Let freedom ring

Being accountable for our actions protects our liberties WE ARE RESILIENT. I heard a German man being interviewed on the radio the other day. He lived in New York City and had lost several friends to COVID-19. What struck him most, he said, was how positive and upbeat Americans are about facing challenges and how confident people are that we, together, will overcome this challenge, too. My thinking is that we tend to hold ourselves responsible for our own actions. Actions have consequences and those consequences can sometimes hurt, both ourselves and other people. We don’t just have rights, but we also have responsibilities to not only our own health and safety but also to the health and safety of others. Freedom, or living in a free society, requires personal accountability from each of us. And right now is a perfect time for us to practice that. DIDN’T GROW YOUR OWN GARDEN? Visit one of the many northern Colorado farmers markets and browse the fresh produce, homemade breads, pastas, canned goods, salsas, tamales, soaps, creams, clothing, coffee, sausages, pastries, milks, cheeses, jams, eggs and more. In this pandemic year, some markets provide fewer vendors and limit purchases to correct change or credit cards. Arrows mark traffic patterns and masks are required. Check their dates. Some close as early as September 12 while others stay open into November. Still, find plenty of choices for stocking your pantry and freezer for winter. Please check the farmers market/farm stand page in this issue for locations and times.

Meal kits delivered to your door WHY SUBSCRIBE TO A meal kit delivery service? It’s an easy way to prepare nutritious meals safely. For one or two people, meals save time and expense. No grocery shopping. No buying a whole bottle for two tablespoons. Meal kits provide easy-to-follow cooking instructions and the proper amount of every fresh ingredient except salt, pepper and sometimes olive oil. If single, the two $10 meals in a kit result in 3-4 meals. Choose chef-designed meals for dietary requirements – low carb, protein enhanced, low calorie – or skip the week. Consider easy, intermediate or advanced cooking preparation. Minimum orders require two two-person meals; add a third to eliminate shipping costs. Check your city for local providers and grocery stores for kits. Otherwise, choose from over 23 companies that provide nutritious, fresh ingredients with an average cost of $10 a meal. Popular delivery subscriptions include Home Chef, Blue Apron and HelloFresh.

Fall gardening “FALL IS A WONDERFUL TIME to be in the garden,” says Bobby Townsend of Fort Collins Nursery. “It’s a time to plan and plant for spring, summer and especially fall colors. Our planting crews often work into November.” He suggested extending color with autumn blooming crocus. They can be planted as late as September. Fall planting includes spring bulbs. To prevent them from sprouting prematurely, wait to plant until daytime temperatures stay steady or below mid-60s. Divide iris. Visit nurseries and choose fall flowering shrubs, which can be planted, weather permitting, September through November for next year’s garden. Take time to clean the gardens. Trash all diseased plants. Feed a compost pile with healthy grass clippings and leaves. Refresh mulch. Trim shrubs but leave ornamental grasses untrimmed until spring so they can reseed or feed birds. Get rid of any fallen harvest to deter unwanted pests. Then, sit back and enjoy the cool days and fall garden.

Getting back to life with Covid-19

Kyle Hampton, DO

970-818-2280

arktosdirectcare.com 3938 JFK Parkway Fort Collins, CO

Colorado moved into the “Safer At Home” phase of reopening on April 27th and, as of this writing, that order expires on May 26th, 2020. The next planned phase is titled “Protect Our Neighbors” and is focused on a more normal social life, while still being protective against the spread of Covid-19. What does all of this mean though? Who is still at risk? What does the future look like? First off, we need to understand that these orders and timelines are a general guide and are flexible. If new case numbers begin to rise, we can go back to “Safer At Home” or even “Stay At Home” orders. We have to be ready to make adjustments to our lives as are necessary. We also need to be realistic with what our near future looks like with this pandemic. In reality, we are looking at many more months of precautions. Even with our modest control measures currently in place the medical community is expecting a peak for the pandemic to be around July. Then, its expected that we will continue to see cyclical periods of new cases for the next 12 to 18 months, until we can mass produce an effective and safe vaccine. It is unlikely that we will ever be able to eliminate this virus completely. We may see

