perspective Water fun try some new water adventures this summer When the kids were younger, we lived 10 miles up the Poudre Canyon. Summers were filled with days paddling the river and fishing at the little eddy just down from our house. Nothing beat hopping in a raft with the kids and friends and floating through the quiet canyon on a warm summer evening. We saw enough accidents that we were very respectful of the river. We wore wetsuits, helmets, life jackets and booties. We trained how to float safely down stream in the event of getting bumped out of the raft or ducky and we practiced throwing and grabbing a throw rope. We had loads of fun because we had taken the time to learn to be safe and learn the river. I remember one time in a big water year when I flipped the ducky in big waves and little Andy was in the front (until we flipped). That was a rough swim and our kayaking friend was at the bottom of the rapid ready to pick us up. We got back in the boat with most of the run still below us, including the main rapid of the run. Andy hung in there but he asked me to avoid as many bumps as I could, which was a marked change from his usually gung-ho attitude. We were both shaken a bit by that swim and it fully planted in our minds that the river is not a roller coaster at Disneyland. As we head into summer, we have several stories this month about water fun and safety. In a feature story, Lynn Nichols gives a great survey of all kinds of splish-splash activities throughout northern Colorado, from splash parks to pools to lakes and rivers. Theresa Baer explores learning to swim as a lifelong activity and a way to be safe. And Safe Kids looks at water safety from several different angles. And on another note, Lea Hanson examines stress and how it affects kids and families. She offers quick advice on how to make your house a stress-free zone. In our fast-paced, how-can-I-get-everythingdone world, taking a moment to address stress for the health threat that it is is certainly worth it. And finally, I’d like to welcome Tony Pennington and his childhood monster to Rocky Mountain Parent. He shares some humorous insights with us at the end of the magazine in our Time Out column. Have a wonderful, splish-splashy summer, Scott

as we grow

The power of pedaling

Kids gain freedom, self-confidence and have fun! LY NN U. NICHOLS

T

here’s nothing like the thrill of riding a bike fast down a hilly road, or mountain biking down a dirt trail. Bikes bring freedom, self-confidence and fun for kids. Summertime is prime time for learning to ride a bike to venture down neighborhood sidewalks, or taking family bike rides on area trails. Here are some tips on how to keep your kids safe and get the most out of riding. TEACH KIDS THE RULES OF THE ROAD Did you know one of the most common ways kids get hit by cars is wrong-way riding? One of the rules of the road is to ride on the right side of the road. Show them where to ride, and teach kids hand signals, the meaning of road signs and how to ride defensively— never assuming a driver sees them. Before letting them venture down your neighborhood street to a friend’s house, ride the route with them. Also, ban earbuds while riding! If your kids are younger than nine, encourage them to ride on sidewalks, bike trails or at the very least, bike lanes. That’s because their brains are not mature enough to navigate streets or measure speed of cars. GET A BIKE THAT FITS Don’t be tempted to let your baby grow into his older sibling’s bike before he’s ready. Bikes that are too big are often unwieldy, causing kids to struggle to keep upright and lose balance. Check that your child’s bike still fits and get a new one as needed. If you don’t have the means to afford a bike, reach out to area nonprofits that help equip kids with bikes. For example, older kids can earn a bike by working at the Bike Co-op in Fort Collins and Realities for Children has a Bike for Tykes program. STRAP ON A HELMET 8

| RMPARENT

Upcoming bike events and classes Helmets can make the difference between death and minimal injury. Wearing a helmet is vital, even when your child is merely going around the block. Maybe it is human nature to want to believe that our little corner of the world is safe, but statistics show otherwise: most bike accidents involving kids occur on quiet neighborhood streets and driveways. Having a hard time getting your kids to wear one? Start young. If kids always wear a helmet when in a bike trailer or riding, it will become second nature. Of course, wear one yourself. As kids grow older, pass along their kiddy helmets of years gone by and spring for new cool helmets. Explain that a helmet is like the keys to a car—it must be on before she can start up her bike. MAKE FAMILY RIDES A REGULAR EVENT Every city in northern Colorado has a trail map, so get one and vow to explore trails near home or throughout your city. Fort Collins boasts 285+ miles of trails. learn and live

Make a splash!

