Fitness matters
Staying healthy through the holidays and beyond
SO WHAT ABOUT A PLACE that’s a gym at the beginning of January and then turns into a bar two weeks later? Kristin read me a joke like that a few days ago and I think that’s not a far-off metaphor for how we are. We come out of the holidays feeling a little bloated and blah and decide that we can do better. And we do…for about two weeks until we do actually feel little better and then we dive back into our old habits, though not quite at holiday levels.
Last year we went a little radical and did this eating plan that eliminated about everything—no dairy, no legumes, no processed anything, and no refined carbs, which, meant, gulp, no red wine! Well, the first two weeks were pretty miserable as you might guess. It was hard to give up most things, knowing that we could ease back into them. The problem was that apparently our bodies love to burn carbs and without those, we get a little cranky—at first. Then, the theory goes, our bodies get used to burning fat and once they do, we have this consistent energy flow. They even have a name for it: Tiger Blood.
The funny thing is that it worked. By the end, I wasn’t even missing the red wine, which really surprised and kind of disappointed me.
As the holidays approach and with more family than ever living nearby, I’m anticipating a hearty holiday season. I’m pretty much the epitome of the phrase, “I can resist anything but temptation.” I have to get pretty psyched up if I’m going to take a pass on that cheeseburger and fries at the restaurant and opt instead for the slab of fish with green beans. But I can do it.
Eating at home is much easier. We simply buy the healthy stuff that we want to eat and then prepare that. It’s much easier than saying no at a restaurant.
The other side of the same coin is exercise. It seems that the more I move, the more I can move. I think that it’s both a physical, health thing and a motivational, habit thing. I go to the climbing gym two or three times a week. I have a couple of regular partners and we motivate each other to show up. I’ve been doing that for a few years now and without a doubt I’m stronger and more flexible. It just takes making it a priority and setting up the situation right.
We have several great stories about eating and staying fit. Claire Sable explains how we can stay fit without having to go to a gym—everything from online classes to having a personal trainer come to your home. Claire also looks at the 3 M’s of healthy eating—mindfulness, moderation, modification in her Better Health column. And Linda Osmundson reviews Senior Centers in the area where you can meet people and stay active.
Have a great holiday season and a fantastic New Year!

Cozy up for winter
WINTER IS A TIME TO CREATE A cozier home atmosphere. Try the following tips.
Hang a winter wreath on the front door. Leave warm slippers by the bed or entry door. Purchase fuzzy area rugs and cover those cold hardwood floors beside the bed, in living room, kitchen and bathrooms. Bring in live plants and flowers with a touch of color.
Install warm LED bulbs in lamps. Add candle groupings to tabletops and winter-themed table runners from quilts
or woven natural materials. Hang heavier drapes. Create conversation groupings by moving furniture away from walls and windows and into the middle of the room, maybe near the fireplace. Scatter colored pillows and throws on furniture.
Create a cozy reading area with good light, soft seating and a warm blanket. Display family photos framed in warm woods on bookshelves.
Last but not least, bake something every few days for warm, inviting fragrance.
12 tips to help avoid holiday stress
FOLLOW THESE TIPS for stressless holiday cooking.
• Prep cookie dough early and refrigerate for a few days or freeze for weeks.
• Make and freeze baked Christmas cookies and pies early.
• Coat cookies with corn syrup before adding sprinkles.
• Build a dessert charcuterie board.
• Mash potatoes several days ahead. An hour or so before needed, warm potatoes in a crockpot or double boiler.
• To crisp turkey, stop basting, turn oven to 450 degrees and watch carefully until brown.
• Encase ham with molasses, sweet mustard, cranberry or bourbon glaze to keep it moist.
• Spice up made-ahead cranberry sauce with a sprinkle of orange liquor, spiced rum, port wine or cran-rasberry juice.
• Avoid gravy lumps. Pulse in a blender until smooth.
• Choose smaller turkeys to avoid chemicals and allow shorter thaw/cook time.
• Disguise cracked pie tops with whipped cream, chocolate ganache or praline pecan topping.
• Purchase plenty of leftover containers for guests.
Care for the birds
ONCE TEMPERATURES
DROP, CONSIDER purchasing bird feeders to supplement scarce winter forage. Plan to supply bird food through May and arrange for someone to fill feeders if you go out of town. Install a baffle (metal umbrella above the feeder) to deter squirrels.
Rich food (like dried fruit, peanuts/nuts, black oil sunflower seeds and various forms of suet purchased or homemade) helps birds prepare for Spring mating. Research local bird species and what to serve them.
Purchasing a feeder? Choose plastic, steel or glass for easy cleaning rather than porous surfaces like wood or clay, preferably with a tray. Avoid those with sharp edges or points. To prevent spoilage, choose several smaller feeders with an adequately spaced perch. Place feeders far apart to eliminate overcrowding. Select a feeder with drainage holes and a plastic dome to keep everything dry.
Then, sit back and enjoy the bird show.
