From the Publisher
Wonderful winter The allure of the quiet season
MY DOG CHARLIE AND I went for a run this morning. We, actually I, chose the Valley Loop in Lory State Park. It was 10 degrees outside when I woke up, so I told Charlie that we were going to have to wait a little bit until the promised sun warmed things up a bit. He continued to pester me even though I’d made an excellent case for postponing for couple of hours. I needed a little extra time to gather my winter running clothes and make some choices. We finally left at 9am on a sunny Sunday morning. Snow covered Longs’ and Meeker and the foothills shone white too. The slightest breeze stirred as we left the parking lot and started up the West Loop trail. Sunlight illuminated icy grasses against blue sky and I suddenly remembered why I loved winter trail time: the crispness, the quiet, the stories told by tracks in the snow. In two hours, we saw not one other person on the trail. I love running or walking or living in a place through the seasons, to watch the grasses shift from green to brown and the trees change from fully clothed to revealing their beautiful structures, to hear the birds chirping their arrival in spring and their quiet absence in the cold, darker days. Everything is a process of birth, growth, death and renewal. The cycle continues and every part of it has something to celebrate. And of course, this entry to winter is the beginning of the holiday season, kicking off with Thanksgiving. I myself am thankful for many things, from the opportunity to draw my next breath to the warmth I feel from friends and family. I think the important thing is to be there with our people when we’re with them. I know that’s a funny thing to say, but it’s so easy to get caught up with worry about finances and politics and what he said that made me mad and about the meeting I have on Tuesday, that sometimes, in fact a lot of the time, we forget to be in the room with our people or on the trail with our dog. Sure our body is there, but our mind is a million miles away. And that’s how we manage to not show up for our lives. I hope your winter is as wonderful as your spring and fall and summer! Scott

Winter decorations SHOW OFF THESE simple holiday decorations that say “winter” after the holidays are over. • In clear glass jars, vases or glasses add sprigs of evergreens – holly, spruce, fir or pine – and a little water. Display in groups of threes. Surround bases with more greenery and pinecones. Substitute glass with scented candles. • Hang a wreath of evergreens, pinecones and white flowers or berries on the front door. • Drape a wool or plaid afghan on the sofa/chair back or arms. • Fill a favorite bowl with pinecones to decorate a coffee table. Fill another bowl with a few pieces of greenery and oranges pierced with cloves. Set on the kitchen table. • Display ice skates, skis, sleds, snowshoes, snowmen and/ or red cardinals or other winter birds. • Stack firewood or birch branches in a bucket interspersed with evergreen branches and pinecones. • Tack a felt snowflake to decorative pillows.

Safe shoveling tips SNOW SHOVELING CAN lead to health risks including heart attacks and back injuries. Try these recommend tips: • Before tackling the job - stretch, lean and bend. Hydrate. Don’t shovel on a full stomach. • Layer clothing and remove layers as you heat up. Wear slipproof boots and a scarf or mask. • Make sure the shovel is your size - smaller not larger. And plastic rather than metal. • Push instead of lift. Use leg muscles, not arms and shoulders. If lifting is required, lift a half load. Hold handle with hands 12” apart. • Keep knees bent and back straight. Avoid twisting. • Take several breaks. • Shovel early during the storm and often. • Keep your cell phone handy for an emergency. • Be aware of medical warnings – chest pain, shortness of breath, light-headedness, dizziness. • Know your physical limitations. Ask for help.
Cozy up with an electric fireplace NOTHING COZIES UP A WINTER evening like a fireplace. Yet, city regulations or building codes might prevent installation of a wood burning or even gas fireplace. Consider purchasing an efficient and cost-effective electric fireplace to provide a warm atmosphere. Advantages include consistent heat for one room and portability. Installation is easy. Whether built in, hung on a wall or in a furniture cabinet, just plug it in, even in tight spaces. With no open flame, toxic fumes, ash or smoke, electric fireplaces are safe, clean and last a long time. Prices start around $200 but can escalate to an average of $700-$800 according to style and size. The higher the costs, the more realistic the flame - Mylar, mirrors and LED lights emulate a real flame upon a metal, rock or wood log. Choose an electric fireplace for its low-cost, high-efficiency, portability, atmosphere, beauty and overall practicality. It also provides heat.

