Get outside—safely! Travel through summer injury-free
ALISON NEWMAN
S
ummertime is almost here and it is warming up quickly. For our children, summer means less work and more play. But with more play comes more possibilities for injuries. Whether your children are off to camp or playing in the backyard, here are some safety tips to remember throughout the summer.
• Pack a water bottle (filled with water). Staying hydrated at our elevation is extremely important! It takes much more water to stay hydrated in the summer.
DAY CAMPS • P ut sunscreen on, using a minimum of SPF 15, in the morning before you drop the kids off. Ideally sunscreen should be put on 30 minutes before you go outside. This is recommended even if it is a cloudy day.
• Have your child bring (or make sure the camp provides) protective gear for certain activities. For example, helmets for bikes, scooters, etc. Make sure it fits properly.
• Remind camp staff to reapply sunscreen later in the day. Provide your own sunscreen with your child’s name on it. • Dress them in light colored, cotton clothing; have them wear a hat and sunglasses.
• Pack healthy snacks for the day. This will keep them energized and ready for a fun-filled day.
• If the camp will be taking field trips, find out if you need to provide a car seat or booster seat and make sure the staff knows how to install it. WATER SAFETY • Never let a child go in the water before testing the temperature. If the water is too cold, it may affect the child’s breathing or cause cramps.
• Do not let your child dive into water unless an adult is present and knows the water is deeper than 9 feet. • Remember that swimming aids such as water wings or noodles are fun toys for kids, but they should never be used in place of a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD). • If your child is not a good swimmer, insist they wear a life jacket when near water (pool, lake, river, etc.) or when participating in water sports. Most children who drown had no intention of actually getting in the water. Drowning happens silently. OUT AND ABOUT • M ake sure your child is wearing appropriate footwear. Flip f lops are not a good option if they are going to be physically active. Closed-toed shoes will help lessen any injuries for a variety of activities. •G oing hiking? Avoid using scented soaps or perfumes when hiking and apply insect repellent with DEET, which is most effective against ticks and mosquitoes. The benefits of DEET reach a peak at a concentration of 30 percent, the maximum concentration currently recommended for infants and children. You should not use DEET on children under 2 months of age. • A child’s body temperature rises three times faster than an adult, so insist on frequent rest breaks in the shade and lots of water. • Avoid caffeinated drinks as they dehydrate kids more quickly.

• Teach your older children where safe areas are to play. The park or field across the street is a much better option than the street. • A lways have your children wear the right, properly fitted protective gear when they practice and play team sports. • Never let them ‘play through’ an injury. If a concussion is suspected, get them off the field immediately and seek medical attention to get them checked out. • If you keep your windows open, put window guards up. Screens are to keep bugs out, not to keep children in. • Ensure that children use ageappropriate playground equipment. Separate play areas for bigger kids and children under 5 should be available and maintained. 10 | RMPARENT
OUR ROLE AS PARENTS • Become trained in first aid and CPR – you might never need it, but if you do; it could be the difference between life and death.
• Enroll your child in swim lessons as early as age 4 (recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics).
Teach your child to know what is safe and unsafe. As a parent, you cannot always be around to protect them. Equipping them with safe teachings and the confidence to know when something isn’t safe is a best practice. Safe Kids Larimer County is committed to keeping children safe from accidental injury. Check out our website at www.sklarimer.org for more safety tips and information on how they can help you. Safe Kids is led by the University of Colorado Health.
• Active supervision can prevent a lot of the accidental injuries that children face.
Alison Newman is the health educator at Community Health-Injury Prevention at UCHealth.
• Have your child get a general physical exam before participating in sports or other intense activities.
• Watching your child (or joining in) while they play is critical to their safety. • Role model proper safety behavior. Children are more likely to follow safety rules when they see their parents doing so.

