Finding the right fit for your child KATIE HARRIS
F
rom neighborhood schools to a range of alternatives, educational opportunities continue to grow for northern Colorado families. Each year, opportunities for northern Colorado families expand as new specialties and alternative options are added to local school curriculums. Most parents send their children to their neighborhood school. For other parents, the option to choose a school outside their neighborhood boundaries is a blessing, but deciding which school is the right fit for your child can feel like a curse at times, too. With acronyms like IB, STEM and SOARS being tossed around in everyday school lingo, it’s becoming increasingly important for parents to study up before deciding on an educational path for our children. Below, find the complete list of specialty schools and programs by district, as well as descriptions of common terms in northern Colorado education. School of Choice policies Poudre School District: Parents in-
terested in sending their children to a specialized school or one that is outside their boundary area should follow the instructions available at www. psdschools.org/academics/educational -choices/school-choice and complete the application that can be found there. If total applicants for any school exceed available space for that school then an automated lottery system will be utilized. Families who have been accepted will be notified and given two school days to accept or decline. Families who are not accepted will be placed on a waiting list. Deadline to apply for the 2013-14 school year:
The district chooses which schools will be available for choice/open enrollment based on available space, staff, and accommodations. The list of choice/open enrollment schools for 2013-14 can be found at www. thompson.k12.co.us/Divisions/ Learning_Services/openEnrollOpen Closed.html. Schools programs defined Core Knowledge: Stresses cumulative learning year to year through a specific outline of curriculum for each grade level. The goal is to prevent repetition and holes in learning from one grade level to the next. Learn more at http://coreknowledge.org/about-the-curriculum.
International Baccalaureate (IB): IB World Schools teach curriculum that is recognized worldwide, and promote compassion and curiosity with the goal of creating a better world. See http://www.ibo.org/index.cfm for more information.
Non-traditional/Experience Based: These schools offer smaller class sizes and hands-on learning. Students complete portfolios of work rather than completing assignments for grades.
Magnet/Lab School: These schools offer traditional curriculum while allowing students interested in the school’s special focus to pursue it to a greater depth. Many magnet schools integrate their magnet focus into all subjects.
Advanced Placement/College Credit: These are intense courses designed to prepare students for higher education, boost college applications, and in some cases transfer as college credits.
Alternative Program/School: Specialized assistance for students requiring nontraditional learning environments.
Charter School: These schools are publicly funded but operate separately from public schools. They are designed to provide unique educational opportunities and held accountable through monitoring of academic results. See www.nea.org/home/16332.htm for more information.
Private School: Private schools are funded primarily through tuition, rather than relying on public tax dollars, and therefore choose their own educational methods.

Several educators from Thompson and other school districts participated in a mini-showcase and presented presentations about instruction modules designed to provide more literacy into all secondary courses. This was part of a two-day Literacy Design Collaborative session to support teachers in addressing students’ reading and writing skills within various subject areas. The Literacy Design Collaborative is part of the Colorado Legacy Foundation and Colorado Department of Education’s Integration Project in which Thompson has taken a lead role with several other school districts to improve teacher effectiveness.

tots rock Class, More than Mere Child’s Play It’s never too early to expose toddlers to music. recent studies show early music training increases IQs and enhances early language skills and spatial intelligence—the guts of what’s needed to solve math problems. that’s the theory behind the Piano & Guitar Institute’s tots rock class, offered on an ongoing basis in both Fort Collins and Windsor. It’s amazing how much fun and learning is jammed into one half-hour session. on a recent Wednesday morning, six toddlers from walking to three years were busy enjoying a variety of activities with their moms close behind. the day started with Dirk Kraus, the institute’s owner, playing guitar and singing rock tunes. Quickly after, the tots selected colorful ribbons to swing while dancing. next up was picking a stuffed animal from a box, naming its color and passing it while counting to their neighbor. soon, the group made a butterfly craft complete with a song on butterflies, a discussion on whether it was butterfly season, and a chance to fly their butterflies. It’s obvious that every moment of the class is thought out thoroughly to make it both fun and educational. “We developed the
class to help toddlers achieve academic readiness, explore music, and develop both fine and gross motor skills,” says Kraus. In the class, tots are exposed to four genres of music: children’s tunes, jazz & blues, classical and rock n’ roll. “We don’t repeat any lesson for four months, so toddlers can stay in the class continually until they graduate to the next level,” he adds. For three- to five-year-olds the institute offers “Busy Bee Basics” a six-week group piano class or private piano lessons. “our goal is to teach young kids to read music,” adds Kraus who developed and wrote the institute’s music curriculum—the Premier Pianist series. lessons are available for all ages, including adults. “the advantage of having all of our instructors use the same curriculum is that there’s no willy-nilly guessing of how to teach music. they all receive training on our curriculum—one of the best in the nation—and teach to that high standard,” says Kraus. the institute has 15 instructors “so we can really match each child with just the right teacher,” exclaims Kraus. If you like themes, you’ll love the institute. It has several themed lesson rooms. Which would your child choose? the
panda room, tiger room, star Wars room, super Mario room or the ocean room? If that’s not enough, five themed recitals are held each year, including a summer beach party. the year culminates with a grand event at the rialto theatre where each of the institute’s 250 or so students show off their skills. the teachers, many with music degrees, perform at half time. “one year’s theme was 350 years of opera. other years’ themes were Mickey Mouse’s 75th Birthday and the 25th anniversary of Mtv. It’s a jampacked weekend of fun,” says Kraus. the institute is located at 1295 Main street #3 in Windsor or 2925 s. College #8 in Fort Collins. Contact Dirk at 970-206-4930 in Fort Collins/ 970-686-9660 in Windsor, or visit www.pianoinstitutellc.com.
