THE NATURE DEFICIT Why today’s youth are in danger and what parents can do about it KATIE HARRIS

I

n this age of technology, there is no question that modern youth spend less and less time interacting with nature. In fact, any simple look back through the generations of the past hundred years would show a clear and steady decline in the average amount of time that children spend outdoors in general. Kids these days are under house arrest,” says Kate Kosakowski, a kindergarten para at Harris Bilingual School in Fort Collins who has spent years advocating for kids to be outdoors as a volunteer with Children and Nature Connection of Northern Colorado. “Today’s kids are growing up in a bubble-wrapped, sanitized society where they are missing out on the connection

10 | RMPARENT

Connecting kids with nature Kate Kosakowski has lots of ideas for you to get out and explore!

Go for a nature walk: Let your kids pick up a stick and play with it—sticks are the toys that have withstood evolution! Take a bike ride: The ability to ride bikes almost everywhere is a huge benefit of living in the northern Colorado area.

Hit the park: Almost everywhere in Fort Collins is within walking distance of a park—let your kids “break the school playground rules” and test their limits! Get over the fear factor: Stop consciously and unconsciously teaching your kids that the outdoors is a dangerous place. Don’t be afraid to get a little lost.

Start a small garden: Turn some soil, throw some seeds out and let your kids do the watering. Explore a natural area or open space: Let your kids take the lead, and when they stop to examine something stop with them. Learn to view the world through your child’s eyes. Live a little: If your child wants to dig a hole let her! If she wants to splash let her get wet! If she falls and scrapes her knee celebrate the new scar!

with nature that older generations had,” she says. “Specifically they are missing out on the chance for unrestricted and unsupervised outdoor play.” Kosakowski says the biggest disparities she notices in the classroom between students who spend significant time outdoors and those who don’t are their imaginative abilities. “We see such a difference in kids who are exposed to green spaces, playing in the mud, and climbing trees,” she says. “They have higher executive functioning.” Kosakowski’s sentiments are echoed in the 2005 book “Last Child in the Woods,” in which author Richard Louv describes the range of behaviors frequently seen as a result of children spending less time outdoors in nature, coining the term “nature-deficit disorder.” In the article “No more naturedeficit disorder” posted by Louv on psychologytoday.com, he explains that the term was meant to describe “the psychological, physical and cognitive costs of human alienation from nature, particularly for children in their vulnerable developing years.” These costs, according to numerous studies done on the topic in years since, include an increase in mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, as well as increased cases of attention deficit disorder (ADD), effects Kosakowski says she’s seen firsthand. “As an ADD kid myself, I thank God I was able to run and jump and play outside growing up,” she says. “Now in the classroom I see the difference in kids who have been able to play outdoors on their own.” In fact, multiple studies have found that microbiomes found in dirt are likely to provide natural immunity against mood disorders, which can in turn effect overall health, according to the article “Mental health may depend on creatures in the gut” published on scientificameri can.com on March 1, 2015. Other studies show physical health declining as a result of less time in nature. According to the National Recreation and Park Association’s website nrpa.org, the sedentary lifestyle and

decrease in outdoor time in today’s children has resulted in unprecedented and rising levels of obesity. Nrpa.org says that children today spend an average of only four to seven minutes per day outdoors in an unstructured environment, while spending an average 7.5 hours in front of electronic media. In addition to obesity, excessive amounts of screen time have recently been found to lead to an increase in Myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Just last month, Optometry Australia came out with new evidence that children are developing Myopia at a much earlier age—once uncommon before puberty, their studies find a significant increase in Myopia in children as young as 5. “A growing body of evidence now suggests that a lack of outdoor light is contributing to the development of myopia,” says Optometry Australia spokesman Luke Arundel in the article “Optometrists warn myopia is a ‘looming epidemic’ for screen-addicted children” published on news.com.au on March 10, 2017. In the article, Arundel stresses the importance of children spending a couple hours outside each day in order to avoid a huge jump in the number of nearsighted people in the world. In addition to the effects a lack of time in nature has on today’s youth, scientists and activists are concerned about the implications for the earth itself. According to nrpa.org, “By engaging with nature, individuals gain an understanding about the impact that their actions can have on our natural environment.” The site says that the disconnect between today’s youth and nature will likely lead to troubling effects on the future of conservation, as well as the future of our economy and the health and wellness of our communities. “By allowing our kids to gain confidence outdoors, to stimulate their senses and connect with nature, we raise kids who are respectful, in tune with their surroundings, and better able to thrive both in the classroom and outside of it,” says Kosakowski.

“We are creating our next stewards of the environment,” she says. They can’t protect something they’re not in love with.”

Off the Hook Arts Offers

Five-day, Summer Music and Arts Camp Off the Hook Arts once again offers its popular summer music camp, this year celebrating themes of social justice and human rights through the magical world of Harry Potter. SummerFest Music and Art Workshop will explore theater arts through the lens of Hogwarts Spell Casting class; experience music through movement with Dalcroze, design sets and costumes; and provide a fun-filled study of string instruments for beginners (already started) through advanced performers. The camp runs daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 10 to 14 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Stuart St. Tuition is $260 but scholarships are available — just ask! Application deadline is June 10. This summer camp will bring inspiration, intuition and imagination to kids this summer by offering a fun and educational way to learn more about themselves and the arts. Collaborating with the Northern Colorado Fiddle Camp and Integral Steps, OTHA’s String Players can choose between traditional classical track blended with fiddle music or a purely fiddle track of study. This division of the program brings the finest faculty together for an intensive and uplifting week of great music making through world music, Suzuki tunes, fiddling, chamber music, master classes and music games. Faculty includes Margaret Gutierrez, Kat Fritz, Cody Stadelmaier and Vi Wickam. Our Music Explorers is geared for

children who don’t yet play an instrument. Led by the extremely creative faculty of Integral Steps, sessions will include a multifaceted Integrative Arts Adventure. OTHA will combine kinesthetic learning through music and movement (Dalcroze Eurhythmics); performance through theater arts; and expressive learning through fine arts and theater design. A Tri-wizard Tournament will help house elves seeking equality and dignity. This theatrical experience is based on an original play by J.K. Rowling. Students will perform scenes and songs in the final performance. All students participate in these theatre and Dalcroze classes, and String Players will perform a showcase of the week’s repertoire in an outdoor public location. For more details and registration information please refer to our website, www.OffTheHookArts.org or call 970-305-2261.
