Goals schmoals How we mess with ourselves

KRISTIN SENT ME A STORY about a study that psychologist Susan Pinker (you can see her Ted Talk at www.ted.com/talks/susan_pinker_the_secret_to_living_ longer_may_be_your_social_life/details) did where she looked at what factors were related to living long and living well. She had a Top 10 list, and it was truly surprising. Things that we think make a big difference, such as exercising or weight control or being treated for high blood pressure were way down on the list and relatively much less important than the things at the top of the list. A couple of things near the top of the list, numbers three and four, were smoking and drinking habits. I get that as pretty much a no-brainer. It was the two things that topped the list that really grabbed my attention. Guesses? The best predictors of living a long, happy life are: No. 1—social integration, how well you interacted with people as you went about your daily life. And No. 2—close relationships, how strong your ties are to family and good friends you can count on. And it was face-to-face interactions that mattered. I was reading Kim Sharpe’s excellent story about New Year’s Resolutions and it got me thinking about what seems to be the typical way we go about setting goals and even what goals we set. The first question I seem to come around to is “Why goals?” They can be counterproductive to us being happy and content. I’m a failure if I didn’t walk 10,000 steps for 6 days in row. I’ll be happy when I lose those 10 pounds. In the meantime, I’m not content. Plus, rigid goals slot us into a narrow track that often doesn’t leave room for flexibility and discovery. No California of Bust moments, just that steady tic, tic, tic toward more awareness. I mean the people heading for California 150 years ago who stopped in Denver instead did alright, in my opinion. Like I’m going to save this much money and I’m not going to go out with friends or go on a vacation until I do. That might seem prudent, but it might also cause you to miss that memorable moment with friends and family that truly enriches (see what I did there) your life. In Kim’s story there’s a nice section about being kind and compassionate toward yourself. That seems like a great starting point in any case for anything. No need to ever beat up on yourself because you didn’t have the “will power” to overcome. The funny thing is that we focus our resolutions on the things that don’t necessarily make us healthier and happier. What if we shifted our mindset just a little bit and instead of setting a goal to lose 10 pounds, we moved toward paying attention to our eating and our bodies. So I start by improving my relationship with food, being more thoughtful of what I put in my mouth and also how I put it my mouth. I can use meals to deepen my relationships with friends and family and to the planet. In addition, I can practice being present as I focus on what’s right here in front of me. Chances are that I’ll end up losing weight but, in any case, I’ll likely be happier, which is how I prefer to go through life. Taking off a bit from what Kim says at the end of her story: It’s not about what we get at the destination. The journey is about what we become, how we grow and what we learn along the way. Here’s to a long, happy, people-filled life, Scott 8|

Warm up with a fireplace

NOTHING IS MORE INVITING than a wood burning fireplace on a cold winter night if you are lucky enough to have one. Wood burning fireplaces are no longer an option, but there are many choices to consider if you wish to upgrade or add a fireplace. The National Association of Real Estate Appraisers says adding a fireplace can increase the resale value of a home by as much as 6-12 percent. And, you can expect to recoup 100 percent of its cost. Select from natural gas, electric or ethanol burning. Before adding a fireplace, check building codes, requirements such as vent pipes, limits on fireplace emissions and permits. If you want something simple to use, inexpensive, easy to maintain with good heat output, choose a gasburning fireplace. You can also check out electric fireplaces that do not need any structural changes to your home. If you desire trendy, pick a see-through glass fireplace. Whatever your choice, do your homework then enjoy the rewards of a cozy fire.

5 benefits of houseplants INDOOR PLANTS CAN IMPROVE your health and well-being. Several studies over the years have shown some interesting benefits of houseplants in the work space, hospital or home. • Subject performed one of two tasks—repot a houseplant or complete a computer-based task— repotting reduced stress while the computer task increased heart rate and blood pressure. • Students who attended classrooms with live plants were more attentive and better able to concentrate. • Horticulture therapy proved to have created feelings of wellbeing in people suffering from anxiety, depression and dementia. • People recovering from surgery healed faster when looking at real greenery. • People worked faster and were less stressed, took fewer sick days and were more productive when a plant was in their work space. Consider these for your home or work space—areca, lady, dwarf date and/or bamboo palms, Boston fern, rubber tree, spider plant or Ficus tree.