small resurgences each fall and winter. We should be ready and willing to have plans for business closures as new waves can be identified. Our most vulnerable populations, those over 65 and people with chronic lung conditions, heart disease, or who are immunocompromised, need to adhere to more strict precautions and should try to practice “Stay At Home” as much as possible. The best way back to normal life is to have readily available testing for anyone who has symptoms or exposures and to be able to isolate and contact trace any positive cases. With many people being asymptomatic or even contagious prior to symptoms, we should expect waves of infections throughout the population. Our lives have been changed due to Covid-19 and the next year or two is going to be vastly different than what we are used to. However, together we will return to normal life. Please do your part in looking out for each other and our communities by following our guidelines for “Safer At Home” and “Protect Our Neighbors”. As a primary care physician, I can truly say that we here for you and we thank you for your resolve during these unique times.

Staying fit at home EVEN THOUGH GYMS ARE OPEN, you may not feel safe visiting them. Health impacts from prolonged home confinement are greatest among older people. The most important—and usually easiest—thing to do is to move as much as possible. Walk around your neighborhood as much as you can. Take a few trips up and down the stairs while you’re on a phone call. Home fitness equipment doesn’t need to mirror what’s available at the gym. A set of weights can be costly and not everyone has room for them. Plus, body resistance exercises—especially those that increase your heart rate in small internals—can be the best options for seniors. Air squats, sets of wall sits, and pushups against the countertop can be just as effective as using dumbbells. Try doing sets of eight or twelve and rotating through five or six exercises with 30 seconds of rest between them and three minutes of rest after completing a cycle. Silver Sneakers has online fitness classes at www. silversneakers.com/learn/classes/. Also, check your gym or local recreation centers for online classes.

Stay committed to farmers’ markets FARMERS’ MARKETS ARE A WAY of life for many in northern Colorado. But the season looks different this year, as we continue to practice social distancing and gathering and volunteering opportunities look and feel different. During times of quarantine, distancing, and even isolation, access to fresh, local produce and other grocery staples feels even more essential than ever. And, local farmers and food producers need our support in dollars now more than ever. Like many events and experiences over the last several months, the farmers’ market went virtual! The Northern Colorado Virtual Farmers’ Market (http://www.nocovirtualfarmersmarket.com/) started on Facebook in March in order to give community members the opportunity to purchase locally grown food, handmade products and professional business services during the pandemic. As usual, vendors include farmers, crafters, artisans and small business owners, all providing a variety of services and products, sometimes delivered straight to your door. Peruse the options at each online vendor booth, make your selections between Sunday at 9am and Wednesday at 6pm and pay with a card online. Deliveries occur each Saturday from 12–4pm with pickup available from 1–3pm. Delivery and pickup fees vary with each order, depending on your location.

Beautiful fall hikes FALL IS WHEN THE WEATHER is finally tolerable the entire day and hiking and exploring can take place most any time of day. While most of the best color changes don’t happen for another few weeks, the higher you go, the earlier colors start to change. With the risk of recommending the same old thing, Rocky Mountain National Park continues to be one of the most beautiful places in the fall, and since Trail Ridge Road typically closes in mid-to-late October, you want to get your 18 |

adventures in before then. Young Gulch, up Poudre Canyon, was closed for a long time after the effects of the High Park Fire of 2012. It has since been restored and opened, and thanks to a crew of dedicated volunteers from the Overland Mountain Bike Association, hikers and riders alike are finally able to enjoy this century-old trail again. While it’s long (5.2 miles one way), this intermediate hike is an out-and-back so hikers can go for as long as they like.