Better Health
Kim Sharpe
Pamper your pearly whites LIKE BREATHING, many people take their ability to chew for granted. However, without intentional care, neglected pearly whites can make eating difficult or impossible, becoming the source of many medical issues. Problems with your teeth, gums, and mouth can cause pain, infection, trouble eating and sleeping, and other health problems. And certain medications prescribed for other health issues can affect oral health.
To help maintain or improve the health of your teeth: • Brush at least twice each day and floss once a day • If arthritis makes brushing challenging, use a toothbrush with a larger handle or an electric toothbrush. • If you wear dentures or partial dentures, clean them daily and remove them for at least four hours out of every 24 hours to keep the lining of your mouth healthy. • Get regular dental checkups. • Tell your dentist about all the medications and herbal remedies you take.
Should your health go to pot? IF YOU’RE OVER 50, chances are you’re turning to weed for relief from pain, insomnia and other medical conditions. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, cannabis use among seniors increased by 250 percent from 2006 to 2013. The US Food and Drug Administration is getting on board the weed wagon, too, as it recently approved Epidiolex, the first cannabisbased prescription medication now available in all 50 states; it’s used to treat certain types of epileptic seizures. While many consumers say they experience great benefits from marijuana, people should exercise caution when using it to self-medicate, especially older adults. “We don’t know a lot about how marijuana use might increase risks for falls and balance problems. There are also concerns about people with pre-existing cardiovascular
16 |
Fifty&Better
conditions. It just hasn’t been studied enough,” says Mike Van Dyke, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment chief of toxicology. And the interactive effects of marijuana and other prescription medications definitely requires further research. Danielle Fixen, a pharmacist at the UCHealth Seniors Clinic at the Anschutz Medical Campus, says that if seniors use cannabis, they should use products with higher levels of CBD rather than THC. (CBD is the chemical believed to reduce inflammation. THC is the psychoactive component in marijuana—the one that makes people feel high.) If you use any form of marijuana, make sure to tell your physician and all other medical personnel who provide you with care.
Nature’s remedy IF YOU ENJOY BEING OUTSIDE in the sun, wind, rain or snow, turns out there’s science behind your positive response to natural phenomena. Spending as little as one hour outdoors in a natural setting improves memory and attention span. Walking in nature fights depression. Prolonged time in nature lowers the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, suppresses the sympathetic or ‘fight or flight’ system, enhances the parasympathetic or ‘rest and recover’
system, lowers blood pressure and increases heart-rate variability. Maria Fenty, a certified forest therapy guide based in Fort Collins, says, “The take-away is to just get out! Find a spot to sit on the grass beside a tree or on a park bench. Notice what you can hear and see. Notice what you feel. Opening your senses to nature will improve your mood, reduce tension and anxiety, and help you focus and concentrate for the rest of the day.”

5 things that treating your hearing loss says about you. I have been treating people with hearing loss for 19 years and the hardest situation I encounter is having someone say that they are going to wait to treat their hearing loss until it becomes worse, or when they notice more trouble. I believe that even a slight hearing loss, like a 20% loss, should be treated at the first sign of issues. When you treat your hearing loss, you are treating your overall health and wellbeing.
2. You like to be active People who use hearing devices are more outgoing and therefore more active. They also like to be active with friends and family.
Here are 5 things that treating hearing loss says about you:
4. You value your happiness Hearing loss can lead to isolation, depression, and if untreated long enough; dementia and Alzheimer’s. If you wear hearing devices, you get pleasure from doing things and are less likely to feel down.
1. You value your relationships People who use hearing devices are more likely to have a large social network. You are more likely to be around people when you can hear and understand conversation easily.
3. You are a go-getter People who wear devices tackle problems and can engage in their work environments longer.
5. You Love life—Because you can engage in any listening activity easily, you are
more likely to engage, feel optimistic and feel happy in your life. If you struggle to understand conversations, ask others to repeat what they say, struggle in background noise, or feel others mumble; these could be signs of even a slight hearing loss. Your first step is to have a full hearing evaluation to determine the severity of hearing loss and possible treatment options. You do not need to suffer in silence. Susan Baker is the owner and operator of Advanced Hearing Services in Fort Collins. She has been helping people with hearing loss and Tinnitus for the past 19 years. Please call (970) 221-5249 for an appointment today.

