radioactive iodine. High cholesterol can also be associated with low thyroid. If you have hypothyroidism it’s important to get tested because left unchecked it can have serious consequences. According to the Mayo Clinic, untreated hypothyroidism can increase the risk of heart disease, mental health issues, nerve damage to your limbs, and more. EXPERIENCING MISCARRIAGES OR HAVING A HARD TIME GETTING PREGNANT?
H
ave you been feeling run down lately and you don’t know why? Hypothyroidism creates several vague symptoms that make you want to swap workouts for TV and a warm blanket—especially in cold weather. Hypothyroidism can occur at any age but it’s more common for women in their 50s and beyond. However, it’s not terribly rare for women in their 20s and 30s to develop hypothyroidism, and it’s something to pay attention to because it affects fertility. The thyroid is the thermostat of your body. It controls energy, metabolism, mood, digestive function and temperature. If you have extra dry skin, often feel cold, tired or constipated, have trouble remembering things, feel depressed, experience muscle cramps, have heavy or painful periods, weight gain or discharge from your breast, it might be hypothyroidism. It can be hard to pinpoint and it’s not something doctors test for regularly at annual exams, so if you have even one or two symptoms, ask to be tested. The test is a simple blood test that

looks at the level of two hormones – TS3 and TS4. A high TSH means you have low thyroid, and a low TSH means you have too much thyroid. It’s good to get a baseline for comparison over the years as sometimes a test comes back in the normal range, but it’s not normal for you. WHY THYROIDS STOP WORKING PROPERLY
Some people have full-blown hypothyroidism caused by an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto’s Disease. Much more common is hypothyroidism due to a thyroid glad that stops producing enough hormones. Doctors don’t really know why the thyroid sometimes stops producing enough hormone. Theories of what causes hypothyroidism include autoimmune disease, an inflamed thyroid gland, a problem with your pituitary gland, and certain medications. Men and kids can have it, too. Some conditions increase your risk for hypothyroidism. One is diabetes. Another is having any type of autoimmune disease. A third is having had radiation to your chest or neck, or taking
If you are trying to get pregnant and are having difficulty it might be because your thyroid is not working correctly. When thyroid hormones are low they can impair the release of an egg from your ovary and they also can cause miscarriage. While some believe it should be, it’s not a standard test before or during pregnancy. However, it’s one of the first tests done at fertility clinics and can be an inexpensive fix to the problem. A low thyroid can also affect your baby’s development. Thyroid hormones are essential to healthy brain development. It’s estimated that between 4 percent and 15 percent of pregnant women have hypothyroidism. TREATING HYPOTHYROIDISM
The treatment for hypothyroidism is a daily dose of synthetic hormone. It can take some time to get the right medication and right dose, but generally people feel better within a few weeks of starting treatment. It’s important to get rechecked six weeks after starting treatment or switching brands to make sure it’s working properly. The wrong dose can cause heart palpitations or heart failure, so it is important to be precise. Finally, avoid self-treatment as it can do more harm than good. Hormones are tricky to get right, so it’s best to leave it to an expert. If you’ve been feeling especially tired of late or seem to be extra bothered by the cold, it could be your thyroid. See your doctor and get it checked.

Take a bite out of teething Sooth your baby with the following options LY N N U . N I C H O L S
I
f you could fill a bucket with all the drool and fussing your baby is doing these days, read on. You likely need tips on teething. Babies drool. It’s what they do as they haven’t learned how to swallow their extra saliva yet, but if your baby’s drool seems more robust than usual, it could mean she is getting ready to pop a tooth. Here are some ways you can soothe her, and hopefully gain some better sleep and more pleasant days. Babies start showing signs of teething around three months and it continues until around 2 years when they have a full set of teeth. Bottom front teeth come first, followed by the top. Babies get their first pearly white between 5 and 12 months of age. That’s when things get messy and loud with a lot of drooling and fussing. It hurts when teeth push through tender tissue! Besides, having swollen gums makes it hard to sleep and eat, something your baby might put on hold when a tooth is coming in. Babies also can get low-grade fevers with teething, up to 101 degrees. Here are some ideas—traditional, homegrown and alternative—on soothing your baby’s pain:
LET HER CHEW
Teething babies like to chew on hard and semi-hard objects. Biting down and applying pressure soothes swelling. The object can be as simple as a frozen wash cloth or her favorite natural rubber toy. If you want to get fancy, you can buy teething items specifically made for babies, including wood teethers or mesh teethers—gadgets with handles and a mesh bag for putting frozen fruit inside to raise the taste appeal. But don’t let her suck on a bottle of formula, milk or juice for hours or at bedtime as this can cause tooth decay. You can also give her chilled applesauce, slushy juice, a cold spoon to suck on, or even a popsicle. Some moms go for a big piece of celery, watermelon rind or large carrot, but watch closely to make sure

