The whole shebang Feeling connected and interconnected
DURING THIS ISOLATING TIME, it becomes clear how social we humans are and also how connected we are. As the saying goes, no one is an island. We are all part of a vast, interconnected web. Much has been written about the Butterfly Effect, where a butterfly flaps its wings at just the right time and that affects the power of a storm on the other side of the world. And nothing demonstrates our interconnectedness like the current times. A microscopic virus mutates slightly in a part of China few of us has heard of, and someone becomes ill on the other side of the globe. We might note our lack of true independence by contemplating just how many people it takes to keep us “isolated” in our homes. Let’s say we have our groceries delivered. To grow that head of lettuce that’s in our bag required good soil, water, seeds, and someone to care for that with specialized tools thatyoung were made someone else, anothmanbyapproached melikely in ainparking er part of the world. ARE YOU READY TO spend some time outside? Here are some tips to spruce up your deck or patio. Choose a theme—Mediterranean, modern, rustic, beachy. Seating—Make it comfortable. Try built-in benches with storage, lounge chairs, pint-sized stools, floor pillows, a hammock or swing. Stick with durable furniture—wood or metal. Arrange furniture with a focal point—sofa, art, fireplace and/or rug. Lighting—String lights along the ceiling, walls or railing. Place lanterns on tables and floor. Add candles. Color—Create color with potted plants, tablecloths, placemats, throw pillows, cushions, rugs and/or afghans. Entertainment—Watch movies splashed against a wall or sheet. Mount a TV or speakers. Provide a game table. Accents—Consider a bar or a bar cart, tabletop fountain, brick fireplace, wall décor, fans, rugs and lighting. Install a firepit or chiminea. Add an awning or umbrella for shade.
Container gardens ADD AMBIENCE TO OUTDOOR living spaces with attractive containers and colorful plants. Use a large container for plant groupings and small pots for individual plants. Polyurethane foam, rot-resistant wood, plastic and ceramic glazed containers last longer and offer weather protection. Lighter colored pots keep roots and plants cooler. Use good potting mix. Don’t skimp on drainage. Fill each container with plants requiring similar light and moisture. Be sure to include a filler (fills in spaces), spiller (over the edge) and thriller (focal plant). Consider a trellis and climber vine in a pot against a wall. A pair of matching containers on either side of the front door welcomes guests. On the deck or patio, arrange pots on the ground, shelves or pedestals; mount them on windowsills or hang them. Arrange pots on stairways, terraces or tabletops. Group various sized containers holding individual plants together for special effect. Grow herbs in pots clustered together within easy reach of the kitchen.
Spaces to play, exercise, relax EVEN WITH RELAXED stay at home orders, we still spend more time at home. Rearrange your living spaces to include play, exercise and relaxation. •C reate a reading nook. Choose a quiet space filled with a comfortable chair, good lighting, stacks of books/ magazines and a side table. •D esignate a table for play. Equip it with cards, puzzles and board games. Or, gather paints, colored pencils, paper, fabric, scissors, glue, and silk flowers. Make special occasion cards, placemats or napkins. •B uild a simple indoor or outdoor home theater. Turn on your computer with your favorite movie. Borrow or purchase an inexpensive projector that connects to the computer. Use a sheet or wall for viewing. Snuggle up with popcorn and a drink. • Watch the skies for constellations and specific stars; enjoy the moon and meteor showers. •C lear a floor for dancing. Turn on the radio or play your favorite music. •S et up badminton or croquet in your yard.

Getting back to life with Covid-19
Kyle Hampton, DO
970-818-2280
arktosdirectcare.com 3938 JFK Parkway Fort Collins, CO
Colorado moved into the “Safer At Home” phase of reopening on April 27th and, as of this writing, that order expires on May 26th, 2020. The next planned phase is titled “Protect Our Neighbors” and is focused on a more normal social life, while still being protective against the spread of Covid-19. What does all of this mean though? Who is still at risk? What does the future look like? First off, we need to understand that these orders and timelines are a general guide and are flexible. If new case numbers begin to rise, we can go back to “Safer At Home” or even “Stay At Home” orders. We have to be ready to make adjustments to our lives as are necessary. We also need to be realistic with what our near future looks like with this pandemic. In reality, we are looking at many more months of precautions. Even with our modest control measures currently in place the medical community is expecting a peak for the pandemic to be around July. Then, its expected that we will continue to see cyclical periods of new cases for the next 12 to 18 months, until we can mass produce an effective and safe vaccine. It is unlikely that we will ever be able to eliminate this virus completely. We may see
small resurgences each fall and winter. We should be ready and willing to have plans for business closures as new waves can be identified. Our most vulnerable populations, those over 65 and people with chronic lung conditions, heart disease, or who are immunocompromised, need to adhere to more strict precautions and should try to practice “Stay At Home” as much as possible. The best way back to normal life is to have readily available testing for anyone who has symptoms or exposures and to be able to isolate and contact trace any positive cases. With many people being asymptomatic or even contagious prior to symptoms, we should expect waves of infections throughout the population. Our lives have been changed due to Covid-19 and the next year or two is going to be vastly different than what we are used to. However, together we will return to normal life. Please do your part in looking out for each other and our communities by following our guidelines for “Safer At Home” and “Protect Our Neighbors”. As a primary care physician, I can truly say that we here for you and we thank you for your resolve during these unique times.