Learn to swim—a life skill for all THERESA BAER

T

emperatures are heating up and the kids are looking for something to do and want to cool off. We parents want them outside and active, so how about swimming? But, what if the kids can’t swim? Or perhaps we aren’t exactly adept with the activity? I understand. My husband and I are not good swimmers and we tend to avoid pools due to our own lack of skills. However, we are adamant about our kids learning to swim. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, drowning is a leading cause of injury-related death in children. With the Cache la Poudre and Big Thompson rivers running through our cities and sadly, stories every year about tragedies around those rivers, pools, lakes, canals and more, we want our children to be safe in the water. Swimming is the only sport that can save our childrens’ lives, and if water safety and learning to swim are essential life skills for children, perhaps it is equally important for us adults to invest the time and money to better our swimming skills as well. We would be safer, better prepared to help our children or others if necessary and would likely go more often and create many more positive memories with our children.

12

| RMPARENT

That sounds like a win-win, right? But wait, there’s more! In addition to ensuring safety, learning to swim offers many more advantages. Swimming is fun for people of all ages and abilities and children especially enjoy splashing around. It also provides several health benefits such as keeping hearts and lungs fit, improving strength, stamina, flexibility, balance and posture, and assisting the development of gross motor skills and coordination. Plus, swimming provides challenges and rewards, which builds self-confidence. It also opens up opportunities for other water sports that can only be done if one knows how to swim such as canoeing, kayaking, rafting, surfing, and triathlons.

If you’re considering swim lessons for your family, a quick search online yields options for beginner to advanced levels for ages six months and up at various price points and times to fit your budget and your schedules. You’ll find choices offered through city recreational aquatics programs, specialized swim businesses, or perhaps your health club that include group, semi-private and private classes from certified instructors. I even discovered one company that sends instructors to your home if you have a pool, and another that offers individual current pools with underwater cameras and mirrors so swimmers can easily see what they’re doing, learn the correct technique and can apply what they learn instantly. Swimming is a key life skill that’s fun and healthy. Don’t delay – jump on in to learn how to enjoy the activity as a family this summer and for years to come.

FREE OUTDOOR FITNESS COURT OPENS IN LOVELAND The City of Loveland Parks and Recreation Department partnered with UCHealth and the National Fitness Campaign to launch the new Fitness Court®, an outdoor bodyweight circuit training gym for people over 14 years of age. Located at Fairgrounds Park, 700 S. Railroad Ave., Loveland, it can be found between the Barnes Softball Complex and the Big Thompson River, east and across the river from the playground. Loveland is the first city in Colorado to join the National Fitness Campaign encouraging healthy lifestyles with world-class fitness that is free. Free classes are also provided

by UCHealth to introduce the court’s seven stations and the mobile app to interact with the training features. Details are available online at www. cityofloveland.org/departments/ fitness-court. ALL-IN-ONE RESOURCE FOR FOSTERING/ ADOPTING INFORMATION According to the Realities for Children website, nine Larimer County kids enter foster care each month and currently Larimer County needs 40 new foster homes to keep kids in their current communities. In response to that need, the nonprofit—which funds the needs of Larimer County children who have been abused, neglected or are at-risk—is offering a new resource

designed to create a one stop location for people to learn more about becoming a foster or adoptive parent. The website, www.fosterlarimerkids. org, also offers information on the valuable organizations that provide certification. To learn more, visit the web site or call 970-484-9090. MOSQUITO CONTROL With recent rains and warm temperatures, mosquito season is upon us and their numbers typically increase in July and August until cooler weather arrives. Keep you and your family safe from potentially debilitating and even deadly diseases when outdoors—especially in the evenings and early mornings when mosquitoes are most active—by wearing light colored or treated clothing including pants, long-sleeved shirts, socks, and shoes, and applying products with an effective repellant, such as DEET. Other deterrents include eliminating standing water on or near your property and ensuring that screens are in good repair to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. Many communities in northern Colorado utilize the services of Vector Disease Control International to monitor and determine the needs for abatement spraying. Vector is responsible for trapping adult mosquitoes at various locations as well as testing and treating water in