Cozy up this winter AFTER HOLIDAY DECORATIONS ARE put away, create a warm, cozy feeling for the rest of the winter. Think bright, white and natural elements with evergreens and a bit of shine. Search the internet for ideas like these. Gather some winter artifacts to use as a base—old sled, ice skates, empty planter, grapevine wreathes, snowshoes. Add symbols of winter—greenery, pinecones, bare branches and something bright like white/silver berries or snowflake cutouts. Welcome guests with winter decorations and a wreath at the front door. Keep the holiday greenery on the mantle. Add white decor—berries, birds, pinecones, snowflakes. Display snowmen decorations. Add a group of candles in various sizes and odd numbers. Cozy up the furniture with layered white throws and pillows. Vary the textures—woven, furry, wooly. Include a pop of color, such as blue. Display firewood or birch pieces in a bucket. Make centerpieces of silver trays filled with symbols of winter and white candles.

Defying the declining libido

OUR SEXUAL DRIVE DECLINES as we age, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept it. Once we get certain roadblocks out of the way—like dryness after menopause for women and erectile dysfunction for men—we can discover a renewed interest in sex. Ask your doctor about solutions for symptoms, then consider redefining sex. Sex doesn’t have to be just intercourse or something you do just before sleep. Get adventurous. Have sex when you are most energetic, like in the morning. Spend more time warming up with romance, touching and kissing as well as emotional sharing. If you are still struggling, see a sex therapist. You just might learn something you’ve never before considered.

Feel younger through fitness AS WE AGE, MAINTAINING MUSCLE MASS is less about looking buff than it is about being healthy. The benefits of hitting the gym are even more important as we age. If we maintain muscle mass and cardiovascular health into our 50s, 60s and 70s, we get a huge payoff— the ability to continue to do things we love without fear of injury or losing our balance. Our bodies look and feel younger, and we are more able to easily move around out in the world and at home. Aim for two to three weight training sessions a week, even if it’s just dumbbells or resistance exercises on a mat at home. Also try to fit in at least 150 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week, according to the Mayo Clinic. Don’t forget to stretch. Stretching helps maintain flexibility and range of motion, increasing circulation and blood flow.

Catch some ZZZZs NOTHING’S WORSE THAN waking up tired and dragging yourself through the day. As we age, our sleep patterns change. We tend to have a harder time falling asleep and staying asleep. Insomnia, snoring, restless leg syndrome and the inability to sleep in late are all common problems for older adults. What can you do to get a good night’s sleep? Try these tips. Cut out coffee by mid-afternoon. Did you know caffeine stays in your system for an average of 4 to 6 hours? A late afternoon coffee just might mean a late night awake. Develop good sleep hygiene—go to bed at the same time each night, avoid screens, limit alcohol, dim the lights and no snacking before bed. If you do wake up during the night, don’t lie there and fret. Get up and read, listen to mellow music or do another quiet activity with the lights dim. Once you feel sleepy, crawl back in bed. Remember, just because you might get less sleep now than when you were younger doesn’t mean you need less. In fact, we need just as much if not more sleep as we age.

Year-round hikes SUMMER IS OVER BUT you can still hike. Jim Davidson (hiker, climber, speaker and author of The Next Everest) says, “My favorite winter hikes are: • Coyote Ridge in the mid-day sunshine • Horsetooth Mountain at sunrise after a few inches of fresh snow (wear microspikes on your boots and use trekking poles or ski poles for safe footing) • Mount Bierstadt on snowshoes (bring full winter survival gear and a reliable hiking partner).” For less strenuous treks, avid hikers Lori and Mark Ferin suggest Rocky Mountain National Park Alpine Lakes, Poudre Canyon, Devil’s Backbone and Eagles Nest. What do you intend to do

in 2022?