Singled out The dating game
after 50 Kim Sharpe
Humans are social creatures. And anyone with any experience at doing life will probably agree that humans are designed to be in relationships with others. SO, WHEN PEOPLE FIND themselves suddenly single—either due to a break up, divorce or death—it’s natural to feel loss and to eventually seek out new companionship. In this digital age, many people are looking for love in wired places. Wired for romance Online dating is gaining in popularity. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, in just two years, from 2013 to 2015, the percentage of 55- to 64-year-olds who reported using an online dating

When you begin to date again*... • Take time to get to know a person before diving in. Ask questions to learn who they are and what they’re about. • Don’t talk about your former spouse and make comparisons. • If someone you meet doesn’t seem like a good fit for you, it’s okay. Move on.
site or mobile dating app doubled from 6 percent to 12 percent. Pew also reports that the overwhelming majority of Americans think online dating is a good way to meet people. Technology definitely has changed the dating game. “Texting and social media can add to the excitement of dating with the ability to find out more about a person before you meet in the comfort of your own home,” says Dennis Vanderheiden, a widower who likes the online dating site, Bumble, “as it is up to women to make the first move and message the man first if there is a match. But [online dating] can also lead you to formulate preconceptions that could be unfair to the other person.” Ron McInroy, a divorcee of five years, likes match. com. He confesses, however, that “at first, I was scared to death to go online, but I didn’t know how else to meet people. I work with a bunch of guys and I don’t like bars. Besides, just think of how many bars you’d have to go to meet the number of people online dating sites give you access to.” McInroy appreciates the online selection process of filtering through profiles to find someone who seems to have what you’re looking for. He also likes match. com’s optional feature that lets you know how many times you cross paths with someone you’re interested in. While visiting his son in Jackson, Wyoming, McInroy found a woman living there he thought might be nice to meet. Then he discovered they had crossed paths about 15 times in two days. Now a happy dating couple, McInroy says, “If it hadn’t been for the online connection, I’m not sure we would have ever met even though we’d probably passed each other on the street.”

Natural selection Elizabeth Davis, a widower of three years, likes natural meet ups the best, believing in letting relationships develop organically. She met her now-steady beau while attending community meetings. Their relationship began by taking daily walks which evolved into walks with lunch afterwards. “When my husband of 30 good years died, I never imagined myself dating again; I wasn’t looking for a relationship. But once I met Mark and we began to walk and talk, I realized how much I missed having a partner I could have conversations with.” Nancy West is recently divorced. This past summer when she had time off from teaching, she challenged herself to try online dating. “It was interesting, but it mostly felt like shopping for a used car. I also didn’t like having to market myself. That didn’t feel right. Ultimately, I would love to meet someone in the real world. Online might be quicker, but I’m okay with going slow.”

Get ready, get set Before beginning to date, most people benefit from allowing themselves to grieve their past relationship, regardless of how good or bad it was and how it ended. Next, “You should be okay with being alone, because if you are, you won’t put so much pressure on a new relationship and you can make more objective decisions about whether or not a new person is a good fit in your life,” says Kari Weiler, a Fort Collins-based marriage and family therapist. Weiler adds that individuals need to be able to recognize triggers from past relationships that elicited a lessthan-ideal response and not carry those over to new relationships. West says her biggest hesitations about dating are “that I don’t want to have my heart broken again and trust is a big issue. Before I really open myself up again, I have to love myself. I’m learning to do that now.” Vanderheiden says, “It took me some time to fully realize that I was able to welcome someone new into
my life. I knew that I couldn’t expect anyone to replace my wife, but that someone new could add to my life by not being exactly like her.” Maturity matters There’s a lot to be said for the experience that comes with age, especially as it relates to romantic or committed relationships. Vanderheiden says, “I’m 59 years old and unlike when I was young, I’ve discovered how easy it is to be comfortable talking about intimacy. Also, how receptive and appreciative the woman I am dating is to this.” People with less life experience may not be able to communicate as openly about intimate matters. Davis adds, “Dating is different now because I don’t have high expectations of others. Little things like whether my partner leaves the toilet seat up or puts it down isn’t important. What is important is that we have a patient, loving and tolerant relationship. One that’s kind. I wouldn’t settle for anything now but that.”