city-owned pools, parks, ponds and open spaces before mosquitoes hatch. Colorado trap data and spray zones and schedules can be found on the Vector web site at http://www.vdci. net/colorado. SUPPORT FOR GRANDPARENTS AND OTHER KIN RAISING KIN The Grand Family Coalition hosts support groups to provide a social network of those in similar situations to stay connected and positive. They offer quarterly social events, educational speakers, mentor programs, Peer-to-Peer support and soon, a bilingual group. Group meetings are held in Loveland on the second Thursday of every month from 11:30am–1:30pm at Mountain View Presbyterian Church, 2500 N. Garfield Avenue, and in Fort Collins on the fourth Thursday of every month from noon–2:30pm at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 5450 S. Lemay Avenue. To learn more about the Grand Family Coalition, please visit www.grandfamilycoalition.org or call 970-699-2837. RAFFLE FOR COLORADO ROCKIES PRESS CLUB TICKETS United Way of Weld County is raffling off four press club tickets to the Colorado Rockies-Arizona Diamondbacks game at Coors Field at 6:40pm on Monday, August 12.

Located in the second row on the second level next to the press box behind home plate, these premium seats also include all-you-can-eat food and dessert and non-alcoholic beverages. Raffle tickets are available online at www.unitedway-weld.org/ rockiesraffle until July 31 for $20 each. All proceeds from raffle sales support UWWC’s youth development programs encouraging kids to stay active, healthy and mentally strong. The winner will be notified on August. 2. LEAVE WILD ANIMALS ALONE The safest way to protect humans, pets, and wildlife is to leave wild animals alone. Wild animals can carry a variety of diseases that can be fatal such as rabies and tularemia. Teach your children to observe rabbits, foxes, raccoons, skunks, coyotes and bats from a distance–even if it looks to be an orphaned baby. They should notify an adult if a wild animal is nearby or if they are bitten or scratched. Always wash hands with soap and running water after working or playing outside. Keep your pet and livestock vaccinations current. Discourage wild animals from coming around by eliminating potential food sources: Avoid feeding pets outdoors, close pet doors at night, and secure garbage cans and food bins. If you find what appears to be a sick, injured or orphaned wild animal, contact your local Animal Control or veterinary office for assistance.

healthy living

Create a calm, relaxing home Practice stress management skills

LEA HANSON

A

s many parents will attest, home, sweet home isn’t always a stress-free zone. Stress at home is certainly normal and all families experience it. A noisy environment, an unhappy spouse, financial worries, or even mundane domestic duties such as doing the laundry or mowing the lawn are things most families feel stress around and don’t necessarily manifest in unhealthy ways. However, not all life stressors should be taken lightly; in fact, too much stress or worries that are deep and ongoing—often referred to as toxic stress—can actually end up manifesting in psychological and physical disorders for both kids and caregivers. Colleen Nelson, MA, LPC, EMDR of CNelson Counseling LLC (www.cnelsoncounselingllc. com) says it’s important to know the difference between normal and healthy everyday stress and stress that can cause longer term problems for our kids. “Good stressors teach kids a lesson and help them grow,” Nelson says, while “bad stressors feel insurmountable.” SYMPTOMS OF STRESS Recognizing that you’re experiencing stress is the first step toward managing it. Nelson says, “Stress affects our body, brain and our mind and children show us these signs in each of these areas.” The following are some common symptoms for kids: • Physical signs: Headaches, changes in appetite, stomachaches, and trouble sleeping. • Emotional signs: Feeling overwhelmed, being distracted, having nightmares, or feeling unable to cope. • Behavioral signs: Irritability, anger/ aggression, social isolation, or loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed.