20 |

Fifty&Better

THE SOUNDS OF REVELERS ringing in a new year often signal that it’s time for improvement and change. Perhaps you want to lose those extra pandemic pounds, kick an unhealthy habit, work less and play more. About half of Americans make resolutions each year, but research shows only about eight percent keep them. Once we resolve to change, what

exactly sabotages our ability to follow through and keep our New Year promises? Joseph J. Luciani, a clinical psychologist and author of the international best-selling Self-Coaching series, in a column written for U.S. News & World Report, says “…it all boils down to self-discipline. Essentially, you build self-discipline by willfully

over again (e.g., being too ambitious, being too unrealistic). Any goal that you set for yourself has to be do-able and enjoyable.”

VISUALIZE AND COMMIT

Based on his knowledge of the scientific psychology and aging research literature, Diehl recommends that you do a little exercise, which he calls “Visualizing Your Future Self.” Close your eyes and look inward for several minutes. Visualize how you would like to be 10 years from now. When you open your eyes, write down what you saw in terms of how you would like to be 10 years from now. I call this your “Hoped-For Self.” Next, close your eyes and look inward again for several minutes, but visualize how you would not like to be 10 years from now. When you open your eyes, write down what you saw in terms of how you would not like to be. I call this your “Feared or Dreaded Self.” After you have done this exercise, make a serious decision and commitment of what you can do on a day-to-day basis to achieve your “Hoped-For Self ” and to avoid your “Feared or Dreaded Self.” “It is perfectly okay to start out with small things, like walking for 10-15 minutes every day or cutting down on sugar or salt in your diet, but you need to make a serious long-term commitment,” he says.

SLOW DOWN AND BE KIND

enduring the transient discomfort of changing who and what you are. You’re not born with self-discipline; you acquire it. Like a muscle, you need to develop your self-discipline muscle, one challenge at a time. Starting today, instead of reflexively feeling a need to minimize or escape the friction involved in change, recognize instead the need to endure it. Bottom line: Don’t bail!”

Here are more ideas about how to make and achieve goals in the New Year:

GET REAL

Manfred Diehl, CSU distinguished professor and Human Development and Family Studies Graduate Programs director, says, “Think about your past New Year’s resolutions and try not to make the same mistakes

No one’s perfect and making changes is hard. There will be times when you act in a way that’s counter to your intentions. When that happens, Carl Nassar, licensed professional counselor and LifeStance Health–Colorado Division executive director, suggests that you “do more by doing less. In other words, remember that the times when you need to do the least are the times when your anxiety tells you to do the most. To do that… Practice breathing exercises and slowing down in the form of mediation, mindfulness, and/or yoga.

Fifty&Better | 21

Offer compassionate kindness to yourself. As you practice compassion for self, lean in to seeing everyone through those same eyes of compassion. Remember that we’re all going through struggles, and at the end of the day, we’re all in this together.”

SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES

A study conducted by Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at Dominican University in California, confirmed that when we tell someone our goals, we’re more apt to follow through. Greater than 70 percent of study participants who sent weekly updates to a friend reported successful goal achievement

22 |

Fifty&Better

(completely accomplished their goal or were more than half-way there), compared to 35 percent of those who kept their goals to themselves. Reverend Rick Mawson, Greeley Interfaith Association president, retired United Church of Christ minister, and retired licensed marriage and family therapist, adds that sharing our intentions and experiences benefits individuals and whole communities. “From a faith perspective, as unique human beings, the life events that help transform us into better, more compassionate, and loving persons affirm who we are called to be. As we accumulate those life changing

experiences, it becomes important to tell our life stories to others, in conversations and in writing. Life affirming communities are built and sustained by people sharing their stories with each other.”

ENJOY THE JOURNEY

Motivation guru Zig Ziglar, says, “What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” The process of change can be full of adventure and discovery. Basically, the journey toward keeping your resolutions is just as important as actually meeting them. Journey on.

Northern Colorado is perfect for your adventures COLORADO IS A MAGNIFICENT PLAYGROUND and vacationland. From skiing and hiking to watersports and air balloons, anyone can find a place to play and relax. Instead of traveling this time of year, stay right here in Colorado. Staycations are a great way to focus recreational time into a meaningful and relaxing time. With a little planning, they offer a way to experience northern Colorado in a brand new light!

