Yes, the 2016-17 school year is right around the corner, and we have all the information you’ll need to start the year off successfully in any of the four northern Colorado districts. Read on for pertinent dates, new lunch pricing, and principals joining each district below:
Poudre School District School start dates
For students in elementary and middle school, the first day of school is August 22. Middle school transition day for incoming sixth graders is August 19. For high school students, the first day of school is August 18. High school transition day for 10 | RMPARENT

Concurrent enrollment opportunities available to high school students
All high school students are eligible to enroll in free college classes, earning credit for college and high school classes simultaneously. Concurrent enrollment gives students an opportunity to graduate from high school with college credit, take specialized classes that match their interests and mitigate the cost of college tuition after graduation. Thompson School District information guide
Scott Nielsen, who’s been the principal of Preston Middle School for nine years, will begin work as the new Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools. Amy Schmer will take over as principal at Preston Middle School. Both have worked in the district for about 20 years. Kirk Samples will join PSD as the new principal of Kruse Elementary, coming to Colorado from a suburb of Chicago. He’s spent nine years as an elementary school principal there, and worked as a teacher, instructional technology coordinator, principal and assistant superintendent previously. Cheryl Fenlason has been appointed the interim principal of PSD Global Academy for the 2016-17 school year. She’s worked in the building since it opened, most recently as an assistant principal and Multi-Tiered Support System coordinator.
The district will post its informational guide online at www. thompsonschools.org. The publication will include essential information needed to prepare for the start of school including registration information, school start times and program details.

New principals
The following schools will greet new principals in the 2016-17 school year. This list is current as of June 22, 2016. Melanie Patterson has been named principal of Berthoud Elementary School. She is filling the position vacated by Camilla LoJeske, who retired from the district. Patterson previously served as an assistant principal at Bacon Elementary School in the Poudre School District. She served as a district consultant and instructional coach for the district as well. Her career experience also includes work
New director to coordinate postsecondary efforts
Sheila Pottorff will fill the newly created position of Director of Post-Secondary and Workforce Readiness. She’s worked in education for 26 years, most recently completing her 16th year as an administrator in the Thompson Valley School District. Pottorff will coordinate and develop the Concurrent Enrollment programs with CSU, FRCC, Aims, and CU, as well as support the Career Pathways programs at schools

as a principal and assistant principal for Quest Academy K-8 and Fort Lupton Middle School in Fort Lupton, Colorado, and as a school social worker and health teacher at GFW Elementary School in Gibbon, Minnesota. Patterson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work and a Master of Science degree in Education Administration from Minnesota State University. She is currently enrolled in the Educational Leadership doctoral program at the University of Wyoming. John Kleiber has been named principal of Garfield Elementary School. He is filling the position vacated by Karen Briski, who retired from the district. Kleiber previously served as an assistant principal at Franklin Middle School in Greeley, Colorado. His work within the school includes experience as an instructional leader, school assessment coordinator, 504 coordinator and as a blended-learning coordinator. Kleiber’s past experience also includes service as a 3rd-grade and 5th-grade teacher, an assistant principal position at Ann K. Heiman Elementary School in Greeley, an instructional coach for many Greeley-area elementary schools and as a 21st Century Community Learning Center site facilitator at Bella Romero 12 | RMPARENT

Kleiber earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Colorado State University-Pueblo and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. Danielle Feeney has been named principal of High Plains School, which will open in August 2016. Feeney served most recently as the K-5 principal at Twin Peaks Charter Academy in Longmont. She was promoted to lead the K-5 segment of the school after a successful experience as the assistant principal for the K-12 section. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education from Purdue University and a Master of Arts in Special Education from East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Tim Ridder has been named principal of Lucile Erwin Middle School. He is filling the position vacated by Diane Worner, who retired from the district. Ridder previously served as an assistant principal and as athletics and activities director at Loveland High School. He had also served in the role of student assessment coordinator at LHS. His previous experience includes service as principal of Lake County Middle School in Leadville, Colorado, and work

in the positions of assistant principal, student assessment coordinator, dean of students, and athletics and activities director at Heath Middle School in Greeley, Colorado. Ridder’s teaching experience includes work with high school exceptional needs students and middle school social studies instruction. Ridder earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a concentration in Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He also earned a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Northern Colorado and is currently a doctoral student at the university as well. Nichole Randazzo has been named interim principal of Van Buren Elementary School. She is filling the position vacated by Rebecca Marsh, who left the district to work at the collegiate level. Randazzo previously served as the assistant principal at Ferguson High School in Loveland. Her varied career in education also includes work as an assistant principal at Monfort Elementary School in Weld County School District 6, along with teaching positions at Cache La Poudre Elementary School and PEAK Alternative Secondary School in Poudre School District and previous experience in TSD as an Academic Intervention Specialist and Family Engagement Coordinator. Randazzo earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary and Special Education from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Colorado State University.

