L
ocal districts are preparing for a successful 2012-13 school year. School start dates, program additions and new staff members are just a few of the changes going into effect for the coming year. Read on for important information pertaining to parents of school-agers.
Poudre School District School start dates
Many PSD schools will have staggered start dates in August. You can find first day of school information by visiting the school’s website or by calling your child’s school in August. School start and end times are scheduled to remain the same for the 2012-13 school year. You can find the school start and end times posted on the PSD website at www. psdschools.org. Mill levy and bond
This summer, projects funded by the 2010 Bond Fund valued at nearly $34 million were scheduled to be completed at 32 PSD sites. Major renovation projects were completed at Fort Collins High School, Poudre High School and Rocky Mountain High School as well as some of the middle and elementary schools. The renovations focused on improving the environmental comfort of classrooms, enhancing building security, increasing energy efficiency as well as renewing building infrastructure. The entire list of school-by-school bond projects, budget outline and project status updates can be found at www.psdschools.org under Quick Links, 2010 Mill Levy & Bond. Visit this webpage often, as project managers will be providing timelines and updates as they become available.
PSD’s Johnson Elementary students enjoy the challenges of the rock-climbing wall at their school.
Concurrent enrollment opportunities for high school students
Increase to school breakfast and lunch prices
Concurrent enrollment, offered at all PSD high schools, allows high school students to enroll in college courses and high school classes simultaneously. Concurrent enrollment gives students
an opportunity to graduate from high school with college credits and accelerates their progress toward earning advanced degrees and entering the working world. Colorado statute requires districts to pay tuition for credit at a community college for concurrent enrollment classes that students complete as part of their four-year high school plan or ICAP (Individual Career Academic Plan). $200,000 in mill-levy dollars will allow for more than 4,000 college credits for students. Mill-levy dollars will also allow for more planning with Front Range Community College and Colorado State University, resulting in more opportunities for students at PSD high schools.
The elementary and secondary fullprice-breakfast fee has increased by $.10 for the 2012-13 school year. New full-priced/reduced-priced meal fees are as follows:
| RMPARENT | PROGRAM & ACTIVITY GUIDE
Breakfast Student: $1.25 Reduced & free: $0 Lunch Student (K-5): $2.15 Student (6-12): $2.40 Reduced (3-12): $0.40 Reduced (PK-2): $0 Free: $0 PSD continues to offer computer access at Walmart
You can access PSD information at a computer in the Walmart Supercenter, 1250 E. Magnolia, Fort Collins. The PSD computer, which is available during regular business hours, provides access to the PSD website, which includes the latest district news and events, as well as information about school registration, bus services, calendars and district policies. The website also provides access to specific information about your child through the Parent Landing page. This computer does not have access to outside e-mail or Internet sites beyond the PSD website. The Walmart

Supercenter is partnering with the district on this project. New IB candidate schools
Cache La Poudre Elementary, Cache La Poudre Middle School and Riffenburgh Elementary have all been granted candidate-school status for the International Baccaulaureate Programmes for the 2012-13 school year. The IB programs are designed to develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. For more information on IB, please visit www.ibo.org. Other IB schools in Poudre School District include Bennett, Dunn and McGraw Elementaries; Lesher and Lincoln Middle Schools and Poudre High School. Interim superintendent named
The Poudre School District Board of Education named Dr. Nancy Wright as its interim superintendent Wednesday, June 27. Wright, who served as PSD’s interim superintendent in 2004, replaces Dr. Jerry Wilson, who resigned in June to accept a superintendent position in Maryland. Several Board members noted that Wright’s experience as a superintendent, her knowledge of policy governance, passion for education, collaborative management style and positive communication skills would help PSD successfully navigate this transition year. Wright will now begin negotiations with the board regarding a contract.

