he slew of backpacks, pencil cases, and 3-ring binders lining the shelves of the local box stores can only mean one thing—another school year is right around the corner! We know it can be hard to say goodbye to summer break (although we’re secretly counting down to kid-free grocery shopping right along with you), alas, it’s time to dust off the calendar and jot down a few important school-related dates. Read on for your district’s 201516 back-to-school updates!

Poudre School District

SCHOOL START DATES The first day of school in PSD for all students is August 24th. However, some schools offer transition days for incoming new students (typically at the 6th-and 9th- grade levels) starting August 19th. Check out the Back To School news item online for information regarding bell schedules, transportation information, school supply lists and more at www.psdschools.org. FOLLOW PSD ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER Check out PSD on Facebook.com/ PoudreSchoolDistrict or Twitter (@ PoudreSchools) for stories, updates, pictures and important information regarding the District and schools. THE PSD APP: YOUR DISTRICT, YOUR DEVICE, YOUR CONNECTION! A “Poudre School District” App, available to parents, students, staff and community members is now offered! The PSD App offers quick access to student information such as grades, lunch account payment and the school calendar. It also includes district notifications, news, issues, videos, job opportunities and more! You can get the free App from the Apple iTunes store or Google Play. If you have feedback about the PSD App, please email it to info@psdschools.org. MILL LEVY AND BOND In 2010, the voters of Poudre School District approved a mill levy and bond 10 | RMPARENT

issue. Bond funds are one-time dollars that will allow the district to maintain excellent facilities critical to providing a positive learning environment. Schools receive mill levy funds each year to support student instruction in a variety of ways. For more information on how mill dollars are supporting students, please visit the PSD website. The 10 weeks of summer break are when the majority of renovation, construction and facility maintenance occurs at PSD’s 50 school sites, all thanks to the 2010 Bond. These construction projects include full-scale site renovations, upgrades to secure entryways and video security systems as well as installation of new lockers, playgrounds, kitchen equipment, windows, doors and so much more. In some cases, access to schools during summer is limited because of the extent of construction. Five “red zone” schools are closed to allow for major renovations like new flooring and lockers. Other “yellow zone” and “green zone” schools have partial closures to accommodate new playgrounds, roofing, fencing, kitchen equipment, sinks and windows. For a full listing of all 2010 bond projects and closures, check the 2010 Building Fund web pages.

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Concurrent enrollment, offered at all PSD high schools, allows high school students to enroll in college courses and high school classes simultaneously. Concurrent enrollment gives students an opportunity to graduate from high school with college credits and accelerates their progress toward earning advanced degrees and entering the working world. For more information about the program, visit the PSD website or speak with your school’s counselor. THOMPSON SCHOOL DISTRICT INFORMATION GUIDE The district will post its informational guide online at www.thompsonschools. org. The publication will include essential information needed to prepare for the start of school including registration information, school start times and program details.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) Advanced Placement (AP) is a voluntary program that offers college-level classes at the high schools. By participating in the courses and exams, students are better prepared for the rigor of college, earn college credit while in high school and save tuition money as a result. Each high school offers a variety of AP classes. AP classes can also be taken online through Thompson Online. AGRICULTURE EDUCATION PATHWAYS PROGRAM Located at Thompson Valley High School and Berthoud High School, the Agricultural Education Pathways Program prepares TSD students for workforce readiness and continuing education beyond high school. The program is available to high school students throughout the district.

DUAL-LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM A Dual Language Immersion Program, housed at Truscott Elementary School and Cottonwood Plains Elementary School, will begin fall 2015 with kindergarteners. In the program, children will be taught in both English and Spanish, not only acquiring the robust knowledge that they would gain in a traditional educational setting, but also fully immersing themselves into a cultural world that will greatly benefit them throughout their lives. Over the years, as their time in the program continues, students will become completely fluent and literate in both languages.