16

| RMPARENT

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME A HAVEN Nelson says role modeling is the more significant way parents can teach kids to alleviate stress on their own. She says, “Kids need to see adults handle stress by taking a break or walking away from a seemingly impossible situation. They need to witness emotional selfregulation such as deep breaths, talking it through, and asking for support.” EXPRESS YOURSELF Learning healthy communication that involves using words to describe feelings is essential for kids as well as adults. Help your kids learn feeling words as well as the confidence to use them. CREATE NO-SCREEN TIME Screen time is part of our world, Nelson says, but it significantly increases the stress level in a family. “Having regular no-screen time breaks to encourage self-care and emotional regulation will help the whole family feel less stressed,” she adds.

IDENTIFY STRESS-MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES Find relaxing activities your family enjoys and weave them into your daily routines. Examples include meditating, doing yoga, knitting, listening to music or gardening. PRIORITIZE FUN Have fun together as a family regularly and without screens. Showing your kids that fun and relaxation is important will teach them tools to prioritize leisure as they get older. MAKE HOME CALM AND SHAME-FREE Nelson says, “Slow down and ask questions and provide each member time to answer without feeling like a burden or the need to be rushed.” However, sometimes the stressors we experience at home are too heavy to be managed alone. If your family needs support and guidance when it comes to managing stress, it’s never too late to ask a professional.

E N J O Y WAT E R SPORTS WHILE FOLLOWING SAFETY TIPS JoAnn Herkenhoff

Get wet! S A F E LY

F

or many of us, summer breaks are synonymous with swimming and water sports. And with the rising interest in paddle boarding and boating (including kayaks, canoes and motorboats), practicing safety in and around water is crucial. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one in five drownings are children age 14 and younger. And for every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency care for their injuries. More than half of those who receive emergency care will require a hospital stay or be transferred to another facility for extended care.

18

| RMPARENT

These injuries can cause severe brain damage, potentially contributing to long-term disabilities including memory loss, learning disabilities, and permanent loss of basic functions. Practice these safety tips to keep your kids—and yourself— safe this summer. WEAR LIFE JACKETS When around open water, always wear a properly-fitted life jacket. First, verify size according to the weight parameters indicated on the inside of the life jacket. To ensure that it fits properly, raise both arms above the head

Essential skills for water safet y Check that your child develops these water survival skills: • Can step or jump into water over their heads and return to the surface • Can float or tread water for one minute • Can turn around in a full circle and find an exit • Can swim 25 yards to exit the water. If in a pool, be able to exit without using the ladder.

(in a “touchdown” signal); if the life jacket hits the chin or ears, tighten the straps. If they cannot be tightened, the life jacket might be too big. TAKE SWIM LESSONS Municipalities offer a plethora of swimming lessons to give your kids the skills and confidence they need to safely participate in water recreation. Due to developmental variations in kids, as well as varying levels of readiness, consult with an instructor to help you decide when the time is right and what level of enrollment is appropriate for your child. Many programs offer scholarships for those who meet certain income guidelines. It’s a smart investment in your kids’ safety, and they might just meet a new friend! TEACH SAFETY Teach your children that swimming in open water is very different than swimming in a pool. They need to be cognizant of current and undertows, uneven surfaces, and changing weather. Maintain visual contact with your kids at all times when they are in the water, and keep younger children within arm’s reach. Make sure that you—or someone you have delegated to watch the kids—are free from distraction. Drowning is silent, unlike what we see in the movies, and happens

