Welcome to Fifty & Better Opportunities in northern Colorado make it easy to stay active and involved I’M 53 YEARS OLD. I look in the mirror and I see the gray hair and the “character lines” on my face. And my knees hurt a little from time to time, but otherwise I feel pretty dang good. I walk downtown a few times a week. I ride my bike for errands and I get out for a run a few times a week. My wife, Kristin, regularly proclaims that she loves life. And why shouldn’t she. She has a great group of friends. We live in a beautiful, active town. (Of course, there is the challenge of living with me, but she chose that). And we’re old enough to know that life has its ups and downs and that we can roll with them. And we’ve learned to appreciate—our friends and family, a good margarita on a patio, a nice day on a trail along the river. And my parents are enjoying life, too. They just returned from a month visiting my brother and his family in Paris and we’re talking about a week in Steamboat together next month. They play bridge, go for walks on trails, take frequent road trips, and pretty much enjoy every day. Our daughter, Aly, and I watched Greg, our friend and co-worker, finish the Colorado Marathon this morning. He’s over 50 and finished in under four hours. I noticed a lot of gray hair crossing that finish line, too. So here is our first go at Fifty & Better. It’s made up of some stories to help you get out and enjoy life. One story highlights events in our area. I hope a few of these are a fit for you. Another story is more of a destination, road-trip feature that spotlights some festivals around Colorado that are worth the drive. And we feel compelled to include a bicycling story because biking is just so great here...bike lanes, riverside bike paths, a variety of bicycle styles, and more. To really help you participate in all that northern Colorado has to offer, we’ve compiled a directory. We’ll call it a work-in-progress, because we know we’ll keep building on it. We’ve actually split the main directory into three smaller directories: Active Fifty & Better Directory, Healthy Fifty & Better Directory and Lifestyle Fifty & Better Directory. In each installment, we’ll feature one of the directories and have stories related to it. This issue, as you’ve probably figured out, focuses on being active and involved. Take a moment to flip through the directory to get an idea of all that is offered here in northern Colorado. What a great place to live! So we’re calling this project Fifty and Better to celebrate life. We know it’s not easy getting older...I can’t tie on a fly without cheaters and my back is a little tighter when I step out of the river. But there are so many great things about having been on this planet for five decades and counting: a sense of community, a feeling of general contentment, some perspective on our journey, a better understanding of ourselves, grandchildren (I’ve heard)... In a culture that celebrates youth, it’s easy to believe that not-youth is bad. But I say, let’s thrive where we are and be who we are (everyone else is taken, anyway). Thanks,
Scott 6|

adults get 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity every day. It helps reduce the risk of developing a myriad of health issues, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis and injuries from falls. Walking usually tops the charts as a simple way to move. But another activity that fits this bill, which mature adults may overlook, is bicycling. Many older people shy away from this activity unnecessarily primarily be-

