To be alive here and now Turns out both matter

THE SUN CAME OUT this morning. Now, I like a moody, rainy day as much as the next person, but three in a row stretches my patience. We live here for a reason—well many reasons, but one of them is sunshine. And I thought, how great is it to be alive. I like it.

My friend Ed sent me an article about how where you live affects your health. The writer refers to a book by Dan Buettner called The Blue Zones of Happiness, pockets of the world where people live longer, happier, healthier lives…places that have abundant sunshine, green spaces, an emphasis on fitness and access to whole foods.

So, I checked out his website, www.bluezones.com. I found the information interesting and it rang true for me. In America, it appears, that “in the happiest places people have trust (in their police, neighbors, and local government); good walkability and people-friendly design (sidewalks and safe streets); access to nature (parks, open spaces, trees); civic engagement; clean environment; access to affordable dental care; access to healthy food; and high rates of healthy behaviors (restrictions on smoking, less drug abuse, less obesity).”

I thought, geez, that sounds like northern Colorado and when I looked at the Top 5 happiest cities in America list on the website, there was Fort Collins at No. 4.

The idea is that where you live determines, more than any other factor, your level of happiness. Is your community set up for healthy living, such as access to parks, gyms, open spaces, clean water? And furthermore, people who interact with people the most (in positive ways) are the happiest. Finally, a kind of no-brainer: health and happiness go hand in hand.

I took a look at our current issue to see what was in there that might relate to this whole Blue Zones idea, and found it packed with examples of why NoCo seems to be one. We highlight some of the many activities that encourage people to get outside, mingle, relax with friends. So track down some of these things in this issue: • Food Truck Rallies—get out to the park, order some good food and chat up friends and strangers; • Roof-topping in Old Town—breathe some fresh air, take in the skyline and sip a beverage from a dramatic vantage point; • Open-air concerts—bring a lawn chair to a beautiful open space and enjoy some lovely sounds—uplifting and fun; • Mead and wine—enjoy a glass and a comfy, cozy spot; • Garden tours—seek inspiration from a neighbor; • Volunteer outdoors—meet people from all walks and refresh yourself in nature.

And this is just scratching the surface of everything offered.

We have unlimited opportunity to be happy here. That alone is worth reflecting on, which means taking a moment to slow down and review what parts of our lives bring us happiness and which parts need to go. Sometimes we can be speedy, needy and greedy.

And those are the exact things that separate us from being happy. Slowing down and listening to ourselves and others might be one step all of us can do.

On that note: Take a moment to read and reflect on Bob Calhoun’s poem, Listening to the Voice not Heard.

ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE SIMILARITIES, mead and wine ingredients and methods differ. Traditional mead, the oldest alcoholic drink, ferments boiled honey and water with an occasional fruit and yeast. Hunter’s Moon Meadery uses metal tanks. Others might consider glass or plastic. Sweet/semi-sweet meads require the addition of sugar, but dry meads, similar to dry white wines, lack sugar sweetness.

Wine consists of strained, crushed (by humans or machines) pulp and juice from wine grapes (not the grocery store varieties), combined with sugar, water and yeast.

Fermentations occur most often in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels. Fruits like strawberry, chokeberry, plum and dandelions also make good wines.

Both wine and mead may be sparkling, dry, sweet or semi-sweet.

Northern Colorado hosts Ten Bears Winery in Fort Collins and Bijou Creek Vineyards in Greeley. Meaderies include Hunters Moon Meadery in Severance and Miracle Stag Meadery in Loveland. Check online for more information and tasting times.

HAVE LITTLE GARDEN SPACE or hungry rabbits? Consider container gardens of flowers, vegetables and herbs.

Pick a container to complement your personal style—romantic, Victorian, rustic, modern. Cover the drainage hole with a coffee filter to prevent soil loss. If using a large planter, keep it lighter by filling about one third to one half with Styrofoam peanuts or chunks, upside down pots, plastic cleaner bags and/or bubble wrap. Cover with a good potting mix. For proper drainage in smaller planters, add a layer of pottery shards or rocks in the bottom.

