ball with holes. Tennis and pickleball courts can be found in city parks and recreation centers throughout NoCo.

Learn how to dance

NoCo Places and Instructors

WANT TO GET MOVING? Are you feeling some jive, swing and sway? From glam-up to casual and ballroom to blues, there is dancing for every taste, interest, and skill level in northern Colorado. Dancing is not only a super social activity, it also positively impacts the brain-aging process. Our brain needs exercise just like our body. Research indicates that the complex (but not impossible!) movements, execution and memory strengthens and builds new neuronal connections. Specifically, learning something new out of the comfort zone, (like playing the piano, painting, and dancing), challenges our brain and boosts our cognitive function as we age. Ready to get that body and brain moving? Let’s go!

HOW TO GET STARTED

First, think about the types of dancing you want to learn or music you enjoy. Northern Colorado offers many options including dancing to

large Big Band sounds like Colorado Swing and the Don Elwood Band, local blues favorites such as the Delta Sonics, to live Latin sounds of the Salsa Forte Latin Collective. Other great options include traditional, square, round, and polka dancing, Argentine Tango, and East and West Coast Swing. Some dance moves are easier, some are more difficult.

CONSIDER DANCE LESSONS

Whether you lead or follow, structured dance lessons will help you become more confident as a dancer. You may choose either individual or group lessons. Individual lessons may provide you more 1:1 time with the instructor but may be a bit more expensive. Group lessons are less expensive and offer the valuable opportunity to dance with different people. “To be a good multi-partner dancer, learn how to move on your own partnerless at first. I don’t mean learn 100s of patterns, but instead learn the six multidirectional movements that

WHAT “GEAR” DO I NEED?

skills learned. We are friendly to all levels of dancers!” Most socials encourage switching partners but do not make it mandatory.

Most “gear” is the desire to dance and a bit of courage. Some types of dances do require specific shoes, such as ballroom dance shoes that have suede soles to make execution of the moves, especially turning, much easier. Talk to your instructor about options.

WHERE CAN I DANCE? From formal to casual, there is a place to dance in northern Colorado (see sidebar). Follow businesses, dance groups, social media platforms like Meetup, and bands to stay updated on local dance events.

DO I NEED A ROUTINE PARTNER?

DO I HAVE TO BE MUSICAL TO DANCE?

Most venues, social and instructional groups guide those without a partner to dance with others. Many events offer beginner lessons at every social. “You aren’t alone!” says Laura Buser, one of the salsa-bachata instructors for FoCoCo Events. “Our socials cater to people who have the will and want to learn. We always review the basics and steps, the differences between salsa and bachata, and encourage dancers to practice the

No. Being musical can help but understanding things like tempo and down beats are what are taught in a good beginner dancing lesson. “Movement + Music = Dance,” shares Laura Buser. What is important, per Buser, is the personal connection with music rather than nailing the steps. Anyone can learn it! Break down the content and material to learnable steps.

Buser also suggests recording a video of the lesson, take it home and drill it. “Lastly, when you get up on the floor let the music move you while you pay absolute attention to the one you are with for the next few minutes. Help each other shine!” says Chris Casson. Dancing, like food, brings people and communities together. Finally, it is also a great way to connect with your community across the socio-economic strata and dance with all generations. “There is something magical about dancing with different age groups. It gives us life,” says Buser. So, shall we dance?