Follow these tips to look your best. • Wear a solid color, not dark or bright white. Dress comfortably. Comb your hair and touch up facial hair. Wear heavier makeup, blot lipstick, darken eyebrows, blush cheeks and even your nose. • Test locations for a film area with your phone. Choose bright natural light facing a window. Otherwise illuminate your face with a raised shaded lamp behind the computer. No light from above or behind. Use a white bulb without yellow tint. • Choose a clean and simple background with no distractions. • Sit so shoulders are slightly visible. Leave a small space between your head and top of the picture. Keep hands out of sight. • Use a box or books to raise the computer so the camera is even with your hairline and you look up slightly. Look into the camera as you speak.

Your hearing healthcare is important, now more than ever. During the past few months, have you noticed how much of your hearing is needed for communication? With our recent pandemic and the stay-athome order, people are finding their communication might be straining due to hearing loss. Hearing health is not something to ignore. According to the Public Hearing Institute, hearing loss affects one in five people over the age of 60 … a total of 35 million Americans. It cuts across age, gender, economic strata, and location. Yet it is largely going unnoticed. But it should not be. Untreated hearing loss can have two serious impacts on your life. First, there is the loss of your hearing itself. As your hearing declines, you strain to hear conversations and you miss out on information. Life becomes that much more stressful and challenging. IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN HEARING
Advanced hearing loss is also
associated with a variety of serious medical conditions including: • Heart and cardiovascular disease: The negative influence of impaired cardiovascular health on both the peripheral and central auditory system has the potential to affect an individual’s capacity to hear. • Diabetes: Hearing loss is about twice as common in adults with diabetes. • Cognitive function, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease: Studies show that older people with hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia, and that hearing loss is associated with a faster rate of cognitive decline. • Depression and anxiety: Hearing loss can lead to isolation and other emotional conditions that can affect both quality of life and mental health. • Chronic kidney disease: Research has shown that people with moderate chronic kidney disease have a higher prevalence of hearing loss.
THE GOOD NEWS: IT’S TREATABLE.
Whether it is a cause or a symptom, the good news is that hearing loss is often treatable through hearing care. With a visit to our office, you can get an evaluation and find out whether modern hearing instruments can help you regain clearer, more natural hearing, and stay engaged with the world around you. Please call (970) 221-5249 to schedule your evaluation and consultation today. www.oticon.com

Time outdoors improves our mental and physical health
the great reconnection Scott Titterington
I PAUSE IN A GREEN MEADOW above Hewlitt Gulch in the Cache la Poudre Canyon on a foggy morning. Patches of blue sky and ridgelines appear then retreat as the mist shifts. Bird chirps interrupt the silence. And that’s when I get it. It’s quiet. No jet sounds, no distant truck brakes, no other people, just the chirping. I was about an hour into a morning run on sweet single track when I took that moment. Poets and songwriters have been trying to capture that feeling or whatever it is that we get when we’re out there surrounded by trees and hills and critters and fresh air. We connect to something, whatever it may be that just makes us feel better. But most of our lives we’re too busy buzzing around or stuck in front 24 |

of the TV. Time in nature is left for a different day. Well the coronavirus has moved that day to today. As events are cancelled, bars and restaurants shuttered, theaters silenced, what is a person to do? Well, it appears the answer for many of us is to head for the hills or rivers or lakes or any other natural space we can find. “We’re seeing record numbers of people recreating who didn’t have that chance because they were busy doing other things,” says Zoe Shark, public engagement manager and interim natural areas director. “And now they have the opportunity to remember the value that natural areas bring to us.” A minimum of 40 to 150 percent more people are visiting natural areas than previous records, Shark says, and
crowding is becoming a challenge. The busiest times are between 9am and 5pm on the weekends; the least crowded are early and late in the day. Fort Collins and Larimer County maintain webcams at the most popular trailheads so you can check before you leave home. You can also check trail conditions at www.nocotrailreport.org. “We’re all about getting people outdoors, so it’s wonderful,” Shark says. “It’s just so important for mental and physical health.” I returned from my little excursion that day refreshed and recharged, and my problems seemed just a little bit less consequential. I hope our rediscovered connection with our natural world persists long after the coronavirus is an old story that we pass down to the grandkids.

