From the Publisher

Pedal on!

The freedom of the road OH, THE BICYCLE. It meant freedom as a kid, right? Oh, the fun we had zipping around curves and up and down hills and over bumps. We never forget that feeling. Or do we? My cousin and his family came out to visit a few summers ago. We had bikes for everyone and we lived in Old Town Fort Collins about a mile from the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant where we were headed. As we cruised (literally on our cruisers), I looked over and saw my cousin’s wife wearing a giant grin and pedaling faster. She hadn’t been on bicycle since childhood and had forgotten just how darn fun the contraptions are. I think that’s not uncommon. We ride our bikes as kids because they are our best bet for getting around but as soon as we get that drivers license, bam, the bike gets stuck in a corner of the garage never to emerge again until we donate it to Realities for Children’s Bikes for Tykes. And that’s so sad (not the Bikes for Tykes part but the stuck in a corner part), because a bicycle is a beautiful thing and has so much to offer us as we age. Let’s take the fun part. When you’re out on bike you are out there with the fresh breeze in your face and the smell of flowers filling your nose. You can easily say hi to Paul as he plays his guitar on the front porch or chat with Jackie as she’s walking to the farmers market. You get a little exercise. You get a little boost from interactions with your neighbors and friends. And you stay in touch with the whole thing—the changing seasons, today’s weather, birds and frogs, sun and clouds. When you’re driving around in your tin can with wheels, you just miss so much. And a bike is hard to beat for basic transportation. That quick run to the grocery store is sweet on a bike, and the parking is always right up front! If you’re a commuter, developing a bicycle routine could make you healthier and happier. You might find that you arrive at work energized by your physical activity. One of the challenges though, as we age, is that the classic bicycle might not be the best choice any more for our bodies or our energy levels. Kyle Moyer writes about alternative pedaling options that might suit your mind and body better. From batteryassisted bikes to recumbents to big-people tricycles, you can find something that will get you back out there laughing and having fun. Pedal on, Scott

Should you get a pet?

BESIDES COMPANIONSHIP AND unconditional love, scientific evidence claims pets keep owners more fit and healthy. They reduce the stress of a busy workday—they listen and keep secrets! They boost moods through love, relaxation and play. Pets also contribute to lower stress levels, depression, blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides. Furry pets, such as dogs, cats and farm animals, increase immunity. Fur collects germs and dirt; therefore, owners are exposed to allergens and

other minor diseases. A dog’s sense of smell can be taught to detect cancer from breath, urine, feces, under-skin tumors and diabetes A1C levels. Necessary upkeep includes daily walks—a constant exercise for both pet and owner. Friendly pet communities offer the chance for new friends. Pets assist in dealing with pain and chronic illnesses. They create a sense of a safe environment and, in some cases, have even saved a life.

Six reasons to downsize OVER TIME, WE’VE LEARNED “bigger is better.” But is that really true? Is your big house causing you stress and financial worries? Here are six reasons to consider selling that large home and downsizing. 1. R educe debt by buying smaller and possibly paying cash with proceeds from the big home sale. 2. I ncrease cash flow due to reduced utility bills and need for fewer frivolous goods—items that fill space rather than function. 3. D eclutter while moving and donate to those less fortunate. 4. S ave time and money on upkeep and maintenance. 5. C reate more time for family, friends, travel and enjoy a minimal, stream-lined life. 6. M inimize stress level with fewer responsibilities, smaller workload, increased cash and greater flexibility. Should you sell first, then purchase or purchase and then sell? Experts suggest sell first. Then invest the extra funds to pay cash for the house or reduce a mortgage.