cause they are afraid of falling. “Bicycling is a safe, low-impact, aerobic exercise that is amenable to all ages and abilities,” says Terri Marty, UCHealth trauma surgeon and avid cyclist. “When starting out in the sport, at whatever age or ability, it is important to know ones limitations, terrain and equipment to avoid injury. Fortunately here in northern Colorado, there are many opportunities for excellent bike fitting, off-road trails and skills training.”
“Seniors seem most concerned about safety and injuries due to crashes. But they also associate bicycling with joy and lack of fear when biking as a child. So our challenge becomes how to marry the two—how to teach them the skills and give them the information they need to feel safe and confident riding a bike again,” says Bruce Henderson, local Bicycle Ambassador who teaches seniors how to get back on a bike through instructional Silver Spokes rides.
The League of American Bicyclists offers the following
five tips for safe riding: Follow the Law
Your safety depends on you. You have the same rights and duties as drivers of motor vehicles. Obey traffic signals and stop signs. Ride in the direction of traffic and use the rightmost lane headed in the direction you are going.
Be Predictable
Make your intentions clear to everyone on the road. Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars. Signal turns and check behind you well before turning or changing lanes.
Be Conspicuous
Ride where people can see you and wear bright clothing. Use a front white light, red rear light and reflectors. Make eye contact with others and avoid riding on sidewalks where motorists aren’t anticipating bicycles to be.
Think Ahead
Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians and other people on bikes will do next. Watch for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars. Look out for debris, potholes and other road hazards. Cross railroad tracks at right angles.
Ride Ready
Check that your tires have sufficient air, brakes are working, chain runs smoothly and quick release levers are closed. Carry tools and supplies that are appropriate for your ride. Wear a helmet. Henderson, a mature cyclist himself, developed Silver Spokes because he wants “…to enable people’s enjoyment of bicycling by providing necessary knowledge and skills to help them feel safe and confident. Bicycling is such an enjoyable activity for people of all ages. Even people who have not been on a bike for several years, or perhaps those who never learned to ride, can discover fun and relaxation on two or even three wheels.”
Silver Spokes rides are both social and educational in nature. Participants bicycle to a lunch destination and back. They need to bring their own well-maintained bicycle, helmet, bike lock and money for lunch, and should be comfortable riding on wide, low-traffic volume streets. Trained cycling instructors monitor the bike ride giving safe riding tips. Routes are less than 10 miles round trip on comfortable, bicyclefriendly trails and streets.
Three rides are currently scheduled: June 4, July 2 and August 13. Interested individuals meet up in the Roland Moore parking lot behind the Fort Collins Senior Center. Experienced, currently riding bicyclists meet at 11am. People who have not ridden in the past two years or who would like an additional safe cycling orientation should plan to meet at 10am. For more information, email info@ bicycleambassadorprogram.org.

SPRING IS NEAR CONTAINER GARDENS ARE IDEAL! Container gardens are ideal for low-maintenance lifestyles Container gardening has grown in popularity as more people opt for low maintenance living with limited outdoor space and are an easy way to create vibrant floral arrangements or grow your own fresh vegetables and herbs. Creating these gardens can be fun and easy and local greenhouses offer a variety of pots and plants and have knowledgeable staff to assist you in your selections. While shopping for containers and plants, keep three things in mind – the location and amount of sun or shade it receives, the types of plants you want to grow and the size and mobility of the pot. Tall, thin containers add height to tall plants and low growing plants look better in short containers. Once the pots have been chosen, get creative with
selecting the plants. Pots full of colorful blooms can be created by mixing perennial varieties and many vegetables and herbs grow well in containers. Planting your garden is the easiest step! Begin by filling half of your container with a good potting soil and then arrange each plant in the pot beginning with the tallest, until you achieve the look you want. To create full looking floral containers do not follow plant spacing directions, instead plant your blooms tightly together and backfill around the plants with dirt until the pot is full. Fertilize your pots and water them thoroughly, then place them in their desired locations. Check them daily to assess their water needs and fertilize
weekly to encourage continued growth. In the excess time you now have, sit back on your patio and enjoy your creations. After all, this is why you chose low maintenance living! “Batten down the hatches” usually means prepare for a storm or trouble. No storms or trouble were found at the Good Samaritan Society - Water Valley Senior Living Resort in Windsor. Instead of stormy weather, an exciting and entertaining cruise ship ball was held for the 152 residents of this active senior living community. Residents competed through trivia games and other activities to earn the honor of being seated at the Captain’s Table. The Cruise Ship Ball was enjoyed by all the residents and the staff. Residents dressed up in their finest clothing, and staff dressed up as Sailors, Cruise Ship Directors,
Captains and even a “Blue Mermaid” was present. All danced to the music of the “Tom Allan Variety Band” Each resident attending the festivities were given a chance to spin a prize wheel, and everyone went home with a prize. Throughout the year, dining management teams up with other departments with a cruise ship passport theme event. Each month, the U.S.S. Good Samaritan “docks” at a port, and the residents enjoy entertainment and cuisine customary for the celebrated country, right here in our restaurant-style dining room. Other events include “Paris, the City of Love” for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated in Ireland, and in April, there will be a “Tulips in Holland” - PAID ADVERTISEMENT -