• Do not leave your home unless you absolutely need to, especially if you are not well. • Stay near home to recreate. Explore your backyard, take a walk, or bike ride around the block. • Be a party of one or two; keep groups small. Recreate only with people from your own household. • Limit your visits to public open spaces/parks; find trails closest to your home. • Bring your own personal hand sanitizer and use your restroom at home before leaving. • Stay on trails to avoid damage—step off, do not walk off. • Travel in a one-way direction, if possible. • Wear a cloth face-covering and stay 6 feet away from others who are not in your household. • Avoid crowds. Go early in the morning or late in the day. Check webcams before you go. • Be flexible. If you arrive at a trailhead and it’s full, think twice before getting out of the car. • Avoid unnecessary driving, risky recreational pursuits, or remote locations that may put a burden on first responders. On a rescue, physical distancing is not possible and offers asymptomatic people (individuals and rescuers) a window to unknowingly spread the virus. • Park only in designated parking spots. • Keep your dog leashed and under control; pack out its waste. • Be kind, have patience, and send a smile and wave along the trail. •C heck nocotrailreport.org for trail-condition warning and closure report. The ABCs of CBD The grocery store, gas stations, even Amazon, all sell CBD. How do I know what is good quality? What is the big fuss? Does it REALLY work on pain, stress, and sleep? Isn’t it all just marijuana? CBD (cannabidiol) products typically contain between 0%-0.3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and are from a variety of the cannabis plant commonly known as hemp. At this low amount of THC, there is no psychoactive feeling of being “stoned,” or “high.” Instead, you are accessing the medicinal qualities of the plant. CBD may provide relief from many symptoms including pain and stress, and it may provide a more restful night’s sleep. When considering any new intervention, it is prudent to speak with your doctor. Then, seek a good quality source, preferably a local store that specializes in CBD. These stores should have a copy of a Certificate Of Analysis (COA) for each product they carry which shows the third-party test results of what is in the product. Many of our customers find CBD to be effective when taking the strength

that works for them. For localized pain, a topical salve high in CBD and that has low or no THC typically provides relief with virtually no side effects. For wide-spread pain, stress, or a better night’s sleep, choose a low or no-THC gummy, gel capsule, or CBD oil. At Canna World Market in Loveland, we will take the time to listen, and provide the information you need to make your best decision. For a free CBD consultation, or to join us at one of our free events, call or find us on Facebook.

Not Out of the Woods “Not out of the woods”, Say the epidemiologists, not yet; The virus being with us much longer; Until a vaccine, they repeat, “We’re not out of the woods….” And those of us in this second half of life, Awarded a new classification of ‘most vulnerable’, However difficult it is to embrace, Finding ourselves hunkered down, Safe in place, if not from our own concern, Then by our children’s insistence…. Still deep in the woods Not yet out and about in what we took as normal, “Not for a long while most likely”, Epidemiologists again contending. Underlying medical conditions, A weakened immune system or cancer diagnosis, Throw those in the mix, and… It’s double down, triple vulnerability, And the sense we may just be hauled into court To explain any ‘risk’ taken. Where is this ‘out of the woods’ place that is not yet? On this journey are we ever out of the woods, Free from pathogens, viruses, bacteria, cancers, accidents, Forces of nature, insults, cultural persuasions, shared spaces, death? Are we not, like the trees of the forest, an integral part Of a complex cosmos of relationships Connected to each other despite our differences, Up against the odds together, vulnerable as one in this life?

Waiting to get out of the woods, even rushing… Could it be chasing an illusion of control, A great race back to ‘normal’, to busyness, Overlooking the very woods we inhabit, Yearning for lost or postponed distractions, Including the many that numb us, blind us, keep us From embracing the rich layers of life and spirit Deep in the woods……..? During the ‘great pause’ as some have called it, what is the gift? Where might lie opportunities to see more clearly, Love more dearly, be more conscious, more human, … breathe more deeply….? As second half of life folks Already on the path of transformation, A path of letting go, getting back to simple, Shifting from existing to living, This pandemic time offers the encouragement To keep evolving, making intentional adjustments To deeper living and consciousness. Enjoy the quiet moments, The long walks, conversations allowed to flower, Kind acknowledgements of neighbors, Connections with old souls from the past, Downsizing, closet cleaning, Offering a hand, accepting the hand held out toward you, Precious looks from your grandchild, even if through the computer screen. Appreciate and care for the ‘woods’, These woods that surround us. Allow them to be our refuge, To enliven us, nurture us, Hold ground for us, protect us, And yes, bury us.