WHETHER YOU CHOOSE SWEDISH, deep, sports, stone or trigger-point massage, you’ll get more than just relaxation out of a massage. Massage helps relieve pain in your body and chatter in your mind. People commonly seek out massage for neck and lower back pain. It also helps relieve stress, anxiety and insomnia, and can effectively treat headaches, TMJ and sports injuries. If you want to give massage a try, consider a commitment over 10 weeks to see real results. A study by the Clinical Journal of Pain showed that people who got 10 neck massages in 10 weeks experienced a 55percent improvement in pain and stiffness. Forget all the facts and consider the sheer joy of feeling a healing touch. A good massage can leave you feeling dazed, but in a good way. You’ll move in slow motion and your mind will be quiet. Just be careful backing your car out of the parking lot on your drive home.

Fight the dry: keeping skin healthy in the summer

ARID COLORADO IS A PROBLEM year-round for skin, which prefers to be plump with moisture. Add in the hot sun, dry sand and chlorinated pools of summer and your skin can get downright flaky and dry. Here’s how to combat dry, summer skin. At the top of your list should be wearing sunscreen and drinking a lot of water. Make it a habit to put on sunscreen first thing in the morning. The trick is remembering to reapply every two hours, and 30 minutes before going out in the sun. Also, get into a good day and evening routine with applying moisturizers. Hyaluronic acid is an ingredient to look for in facial creams because it keeps your skin hydrated and products with glycerin attract water to your face. If you are using topical vitamin A (retinol) cream such as Renova or Retin-A for wrinkles, good for you because it’s one of the most reliable ways to fight facial wrinkles. Yet, you must be extra vigilant with using sunscreen all day long or results could be the opposite of what you are hoping to achieve. If your skin is extra dry, find a moisturizer with shea butter, jojoba oil or cocoa butter. Get in the habit of exfoliating a few times a week—face and body—to remove dry, dead skin. That way, your skin will feel smoother and your moisturizers will work better.

Give to yourself by giving back

HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED HOW helping others has a slingshot effect? By helping someone feel better, you feel better, yourself. It’s not the reason you volunteer, but it’s a great side effect. If you have the time—or if you desire more purpose and meaning in your life—consider giving back. Volunteering is a great way to explore a passion or gain perspective on your own life. If you volunteer at a homeless shelter or with an at-risk child, you just might walk away feeling compassion for those different from you and grateful for what you have. As humans, we are wired to be communal and work together. Brain activity and

endorphins—the feel-good hormones—increase when we volunteer. It also has a practical side in that it can help you gain new skills, increase confidence and explore new career fields. Maybe you always wanted to be a curator or an art expert. Try volunteering in a museum. Maybe you wonder if substitute teaching is right for you. Volunteer in a classroom or as a tutor. Not sure where to start? Start with your local United Way. Flip through their volunteer resource guide for tons of opportunities under various categories from arts and culture to hunger and homelessness (https://uwaylc.org/Volunteer).

Can You Hear Me Now?

How the normal aging process affects your sense of hearing. Aging is a normal process in your life. Aging affects all aspects of your health, but what about your hearing? There are many causes of hearing loss including genetics, noise exposure, medications, medical conditions, ear diseases, head trauma, and aging. Presbycusis is hearing loss caused by the normal aging of the auditory system. This type of hearing loss happens gradually and in both ears at the same time. According to John Hopkins Medicine, 1 in 3 adults over 65 years of age has hearing loss. Most often, Presbycusis type of hearing loss affects the ability to hear high-pitched

noises such as a phone ringing or beeping of a microwave. As you age, all your genetic components and medical conditions age along with you. Hearing is no different. Hearing loss is more than just the ability to hear sounds and conversation. Hearing and brain health are directly correlated. Your cognitive decline happens naturally as you age but if you have hearing loss, the risk of cognitive decline happens faster. A thorough consultation and hearing evaluation is the only way to determine the percentage of hearing loss you have and what

could be causing this hearing loss. Treatment of age-related hearing loss is using hearing aids and other assistive listening devices. Today’s hearing aids are so sophisticated, they connect directly into an iPhone and TV can be easily transmitted to the aids through a TV box. Susan Baker is the owner and operator of Advanced Hearing Services in Fort Collins. She has been helping people with hearing loss and Tinnitus for the past 19 years. Take a hike