Is ordering takeout safe? YES. ACCORDING TO THE World Health Organization as well as state and county recommendations, it’s perfectly safe to eat takeout and delivered food if you follow some common-sense guidelines. Food—takeout specifically—is considered generally safe because at this point this there is no reason to believe that COVID can be spread through food or surfaces that have been cleaned according to guidelines. In fact, even if an infected person did touch your food’s packaging, the risk of transmission is slim. Takeout is also a low-risk option because you tend to be around other people for a short amount of time. For the absolute safest option, choose hands-free food (food that transferred from cooking device to packaging without touching, like pizza) or delivery. Larimer County has a list of FAQs posted on their website (www.larimer.org/health/communicabledisease/coronavirus-covid-19) as does Weld County (https://www.weldgov.com/departments/health_and_ environment/2019_novel_coronavirus/frequently_ asked_questions).

Gaming is For Everyone! BELIEVE IT OR NOT, playing video games can benefit older adults in emotional, mental, and physical ways. Playing video games can lead to happier lives, improved balance, increased intellectual abilities, and even reverse brain aging. Online games lead to happier lives because people can interact with friends in ways they might not otherwise be able to; especially during times of a pandemic where in-person interaction is limited. Results of a study compared the psychological functions between older adults who play video games versus older adults who don’t play found gamers were happier and more social, and that mood improvements were evident even for older adults who only play occasionally. To see physical benefits, one need not play physical games. Even games like Tetris—that require fast decision-making— can improve physical performance. As for intellectual abilities, games that teach complex strategy and/or role-playing can improve cognitive focus and spatial ability. The easiest way to play online games is by using your phone and connecting with friends via Facebook. Ask your friends what they’re playing and join in!

Social Isolation is detrimental to your brain health.

I recently saw one of my long-time patients and I wanted to share her story. Her hearing aids broke before the outbreak of COVID. I was not allowed to come to her residence and she was not able to come see me until the first of June. This lady suffers from dementia and anxiety. She could not hear anyone and did not know where her family went. Due to her severe hearing loss, no one at her nursing facility could explain the situation to her. She became very depressed and started to show signs of increased cognitive decline, so much that her Dr. wanted to put her on a medication treatment. She came into my office in June to get her new hearing aids. I could see the obvious increase

in her decline. She had not seen or talked to her daughter in 3 months. For the first time, they were able to catch up and we explained the situation to her. During the appointment, I could see her cognitive abilities slowly come back. Her face was bright, and she was smiling when she left. Her daughter called me a week later indicating that her Mom was doing very well. She has phone conversation, facetime and visits her regularly. A very heartfelt story. Hearing loss affects the brain in so many ways. The most detrimental way is cognitive decline, especially with severe hearing loss. The brain does not

receive a clear sound picture and cannot make sense of what is going on. If lack of information continues, the brain literally just shuts down. Do not let hearing loss come between you and your family and loved ones.

AS WE HEAD INTO TOWN after a walk in the Cache la Poudre Canyon, my wife, Kristin spots a small sign nailed to a post that says “Eggs.” “We need eggs,” she says. I turn around and pull into the farm. In a shed sits a cooler full of egg cartons and a can to put money in. Today I select the duck eggs, next time I’m going to try the turkey eggs. “You won’t find that at the grocery store,” I say as we continue home. We had pulled into Native Hill’s farm stand earlier and loaded up on fresh kale, red leaf romaine, some garlic scapes (hadn’t ever seen those before) and a couple of cucumbers. It’s always a treat to see what fresh, healthful produce is available when you visit a farm stand or a farmers market. Plus, you have an opportunity to talk directly to the folks who are planting, growing and harvesting your food. Small businesses have been hit hard by Covid-19 and associated restrictions, especially small farmers and ranchers who not only sell directly to consumers but also supply struggling restaurants in the area. At the same time, the greater food supply chain has been disrupted and shoppers are looking beyond their habitual sources for sustenance. Now is a particularly good time to stretch a little and discover the great resources we have right here in our northern Colorado backyard when it comes to tasty local produce and meat.

