O

nce again fall is upon us here in Colorado. The leaves are quickly changing to yellows and then brown as they fall into the patent crispness of the fall air. As fall marches steadily toward winter students from across the state will transition from the chill of fall soccer season to the warmth and laughter of music lessons. This year more than 400 Kindergarten through fifth graders will continue their study on a musical instrument through Sera Schools Music Programs. Some of Colorado’s brightest students at some of its best schools will once again further their creativity and intelligence with musical study. Do you know the benefits to early study on a musical instrument? There is an ever-increasing number of studies being published evaluating the effects of musical training at a young age. A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience out of Northwestern University suggests that adults that grew up with musical training experienced “strong linguistic benefits” and “improved performance on everyday listening tasks.” In addition to the specific listening and hearing benefits of early music instruction, an article in Scen-

tific American states that: “Musically trained kids do better in school, with stronger reading skills, increased math abilities, and higher general intelligence scores. Music even seems to improve social development, as people believe music helps them be better team players and have higher self esteem.” Sure, music will make your child into a super-student, but what’s more important: music is fun. For over six years Sera Schools has endeavored to take advanced musical study on an instrument, to the elementary level; where it belongs. Over 400 students throughout the state of Colorado are currently studying extracurricular music in their schools during the after-school hours. Students have the opportunity to play: Guitar, Violin, Piano, or Sing. Unlike other music schools, Sera Schools is focused on what works for the younger mind. The curriculum is guided by a specific set of measurable skills achieved by appropriate repertoire, and students are motivated by a system of awards and progress reports distributed during the two yearly recitals. Since its inception in 2005 Sera Schools has evolved a value-guided system for its

instruction. The values are: PACE, PATTERN, COMPASSION, and FUN. PACE refers to thoughtfully crafting the level of challenge and reward for students, and also to teaching to the median ability level during group classes. Teachers rely heavily on more advanced leaders emerging within groups and assisting their peers. This is one of many character benefits included in the curriculum. PATTERN dictates the sequence of instruction, and comprehensive knowledge-building is the most practical and effective way to learn music, or anything else for that matter. COMPASSION is the heart of Sera Schools and every teacher is committed to the families and communities they serve. Music lessons with Sera Schools have an emphasis on FUN. This year Sera Schools is offering lessons and classes at: Werner Elementary, Tavelli Elementary, Traut Core Knowledge School, Bacon Elementary, Polaris Lab School, Bennett Elementary, and Lopez Elementary.