New Career Pathways
Career Pathways are programs in District 6 that offer high school students the opportunity to explore careers and fields of study they may want to pursue later in life. These popular programs offer hands-on experience, targeted instruction and some programs even offer students
the ability to receive professional certificates while still in high school. Principal changes
New principals who will join District 6 this year are: Kent Henson, principal at Greeley Central High School. Since 2012, Henson has served as Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services for West Ottawa Public Schools in Holland, Michigan. Prior to becoming Assistant Superintendent, Henson served as Principal of West Ottawa High School for 6 years. Henson earned his Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership
with an emphasis in Curriculum and Professional Development from Grand Valley State University. Henson has extensive experience with secondary curriculum and programming including: Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, dual enrollment, and early college programs. Henson was also a science teacher and athletic and activities coach for 19 years and a high school assistant principal for one year. Matt Thompson, principal at Dos Rios Elementary School. Thompson is currently the Assistant Principal at Dos Rios Elementary School. Before joining District 6, he was an assistant principal and school leader in Weld County School District RE-3J for 6 years. Thompson earned his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy
School Kickoff Community Celebration
Greeley-Evans School District 6 is hosting its third annual School Kickoff Community Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 13th from 10am-1pm at Island Grove Regional Park, 501 N. 14th Ave, Greeley. The School Kickoff Community Celebration is an annual event that raises money through sponsorships and donations to give away backpacks, school supplies and provide a free lunch to District 6 students, staff, families and community members. The event also includes community information booths, student entertainment, a petting zoo, face painting and many fun activities for families. In addition, NextCare will be on site providing $10 sports physicals. There will be emergency vehicles available for educational viewing and many community booths that will distribute information and provide fun activities as well. This year, District 6 has raised enough money to provide 2,700 backpacks filled with school supplies, and lunch to 3,000, while supplies last. Students must be present at the event to receive a backpack, and will receive

District information
Studies from the University of Northern Colorado and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Education Degree in Curriculum, Instruction, Innovation, and Change, at the University of Northern Colorado. In his current work at Dos Rios, he leads the Positive Behavior Committee and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Programs, while he serves as the liaison between the school and the supporting community organizations. Thompson was also an 8th grade English teacher at Weld Central Junior High. Jeff Cranson, principal at Greeley West High School. Cranson has worked at Greeley West since 2003, when he was hired as a business teacher and coordinator of the Advancing through Individual Determination coordinator. He was also the baseball coach at the school. In 2001, Cranson was appointed athletic director and assistant principal at Greeley West. In 2003, Cranson graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. In 2009, he earned a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Northern Colorado. Justin Ungeheuer, current principal of Bella Romero Academy K-3 campus, has been selected as principal of Monfort Elementary School, and will take over that leadership role in July 2016. Ungeheuer replaces Jennifer Sheldon, who will resign at the end of this year to take an elementary principal job in the 14 | RMPARENT
Littleton school district. In August 2008, Ungeheuer was hired at East Memorial Elementary School, where he worked as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. When the school was combined with Bella Romero in 2014 to create a two-campus K-8 school, Ungeheuer served as co-principal of the new school with Jonathan Cooney, working primarily at the K-3 campus. Ungeheuer says he is excited for the new opportunities at Monfort, but sad to leave his family at Bella Romero.
New focus programs
Several schools in Greeley-Evans School District 6 will transition to new focus programs next year: S. Christa McAuliffe STEM Academy will begin expanding to a K-8 school next year with a new focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The sixth grade class will be added in 2016-17, with seventh and eighth coming in subsequent years. Monfort K-6 School is transitioning to a Core Knowledge Curriculum school in 2016-17. Dos Rios Elementary School will be approved as a primary years International Baccalaureate Program. Brentwood Middle School will be approved as a middle years International Baccalaureate Program.
Weld RE-4 School District School start dates
The Weld RE-4 School District will be welcoming students back on August 18. Please check your student’s school website for information on preschool/ kindergarten start and orientation dates along with back to school information including school supply lists, ice cream

Weld RE-4 School District is located in western Weld County and serves Windsor, Severance, and North West Greeley. The school district serves 5,500 students in eight traditional schools and two charter schools. Across the district, students have access to a variety of technology tools. Access to technology is just one of many ways they inspire innovation in students, who consistently outperform the state average on standardized math and language arts tests. When it comes to measures of success, what makes them most proud is the consistent recognition Weld RE-4 students receive in their schools, in their community, and beyond for their academic achievements, creative talents, athletic prowess, and community service.

The district strives to inspire innovation and empower success for every student in every classroom, through their comprehensive academic programs as well as International Baccalaureate, project-based learning, and STEM options. At Windsor High School, students have access to Advanced Placement courses and dual credit and concurrent enrollment programs.