WE NORTHERN COLORADO RESIDENTS can get deep into nature and away from crowds and concrete within 30 minutes. A quick drive west can bring you to a trailhead offering a quick break from the hustle and bustle and an important catch-up with fresh air, fresh smells, and an elevated heart rate. East of I25, hikers can visit the Sanborn

Park, Bittersweet Park, or the Greeley Poudre River Trails. If you’re able to take a trip into the foothills west of Loveland and Fort Collins, hike along Devil’s Backbone, Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, Lory State Park, or drive up Highway 14 and walk along the Poudre River or many of the trails on the up the Poudre Canyon.

Dine al fresco WARM WEATHER IS FINALLY here and few things feel more like northern Colorado summer than patio dining. From calm backyard patios to exclusive-feeling rooftop decks, dine al fresco at these neighborhood favorites. In Greeley, Doug’s Diner, Coyote’s Southwestern Grill, and Fat Albert’s Restaurants have some of the best outdoor seating. Windsor boasts Chimney Park Bistro and the Hearth Restaurant and Pub. If you’re dining out in Loveland, check out Mo’Betta Gumbo, Wapiti Colorado Pub, or the Tilted Barrel Brew Pub. And, most places in Old Town, Fort Collins offer patio seating to soak up the sun while you dine: Restaurant 415, The Farmhouse at Jessup Farm, and Avogadro’s Number are well-liked. And, catching some live music, especially in the evening, is a safe assumption during the summer.

Hit the road THE DALAI LAMA SAYS, “Once a year, go some place you’ve never been before.” Plan a classic road trip this summer and reconnect with yourself, a loved one, or friends. A day-long road trip is the perfect chance to listen to the audio book you’ve had on your list, revisit travel games from childhood and, of course, visit a new and exciting place. Road trips break up routine and push us into unfamiliar spaces both emotionally and physically. New emotional space pushes us outside of our comfort zones as we expose ourselves to new people, places, customs, and communities. Road trips can turn on the introspective part of our brains. We learn how we improvise, react in different situations, appreciate beauty, adjust to changing altitude,

relate to people when we’re not stressed, and more. Northern Colorado is within an eight-hour drive from a number of national parks including Arches (Moab, Utah), Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming), and Grand Tetons National Park (Wyoming).

Beyond FRESH PRODUCE

CSAs support the communities that support them • LEA HANSON The first thing that comes to mind when we think of our local CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) is weekly, fresh produce. Those familiar with CSAs aren’t surprised to find that many offer foods beyond fruit and vegetables such as eggs, milk, meat, and honey. Northern Colorado farms continue to grow and we are finding our favorite CSAs are expanding offerings and opportunities for their members that reach into the realms of education, programs for food accessibility, service and volunteering. SERVICE AND VOLUNTEERING An increasing number of CSAs offer volunteering opportunities and “working memberships.” Even those with limited growing knowledge and experience can contribute to a community farm. For many, being outdoors, working with their hands, and getting dirty is a rare and exciting opportunity. Being a part of growing the food you consume and being a part of a team of farmers who do the same is uniquely satisfying. The Growing Project (www. thegrowingproject.org) believes good

24 |

Fifty&Better

food is a human right and aims to spread the knowledge of growing and preserving food to provide remedy the epidemic of food insecurity in Larimer County. They offer an array of volunteering opportunities and most volunteer hours are compensated with fresh produce. FOOD ACCESSIBILITY Food security is a growing concern in Larimer County. And, many who qualify to receive food assistance are not enrolled to do so. In 2016, the enrollment rate for federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits was only 40 percent of those eligible. In 2016, 21,798 (40 percent of those eligible) were enrolled in SNAP; in Weld County, 25,090 (53 percent of those eligible) were enrolled. It is clear that not all of our communities have equitable access to healthy food and there are many CSAs that want to change that. Studies show that both adults and children in low-income households that participate in cost-offset community supported agriculture consume more fruits and vegetables than members of low-income households who do not

