Playing it safe this summer

Keep your kids safe and injury free with these practical tips Janet Kask

A

s winter turns into spring and temperatures increase, so does the amount of time that children spend outdoors playing a variety of sports. Safe Kids of Larimer County has some practical tips to help your family reduce the chances of injury. National Playground Safety Week is April 25th. Each year, approximately 615 children die from injuries involving playground equipment, and more than 200,000 are treated in emergency rooms. Falls account for 80 percent of playground injuries; however, most playground fatalities are caused by strangulation and tend to occur on home playgrounds. Parents and caregivers need to keep kids in sight and in reach on the playground. Kids on a playground need your undivided attention! Safe Kids of Larimer County reminds parents and caregivers to: • Remove hood and neck drawstrings from young children’s clothing and outerwear as they can pose a risk for strangulation on playground equipment. • Don’t allow your kids to engage in or play near any pushing, shoving or crowding around playground equipment. • Make sure playground equipment is inspected frequently and kept in good repair. • Keep toddlers under age 5 in a separate play area, away from equipment designed for bigger kids.

In sports, the number of injuries to children may also increase. Five to 14-year-old children account for nearly 40 percent of all sport-related injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms. Here are some recommended sports safety tips for coaches, parents and league organizers to prevent sportrelated injuries: 8 | RMPARENT

• Plan for a pre-season medical screening • Use correct safety gear • Check on coaching qualifications (first aid and CPR) • Execute proper conditioning (warm-ups and cool-downs) • Prepare for proper hydration • Rest when overly tired or injured

Another important reminder is the danger of heatstroke for children being left alone inside a hot car. “More than half of all vehicle heatstroke deaths in children are caused by a child accidentally being left in the car, and more

than 30 percent are from a child getting into a hot car on their own,” says Safe Kids member and Crime Prevention Officer Mary Marchio of Loveland Police Department. In an effort to prevent these needless tragedies, we want to urge all parents and caregivers to do four things: • NEVER leave a child in a vehicle unattended; • Make a habit to look in the backseat

| Youth Program & Activity GUIDE

EVERY time you exit the car. • ALWAYS lock the car and put the keys out of reach. • And if you ever see a child left alone in a hot vehicle, call 911 right away.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash vehicle fatalities for children 14 and under. In fact, one child dies from heatstroke, nearly every 10 days, from being left in a hot vehicle. Take steps to remember not to leave a child in a vehicle.

For more information on safety issues, please contact the Safe Kids Larimer County office at 970-495-7504. Let’s work together to have a safe spring for all of our children. Safe Kids Larimer County, led by UCHealth, is part of Safe Kids Worldwide Campaign, the first and only worldwide organization dedicated solely to the prevention of accidental injury. There are more than 400 Coalitions around the world.

Round ‘em up,

get ‘em out Kids learn and create through unstructured outdoor playtime and local programs

L

et’s face it. Coloradans are spoiled when it comes to weather. We enjoy more than 300 days of sunshine every year. We know that if we don’t like whatever it’s doing outside, we just need to wait awhile and it will change. Perhaps this is why the past winter felt so long. The weather didn’t seem to change for months. While winter weather beckons some people to go out and play, it makes others curl up and hibernate. And eat too much. And spend too much time in sedentary pursuits. Sunny, warm weather or not, research by George Mason University Professor Laurlyn Harmon shows “kids are spending 50 percent less time outdoors than they did 10 years ago...Couple [that] trend with increasing levels of child obesity, decreasing time of outdoor play in grade schools and increasing need for support of public lands, and it’s