very quickly, so you need to able to respond immediately. AVOID HYPOTHERMIA Infants and children are more susceptible to hypothermia. Pack extra clothes to ensure you always have dry layers for your little ones. Observe their behavior in the water and immediately when they get out for signs of shivering and/or blue lips. Remember that kids won’t always admit to discomfort for fear of being pulled away from the fun, so assure them that they can get back in the action once they warm up! CREATE SAFE ENVIRONMENTS The majority of drowning victims never intended to get into the water, pointing out how critical it is to create safe environments around water. A large proportion of water accidents involve alcohol consumption. To keep your kids and yourself safe, never mix alcohol and water, and if you’re around someone who does, consider choosing to boat/swim without them. LEARN CPR We’re all busy. You juggle family and work, home responsibilities and vacations. But you should find the time to learn CPR. You could save a life one day. And even if the opportunity to intervene never presents itself, having the knowledge and skills

gives you tremendous peace of mind. The training is quite accessible and affordable; local hospitals, fire departments and recreation departments offer CPR training. And while we’re on the subject of water safety, you could learn water rescue techniques, as well. As a parent, you know the best learning modality is modeling. Always consider that your behavior has a good chance of being “picked up” by your kids. Act accordingly by practicing the behaviors you want your kids to exhibit, from wearing your life jacket to learning the skills necessary to be safe around water. Safe Kids Larimer County works to prevent accidental childhood injury, the number one cause of death for children in the United States. Its members include UCHealth EMS, Poudre Fire Authority, Colorado State Patrol and many others. Safe Kids Larimer County is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing accidental injury. Safe Kids Larimer County was founded in 1999 and is led by UCHealth. For more information, visit safekids. org or www.sklarimer.org. JoAnn Herkenhoff is a Community Health Educator at UCHealth.

Ways to get wet! Water fun in NOCO

for the whole family

Lynn U Nichols

ummer is heating up and the kids are getting restless. It’s time for some outdoor water fun! Maybe you’d love the chance to swim, get in a boat or try out paddle boarding, but you are on a budget. Don’t fret. You’ve got options, and many are free. Consider this: You have just one hour between sports events and everyone is hot and grumpy. What do you do? Pack swimsuits, a lunch and head to a nearby splash park for a quick soak and bite between practices or games. Maybe you crave adventure. Take a road trip and check out what a nearby city offers in the way of pools and beaches. You’ll be surprised by the variety. If you want an adventure in nature and you feel like splurging, try whitewater rafting on the Poudre River or rent a speedboat, pontoon or paddle board on Carter Lake or Horsetooth Reservoir. Or, if it’s oldfashioned fun you want, get some tubes at a tire store and tube the Poudre River near downtown Fort Collins and take a turn on the rope swing. Whatever you are craving, it’s 20

here. Take the summer challenge and try a new water destination each week until school starts. There are more adventures than there are weeks left, so grab your suits and sand buckets and get going. SPLASH PARKS Splash Parks are a great way for young kids to run around and cool off. POOLS

FORT COLLINS

City Park Pool 1500 W Mulberry St. https://www.fcgov.com/recreation/citypark-pool This large pool complete with two slides and a lazy river is located next to Sheldon Lake at City Park. It costs a little more than other NOCO pools, but it also offers more. It even lets dogs swim during its end-of-year Pooch Plunge. Twice the water fun: Sheldon Lake offers paddle board rentals by the hour. Neighborhood Pools www.splashpoolservices.com/ neighborhood-pools/ There are over 20 neighborhood pools spread across Fort Collins. Some require you live in the neighborhood, others welcome outsiders to join for the season or to sign up for swim lessons. LOVELAND

FORT COLLINS

Dixon Reservoir, etc. www.fcgov.com/naturalareas Dixon offers fishing and wooded walking trails. No swimming allowed, but ample fishing. Other fishing spots include the ponds along the Poudre River—North Shields Ponds, Riverbend Ponds, Kingfisher Pond, Cattail Chorus and Arapahoe Bend Natural Area. LOVELAND

Rent all types of boats including jet skis at Carter Lake Marina www. carterlakemarina.com. Tip: Rental rates are much more reasonable here than at Horsetooth. You can also rent paddleboards. Boyd Lake 3720 N County Rd. 11-C www.cpw.state.co.us Likely the largest swim beach in NOCO. Includes a large snack bar. The lake welcomes fishing and boating, but does not offer boat rentals.