New lens technology helps correct a basic problem experienced by those with macular degeneration.
R
ecently developed new E-Scoop lenses from Holland now enable doctors to help patients with one of the chief complaints associated with macular degeneration—cloudy vision. Dr. Stamm, a low vision optometrist servicing Nebraska and the Greater Denver area, and is a member of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS), offers new hope and vision. “Macular degeneration not only causes central blind spots but reduces clarity,” says Dr. Stamm. “Most of my patients ask me for clearer vision.” Glasses that use the new technology bridge the gap between standard eyeglasses and spectacle head-borne telescopes. Whether your difficulty is night driving, bright light, sunlight or simply seeing clearly into the distance, the E-Scoop lens placed over a standard eyeglass prescription can help. By combining six different optical properties into a two-lens system, vision can often be enhanced. “We start with the patient’s prescription and then add prism to move the image to a healthy seeing part of the macula,” said Dr. Stamm.
• The lens has five distinct features that make vision clearer and sharper, with reduced glare: • The prism moves the image away from the damaged macular area. • The low vision prescription ensures that patients’ needs are met. • The yellow tint improves contrast. • The thickness of the lens, combined with the special “base” curve, makes objects appear slightly larger. • The anti-reflection coating allows more light through the lens. E-Scoop lenses provide some magnification by using a combination of special lens curvature and thickness. The lenses also incorporate a custom yellow filter and anti-reflective coatings. Dr. Stamm reports, “This is an example of two lenses definitely being better than one.” MACULAR DEGENERATION Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness and reading impairment in the country. Individuals with Macular Degeneration have difficulty seeing well enough to do activities
that require fine detail vision like reading, driving, recognizing faces, and watching television. E-Scoop lenses can help vision by improving clarity for some people. “These lenses cannot make vision perfect, but they do make things better,” said Dr. Stamm. “They also assist with night driving and glare reduction.” ABOUT DR. STAMM Dr. Robert Stamm received his bachelor›s degree in biology from Nebraska Wesleyan University and his doctor of Optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry where he specialized in retinal disease, contact lens fittings, and low vision.

we are local. Clothes Pony & Dandelion Toys first opened their doors in 2003. A
family business, Clothes Pony is owned and operated by Becca and Jenny Bramhall. We spoke with them in April about the store, 11 years of business and the northern Colorado Economy.
Q Why did you open the store? A We’re sisters and have always loved working together on proj-
ects. Becca moved to Fort Collins in 2001 and asked “Where’s the local kids boutique?” There wasn’t one! We spent the next month chasing kids around local playgrounds to check their clothing labels for great brands. In October 2002 we went on our first buying trip, ordering clothes and storing them in Becca’s garage, because we did not have a store front yet. By March 2003, we were open!
Q What do you like best about owning your own business?
A We Love working together. We love watching kids
and families grow up in the store. Our very first customer, who was pregnant with her first child and needed a maternity outfit for her Baby Shower, still shops in the store with her three kids!
Q What do local stores offer? A We offer community! It’s what we were looking for and
what we have created. Treating our customer like beloved guests in our home is something national chains cannot offer. We literally make our buying decisions with our regular customers in mind.
Q How do you stay energized after 10 years in business? A We are always looking forward to meeting the next newly pregnant mama, a brand new set of grandparents and, of course, the newest little baby in town! Witnessing the excitement of our regular customers when they see the beautiful or fun new products we have found never fails to delight us. And, of course, we are always changing the store around to keep everything fresh and interesting.
Q What would you like to see as N Colorado grows? A Fort Collins’ Historic Old Town continues to be a regional draw.
We love being in the heart of Old Town and want to help it keep its character and charm as it grows.
Q What advice would you offer someone thinking about a new business?
A Don’t open a “personal passion” store. Identify a need and try to fill it. Having enough business capital is also huge. Most importantly, “treat your customers like they’re royal guests” in your store!
WE ARE LOCAL is a monthly feature highlighting local businesses in Northern Colorado.
