Greeley-Evans School District 6 School start dates

First days of school for the district will be: • Kindergarten: August 24 • Grades 1-12: August 21

Open enrollment deadlines

The deadline to submit applications for open enrollment for the 2018-19 school year will be Dec. 19, 2017.

Fred Tjardes School of Innovation

A new school will officially join the District 6 family in August of 2017. The Fred Tjardes School of Innovation will be located at 717 6th Street in Greeley. This is a K-8 school that will focus on project-based learning. Students will be integral in directing their own learning, creating projects, solving problems and being engaged in the community. The first year, the school will serve about 100 students and eventually grow to more than 300 students.

Schools of Innovation

In April, the State Board of Education approved innovation plans for Prairie Heights and Franklin Middle Schools. Both these schools are at the end of the accreditation clock—meaning they have held the state’s lowest performance ranking of priority improvement and/ or turnaround for five years or more. At this point, a school must make drastic changes—from creating an innovation plan to converting to a charter school—in order to meet state requirements for schools on this status. Under the innovation plans, both Franklin and Prairie Heights will work with Summit Base Camp, an outside support company that will assist the school in personalizing learning for each and every student. With this support, students will have one-on-one time with an adult mentor each week, have their own computer to use, have personalized academic support and more access to online content that meets their individual learning needs. The state will continue to monitor the progress of these two schools and leadership at Franklin and Prairie Heights will work closely with the Colorado Department of Education to ensure success. Billie

Martinez Elementary School will also be applying for School of Innovation status for its new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math focus, or STEAM, which emphasizes blended learning and a personalized approach to help students achieve their academic goals.

GAP and College and Career Preparatory Program

In August 2017, the Greeley-Evans Alternative program will move from its downtown location to the former Westridge Academy charter school on West 20th Street. This larger facility will help accommodate more students seeking to achieve a diploma in an alternative setting, and help alleviate the large waiting list for the program. A new opportunity—the Career Preparatory Program—will also be housed at the site, and will assist older students who have either dropped out of school, and/ or who are over the traditional age and significantly low on high school credits. Students will work toward a Graduation Equivalency Diploma while simultaneously taking concurrent classes in a career field at Aims Community College. The goal is for these students to be ready for a high-skilled career at completion of the program.

Career Pathways and Concurrent College Enrollment

District 6 will continue its robust Career Pathways programs at all high schools, while beginning some new programs to help students earn professional or industry certifications before they graduation. With its partner, Aims Community College, District 6 has identified five specific programs that represent the top growing industries in northern Colorado: construction, advanced manufacturing, health sciences, agriculture and business. In these areas, students will take high school courses as well as courses at Aims Community College, and have the opportunity to graduate with an industry or Aims certificate. In addition, District 6 is working with its community partners to offer more internships to high school juniors and seniors. Through the city of Greeley’s Mayor’s Workforce Initiative, more and more businesses and organizations are offering working internships to District 6 students. This provides students realworld experience that can help them guide their educational choices as they progress. We know that students are successful when they can see a future for themselves. District 6 is working to give every student a plan for a career or field of study in higher education.

School Kickoff Community Celebration

Greeley-Evans School District 6 is hosting its fourth annual School Kickoff Community Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 12th from 10am-1pm at Island Grove Regional Park, 501 N. 14th Ave, Greeley. The School Kickoff Community Celebration is an annual event that raises money through sponsorships and donations to give away backpacks, school supplies and provide a free lunch to District 6 students, staff, families and community members. The event also includes community information booths, student entertainment, a petting zoo, face painting and many fun activities for families. In addition, Banner Health will be on site providing $10 sports physicals. There will be emergency vehicles available for viewing and many community booths that will distribute information and provide fun activities as well. This year, District 6 has raised enough money to provide 3,100 backpacks filled with school supplies, and lunch to 3,000, while supplies last. Students must be present at the event to receive a backpack, and will receive a wristband upon entering the grounds to pick up their backpack in the Event Center anytime during the kickoff. Backpacks and supplies are provided to registered District 6 students only.

Changes in District 6 for 2017-18

In order to deal with serious resource challenges in the District 6 transportation department, some changes will be implemented. To reduce the number of routes and accommodate the staff the district was able to hire, walk distances will increase at all levels. As well, bus service will be greatly reduced for high school students. This does mean that some families that have received busing for their students will not next year. District 6 staff are working to make sure all children have a safe walking route to school and that parents know they must find alternative transportation.

Start and end times for schools

The change in transportation does have 14 | RMPARENT

a positive outcome. It will allow District 6 high schools to have a later start time, and elementary, K-8 and middle schools to have an earlier start time. This will better meet the needs of all students. Research shows that teenagers biologically need more sleep and have later sleep cycles than younger students. High schools will begin at 8am. Elementary schools will start at 7:50am, and middle schools will start at 8:30am. These new schedules will go into effect the first day of school August 21, 2017.

Boundary shift

Beginning in 2017-18 students from Dos Rios Elementary School will be included in the boundary to attend Brentwood Middle School. This shift will allow a continuum of International Baccalaureate education for students: the Primary Years Programme at Dos Rios to the Middle Years Programme at Brentwood, to the Diploma Programme at Greeley West High School.

Principal changes

Christopher Kieffer has been hired as principal of Chappelow Arts Magnet K-8. He is in his 20th year as an educator, and will take over leadership of Chappelow from Sandy Cosner, who retired this year. Kieffer has 12 years of administrative experience, including 8 years as a K-8 principal in an arts focus school in Arizona. Prior to that he was a classroom teacher and a literacy coach in a Title 1 school. He is currently serving as a middle school principal in the Poudre School District. Kieffer’s extensive experience is an excellent match for Chappelow K-8 and District 6. He holds a masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Cabrini College and a masters in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. Melanie Jones will be taking over as principal at Platte Valley Youth Center, following the retirement of long-time Platte Valley Principal Rich Paull. Jones has previous experience working as a principal in youth corrections. She has also worked as a teacher in a youth correction facility and has

| PROGRAM & ACTIVITY GUIDE | BACK TO SCHOOL

experience as a principal trainer. Jones is coming to Greeley from Denver. She holds a bachelors degree from Metro State College, and a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

Weld RE-4 School District School start date Aug. 9th

Open enrollment deadlines

The district school of choice cutoffs for the following year are March 1st for indistrict students and Oct. 1st for out-ofdistrict students.

District information

Weld RE-4 School District serves approximately 6,000 students in eight traditional schools and two charter schools. They strive to inspire innovation and empower success for every student in every classroom, through their comprehensive academic programs as well as International Baccalaureate, project-based learning, and STEM options. At Windsor High School, students have access to Advanced Placement courses and dual credit and concurrent enrollment programs. They have the opportunity to explore potential career paths through a variety of programs such as Culinary Arts, Future Farmers of America, and Industrial Design and Technology.