Lake Loveland 2626 N. Taft Avenue in North Lake Park www.cityofloveland.org Offers a free beach and picnic area. WINDSOR

Windsor Lake 100 N. 5th Street www.windsorgov.com/293/Windsor-Lake Swim at the beach for free and try out a kayak, paddleboard, aqua trykes or canoe. Mix it up and hike the 2.25-mile lake trail. Located in Boardwalk Park. RIVER FUN For the adventurous at heart, get wet in the Poudre River! Your main options are whitewater rafting, which comes with a price tag, or tubing, which is free. Either way, you are bound to enjoy your day. WHITEWATER RAFTING There are various outfitters to choose from, offering half-day trips from beginner to advanced. Some also offer kayak lessons and fly-fishing adventures. • A Wanderlust Adventure www.awanderlustadventure.com • Mountain Whitewater and Paddlers Pub www.raftmw.com • Rocky Mountain Adventures www.shoprma.com TUBING THE POUDRE RIVER For a mellow experience, tube the Poudre River in Fort Collins, putting in at the parking lot at Shields Street just north of where it crosses the river. Tube to Legacy Park, exit and try your hand at the rope swing. Warning: You must exit when you come to a spillway. Under no circumstances should you attempt to go over it. Signs are now posted warning tubers after deaths occurred in previous seasons. This float is a little over an hour, depending on flow. Wear a life vest and closed toe shoes. Officials from Poudre Fire Authority do not recommend you tube the river. If you do, tube at your own risk and do so in the calmer months of July and August.

poudre school district news Graduates share roses with significant supporters

A rose for a mother, whose unconditional love and support since birth got her now-grown baby boy to the stage. A rose for a father, whose daughter loves him deeply and unconditionally, despite the recent stains on their relationship. Two roses for two grandmothers, who woke their granddaughter each day and made sure she got to school. Such were the authentic and moving stories shared during Centennial High School’s 2019 commencement ceremony. In following tradition, graduates gave away two roses to people who helped them in their often difficult, winding and sometimes disjointed journeys to earn their high school diploma. AT FORT COLLINS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION, TRADITION AND INSPIRATION ABOUND Every single person gathered in Moby Arena to celebrate the Fort Collins High School’s class of 2019 was an inspiration. They are all to be appreciated. During a ceremony steeped in tradition, graduates took either a yellow or purple rose as they accepted their diplomas, the key to their next steps in life. 26

FOSSIL RIDGE GRADUATES STEP FORWARD TO CHANGE THE WORLD “Once a SaberCat, always a SaberCat.” Though the Class of 2019 will no longer Grace the halls of Fossil Ridge High School, their collective footsteps, ideas and words have left a lasting impression for generations to come. Respect, integrity, and kindness will get them through whatever comes next, and we know each student will go forth and change our community for the better. POLARIS GRADUATES HIGHLIGHT ADVENTURE AND CONNECTIONS AS A KEY PART OF THEIR EXPERIENCE As Polaris Expeditionary Learning School graduates spoke of their time in high school, they told stories of adventures, deep learning, and meaningful friendships. These students spoke about learning the proper use of a comma from the same teacher who worked with them to become certified scuba divers before they set off to restore coral reefs in Florida. On every adventure trip, they watched the sun go down together; and at the graduation ceremony, they said they were watching the sun once again dip beneath the horizon on their high school journeys.