Choose your favorite plants with the rule of thriller (a tall center), surrounded by a filler of color and texture and spiller of cascading plants. Need help? Solicit the advice of a professional at the local garden center. Consider choices for shade or sun, water requirements, color combinations and height differences.

WHEN PEOPLE THINK ABOUT doing drugs and binge drinking, they usually think about teenagers. While teens are known for experimentation and risky behaviors, they actually have competition from their elders when it comes to substance abuse. It’s estimated that one in five people over 65 struggle with alcohol or illicit or prescription drug abuse.

Carl Nassar, director of Heart-Centered Counseling, says it’s largely due to people feeling lonely or isolated, which leads to feelings of anxiety and depression. “If these feelings persist, and people don’t seek support from friends, family or professionals, then they may start looking for coping styles and substances that soothe. Alcohol and drugs are easily accessible and can offer the promise of quick relief. Of course, the short-term cure comes at some high long-term costs.”

Some of those high costs include emergency room visits. According to the 2011 Drug Abuse Warning Network data, there were an estimated 105,982 ED visits by adults aged 65 or older that involved illicit drug use and/or alcohol used in combination with other substances (visits for alcohol alone were not included for adults), or nonmedical use of prescription or over-thecounter medications or herbal remedies.

Dangers of substance abuse can cause people to lose their balance, both physically and mentally. Plus, alcohol and drug abuse can make other health conditions worse, like heart disease, diabetes and liver disease.

If someone you care about has substance abuse issues, “Encourage them to seek support, whether it’s Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or professional counseling,” says Nassar. “If your loved one is in denial and pushes back from you, ask other trusted persons (like a pastor or a friend) to step in and help. And remember, be gentle. Don’t shame. That’ll only get people to try to hide their addictions.”

Enjoy your joe JOE, JAVA, CUPPA, wakey juice. People have many names for coffee, a beloved beverage the world over. In the U.S. alone, 400 million cups of coffee are consumed daily, health professionals debate whether that’s a good thing.

The most recent buzz about coffee and whether it’s healthy to consume centers around a court battle in California. That state considers acrylamide, a chemical produced when coffee beans are roasted, to be a possible cancer-causing agent. For

that reason, a judge ruled coffee should come with a warning label. However, the health jury is out as to whether that’s necessary. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer states there’s no conclusive evidence for a carcinogenic effect of drinking coffee.

In fact, there’s much more evidence to suggest coffee has many health benefits, such as lowering the risk of heart disease, several cancers, Alzheimer’s and Type 2 diabetes.

Just a foot note

TO RECEIVE TOP MARKS in your personal health department, sometimes you must look down…at your feet. Given that the average person takes approximately 10,000 steps each day, it stands to reason that they take a beating.

Dr. Kate Johnson with A Step Ahead Foot and Ankle Center explains that people often experience hammer toes, bunions, arthritis, thickened nails and neuropathy as they age due to all that mileage. But these ailments often can be prevented or treated with roomy shoes, supportive insoles or orthotics, corn pads, regular nail care and possibly debridement performed by a podiatrist. If you think this sounds like a bit much, know that left untreated, foot issues can lead to infections, ulcers, pain and possibly amputation.

Also, “People often forget that their shoe size changes with age,” says Johnson. “Feet commonly widen and lengthen with age. Make sure you take this into consideration when purchasing new shoes.”

Food trucks and live music THE BEST WAY to appreciate the northern Colorado food-truck scene is by attending one of the FOCO Food Truck Rallies taking place this summer. The rallies, which are centered around the many food trucks in the region, take place every Tuesday at City Park in Fort Collins (1500 W. Mulberry St.).

“We’ve been doing this since 2015 and it’s grown and changed every year,” says Sarah Ladley, owner of Ba-NOM-a-NOM food truck and organizer of the FOCO Food Truck Rallies. “I have 34 vendors right now as well as new vendors that are starting to roll in. Everyone is so different and really good!”