Keep in touch with family and friends
ONE OF THE MANY LESSONS learned through the pandemic is that we need each other—that staying in touch and maintaining close relationships with family and friends, and feeling a sense of community, is critical to our mental and even physical health.
Fortunately, while modern life may be partially to blame for our increased isolation, it also provides some convenient remedies to it. Apps such as Facetime (iPhone)
and Zoom, for example, have provided an accessible and sustainable way to maintain and nurture our most important relationships. And as we learn to live with our new ‘normal,’ many are also opting to return to in-person meetings with friends and family, as well as rejoining exercise classes, book clubs, going out to eat and more. To find a group of people with similar interests in your area check out meetup.com.
Home safety at the holidays and year-round
A SAD TRUTH OF MODERN LIFE is that we have to be mindful about protecting our property and possessions. According to an article in Forbes Home, more than 1 million homes are burglarized every year, but you don’t have to be a part of that statistic.
Technology has revolutionized the way we protect our homes, and these systems don’t need to break the bank. A popular option called Ring, which can be purchased online or from a big box store, runs around $60 for their least expensive system, and it can be set up by the homeowner. And Ring is one of many. An online search will turn up a ton of different options.
Other home safety considerations include having equipment such as your furnace, checked. Homeowners should install a carbon monoxide detector in the home and ensure that smoke detectors are functioning properly.
And if you’re expecting very young guests over the holidays, make sure to child-proof your home. This could include locking lower cupboards, making sure bathroom doors are closed, covering sharp edges of tables with a protective covering, putting covers on electrical outlets, and storing all prescription and over-the-counter medications out of reach of little hands.
Eating mindfully over the holidays
WATCHING WHAT WE EAT is important year-round but can be especially challenging during the holidays when treats abound. According to Psychology Today, you can keep that holiday weight gain at bay through mindfulness, moderation and modification.
It’s easy to eat too much when we’re not paying attention— a.k.a. mindless eating. To combat this, make sure to take notice of what you’re eating, fully enjoy it, but then don’t overdo it—‘moderate.’
Another diet-saboteur is all of the rich, calorific drinks we usually skip the rest of the year. These holiday favorites can push our calorie intake over the edge. That doesn’t mean you should shun them completely, just make them an occasional treat.
And when it comes to holiday meals, there are lots of ways to lower calorie content while not sacrificing flavor. For example, plain yogurt works well in place of sour cream, rutabagas are a wonderful stand in for potatoes, and maple syrup can be used instead of brown sugar in many recipes. A simple online search on substitutions is just a few clicks away.

Pamper yourself
NEED A LITTLE PAMPERING? Consider a spa. Pick from day, destination, resort/hotel or mineral/thermal springs spas. Before choosing, do some research. Check online reviews, service options, practitioner experience, environment, products, medical information and hygiene.
Costs determine what spa treatments and/or location you might select. With one service under $100, expect a spa package of two or more treatments to start at $150 and easily increase to $450. A full day can run $750 or more with added costs for destination spa travel.
Although massage, facial and body therapy are the most popular treatments, check the wealth of other spa services. Spa benefits claim to de-stress and calm your mind, smooth skin, enhance sleep, release serotonin and dopamine, aid anti-aging, reduce headaches, manage pain, improve blood pressure, circulation, self-esteem and confidence.
Weigh the benefits/costs. If spa pampering is right for you, relax and enjoy!

Red Light Therapy (RLT) seems to be the latest buzz word in natural healing. However, RLT goes back hundreds of years and most recently you may have read of NASA using RLT to promote wound healing and plant growth.
RLT can be emitted by lasers or by LEDs. Specific uses are determined by wavelength, modulation and intensity of the light which is why most devices sold for home use do not produce the same long-lasting results as professional devices with higher
power and specific calibrations.
This month the focus is how to lose weight fast with the RLT device patented as UltraSlim. Wherever you are in your weight loss journey this is the first and only non-invasive FDA cleared medical device for immediate fat reduction.
Clinical studies show that UltraSlim’s specific calibration reduces fat and cellulite by producing small holes in fat cells, causing lipids (the molecules inside your fat cells) to drain out. In 32 minutes,
• Collagen and elastin production
• Pain management
• Lose weight fast
• Inflammation reduction
• Breast reduction/tightening
• Healing wounds and injuries
• Improved performance and muscle repair
• Healthier and thicker hair
New trials and studies are continuously being completed. Many articles can be found on PubMedhttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
an average patient will see 3.5 inches/1.6 liters of fat loss and over the next three days will continue another 1.5 inches of fat loss on average. In trials on breast reduction, patients have been known to drop a full cup size with one 8-minute treatment. These people were asked not to change their diet or exercise habits, so the results didn’t come from exercising more or eating healthier.
Ultraslim has also has FDA clearances for pain and inflammation, as well as skin tightening and rejuvenation.
There are many published studies, clinical trials and patents issued for varying conditions using RLT:
Home-based fitness
The benefits of ‘getting physical’
L SableFOR THOSE OF US WHO CAME OF AGE IN THE
80S, exercise gyms seemed to pop up on every corner. And many of us, inspired by exercise gurus like Jane Fonda, donned our spandex outfits and did high-impact aerobics (ouch!) and jazzercised to the beat of Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Let’s Get Physical.’