Lisa Boesen

24 |

Fifty&Better

Let’ s get started. Below are 12 tips to jump start your planning: Define your goal. Understand what you want to accomplish or experience. Maybe, you want to recreate a favorite vacation spot or create a totally new experience. A sunny break to hack the “winter blues” may be in order! Perhaps it is a time just to relax, learn, be active, or all. Consider your usual vacation accommodations. Whether it is a boutique hotel, or a rustic cabin to disconnect for a while, northern Colorado offers you a wide range of accommodations to help you imagine being anywhere from a posh hotel in downtown Paris to a cute cottage in Montana or beyond. Create the ambience. If staying at home, what items can you place around the house, in your bedroom, or outdoor eating spaces to help build the context of your destination? Even a bouquet of sunflowers can bring in a Provencal touch. A picture of an Italian villa, Southwestern style candleholders, a travel guide, pretty placemat décor—the ideas are endless!

Define your time frame. A staycation can be as little as one day, or, as long as you want. The staycation is yours. A fun way to get started is to designate a specific “departure” or start time and a “return” date and create a leave and return “ceremony” or event. Define your staycation guidelines. Maybe it is no heavy-duty seasonal chores. No reading or sorting of mail. No eating at home unless you are pretending you are in a vacation rental and cooking your own meals. If at home, pretend you are receiving room service and eat in a different room such as a bedroom or enjoy a picnic on the patio or yard. Mimic your destination. Northern Colorado offers many things that are available in other areas of the country or other countries. For example, in Provence, each town has its own weekly market. So does northern Colorado! If marketing is your thing, schedule visits to the markets such as Fort Collins Winter Market, Native Hill Farm Stand, and a learning experience to Willow Creek Mushrooms. Maybe you love Sedona

but can’t get there this year. A hike in the Red Mountain Open Space offers visually spectacular red mountains, a trickling creek in the Spring, and earthly, quiet beauty. Daily activities keep the experience going. Some travelers seek out epic outdoor adventures whereas others prefer a more down-key approach, while others are somewhere inbetween. Snowshoeing at elevation pretending it’s a day jaunt in the Alps works for others and a beautiful stroll in a local café district may hit the spot for others. Almost every town in northern Colorado offers lovely downtown districts for strolling, popping in for a coffee or aperitif, a small plate or experiencing a full dinner. Food. Experiencing cuisine is an important part of any vacation. Whether it is French, Russian, or Vietnamese, there are many cafes and restaurants to enhance your staycation. Northern Colorado is full of fun finds such as The Cheese Importers in Longmont; Masha and the Bear Russian Café in Aurora; or

Fifty&Better | 25

Cacciotori’s in Fort Collins. Local or online cooking classes, like those offered through The Cooking Studio, Ginger and Baker, and the Gardens on Spring Creek, may elevate staycation food experience. Local, ethnic grocery stores, such as Turmeric and the Olive Tree Market, sell unique foods for those who want to expand their culinary palates. A hidden gem in Fort Collins is The City Drug Store in downtown Fort Collins which offers several aisles of European delicacies. Disconnect. Not everyone can completely disconnect, but if that is your goal, use the same process as you would for a regular vacation. Let others

26 |

Fifty&Better

know you are disconnecting and not available. Use your computer or phone time as you would on a real vacation. Learn and apply at least one new thing each day related to your destination. A greeting or phrase in the language, a food, a social habit, an historical snippet, are fun ways to deepen the staycation experience. A movie, a book or documentary, can also enhance the staycation experience. Do your pre-vaca prep work. Get your usual pre-vacation chores done, i.e., the lawn, watering plants, etc. If you do decide to do a few chores, pretend you are helping the owner of your rental home. Have fun with pretending!

Create your staycation language. Have some fun with this! Label your home as the hotel room, cabin, or condo, your PC as the “business center” and the kitchen as the “refreshment center” or “breakfast buffet.” Staycations are not only a great way to have fun, but they also bring life into perspective. Life in northern Colorado brings the cup “half full.” From hills, mountains, and plains, to rivers, waterfalls and interesting small towns, staycations can offer a way to re-experience the wonders we have around us. With enough creativity, you can transition days at home into interesting staycation days of learning and relaxation.