The rallies begin at 5:30pm with free, live and local music provided by a partnership with Mishawaka Amphitheater, and 13 dinner trucks, three dessert trucks and two food trucks on site every week, serving up everything from chicken and waffles to corn dogs. Parking for these events is limited, and guests are encouraged to bike, walk or carpool. In addition, guests are welcome to bring their own picnic blankets and chairs to the park.

“The trucks are used to serving a lot of people, so even though the lines seem long they usually move pretty quickly,” says Ladley. “Everyone accepts credit cards or cash, and we have lots of vegan and gluten-free options, so there’s really something for everyone.”

Enjoy the Sounds of Summer: Summer is a great time of the year here in Fort Collins. This city provides so many fun activities to see and HEAR, such as concerts, music festivals, fireworks, hiking, biking, fishing and more.

Imagine yourself walking down Spring Creek Trail. What do you hear? The creek? The birds? People passing you on the trail? If you have hearing loss, these sounds of nature can be muted or sometimes absent. People with untreated hearing loss can miss out on the sounds of nature which can lead to isolation.

Getting your hearing restored with properly fit hearing devices can allow you to hear all the sounds summer has to offer.

Summer is also a time to be mindful about protecting your hearing. Repeated exposure to loud noise, over an extended period can cause serious risks to your hearing health.

Shouting in noisy environments so that you can be heard by someone within arm’s length, is a sign that the noise is potentially dangerous. Some other warning signs include: pain in your ears after leaving a noisy area, hearing ringing or buzzing (tinnitus) in your ears after exposure to noise, sudden difficulty understanding speech after exposure to noise.

A simple tip can be to use disposable earplugs made of foam or silicone when you will be exposed to loud sounds.

RETRO IS THE NEW COOL Cynthia Leibrock, founder of Easy Access to Health, LLC, strongly advocates for people to stay in their own home as they age.

She feels the ideal situation is to build a home that incorporates staying power from the foundation up and is working at the policy level to require all new homes include the “ABCs of Universal Design.” Examples of these elements are accessible, wide routes and doorways; kitchen and bathroom fixture and appliance heights that can accommodate wheel chairs and/or other assistive devices; non-slip surfaces; and glare-free lighting.

If building a new, accessible home isn’t within your budget, Leibrock recommends “retrofitting your home with modifications that enhance independence and prevent disabling accidents.” To help people do that, she established the Rehabitat Fund, which “offers seed money and technical support for the retrofitting, including a home assessment survey.” Learn more at www.agingbeautifully.org.

The Larimer Office on Aging and Weld Area Agency on Aging both stay up to speed on possible funding opportunities for seniors, as well as offer voucher programs to help people pay for care which allows them to live independently as long as possible. Medicare and some private health insurance companies may cover some in-home health-care services. Veterans may be eligible for in-home health-care benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Of course, one of the most economical ways for people to age at home is to have the support of family members. When that’s not available, some people rely on friends or their spiritual communities for help.

But aging well in place all comes back to making a plan and Leibrock recommends doing that sooner than later. She says, “You have to make these decisions before you need them.”

GROWING LOCALLY Learn more about local food and its importance in the community

Many local CSAs, farms and related organizations offer training and education to community members who are interested in learning everything from the logistical skills of growing food to learning more about food accessibility as an issue of social justice.

T

he first thing that comes to mind when we think of our local CSAs is weekly, fresh produce. Those familiar with CSAs aren’t surprised to find that many offer foods beyond fruit and vegetables such as eggs, milk, meat, and honey. Northern Colorado farms continue to grow and we are finding our favorite CSAs are expanding offerings and opportunities for their members that reach into the realms of education, programs for food accessibility, service and volunteering.