Magical

THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS A time for being together, and it can be even more magical when out-of-town family comes to visit. Not only are these visits a chance to catch up and spend time together, they also present a valuable opportunity for your children to bond with their extended family, and experience some of the family traditions you grew up with. Keep an extended holiday

Fifty&Better
gathering lighthearted by following some simple guidelines: PLAN, BUT DON’T OVER PLAN
When we don’t get to visit with our family as often as we’d like to, it can be tempting to cram months or years of missed time into one week-long visit. Resist the urge. Two or three organized outings per week may be all
your family can handle, especially if your group includes small children or elderly family members. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE BABYSITTING
The cost of cooking for a houseful, on top of buying pricey tickets for holiday shows and events can be daunting. Why not send kids off with your extended family for a day of fun, while
mom and dad get to save on tickets and cooking and enjoy a quiet date night at home. PUT THEM TO WORK
Wondering when you’ll fit in Christmas baking, card sending, and holiday decorating with a houseful of family to entertain? Enlist your guests! Ask a relative to share a favorite cookie recipe with your children and then bake it together, or, host a cookie bake-off with all your family members. Pull out your back up of craft supplies or pick some up. They can make paper snowflakes, glittery pinecones, or popcorn garlands.
STAY IN
On a cold winter day, keep it easy! Grilled cheese, hot cocoa, and a game of charades, or a jigsaw puzzle will keep the whole family happy and entertained, and create a perfect atmosphere
for catching up with one another. Try a game or two to help your kids get to know their extended family—have each family member write down a few interesting facts about themselves, then read them aloud and let your kids try to match them to family members. Or have one person start telling a story and go around the room with each person adding to it. Building a Lego masterpiece with grandpa, starting a good book with their aunt, or beginning a craft project with grandma can be great ways for your kids to connect with their relatives during downtime at home. Choose activities wisely: With so much going on this time of year, all it takes is a little research to discover outings that are suitable for all ages. If you know a toddler won’t sit through an hour-long show, choose a trip to the Festival of Trees or the farm instead. Look for family-friendly outings.
WHEN THE VISIT’S OVER OPEN UP THE LINES OF COMMUNICATION
Use this get together to fuel more frequent communication between kids and their out-of-town family. Before your relatives leave town, make a date between them for their next communication, whether it be a phone call, letter, email, or Skype. Make it a regular occurrence by calling it “Friday night phone call to grandma night,” or “First of the month Skype with the cousins.” SHARE MEMORIES FROM THE VISIT
Ask everyone to share the photos from their visit to a group share site, or, have everyone mail a copy of their favorite picture to the rest of the group with a memory to go along with it written on the back. Share these with kids to help them remember the fun they had with their family.
THE GIFT OF STAYING IN TOUCH
In place of gifting your children more toys, consider starting a new tradition. Ask your parents or other relatives to consider starting a book or magazine of the month club with your child. They choose age-appropriate reading material for your child each month, read it first then mail it to you. After your child reads it they can call each other for a meeting of their book club, and share their thoughts on what they’ve read.

Don’t settle for accepting the notion that older people have nothing to contribute. Rather, stay active, keep moving and help others, because by doing so, you help yourself. Augustmoon moved to Greeley in 1998 as her 32-year marriage was dissolving and finally ended in divorce. At first, she shut herself away, but soon decided that wasn’t how she wanted to spend the rest of her life. So, she got up, got out and began volunteering, feeling it would be a good way to get to know the community, meet people and help her overcome her personal sadness. Since making that decision, Augustmoon has made volunteering a habit, helping with several agencies, including: Bright Beginnings, visiting new mothers to share information about parenting; United Way of Weld County, assisting with its annual

help yourself fundraising campaign; the Senior Resource Services, driving people to appointments and to run errands, like grocery shopping; the Life Stories–Child & Family Advocacy organization as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), offering stability and caring to neglected and abused children; and the Weld Food Bank. Plus, she has helped out at a variety of city and community events—”just for fun.” “I volunteer and give back to the community because I feel it’s our personal responsibility
to help others who are unable to help themselves,” she says. “When I volunteer, I get as much out of it or maybe more as the people I help. Just like having a pet, when you volunteer and know somebody’s depending on you, it gives you purpose—a reason to get up, get dressed and get moving.” Augustmoon also says volunteering is a great way to fight off depression. “There’s so much joy when you open your heart to others. It’s amazing to see how people are impacted when you take time to care.”

Late November Morning
Late November In the high country There can be a still day offered Suspended between The cold winter to come And the breezes of autumn With her golden aspen banners.
A day when early snows Have come andRobert gone, Calhoun Summer’s growth now brown Pressed flat upon the ground, When the forest floor Takes on a tidy look Of things put away, Locked up for the season.