Why is hearing loss associated with Dementia? D

amage to your ears and your brain doesn’t always start off related. But over time, something as simple as hearing loss can become a significant risk factor for cognitive decline, including dementia. The brain is affected by untreated hearing loss and can often cascade into a series of other cognition or health-related issues. What Is Dementia and What Causes It? Dementia is a general term for mental decline severe enough to interfere with your daily life. The symptom that most often springs to mind is memory loss– but it’s not the only issue associated with dementia (which can also include changes in personality or severe mood swings). The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which is a very specific decline in the memory and thinking centers of the brain. The exact causes of dementia are difficult to pin down. The brain is a complicated organ and there is any number of things which might cause it to malfunction in specific ways. That’s why most research concentrates on identifying specific risk factors. Some known risk factors include Diabetes,

Anxiety, Depression, Lack of exercise, Head injuries or traumatic brain injury, and Hearing loss. How Is Hearing Loss Causing Dementia? Hearing loss is a risk factor, and it may have something to do with how your brain changes when you’re no longer able to hear. When you develop hearing loss, you begin to strain to hear everything you’re supposed to hear. It takes more work, and your brain must change the way it operates. And it’s those exertions and alterations, some researchers believe, that leave the brain more vulnerable to developing dementia later in life. What Can You Do? If you’re at an increased risk for developing dementia, you need to treat the risk factors. 1. Get Regular Hearing Screenings. A hearing exam can help you spot any deterioration in your hearing in the earliest stages. A baseline can establish a starting point to measure any changes in the future. 2. Determine Whether You Need Hearing Aids. If you’re already noticing

some hearing loss, hearing aids can be a vital tool in preventing an accelerated cognitive decline. With a hearing aid, your hearing won’t have to strain your brain so much to hear what’s happening around you. 3. Stay Active. Make sure you are socially and physically active daily and using your brain. If you are concerned about brain health, your hearing and you want to take steps to prevent or treat any potential hearing loss, call us for your personal consultation. Giving back

Virtually lifesaving

Volunteers come to the rescue of isolated older adults LIFE IS ALL ABOUT connections and interconnectedness. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to connect in new ways that largely involved technology, which proved challenging for many—especially older adults. Recognizing this, the City of Fort Collins used CARES Act money to establish its VirtuVisit program to help isolated seniors connect with family and friends. First, the city put out a call for volunteers to help design and serve participants in the program. Shuah Khan, a 50-something Linux operating system developer with an 80-something mother, was one of the many volunteers who answered the call. “When the city needed volunteers to help develop the VirtuVisit program during the Covid lockdown, the timing seemed right to help and the work seemed right up my alley,” says Khan. “I have an older mother who’s not tech savvy and who I help with that, and I understand how challenging it can be. Plus, social connection is so important for our health.” At the height of the lockdown, 36 volunteers helped think through technical issues, like privacy and security, select and deliver tablets for participants to use, and became technology buddies for participants. There was no cost for people to participate and receive training on technology use. Sue Schafer, City of Fort Collins volunteer services program manager, 50 |

says, “the City of Fort Collins has a high volunteerism rate. People love our community and want to give back. This was clearly evident through the pandemic as volunteers helped pave the way for new and more creative ways to connect with their neighbors.” Volunteers like Khan met with people in person at the Fort Collins Senior Center to set up their tablets and teach them how to use the tablets to make calls. “There was a lot of hands-on teaching, like how turn a device on and off, connect to WiFi, and use the camera and audio,” Khan says. The city no longer supports VirtuVisit because its CARES Act

funding is gone and there are no longer staff to support it. “We’re still supporting the folks [originally] in the program, but we are not taking new participants,” explains Schafer. “The need for the program has also diminished since the vaccine roll out.” Yet Schafer believes VirtuVisit “… made a very positive impact. I’ve heard of long-term friendships being formed through the program. It also proved that the program could be done and provided data around the positive emotional impact it had on participants and volunteers alike.” Khan says she loved working with the seniors, especially listening to their stories. “Seniors have so much wisdom. They gracefully roll with life’s challenges and make the best of a situation. If I can be like that when I’m older, I’ll be doing great, and we’re all moving in that direction.”