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT/FREE COLLEGE/ASCENT Concurrent enrollment gives students an opportunity to graduate from high school with college credits. The cost for tuition is paid by Thompson School District at community college rates. Students can accelerate their progress toward earning advanced degrees and the working world. This program is open to all high school students who receive academic plan approval, meet application deadlines, and meet college course requirements. Students can take college courses of their choosing at Front Range Community College, Aims Community College or other university partners. Books and fees are not covered.

own product or service. Entrepreneurs and business experts from the community will serve as coaches and mentors guiding student teams through the process of ideation, market research and business plan development. Over the course of the year, student teams will learn about product development, financial modeling, marketing, accounting and human resources, as well as the legal aspects of running a business to get them geared up for “Pitch Week”. “Pitch Week” helps to further fire the entrepreneurial spirit by putting student teams in front of actual investors to pitch their innovative idea and possibly win funding to turn their business plans into reality during the summer and the following school year. PROJECT LEAD THE WAY Project Lead the Way is the nation’s leading provider of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. Through world-class K-12 curriculum, high-quality teacher professional development, and outstanding partnerships, PLtW is helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in the global economy. 1:1 DEVICE PROGRAM Students at Conrad Ball Middle School and Mountain View High School are provided a technology device to use in all of their learning experiences. Students use a number of platforms and systems to enhance their learning through interaction with an iPad. SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHEMATICS (STEM) STEM is offered at Berthoud High School as a focused educational program. STEM Engineering is offered at Thompson Valley High School and Mountain View High School. An “Engineering Your World” program is hosted at TVHS and a “Project Lead the Way” program is based at BHS and MVHS. STEM strives to produce scientifically and mathematically literate graduates who can step into leadership positions at the most competitive postsecondary programs in the country. The curriculum, educational enrichment and interactive approach will develop scientists capable of planning, conducting and 14 | RMPARENT

communicating their own investigations. Students design their own research project and work with an adult mentor during their junior and senior years. Included in the program is Pogil Chemistry, Project Lead the Way engineering classes and Advanced Placement options. Students interested in entering this rigorous program should call Berthoud High School at 970-613-7700. Three elementary schools—Big Thompson, Ivy Stockwell and Laurene Edmondson— and two middle schools—Turner and Walt Clark—are STEM focus schools. STEM provides a multiple-pathwaysto-success approach so that all students can succeed. Students engage in problem-based learning centered on science, technology, engineering and math with literacy as the core. In collaborative groups, students solve real and relevant problems that cross all content areas with hands-on learning opportunities. FERGUSON HIGH SCHOOL (FHS) FHS is an alternative high school for 10th graders and higher designed to address the needs of the student for whom the regular comprehensive high school situation has not been successful.

EXPLORE, ENGAGE, EXPAND (E3) E3 is an educational option for students in grades K-12 who have a passion to learn about a topic that is not taught in our district curriculum. Students identify what it is they want to learn about. They identify what they need to know and do to demonstrate they understand the concept. They work with a community member, their mentor, who helps them apply their new learning to their project. Students present their learning at the end of the year in a “Presentation of Learning” to a committee that awards the credit for the student. For more information, please visit http://e3learning.co/. SECONDARY OPTIONS FOR ACHIEVEMENT RESULTING IN SUCCESS (SOARS) SOARS serves students 17 years of age and older who have dropped out of high school or are considering dropping out of high school. SOARS provides an alternative for students who need support in completing graduation requirements. THOMPSON ONLINE Thompson Online offers a robust online education option for Thompson School District K-12 students. Students have

School programs defined

Many educational choices await students in northern Colorado, but deciphering them is sometimes a challenge. Check out these options.

Core Knowledge: Stresses cumulative

learning year to year through a specific outline of curriculum for each grade level. The goal is to prevent repetition and holes in learning from one grade level to the next. Learn more at http://coreknowledge.org/ about-the-curriculum.

International Baccalaureate (IB): IB World Schools teach curriculum that is recognized worldwide, and promotes compassion and curiosity with the goal of creating a better world. See http://www.ibo.org/index. cfm for more information. Non-traditional/Experience Based: These

schools offer smaller class sizes and hands-on learning. Students complete portfolios of work rather than completing assignments for grades.

Magnet/Lab School: These schools offer

traditional curriculum while allowing students interested in the school’s special focus to pursue it to a greater depth. Many magnet schools integrate their magnet focus into all subjects.

Advanced Placement/College Credit:

These are intense courses designed to prepare students for higher education, boost college applications, and in some cases transfer as college credits.

Alternative Program/School: Specialized assistance for students requiring nontraditional learning environments. Charter School: These schools are publicly funded but operate separately from public schools. They are designed to provide unique educational opportunities and held accountable through monitoring of academic results. See www.nea.org/ home/16332.htm for more information. Private School: Private schools are funded primarily through tuition, rather than relying on public tax dollars, and therefore choose their own educational methods.