“We felt like the world turned upside down overnight but we are thankful that we just happened to build a new farm stand onsite and that people are really coming out to get great food and support a local farm business,” says Nic Koontz, owner of Native Hill Farm

along with his wife Katie Slota, about the COVID-19 challenges. “We, as a team, love feeding our community good food and cultivating a community around that good food, along with connection to place.” Connection to place might mean appreciating and supporting our community, the environment, really everything that makes this home to each and everyone of us.

SHORT SUPPLY CHAIN

“Food grown close to home has many benefits over food trucked or flown in from far away. Local food is super

fresh, offers a huge variety, is the highest quality, and has taste that is unparalleled,” says Katie Slota on the Native Hill website. Aaron Rice, owner of Jodar farms could not agree more. “One of the biggest reasons to buy local is that it shortens the supply chain,” Rice says. “And you can’t beat the opportunity to speak to the people who are actually raising the animals.” Jodar Farms specializes in pastureraised pork and poultry, along with egg sales. At the farm, visitors can learn about the quality lifestyle of the animals raised on the farm and beyond.

“It’s super important to us to have an animal slaughtered humanely and with compassion,” Aaron says, “and it makes a heck of a difference in the quality of the meat if they’re not all stressed out.” More and more people are paying attention to where their food comes from and how it is raised and processed.

ALL SEASON OFFERINGS

Many local producers offer their goods

Shop local… virtually

throughout the year with products changing with the seasons. Check out websites to see what they offer. And if you’re quick, you might just get your name in for a Thanksgiving turkey at Jodar Farms. Gailmarie Kimmel, founder of Be Local Northern Colorado and co-founder of Winter Farmers Market sums it all up like this: “It’s a great time to be supporting our local farmers. They are always essential workers

Support local artisans, farmers and small businesses Are you looking for fresh farm-to-table food, locally produced health products, handmade gifts and art from area artists? Shop away on the NOCO Virtual Farmers Market website. With a few clicks you can order a variety of goods that will be delivered to your doorstep. In March, with COVID-19 closures looming, Alexa Vasquez launched a Facebook group to help hers and other small businesses survive and serve the local community. It took off and now features a slick website with 67 local vendors and counting. “Our customers tell us they are grateful and happy for what we are doing and they want to continue to support and shop local,” Vasquez says. “We love our work, take it seriously and are proud to be the first Virtual Farmers Market to appear in Colorado.” As the seasons change, so will the products, produce and services they offer.

but perhaps we are recognizing that fact in these challenging times. Not only do they provide super-fresh and delicious options directly to us, but also purchasing from them keeps more of our dollars in our local economy, supporting our neighbors and supporting our land and water. Buying local food is a triple win, meeting all three prongs of real sustainability: people, planet and economy. What’s not to love about that?”

PAY YOURSELF FIRST G i ve u s call tod a ay at 970-4 16

Each month, you settle down to pay bills. You pay your mortgage lender. You pay the electric company. You pay the trash collector. But do you pay yourself? One of the most-basic tenets of sound investing involves the simple habit of “paying yourself first” – in other words, making your first payment of each month a deposit into your savings account. The trick is to prioritize. Make it a point to put your future first. At first, saving may mean a small lifestyle change. But most individuals want to see their net worth increase steadily. For them, finding ways to save becomes more of a long-term commitment than a short-term challenge. What will you do with the money you save? We can help! We will work together to stop the ravages of inflation and taxes on your money, so that you can keep more of what you earn. We are a family owned private wealth management firm. And, we’re celebrating our 25th year in business in 2020! We use tax planning and tested investment strategies so that you and your family will keep more of what you have earned. We take pride in personal and timely service and building long term relationships.

Fassi Financial works with you to develop trustworthy and realistic customized financial plans.