Thompson School District School start dates
First days of school for the district will be as follows:
• Grades K-5: Aug. 28 • Grades 6 and 9 (transition): Aug. 24 • All other grades 6-12: Aug. 27 • Elementary testing for grades K-5 will be held on Aug. 24 and Aug. 27
Back to School publication
The district will post its Back to School publication online this year at www. thompsonschools.org at the end of July. The publication will include essential information needed to prepare for the start of school including registration information, school start times and program details. A limited number of printed copies of the Back to School publication short version will be available at the schools, Loveland and Berthoud libraries and the Loveland and
Berthoud Chambers of Commerce. Community involvement
The district continues to work toward the goals of its Vision 2020 strategic plan and use of a balanced scorecard to monitor results and progress. Scores of partnerships with businesses, organizations and individuals enrich our learning environment for our students every year. District recognition
One of the most significant recognitions for the district is its lead role in the Colorado Legacy Foundation’s integration project with four other school districts. This multimillion-dollar grant will engage hundreds of educators and others to find ways to better integrate curriculum and opportunities for students in the state of Colorado. Berthoud High School was recognized this year as one of the top high schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Thompson School District starts the 2012-13 school year with high hopes for continued improvement on

state TCAP scores. The district made many strides in its state testing and increased its graduation rate. TSD had two of the highest performing elementary schools in the state and two that had among the highest improvements as well. In acuity tests, TSD had seven grade levels that showed a significant increase in the percentage of students meeting grade level benchmarks in literacy. In math, four grade levels showed a significant increase. Overall, TSD schools were stellar in their extracurricular performances, whether it be sports, music, Odyssey of the Mind or robotics. Three district teams ranked at the Vex World Robotics Championships during the spring. Thompson increased its number to 10 schools designated as No Place for Hate Schools by the Anti-Defamation League. More than 100 middle and high school students attended a youth leadership conference in the spring to help them become leaders this year in their continued efforts to stop bullying and support diversity among students. No Place for Hate aligns the Positive Behavior and Intervention Support program that is in place at all of the schools. PBiS is designed to establish and maintain effective school environments that maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence of all learners. Having PBiS districtwide provides consistency from school to school while allowing each school to create a structure that best suits its needs. New program
This year, Thompson School District has absorbed local administration of the Options Program for home-schooled and unschooled students. The program had been operated through Aurora Public Schools since 1998. The new name for the program is Loveland/Berthoud Enrichment Access Program or LEAP. LEAP joins the district’s Innovation Lab in providing an enrichment opportunity for home-schooled and unschooled students. Unschooled students are defined as those students allowed to learn through natural life experiences, including work and social experiences and exploration, differing from the traditional learning 12
structure and curriculum. LEAP is held one day a week, on Thursdays, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church. The Innovation Lab’s main point of entry will be located at 320 E. Third Street in downtown Loveland. Ferguson High School will also serve as a point of entry. Students are expected to complete at least 90 hours of work by the end of the first semester. There will be many sites that will host student learning throughout the Loveland community. Teachers, administrators and support staff for LEAP are well trained and dedicated to educational excellence outside of the traditional school setting, says Judy Skupa, interim superintendent in the Thompson School District. Information online
Thompson will continue the process started last year of distributing noncurricular materials from nonprofit agencies and organizations online. Materials regarding events and activities for youth in the Loveland, Berthoud and Fort Collins areas will no longer be distributed by paper through the schools to students’ homes, with some exceptions. Organizations may submit listings to RM Parent Magazine for its Program & Activity Guide, which is published in August, January, and April. Individual notices will now be posted on the district website’s Friday Folder at www.thompsonschools.org. There will also be a link from participating school websites to the district site. All approved materials will be posted on the Friday Folder page with a link to more information. These materials should be limited to events and activities aimed at youth. The district continues to disallow marketing of materials from for-profit organizations. All materials posted must be approved and organizations must have a nonprofit status. Requests must be turned in on the provided form no sooner than two weeks before desired posting time. School or site postings must still go through the approval process. The request form also contains other possible options for disseminating information to families about youth activities and events.