12 | RMPARENT

clear why reduced time spent outdoors is a national concern.” It’s also a state concern. The recently released Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index has dropped Colorado from being the thinnest state in the nation to No. 2. Its obesity rate of 20.4 percent places the state second to Montana, which has an obesity rate of 19.6 percent. Both states are still leaps and bounds ahead of the state with the highest obesity rate, however; Mississippi comes in last at 35.4 percent. A study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows a 43 percent decrease in early childhood obesity nationwide, however. And the 2012 Colorado Child Health Survey estimated that 26.6 percent of Colorado’s children (ages 1–14) were overweight or obese, down from 31.4 percent in 2011. Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director

| Youth Program & Activity GUIDE

and chief medical officer of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, responds: “This is great news. We finally are turning the corner on the obesity epidemic that has spread across our country—to even our youngest citizens. We know that obese children often turn into obese adults. Through comprehensive, evidence-based childhood obesity prevention efforts, health professionals, experts and advocates are working hard to save the next generation from a life of obesity and chronic disease.” Ways to play Research shows that kids who play outdoors are more creative and imaginative, earn better grades in school, live longer and experience happier childhoods. So what can kids do outdoors? The options are limitless and don’t need to be complicated. One of the best things

kids can do outdoors is have unstructured playtime, allowing them to use their imaginations and naturally stay active. If your children are not accustomed to being turned loose in the yard, they may tell you they’re bored and there’s nothing to do. But fear not. “Boredom is good for kids. It forces them to entertain themselves, which ignites their creative intelligence. From this, they learn that they can solve their own problems. This is huge!” says Lenore Skenazy, author of Free Range Kids (http://freerangekids. wordpress.com/ ). As parents, be available for ideas (and to share safety tips), but let your kids learn how to think on their own and be original. If they need a few ideas to get their creative juices flowing, suggest they: Ride a bike Go for a walk Explore a field Swim in a pool or lake Play sports Go to the park Have a picnic Play hide-and-seek Throw a ball around Walk the dog Camp out under the stars. Local connections As the days become longer and warmer, local outdoor-focused community groups are gearing up for the season. Larimer County’s Natural Resources Department is coordinating northern Colorado’s “Get Outdoors Day” scheduled for June 14, 9am-3pm, at City Park in Fort Collins. Get Outdoors Day is a national event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun. Participating programs will offer opportunities for families to experience traditional and nontraditional types of outdoor activities. Primary goals of the day are reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting youth with the great outdoors. This is the second year the event will be held in Fort Collins. “Healthy Kids Club is excited to be part of this event,” says Laurie Zenner, Healthy Kids Club manager. “The plan for the day includes having a central ‘stage’ area for large presentations and speakers, and then smaller ‘villages’

around these themes: recreation/adventure, stewardship, nature lovers, health and bicycles. Healthy Kids Club will coordinate the Health Village. Additionally, we are going to use this event as our kick-off for our annual Fit Families on the Move program. We think it’s a great event for our families to take advantage of.” Educo Leadership Adventures is another locally based organization that helps kids enjoy the great outdoors. It offers adventures throughout Colorado and Wyoming that include camping, backpacking, rock climbing, white-water rafting and mountain biking for youth 10 to 16 years of age. Educo has a tiered pricing structure and full “camperships” for those who qualify “because we want to make the wilderness and outdoors available to everyone,” says Nick Pelliterri, Educo’s director. Pelliterri says Educo also partners with other programs in the area, such as the Boys & Girls Clubs and Girl Scouts, to offer summer camps for their participants. Many of these groups use Educo’s camp near Red Feather Lakes. Another nearby camp enjoyed by thousands of families each year is the YMCA of the Rockies located in Estes Park. It offers day camp and overnight programs that enable kids to learn, grow and play together in a supportive and nurturing atmosphere. Greeley’s Centennial Village is

an eight-acres “living” museum that allows visitors to experience northeastern Colorado as it was over 100 years ago. The Village is offering several family events through this season, beginning on April 7 when it will host Baby Animal Days. Several furry friends will be available to interact with children ages 2 and up. On Memorial Day Weekend, the Village will welcome Buffalo Soldiers, Mountain Men and others who will reenact some of our area’s most historic events. All of the events are meant to reconnect people with our agrarian roots. “We’re losing it. We’re losing sight of our agricultural heritage that is pivotal to everyone’s past,” says Bill Armstrong, curator of education and living history. “Our programs are intended to reconnect people to what it means to spend your whole life concerned about plants, animals and largely living outdoors.”
