Occupy su mmer Choosing the right activities for your child

By Kim Sharpe

I

t’s that time of year. The time when flowers begin to bloom, trees leaf out, grass greens up and parents panic. Summer is almost upon us and without a plan for how to keep kids occupied, it could be a very long season. When my sons were younger, I would set aside time specifically to plan summertime activities for them. I would arm myself with as many activity guides and brochures as possible, the family budget and ideas from my boys as to what they wanted to do. As a matter of fact, that is a great place to start when choosing activities for your kids. Kid-generated ideas A great way to decide what kinds of activities might be right for your kids is to ask them what they would like to do during their summer break from school. Have a good old-fashioned brainstorming session to generate ideas about how they would like to spend some of their time. What are they interested in? Would

they like to learn how to play an instrument, try a new sport or learn a craft? When given the opportunity, kids come up with amazing ideas about what they want to do or try. And when kids help generate activity ideas, they are more apt to stay engaged in the chosen ones. They also can learn negotiating skills as together you pare down their list and make decisions based on what is feasible for your family. Parental prerogative While getting input from kids is an important part of the activity-choosing process, kids should understand their parents have veto power because they better understand issues of cost, timing and safety. “For us, price and child safety are huge,” says Patti Schmitt, a Fort Collins mother of a 7-year-old girl and a 5year-old boy. “As far as safety goes, there are two things that I ask if I will not be at an activity the whole time my kids

| rmparent | PROG RAM & A CT I V I TY g u i d e

are there. I first ask what the bathroom policy is for kids. Secondly, if it is a camp where the kids will go swimming or be changing clothes, I want to know what the procedure is for that. Red flags for me are if there are no policies around these two things or if there is ever a time when adults are alone with one child in the bathroom or clothes changing area. Also, if I do not stay for the lesson or activity, I usually come back early to ‘spot check’ the safety practices of the organizer. Additionally, I have a conversation with my kids about safety issues.” Jon Holsten, sergeant with the Fort Collins Police Department and author of the award-winning book The Swimsuit Lesson, says talking to kids is imperative to their safety and well-being. “We have got to talk to our kids about [child sexual abuse]. And if you don’t, you are being foolish.” Hosten wrote The Swimsuit Lesson to give parents a resource for talking with their children about this difficult, but important subject.

Heather Meyer, a Loveland mom of three, shared the criteria she uses when choosing activities for her children. It includes: Quality—Do the activities enrich their lives or just kill time? Variety—Not only in the activities provided, but also in the people participating. “I firmly believe in activities that bring people from varying classes together, and particularly think it is important to help our kids build friendships across class and racial lines in the early years so that they will continue this into adulthood.” Safety/Screening—“I need to know that the authorities of an activity are well-trained, not sex offenders in hiding (which I realize sadly is not always caught by background screening, but I do appreciate efforts made to reduce the likelihood).” Healthy Focus—“Quality food (if provided), lots of physical activity and good relationship practices are important to us.” Cost—“We are primarily a oneincome family, so we have to be conscientious with our budget.” Kick ‘em out Kick your kids out of the house–just for the health of it! More and more research points to our society’s increasing disconnect with nature as the source of many of its ills, including obesity, depression and stress. In his book, Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv says, “a growing body of research links our mental, physical, and spiritual health directly to our association with nature–in positive ways. Several of these studies suggest that thoughtful exposure of youngsters to nature can even be a powerful form of therapy for attention-deficit disorders and other maladies. As one scientist puts it, we can now assume that just as children need good nutrition and adequate sleep, they may very well need 10

contact with nature.” Rob Novak, an education program coordinator for the Larimer County Department of Natural Resources, agrees that “time outside is important for many reasons for kids. If they’re playing outside, they’re playing more vigorously and being outdoors in green settings reduces stress. There’s no part of a child’s development that isn’t enhanced by being outside and spending time in nature.” Through its “Plug Into Nature” initiative, Larimer County recently surveyed parents about the time their families spend outdoors. Resoundingly “parents said the time they spend outside is high, but want even more time outdoors with their kids.” As a result, Novak said the County will work on protecting more natural areas and building more natural habitat areas into area parks, like rocks to climb on, dirt to dig in and water to manipulate. Better balance Whatever activities you and your kids decide they may participate in this summer, leave plenty of unscheduled time for them just to hang out. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says free, unstructured play is healthy and essential. In an AAP report, Dr. Kenneth R. Ginsburg encourages pediatricians to educate parents about the benefits of “…free play and some unscheduled time...[A]lthough very well intentioned, arranging the finest opportunities for their children may not be parents’ best opportunity for influence…shuttling their children between numerous activities may not be the best quality time.” In our rushed society, we often forget that it’s okay just to “be.” So set a healthy example by stretching out with your kids in some grass and gazing up at the clouds. You may be surprised at the summertime images you’ll conjure up in the process.

Budget-friendly fun for all Lessons, classes and camps are great ways for kids to spend their summer, but as many families are on tight budgets, some of these options may be cost prohibitive. That’s when it is good to have a list of free and low-cost activities at your fingertips: • Ride a bike* • Walk the dog • Skateboard* •P lay catch with a ball or Frisbee • Read a book • Play board and card games • Run through a sprinkler • Jump rope • Fly a kite • Play jacks •W rite a letter, poem, story or play • Act out a play • Draw, paint or color •D ecorate your driveway or sidewalk with chalk • Play hopscotch • Do a jigsaw puzzle • Collect bugs and insects • Hunt for four-leaf clovers • Go on a picnic •M ake puppets and perform a puppet show • Play tag • Blow bubbles • Play marbles • Write a song •B uild and run an obstacle course • Play dress up • Go fishing • Roller skate* • Play with friends • Invent a game • Climb a tree *Practice safety when riding bikes, skateboarding or roller skating by wearing protective equipment, such as a helmet.

When is the BEST time to HELP your CHILD 50% OFF YOUR ACADEMIC SUCCEED THIS SCHOOL YEAR? Today! EVALUATION With this ad, Expires 4/15/11 When it comes to helping kids succeed in school, no one does it better than Huntington. If your child struggles with homework, can’t keep up with classwork, or just wants to get ahead, call us. We can help. We can identify what is keeping your child from being his or her best and create a program of instruction tailored to his or her needs. Just a few hours a week can improve your child’s skills, confidence and motivation and the bad grades for good! From a CSU Student/former ACT Prep student at Huntington : Huntington Learning Center is the best thing I have ever done for my learning. I joined the ACT program because my first score was not high enough to get into college. After doing the program I raised my score significantly. Huntington not only helped with my reading, but also helped with my study skills. When it was time to apply to CSU, the directors went with me to help me get in. Now I am at Colorado State University and if I did not go to Huntington Learning Center I would not be at CSU. If you are thinking about Huntington I would recommend it fully.

“Huntington helps me learn how to write and read.”

Ann B. – Mom “I am so delighted with Blaise’s reading. It is so fluent and he comprehends well. I know he is ready for 1st grade.”

Worth every penny: The tutors were very focussed and professional, and I cannot get over the strides my son made. It truly has made a difference in all our lives. I know I’m gushing, but that is HOW GREAT I think Huntington is! The staff went above and beyond to keep in contact with my son’s teachers, and really helped build his confidence. As he begins his fourth grade year, I am so thrilled with not only the real educational gains he has made, but his overall attitude toward learning and belief in himself. HIGHLY recommend!