SERVICE AND VOLUNTEERING

An increasing number of CSAs offer volunteering opportunities and “working memberships.” Even those with limited growing knowledge and experience can contribute to a community farm. For many, being outdoors, working with their hands, and getting dirty is a rare and exciting opportunity. Being a part of growing the food you consume and being a part of a team of farmers who do the same is uniquely satisfying.

FOOD ACCESSIBILITY

Food security is a growing concern in Larimer County. And many who qualify to receive food assistance are not enrolled to do so. In 2016, the enrollment rate for federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits was only 40 percent of those eligible. In 2016, 21,798 (40 percent of those eligible) were enrolled in SNAP; in Weld County, 25,090 (53 percent of those eligible) were enrolled. It is clear that not all of our communities have equitable access to healthy food and there are many CSAs that want to change that.

The ABCD’s of skin cancer: attention, prevention and detection.

F

olks here in Colorado are generally aware of the risks of skin cancer. They understand that our high altitude and many days of sunshine can put them at higher risk for skin cancer. However, many assume that the feet are immune to this risk. Unfortunately this is not the case. Skin cancer can develop anywhere on the body, including on the feet and even on areas of the foot that are never exposed to sunlight such as on the soles and in between the toes. Due to this assumption, skin cancer on the feet can be particularly dangerous since most either shrug off abnormal skin lesions or don’t even notice them until it is too late. Fortunately all it takes is a little extra attention and knowledge to catch it early and do something about it! Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma are the some of the most common cancers

on the feet. The following are some things to look out for.

Look everywhere! Skin cancer can be found on the soles or the top of the feet, in between the toes and even within the nails Skin cancers are tricky - they can easily be mistaken for a number of various skin problems: a hard projecting callus, plantar wart, fungal infection, eczema, ulcer, benign moles, blood blisters, ingrown nails, foreign bodies and bruises

The ABCD’s can help you remember what to look for: Asymmetry - if the lesion is divided in half do the two sides match?

Borders are irregular - are the edges of the lesion scalloped, uneven or ragged?

Color changes - is there more than one color within the lesion? Multiple colors are possible -

brown, black, pink, red, pearly white or even flesh colored Diameter - is the lesion wider than a pencil eraser (greater than 6 mm)?

Don’t wait - if you have the slightest suspicion that something is abnormal or if something like a wound or fungal infection has not healed and resolved in a timely fashion get checked by a professional.

Also don’t assume that just because a mole has been there for a long time that it can’t be a problem.

Any change from a regular lesion to a larger or more unusual one should be checked.

AFTER RETIRING IN 2012 from his career as a technical writer, Hugh Templeton finally had time to get wild. His volunteer work as a naturalist with the Larimer County Department of Natural Resources, an assistant ranger in Larimer County parks and open spaces, a leader of large animal evacuation teams through the Larimer County Horseman’s Association, and assistant equine educator at Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch gives 74-year-old Templeton time to enjoy Colorado’s great outdoors and wilderness areas in many ways.

“I love the beauty of nature and want to share that love with others,” he says. “Connecting to nature is good for people and we don’t do it enough. Plus, the Bible says we are supposed to be good stewards of the world we live in and I’ve taken that to heart.”

As a volunteer naturalist and assistant ranger, Templeton patrols trails either on foot or horseback, answers questions trail users have, provides 66 |

directions and helps people understand the rules that govern outdoor spaces. In the summer, he gives presentations at campgrounds. He feels people are thirsty for information about nature, and appreciate what he shares with them, but it’s a two-way street…or trail. Templeton says he learns much from researching and preparing for the presentations. “My knowledge and understanding about nature has expanded exponentially.”

Templeton also says that through volunteering, he has gained a higher level of fitness, made many good friends and met a lot of amazing folks. “Ninetynine percent of the people I meet on the trails are real gems.”

If you have a bit of time to spare, a craving to connect to nature and feel like getting a little wild, Templeton recommends getting trained as a naturalist or as an assistant park ranger. If you are interested specifically in the local trail systems, there are many organizations involved in constructing and maintaining them.