have access to a CSA. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Many local CSAs, farms and related organizations offer training and education to community members who are interested in learning everything from the logistical skills of growing food to learning more about food accessibility as an issue of social justice. The Growing Project offers diverse programs for youth and adults alike including the Young Farmers Training Program, Teens for Food Justice, an Edible and Medicinal Weed Walk, and Foraging, Harvesting, and Processing of Wild Grains. In addition to offering traditional CSA memberships, Sproutin’ Up (www. sproutinup.com/) aims to improve the health, wellness, and job-readiness of under-resourced youth and families in northern Colorado by providing access to fresh produce while educating youth on healthy lifestyles and sustainable agricultural practices. The organization offers apprenticeship, entrepreneurship, and intern programs in addition to school gardens and summer camps.

IS A CSA MEMBERSHIP RIGHT FOR YOU? The spring harvest is upon us, and in many communities, the last call to sign up for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group is right around the corner. Most CSAs offer a few membership options (half or full share, weekly or biweekly pickup, etc.) and range in prices. But before making the leap and investing in a CSA, consider whether the program is right for you—and which farm is the right one for you to support. There are many pros and cons to weigh, and the summer can be an unexpected time, for you and that farm.

Pro: You’re supporting a local farmer sans middleman. Most CSA groups receive all their produce from one farm. Therefore, your contribution means a lot to the farm’s financial security, which can be so fragile and vulnerable to chance (weather conditions, slow days at the farmers market, etc.). By paying upfront, you’re ensuring the farm sales throughout the season. Con: You’re limited to that farm. What if that farm’s tomatoes get flea beetles? Or you find you don’t care for their bumper crop of cucumbers? Unfortunately, you’re beholden to those offerings once you join and most often aren’t offered an opportunity to give up your membership.

Pro: The food is fresh. CSAs are a literal farm-to-table option. Your food is typically harvested days or hours before pickup and is rarely grown with harmful fertilizers or preservatives.

Cons: You must be ready to use the food you get. You get what you get and when you get it. Sometimes you get only leafy greens and sometimes none. It’s a good idea to look into the basics of preserving food for those weeks when you receive too much of one type of food to avoid waste.

Pro: Try new, healthier foods. Even those of us who grow our own food already often don’t have space or capacity for large gardens. Most farmers often throw in crops you’re unfamiliar with, giving you delicious weekly surprises. Con: You might not like everything. Even if you don’t have picky eaters in your home, you may not like each type of item you receive in your weekly share. Or, you may not know how to prepare it in a way you can eat it. This may require some additional research and time on your part to learn a new food preparation skill.

Pro: It’s interactive. CSAs are often set up with a community feel. You have the opportunity to meet and get to know the farmers who run it as well as other members. While it may not be required, there is often opportunity to volunteer at the farm itself.

Con: There are requirements. As noted above, some CSAs require volunteer work. Ask questions about this and weigh the requirements against your time availability and interests. Once you’ve found a CSA in your area, joining is usually as simple as filling out your information on the group’s website or placing a phone call. You’ll often have to pay for your seasonal share upfront. Oftentimes, you’ll receive a welcome kit with information about the farm and the farmers you’re supporting, how you can get involved on the farm, and how the delivery schedule is structured. At this point, you sit back, relax, and wait for the food to roll in.

WHEN ASKED WHAT THEY LOVE about riding a bicycle, most people’s answers include that it provides freedom and it’s a fun way to exercise. As we age, the traditional bicycle may not be the best choice for our wheeled adventures, but luckily we have options. LAID BACK BIKES AND TRIKES One of the best options for individuals who need an alternative to a two-wheeled bike is a recumbent bicycle or tricycle. Recumbent cycles allow the rider to essentially sit in a seat with back