Kids in W ild
Spaces
Finding the balance between planned and free time Hillary Mizia
T
he silence filled our ears. Nervous smiles and nudging elbows settled into quiet reflection and still faces. We listened to the sounds around us, the children focusing on their task at hand: find shapes in the sounds of the Ponderosa pine forest. Soon wide eyes and bright smiles pointed out the circle of birds singing in a round, the long line drawn by the wind in the trees, the polka dots made by dripping water. No matter the age of the children, the idea of hearing shapes was a challenge that appealed to them in equal parts joy and curiosity. APPEALING TO WONDER As a college student and camp naturalist in the mid-90s, this was a regular experience for me. Tasked with educating the campers about nature, I quickly learned that the children were far more likely to take in any ecological concepts I brought to them if I had appealed to their innate sense of wonder. Turning to master environmental practitioners like Joseph Cornell and Steve Van Matre for inspiration and tools, I was greeted with a dilemma: how much teaching should I do? Does a 6 year old really need to know the facts about the world around him, or can his magical connection to those things around him actually teach me a thing or two? Does the questioning mind of a 13 year old need to be told what the world is doing, or asked to experience it for herself and draw her own conclusions? Which 16 | RMPARENT
scenario creates a competent, aware person? Could it be both? GUIDE AND TEACH Those summer experiences confirmed for me what I had been studying in college: children were not empty vessels to be filled with the knowledge, but intelligent creatures in their own right who should be guided as well as taught. According to The Roots of Environmental Education: How the Past Supports the Future by Edward McCrea, this concept is fundamental to Environmental Education (EE), and the push-pull relationship between how structured a person’s learning environment should be can be seen clearly in its foundation. Here in Colorado, EE is defined in the Colorado Environmental Education Plan (CEEP), which is a result of bipartisan legislation signed into law in 2010, as “a life-long learning process that increases an individual’s awareness of, relationship with, and dependence on the environment and its systems.” HANDS OFF APPROACH Now as a mother of two and nearly twice the age I was as a camp naturalist, I’ve realized a third piece to the equation: hands off is just as important as hands on, no matter how gentle the hands on might be. Guide, teach, and also do nothing. Give children educational experiences in the out of
| YOUTH PROGRAM & ACTIVITY GUIDE
doors, yes. Give them space to run and laugh, of course. But also allow them to explore, be still, and to contemplate without any lesson, in spaces as wild and untouched as you can. Let them think of nothing for a while, or of everything, while no adult is there to guide them. Take them not only outside, but also to places kissed, rather than controlled, by humans. This helps set a solid foundation for life-long learning and contributes to what Rudolph Steiner, founder of both bio-dynamic farming and Waldorf education, referred to as “capacities.” FINDING A CONNECTION TO THE OUTDOORS Sitting somewhere between character building and academic achievement, capacities are the aspects of a person that can’t really be taught, only fostered through experience, that contribute to a successful, prosperous life. In the world of private Waldorf education, which is itself both experiential and nature-based, the four capacity areas are intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual. My own personal experience has taught me that a connection with places wild and untouched hit on all four of the capacity areas far more deeply than a day spent walking the city or an afternoon at the park. And when you consider that almost one-third of children in Colorado live in neighborhoods without a park, playground, recreation center, trail, or
other safe place to experience the out of doors, (according to Colorado Environmental Education Plan) and that nationally children spend 85 percent of their time indoors, (according to Environmental Education Matters, Colorado Environmental Education Leadership Council) finding the time to bring children to natural spaces becomes even more important. PROVIDING HOPE FOR THE FUTURE By providing both structured and unstructured time in places more wild than not, we are providing hope for the future. The CEEP also states that “ . . . Colorado students need to be prepared to address present and future environmental challenges and innovations that impact quality of life. Colorado’s environment, economy, and communities depend on informed citizens who can make decisions . . . “ What better way to do this than by supplying a wide range of outdoor experiences for our children that teach concepts, build capacities, and allow time to simply be? We can’t protect or fight for that with which we do not have a connection. Luckily for families in Colorado, myriad resources are available for connecting children and adults with both structured and unstructured time in places more wild than not. One glance at the Rocky Mountain Parent camp guide and it’s easy to see just how many programs provide the structured piece of the equation. The Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE), while focused mainly on connecting various environmental educators with each other and other EE resources, is a great place to contact if you’re looking for a particular type of outdoor educational experience. Indeed, thanks to the support behind the Colorado Environmental Education Plan, CAEE is working across the state to create a comprehensive inventory of all types of environmental education providers and programs. FINDING TIME FOR EXPERIENCES IN NATURE The other piece of the equation, finding time and space for unstructured experiences in nature, is so simple it may actually feel daunting. As parents and
caretakers we get so used to creating activities, safe places, and time frames for our children that to shed those impulses may take a bit of unlearning on our part. Start by finding a place that inspires you personally, that speaks to something your family values, or that is physically close. While there may be a neighborhood park that has a uniquely untouched corner, I encourage you to broaden your scope to include city, county, or state designated Natural Areas, the foothills, and up into the mountains. Strive for a place without signs, a paved trail, or other prescriptive aspects, even if only in part. Remember, this part of the equation is about allowing for unstructured experience in an unstructured place. Set aside a chunk of time to spend there and then . . . just be. My own children are now 6 and 9. With the heat and sunshine of summer ahead, I look forward to not planning each of their days. I hope to provide the gift of unstructured time peppered with some of the amazing environmental education programs along the Front Range. Some days I may ask my kids about the shapes they hear while we walk or sit, but I hope that I can silence my need to fill the space long enough for them to experience that space as their own. Our future depends on it.

The U9 & U10 Player Development League (PDL) is the stepping stone from City Rec soccer to the Advanced Program. It is designed for boys and girls in the “Under 9 & Under 10” age group. Players looking for a higher level of competition with limited travel will greatly benefit from the academy-style training and focus on growing in the game.
Competitive Team Selection Dates at Monfort Park Tryouts will be Tuesday, May 26, Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28. Times will be announced at a later date
PDL Registration: May 1 - July 15
RecPlus Program

Teams experience an increased level of competition, do limited travel and also participate in their own age division. *Both RecPlus players will compete against teams from Fort Collins, Loveland, and Windsor during an 8-game fall and spring season. With the increased competition base, it provides opportunity to develop your child’s skills to the next level.
