Back to school

Find start dates, changes in leadership, renovations and updates K AT I E H A R R I S

T

he countdown to another school year has begun for parents, students and school staff members! Read on for important updates, changes and dates for your district.

Poudre School District

School start dates The first day of school in PSD is August 20. However, some schools offer transition days for incoming new students (typically at the 6th- and 9th-grade levels) on Monday, August 19. Visit your school’s website or call your child’s school in August for details. School start and end times are posted to the PSD website before the start of school at www.psdschools.org. Mill levy and bond This summer, projects funded by the 2010 Bond Fund valued at over $16.5 million were scheduled to be completed at 35 PSD sites. Major renovation projects completed include Poudre High School as well as Bauder, Linton, Lopez, Olander and Werner Elementary schools. The renovations focused on improving the environmental comfort of classrooms, enhancing building security, increasing energy efficiency as well as renewing building infrastructure. The entire list of school-by-school Bond projects, budget outline and project status updates can be found at www. psdschools.org under Quick Links, 2010 Mill Levy & Bond. Visit this webpage often, as project managers will be providing timelines and updates will be posted frequently. Concurrent enrollment opportunities available to high school students Concurrent enrollment, offered at all PSD high schools, allows high school students to enroll in college courses and high school classes simultaneously. Concurrent enrollment gives students an opportunity to graduate from high school with college credits and accelerates their progress toward earning advanced 10 | RMPARENT

degrees and entering the working world. Colorado statute requires districts to pay tuition for credit at a community college for concurrent enrollment classes students complete as part of their four-year high school plan or ICAP (Individual Career Academic Plan). Approximately $200K in mill levy dollars allows students to complete more than 4,000 college credits through concurrent enrollment. Breakfast and lunch prices for 2013-14 Full priced/reduced price meal fees for elementary and secondary schools in 2013-14 will be as follows: Breakfast

Paid Student: $1.25 Reduced: $0 Free: $0 Lunch

Elementary Paid $2.25 Secondary Paid $2.50 Reduced $.40 PSD continues to offer computer access at Walmart You can access PSD information at a computer in the Walmart Supercenter, 1250 E. Magnolia, Fort Collins. The PSD computer, which is available during regular Walmart business hours, provides access to the PSD website,

which includes the latest district news and events, as well as information about school registration, bus services, calendars and district policies. The website also provides access to specific information about your child through the Parent Landing page. This computer does not have access to outside e-mail or Internet sites beyond the PSD website. PSD thanks the Walmart Supercenter for partnering with the district on this project. IB candidate schools Cache La Poudre Elementary, Cache La Poudre Middle School and Riffenburgh Elementary are in the final year of Baccaulaureate Programme status. The IB programmes are designed to develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. For more information on IB, please visit www. ibo.org. Other IB schools in Poudre School District include Bennett, Dunn and McGraw Elementaries; Lesher and Lincoln Middle Schools and Poudre High School. PSD welcomes new superintendent The Poudre School District Board of Education named Dr. Sandra Smyser as the new superintendent. Dr. Smyser began work on July 1.

Registration Deadlines The 2013-14 school year may be just beginning, but deadlines for 2014-15 school-of-choice applications are already right around the corner! Make note of these important dates if you’re considering opting into a school other than your neighborhood school next year.

Poudre School District: School of Choice deadlines for elementary and secondary schools are in January and February. Visit www.psdschools.org for more information on how to apply.

Colorado Legacy Foundation Integration Project One of the most significant recognitions for the district is its lead role in the Colorado Legacy Foundation’s integration project. For information, call FHS at 970-613-5300. Loveland/Berthoud Enrichment Access Program (LEAP)/Innovation Lab LEAP provides enrichment to students in grades K-12 and is designed to support parents who choose to school their children at home or outside of the public school setting. more project-based and occur throughout the Loveland community. For more information, call 970-203-5489 or visit the website at http://tsdleap.org/. Homeschool courses: Homeschooled students will have the opportunity to participate in our high school SOARS program as part-time students. While learning via application and guidance from instructors, students also learn to analyze, synthesize and evaluate concepts through a myriad of informational elements provided by means of the Project Lead the Way curriculum. Project Lead the Way courses are for ANY student who is interested in engineering, engineering technology and/ or would like a rich hands-on, fun experience. Project Lead the Way is offered at Berthoud and Mountain View high schools. For information, call Berthoud High School at 970-613-7700 or Mountain View High School at 970-613-7800. Thompson Online Thompson Online offers a robust online education for K-12 students through the Thompson School District. School programs defined Many educational choices await students in northern Colorado, but deciphering them is sometimes a challenge. Check out these options.

Core Knowledge: Stresses cumulative learning year to year through a specific outline of curriculum for each grade level. The goal is to prevent repetition and holes in learning from one grade level to the next. Learn more at http://coreknowledge.org/ about-the-curriculum.

International Baccalaureate (IB): IB World Schools teach curriculum that is recognized worldwide, and promote compassion and curiosity with the goal of creating a better world. See http://www.ibo.org/index. cfm for more information. Non-traditional/Experience Based: These schools offer smaller class sizes and hands-on learning. Students complete portfolios of work rather than completing assignments for grades.

Magnet/Lab School: These schools offer traditional curriculum while allowing students interested in the school’s special focus to pursue it to a greater depth. Many magnet schools integrate their magnet focus into all subjects.

| Youth Program & Activity GUIDE

Advanced Placement/College Credit: These are intense courses designed to prepare students for higher education, boost college applications, and in some cases transfer as college credits.

Alternative Program/School: Specialized assistance for students requiring nontraditional learning environments. Charter School: These schools are publicly funded but operate separately from public schools. They are designed to provide unique educational opportunities and held accountable through monitoring of academic results. See www.nea.org/ home/16332.htm for more information. Private School: Private schools are funded primarily through tuition, rather than relying on public tax dollars, and therefore choose their own educational methods.