Career exploration and preparation “Pathways” in high school
Beginning in middle school, District 6 students will receive information on college and careers, and how their high school classes can help them reach their future goals. When they reach high school, students will have a choice of 13 Career Pathways to help guide their class selections. Career Pathways are big picture industries, such as health care, public safety, natural resources and construction. District 6 schools offer specialized 21st century programs and classes in these Career Pathways. Here are just three examples: Banner/NCMC Health Science Academy:
Students thinking about a career as a doctor, nurse or medical technician 16
might consider this four-year program housed at Greeley Central High School to prepare themselves for their next step. Students graduating from this program can earn a high school diploma and a medical certification such as nurses’ assistant, phlebotomist or emergency medical technician. STEM & Academy of Engineering: The
STEM program at Northridge High School is designed to meet the interests of students with a passion for science, technology, engineering, or math. The Academy of Engineering, a part of STEM, has earned a prestigious certification from the National Academy Foundation—one of just three schools in Colorado and 16 nationwide to have this honor. International Baccalaureate: The world-
renowned IB program at Greeley West High School is designed to prepare students for entry into worldwide colleges and universities through rigorous and challenging coursework, global perspectives, and critical understanding of the Theory of Knowledge. Middle school reform
In 2012-13, District 6 middle schools will be shaking things up in order to boost academic achievement and improve school climate. Core academic classes will be longer. Advanced students will be allowed to jump ahead to higher level classes and meet with a Gifted-andTalented Education facilitator every other week. Students who are behind will participate in targeted acceleration classes. Athletics will be expanded through a partnership with the City of Greeley. All students will have a weekly advisement period that includes goal setting, grade checks, career and academic planning, and positive behavior supports. Middle schools will have an early-release each Monday, as the elementary schools currently have, so that teachers can have more planning and professional development time. The goal is for all students to take and pass Algebra and Pre-AP Literacy before they leave middle school. Boosting technology speed and access in schools

Robins comes to Greeley from Adams County District 14, where she has been a principal and assistant principal at several middle and high schools. Lazlo Hunt will be the principal at Scott Elementary School. Hunt has extensive experience in curriculum, instruction and special education. Before working in Greeley as a special education coordinator, he worked in Poudre School District and in Keenesburg. Anthony Asmus is taking the helm at Centennial Elementary School. Asmus was an assistant principal at Brentwood Middle School during the previous school year. Larry Green, currently the assistant principal at Jefferson High School, will step up into the lead principal position at the school starting this August.

HORSES OPEN DOORS FOR AT-R ISK
YOUTH W
e are thrilled to announce that Lincoln Middle School received a significant grant from Bohemian Foundation to kick off the “Open Door Project.” This is a collaborative project between the school and local businesses to support Lincoln’s “at risk” kids. Two equine assisted life skills coaches, Pia Jansen and Jill Cantor Lee, will be working with Lincoln counselor Jose Sandoval to help the kids. A herd of seven horses and three donkeys will also co-facilitate their efforts. This will be the team’s third year working with students to develop critical life skills needed to be productive members of society. They will be using proven strategies in which the students access their inner world by interacting with the natural world. The horses and donkeys will guide students to use their personal power to build peaceful relationships, self-esteem, and empathy. They will learn how different behaviors illicit different responses from the horses and in turn, how this relates to relationships in school and at home. Lessons learned in the pasture will then be brought into the school as the two coaches and counselor work with the
students in the classroom. What’s unique about this year’s efforts is that we will be asking local business to provide sponsorship for the kids. Sponsorship will include financial and/or moral support for the equine assisted life skills coaching, and business literally opening their doors to the kids. They will host their student for lunch, place a picture of them on their lobby wall, and give them a clear message that they belong in the center of the community, not on its fringes. A central goal of the project is to inform the community about the challenges many of our students face as they grow up in lives dominated by poverty and violence, and feel locked out of mainstream opportunities. Approximately 55% of Lincoln’s students are Latino with approximately 70% of the kids receiving free or reduced lunch. The kids targeted by the Open Door Project are at risk of dropping out of school and entering the criminal justice system. These students demonstrate the most obvious symptoms of poverty and are most entrenched in the intergenerational cycle of poverty and crime. What
they have experienced at 11-13 years old is beyond most of our wildest imaginations. They are also bright, kind, capable, and incredibly scrappy survivors. We have chosen them to work with because: They are most obviously in need of help and have the least resources; it gives a clear message to the entire school that we don’t give up on kids; developing empathy, self-efficacy, and social skills in these kids will improve the social climate of our school; and finally, we believe Lincoln is a microcosm of North Fort Collins. If we help our school, we help our entire community. Our hope is to contribute to Fort Collins being among the number one cities in America for all of its citizens. We believe the best way to do this is to build partnerships with Fort Collins’ innovative and caring business community to help our most disadvantaged youth. If you are a business or individual who would like to help open doors for our at risk youth, please call one of our team members: Jill Cantor Lee (970)232-3127, Pia Jansen (970)227-2855 or Jose Sandoval (970)488-5700.