| FAMILY HEALTH GUIDE
she doesn’t bite off bits that are too big to swallow. RUB THE GUMS
Use a clean finger or knuckle for a quick solution, or a damp washcloth to massage her gums. There are even gum massagers designed for babies that look like mini toothbrushes. GO NATURAL
Visit your local natural foods store and you’ll find several options to soothe your baby’s teething pain. If you can’t make it to the store, brew some chamomile tea, chill it, and then soak a washcloth in it for your baby to chew on. FREEZE IT
Cold helps reduce swelling. You can make slushies of frozen water, chamomile tea or even breast milk in ice cube trays. Turn them into a slushy delight and spoon-feed them to your baby. Or, simply wet a washcloth, wring it out, and place it the freezer. Let her suck, chew and drool.
WHEN IT GETS BAD, GIVE A PAIN KILLER
If she’s especially cranky or if you detect a fever, it’s time to go for the hard stuff. Try baby acetaminophen or ibuprofen but never aspirin. When needed, use over the counter pain medicine at bedtime as your baby feels the pain more at night. AVOID NUMBING CREAM
Pass on the numbing medication for your baby’s gums. Often saliva washes it away quickly and it may numb your baby’s throat, affecting his natural gag reflex. WIPE HIS CHIN
Drool can cause skin irritation so keep a towel handy! Like with every stage, this too shall pass. By the time your baby turns into a toddler at 2, you’ll likely be past teething and on to other things, like climbing every object in site, building forts out of your couches and bedding and spinning in circles until he’s giddy. Enjoy it all— even the drool.

H HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD COPE WITH DISASTERS KIM SHARPE
urricanes, floods, fires, earthquakes, school shootings, racial clashes, wars, rumors of wars. There’s a lot going on in our world that can produce feelings of fear and behaviors that are byproducts of fear in people of all ages. As adults, hopefully we either have the tools to cope when disaster strikes or know how to ask for help. Children and youth may not have those skills yet, so it’s up to parents, teachers and other caregivers to assist them in dealing with crises-caused stress. Children’s reactions to traumatic events largely depend on their age, if they’re personally effected or not, how much exposure they have to the event and how the adults in their lives react. Very young children may develop separation anxiety and become uncharacteristically cranky and clingy, and cry a lot. Some may revert to outgrown behaviors, like bedwetting or thumb sucking. Older children and teens may have trouble focusing in school, act out in rebellious ways, and may not want to hang out with friends or leave their home. Kids of all ages may have trouble sleeping and/or have nightmares. “These are normal reactions to abnormal events,” says J. Barry Mascari, a national specialist in trauma and disasters. He adds that “reactions are often situation specific and transient.” They are temporary and will pass. TALK ABOUT IT
One of the first ways parents can help their kids deal with traumatic events is by allowing them to express their feelings and ask questions. Parents’ responses should be honest, but age appropriate. Carl Nassar, professional counselor and director at Heart-Centered Counseling, says, “Talk about the event in a way that helps create understanding. Kids often don’t fully understand what’s going on, whether it’s what’s happening, how close it is to them, and/or if and how it’ll impact them. You may not know all the answers, but as best you can, help create understanding and insight. Even when your kids think they know a lot about something, you can listen to what they know and offer up what you know, having a two-way dialogue that leads to greater understanding for both of you.” It’s also helpful for parents to share
their own feelings about a situation, but they should do so in a controlled, age-appropriate way. “If an event made you sad, allow your kids to see your sadness. If an event made you upset, express that in a clear, respectful and contained manner,” says Nassar. “If you can show your emotion in a regulated way, that’ll help kids normalize feelings, but not be overwhelmed by them.” ROUTINE REIGNS
When everything seems out of control, developing some semblance of normalcy is key to helping people cope. Parents can do that for their children by maintaining as much routine as possible in their family life, because maintaining simple schedules helps establish a sense of stability and safety. For example, try to eat meals at the usual time or keep bedtime rituals the same. If your child’s daycare center or school remains open, send them as before. Don’t keep them home and isolated from friends. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), parents can help children cope with disasters and the stress they feel during traumatic events by:
• Giving each child some undivided attention each day, to let him or her know you are there for them, even if just for a few minutes. Share experiences, reaffirm love or concern, and make plans together. • Understanding that fears after a disaster are very real. Continuously reassure them. • Helping them adjust to disruptions and changes by keeping them informed. • Reminding them often that they are safe. Give hugs, hold them, spend recreational time together, tell stories or just talk together at bedtime. • Encouraging them to spend time with friends. Peers can offer great support during the recovery process. • Temporarily lowering your expectations for them, giving them all the time and space they need to recover.
Research shows that only about 10 percent of disaster survivors will experience prolonged issues dues to posttraumatic stress, which reaffirms that humans are amazingly resilient. With support and time, most people recover well after disasters and life-changing events, including children. So, stay calm and carry on.