28 |

Fifty&Better

support while they ride, reclined to allow for a more comfortable riding experience. These cycles use traditional pedals or hand pedals to propel riders down their favorite trails or roadways. Rachel Shoemaker, who owns Rocky Mountain Recumbents with her husband Steve, says most of their customers are aged 45 and up. “We have lots of customers with physical limitations, bad backs, bad knees, joint replacements. Some customers are also looking for preventative maintenance.” She adds that they

Do you know...bicycles must yield to pedestrians? Do you know...Colorado law requires that at night you ride with a white front light and a red rear light or reflector? Do you know...you may use either arm to signal a right turn? Either point to the right with your right arm or raise your left arm in an “L” shape. Do you know...you must signal turns 100 feet in advance unless you need both hands to brake or control your bicycle? Do you know...if a motorist behaves aggressively or dangerously, you can dial *CSP (*277) from your cell phone to reach the Colorado State Patrol? You’ll need to provide the vehicle license plate number (mandatory), location and direction of travel, vehicle and driver description and a description of the aggressive behavior.

sell far more trikes than they do traditional two-wheeled recumbent cycles, as the trikes feel a lot like pedaled go-karts. As far as choosing a recumbent, Rachel says they want customers to come and ride everything they have in the shop to really get a feel for the different kind of riding experiences available, plus finding the right fit is important. Two-wheeled recumbents usually come in three sizes—small, medium and large. Trikes have one size frame, but the pedals adjust for riders of heights from 4 feet 8 inches to 6 feet 2 inches. For riders

looking for a little bit more oomph, they offer electrification for new or existing recumbents. To get yourself equipped with a good recumbent setup, look to spend anywhere from $1,800 to $2,500. Beyond the machine itself, a critical consideration with recumbent cycles (and all cycles) is safety. Since recumbent cycles have a low profile, their visibility to other vehicles can be compromised. Shoemaker says the key is to make yourself seen by flying bright colored flags, attaching flashing red lights at the back of the cycle and wearing bright clothing and helmets.

HIGH-VOLTAGE CYCLING If you prefer and can still ride a traditional bicycle, some new technologies have made pedaling easier on your body, specifically electric bicycles or e-bikes. E-bikes come in all shapes and styles, from comfy cruisers to full-suspension mountain bikes. Power wise, there are two main types of e-bikes, pedal assisted and throttled. With pedal assisted e-bikes, electric motors assist with the actual force needed to pedal a bike, lessening the effects on the joints and muscles. For throttle-assisted bikes,

Fifty&Better | 29

riders control a throttle, usually mounted on the handlebars, which they can use to aid in acceleration and cruising. E-bikes have come a long way as battery technology has developed. For range, e-bikes can go anywhere from 35 to 100 miles, depending on how often the electric assist is utilized. Some bikes have digital readouts and drive modes that allow riders to adjust how much assistance and range they want to dial in. E-bikes are also speed limited between 20-28mph for your safety and the safety of other riders and pedestrians. Some considerations need to be made with e-bikes, however. One factor is their weight. Battery packs and electric motors add some heft to the bikes, so lifting them onto a bike rack might be challenging. Additionally, many municipalities don’t allow electric vehicles on paved recreation trails, though that is changing. The best bet is to check on local laws and ordinances where you intend to ride. Meals on Wheels turns 50! Lynn U Nichols

IN JUNE, MEALS ON WHEELS turns 50 and Jane Repert has been there for the majority of those years—38 in all. She has seen changes in people, leadership and policies but one thing that hasn’t changed is her dedication to the people that Meals on Wheels serves. “Getting a hot meal delivered is sometimes the only interaction our elderly or home-bound clients have on a daily basis,” says Jane. “We deliver to the same people every week, which lets us create connections with our clients. I’ve made several life-long friends over the years.” Meals on Wheels (MOW) delivers 230 meals each day, five days a week around Fort Collins, thanks to 170+ volunteer drivers. The only requirements for home delivery are

“I’ve always been taught that volunteering is an important part of life.”