Why is hearing loss associated with Dementia? D

amage to your ears and your brain doesn’t always start off related. But over time, something as simple as hearing loss can become a significant risk factor for cognitive decline, including dementia. The brain is affected by untreated hearing loss and can often cascade into a series of other cognition or health-related issues. What Is Dementia and What Causes It? Dementia is a general term for mental decline severe enough to interfere with your daily life. The symptom that most often springs to mind is memory loss– but it’s not the only issue associated with dementia (which can also include changes in personality or severe mood swings). The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which is a very specific decline in the memory and thinking centers of the brain. The exact causes of dementia are difficult to pin down. The brain is a complicated organ and there is any number of things which might cause it to malfunction in specific ways. That’s why most research concentrates on identifying specific risk factors. Some known risk factors include Diabetes,

Anxiety, Depression, Lack of exercise, Head injuries or traumatic brain injury, and Hearing loss. How Is Hearing Loss Causing Dementia? Hearing loss is a risk factor, and it may have something to do with how your brain changes when you’re no longer able to hear. When you develop hearing loss, you begin to strain to hear everything you’re supposed to hear. It takes more work, and your brain must change the way it operates. And it’s those exertions and alterations, some researchers believe, that leave the brain more vulnerable to developing dementia later in life. What Can You Do? If you’re at an increased risk for developing dementia, you need to treat the risk factors. 1. Get Regular Hearing Screenings. A hearing exam can help you spot any deterioration in your hearing in the earliest stages. A baseline can establish a starting point to measure any changes in the future. 2. Determine Whether You Need Hearing Aids. If you’re already noticing

some hearing loss, hearing aids can be a vital tool in preventing an accelerated cognitive decline. With a hearing aid, your hearing won’t have to strain your brain so much to hear what’s happening around you. 3. Stay Active. Make sure you are socially and physically active daily and using your brain. If you are concerned about brain health, your hearing and you want to take steps to prevent or treat any potential hearing loss, call us for your personal consultation. Giving Back

Kim Sharpe

Diving in to help

How volunteers are helping to feed Fort Collins WHEN YOU GROW UP ON a cattle ranch, you get used to hard work of all kinds and it’s hard to quit that habit. Just ask Deb Artzer, a retired teacher who gives much of her time and talent back to the community. Deb’s volunteer curriculum vitae is awe inspiring. For 10 years, she gave tours and helped manage wedding details at the Avery House in Fort Collins. For three years, she dressed up on Sunday afternoons as Linkelton, a pink bug-like character who would appear at children’s performances to teach audiences about theater etiquette. She also teaches safe cycling to kids through the City of Fort Collins Safe Routes to School program; helps Trees, Water & People reforestation and community building projects; supports women athletes through the Female Athlete Network; makes sure local children from families with a lowincome receive Christmas gifts from Serve 6:8; and drives undocumented people wherever they need to go, like the immigration office in Denver or to a driver’s license bureau. Last summer she learned about a new nonprofit that piqued her interest—Vindeket Foods. Vindeket is a grocery store that rescues food from restaurants, other grocery stores, and farms—“food on the edge,” as Vindeket founder Nathan Shaw calls it. Consumers want to see perfect fruit and vegetables, so stores throw away a lot of edible food if it’s blemished in any way. Shaw discovered this while dumpster diving, which he likes to do for fun. “I’m a resourceful kind of guy who likes to make magic happen,” Shaw says. When he witnessed the overabundance of food 50 |

waste, he decided to do something about it, so he opened Vindeket Foods. The grocery store relies almost exclusively on volunteers to reclaim food, stock the store and sell its inventory. Deb is one of about 100 people who make it happen, and there’s a need for many more. Vindeket Foods (www.vindeket.org), located at 1317 Webster Ave. in Fort Collins, is open for business at various times on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Deb volunteers regularly on Tuesday afternoons and more when she can. “When I learned about Vindeket from a friend in a Spanish-conversation group

I’m in, I thought, ‘It would be fun to do retail,’” Deb says. “But I’ll also do just about anything. I’ve told Nate (Shaw) to just call me when he needs help. One time I put some of my ranching skills to work to build and repair some metal shelves. I love the work. It’s good for the environment and it’s good for people.” She encourages others to find a way to give back to the community in a way that’s meaningful for them. “As a retired person, volunteering is a way to get you out of the house, and it keeps you mentally and physically active. It’s so good to get out there and do something purposeful.”