POUDRE COMMUNITY ACADEMY GRADUATES CELEBRATE THEIR DIPLOMAS AND RISING TO LIFE CHALLENGES When Poudre Community Academy Principal Troy Krotz spoke to the school’s graduating class, he spoke of the students’ triumph, grit and compassion. “As you know, life is not easy, and accomplishments like this are worth fighting for,” he said. “Regardless of the reasons you came to PCA, I’m glad that we found one another.” he said. Every person deserves to graduate with a diploma—whether they’re 17 or 27, he told the crowd of beaming graduates, family members and friends. POUDRE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES SHARE MESSAGES OF GRATITUDE DURING COMMENCEMENT In Poudre High School community fashion, the Impala graduates stopped during their commencement ceremony to take part in a “mass expression of gratitude,” sending texts to the family and friends who helped them get to this day. Four years ago, they walked through Poudre’s doors as brave 14and 15-year-olds who knew they would leave a mark. Leave a mark they have,

said PHS Principal Kathy Mackay, sharing a long and impressive list of ways the graduates helped others, broke glass ceilings, made their voices heard, and so much more. POUDRE GLOBAL ACADEMY GRADUATES REFLECT ON THEIR JOURNEYS The class of 16 students rose from their seats and turned to face the applauding crowd of parents, grandparents, friends, and other family members. “I have loved my school, and it has loved me back,” class Valedictorian Courtney Norris said with grace and heart. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES FOCUS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY Going forward, Rocky Mountain Principal Dr. Craig Woodall told the 2019 graduating class that he wants them to be better than great. “I want you to be good,” he said during the Saturday morning commencement ceremony. Lobos, he said, are just different—in the way they compete, support one another and hold themselves in the community. That is, after all, the Lobo Way. This class of graduates have suffered great loss but came together, amid it all.

time out The fine art of misdirection Negotiating with children

TONY PENNINGTON

I

t is rare when a quote of fiction accurately sums up a life experience or philosophy. I recently experienced such a moment while reading Canadian novelist Miriam Toews’ The Flying Troutmans. In the story, Hattie, the protagonist, says, “Conversing with children is a fine art … An art form that demands large amounts of both honesty and misdirection.” While I trend toward honesty, my father and son are masters of misdirection. My dad was not one to waste words. Rather than invest and explore an open dialogue when presented with questions, he would respond with, “Go ask your mother.” On one rare occasion, he was trapped and forced to engage with a crying 4 year-old. My older brother had convinced me there was a monster under our bunk beds, and since he had the top bunk, he was safe. My imagination explored the many ways I was about to die. My brother explored the idea of his own room, loudly. It did not take long for the tears to overwhelm me and send me into my parents room. Mom was in the shower and dad was perched on the bed with his briefcase open studying documents for a presentation in the morning, I assume. “Dad! There is a monster under my bed,” I said between sobs. Without hesitation or putting his paperwork down, my dad, became a storybook hero, but only for a moment. “I know,” he responded easing my fears and anxiety. I never loved him more. Then he crushed me, completely. “The monster works for me,” he continued. “If you made it this far, then he isn’t doing his job. Go back to your room and tell him he is fired. I am going monster shopping in the morning.” On my way back to the room, all I could think about was the monster 42

and if he had a family? What would happen to his family if he lost his job? From the doorway, I struck a bargain with the monster. If he promised not to eat me, I would stay in my bed, and he could keep his job. I took his silence as a tacit agreement. I went back into my parents’ room, announced the conditions of the contract and never dealt with night terrors again. Dad operated on a Houdini level of misdirection. I do not. Like me, my son has had a few episodes with monsters. My first response was to mimic my father, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Instead, I tried reason. And all reason gave me was a bad back from sleeping on a twin bed with my son and a menagerie of stuffed animals. This would be only one of the many times reason has failed me as a parent. It seems misdirection skipped a generation,

because my son comes by it naturally. Grayson’s drink of choice is chocolate milk. We have had to limit his intake for fear of mass shortages in northern Colorado. He knows there is a fixed amount allowed per day, but he is determined and always looking for a workaround. Which is how I came to find my child absent of clothes clutching a half-gallon jug of chocolate milk. “Why are you naked?” “Will you help me get some chocolate milk?” “You’re naked!” “So, are you going to help me or not?” He stood there fearless of any impending repercussions. I became that 4-year-old walking to his room to confront a monster, but this time I was a 40 year-old man going to the cabinet for a cup, laughing. Again, I had been misdirected.