answering yes to just one of these three questions: Are you home-bound? Over age 62? Or disabled and unable to safely prepare meals? Poudre Valley Hospital makes meals in their kitchen and absorbs nearly half of the cost. Clients choose from two options on a regular rotating monthly menu, or they can request a vegetarian or renal-friendly meal. For clients who have difficulty chewing, MOW offers dental soft and pureed meals. “Meals are provided on a sliding scale, with the average cost to clients at $3.15 per meal. It costs the hospital $6.85 to make a meal resulting in an in-kind donation of over $150,000 in 2018,” says Glenda Shayne, Meals on Wheels Executive Director. Jane’s inspiration to volunteer with MOW came from her own mother, who volunteered for Mobile Meals in New Jersey while Jane was growing up. As a mom, Jane worked as a relief

occupational therapist—taking shifts when her husband Bill, an emergency room physician, was not working or on call. She brought her young children along on deliveries, inspiring her daughter to also spend time driving for MOW, rounding out three generations of volunteers. When not volunteering, Jane spends her time biking, gardening and painting—a passion she found later in life. “Jane is the ideal volunteer. She’s compassionate, patient and respectful to our clients. Her dedication to our mission shows every time she walks through the door and delivers a meal,” Shayne says. To learn more about Meals on Wheels visit www. mealsonwheelsfc.org. MOW is accepting volunteer drivers. Routes take about one hour a day, starting at 11am. MOW requires a once-a-week commitment for at least three months.

Better Balance

Bob Calhoun

Invest in the future Plant trees

IN THESE DAYS OF social and political divisiveness, and deep concern for our planet’s environment, an activity with which we all can agree and positively support is planting trees. Not only does tree planting benefit our world, but as we live out the last half, third, or even quarter of our lives, ‘keep planting trees’ is a wonderful and instructive metaphor about investing in and positively impacting the world long after our death. As the Arbor Day Foundations declares, planting trees is not “repose upon the past”, but “proposes for the future”. Since returning to Fort Collins in 1979, I have lived in three homes. Periodically I drive by the two houses in which I no longer live, looking upon trees I planted 40 and 30 years ago, marveling at their stature, the shade they provide, the beauty they offer. It’s a daily joy now to live among and tend to the trees at my current home of 27 years. Each in some way holds witness to my life story. A favorite spruce in our current yard arrived by mail after a donation some 25 years ago to the Arbor Day Foundation. Planted at the edge of the vegetable garden, I later transplanted this Colorado Spruce after it reached a height of three feet….and now I love looking west toward the foothills past this 30’ bright green beauty.

Much of my love for trees stems from watching my father. I remember at age 10 watching Dad plant spruces at our home in a new housing development in Michigan, how dedicated he was to ‘deep watering’ them overnight so they could thrive. At my 50th high school reunion two years ago, I drove by the old house, marveling at those towering spruces Dad planted 60 years ago. Trees pull our life story together. Back to the metaphor. In addition to literally planting trees, you can contribute in many ways to our community that will have long lasting impact. The opportunity to positively influence our world is never over until we take our last breath. If you are reading this, you most likely are involved in ways that will ‘offer shade for the future’….loving your grandchildren, volunteering at a school, being a member of a city of Fort Collins citizen advisory board, participating in a Habitat for Humanity project, helping the relocation

of immigrant families, visiting the jail, voting in elections, cleaning up the Poudre River, donating funds to an endowment fund for a worthy cause such as scholarships for students at CSU, and of course tending to the trees in your yard. Giving much of yourself, investment of time, money and love, knowing you most likely will not see the full fruition of your effort. Back to the trees. There is much trees teach us, such as “the advantages and benefits of working together”. Learn more by reading Peter Wohllenben’s book, The Hidden Life of Trees’. It’s a great read. As you look for ways to invest in the future, consider planting a tree or donating to an organization that plants trees. A friend of mine recently shared that her office in Fort Collins took a day off this past May to plant 100 trees! Trees last more than our lifetime. They will continue to clean the air, offer shade to young children and homes for nesting birds. If you haven’t lately, hug a tree. It will make your day.
