The first thing I have to explain about what I do is that it’s not voodoo, witchcraft, or some fringe therapy. Hippotherapy, though typically performed in a barn or outdoor environment, is treated just the same by the therapist as physical, occupational, or speech treatment in a traditional clinical setting. We use the same strategy, techniques, and goal-setting mentality, we just tend to prefer a different therapeutic tool: the horse. The reason for this preference is that the horse is comprehensive. It incorporates balance, core strength, limb strength, coordination, vestibular input, and sensory input simultaneously. And of course, in addition, it imparts the emotional and psychological benefits of the natural human horse bond, something that can never be overstated. Does this mean we spend the entire time on the horse? Not exactly. Depending on what goals the therapist is working toward some of the session may take place off the horse. It may include grooming, tacking, and preparing the horse. It may not even include the horse at all. At times more traditional or conventional exercise and therapy may be used as a compliment. This may include mat work, and mat stretches. Or the more conventional use of balance beams and bolsters. It’s what ever the therapist believes will work to their best advantage. But the environment is always more barn than clinical. And the smell of horses is never far away. So who can participate? Nearly everyone. Over the years we’ve worked with all disabilities and all ages and likely always will. Though there are some contraindications, for the most part anyone who is dealing with balance, strength, coordination or sensory issues will end up benefiting greatly. The last common misconception is that hippotherapy lies outside the insurance-reimbursable world. This is not the case with our programs. We bill insurance just as any outpatient clinical or traditional settings, using the same coding, and are typically very successful with getting full and normal reimbursement. Once people come out and visit and see it firsthand they usually get it. Though hesitant at first, it’s always fun to watch the change in their attitude as they or their children start making significant progress. The common response is, “Wow. This Is much different than I expected.” We’re looking forward to another fun summer out at CSU and invite anyone who has an interest to come join us. Whether looking for therapy, an opportunity to volunteer, or just an excuse to come see and experience something new, all are welcome!