While leg warmers and jumping around in place are mostly relics of the past, the idea that regular exercise is a worthwhile pursuit has become deeply entrenched in our collective zeitgeist. And nowadays, we don’t even need the gym because the variety of options for working out at home is vast, and the convenience and flexibility of home-based fitness can’t be beat.
EVEN COVID-19 COULDN’T KEEP US FROM OUR WORKOUTS
While the idea of home fitness is certainly not new, the number of people opting to exercise at home grew by leaps and bounds in response to Covid-19 lockdowns. By the fall of 2020, Peloton, manufacturer of high-end exercise bikes saw its sales more than triple, according to a report from CNBC. Tonal, maker of in-home strength training systems, saw its sales increase by 800 percent in 2020. The message from consumers was clear. While we were willing to forego eating out and going to the movies, giving up our workouts was non-negotiable. What was happening nationally was also happening locally. Charlie Moody, general manager of Recycled Cycles-Bicycles & Fitness in Fort Collins, said they saw a notable uptick in home fitness equipment sales at the start of the pandemic. The top sellers were ‘spin-style bikes’—commonly found in spin classes, and recumbent (reclining) stationary bikes, and both continue to be popular today. “Then and now, our customers tell us that they love the convenience of being able to roll out of bed, hop on their bikes and get their workouts in first thing. Having our equipment in their homes saves them
time and effort because it lets them workout on their schedule, any time of the day or night,” Moody said.
EXERCISE APPS AND ONLINE CLASSES
Access to technology has also facilitated home workouts. We now have the ability to participate in yoga classes being held in Hawaii, or get a running coach based in the United Kingdom, all from the comfort of our living rooms. There is also a wide array of (often free) apps designed to keep us moving. Mapmywalk.com, for example, lets you easily locate nearby walks, set personal goals, track your progress, and it even has an audio feedback option to help push you up the hill or pick up your pace. The C25K 5K Trainer app is designed for those who are ready to leave the couch (C25K translates to ‘couch to 5K’) and become proficient enough joggers to run 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) in a timespan of eight weeks.
The program starts out with walking and gradually ratchets the user up to jogging. The Yoga Studio app enables users to access more than 100 yoga meditations and take classes for all levels and intensities. Their videos can also be downloaded, enabling users to take a class without internet access. And the 7-Minute Chi app teaches Tai-Chi, an ancient form of movement that helps improve balance, strength, flexibility and range of motion. Tai-Chi is particularly suited to older adults who are new to exercise, recovering from surgery or injury, or are getting back to exercising after a lengthy period of time. These apps are just a tiny sampling of the myriad available online.
VIRTUAL PERSONAL TRAINING
Anastasia Kelly of Anastasia Kelly Fitness, based in Fort Collins, is a certified personal trainer, yoga instructor and certified menstrual
cycle coach, who works with clients both in-person and virtually. Kelly, who started her business in the early stages of the pandemic, said that meeting with people virtually enabled her to provide the coaching and support they needed, while keeping them safe from the virus. After gyms reopened, some of her clients opted to keep meeting with her virtually. “I had clients who really weren’t comfortable returning to gyms so working with them virtually allowed me to accommodate their preference.” Kelly has also worked with clients who live in rural areas miles away from the nearest gym. “I love that I can work with people anywhere and everywhere. I also have a lot of clients who work from home. Working with me virtually helps them save time during their work day, which makes it easier for them to keep up with their fitness goals. And they appreciate not having to deal with drive time and traffic.”
Kelly said that virtual training has also been wonderful for her clients who have ‘gym anxiety’ (yes, it’s a thing). “I’ve had clients who are uncomfortable going to the gym, and I understand that—gyms can be intimidating. Working one-on-one helps my clients gain the confidence they need to go to the gym, which provides access to more equipment as well as a community that’s focused on health and self-improvement.
IN-HOME PERSONAL TRAINING
Gina Riggle, certified personal trainer, provides one-on-one personal training in her clients’ homes. Riggle, who started her business less than a year ago said she could see that many older adults were not benefitting from their gym memberships or group classes because neither provided that one-
on-one guidance. “I used to work in a gym and noticed that a lot of older adults would come in and maybe walk on a treadmill for 10 minutes, look at the gym equipment, and turn around and leave. They needed more personal attention and coaching.” With these things in mind, Riggle, who specializes in training for people aged 55 and up (her oldest client was 102!), stays busy through word-of-mouth referrals. “There’s really a lot of need in our community for this kind of personalized training. My clients love the convenience of being able to be at home, and it’s the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. It was definitely a niche that needed to be filled.”
Riggle focuses on balance and stretching, some light weight resistance training, and helps people regain mobility and strength after injury or surgery. “It’s very individualized,” she said. “Some clients do their entire workouts in a chair. Others work out on the floor, using rubberized bands, rubber balls, or their own body weight to work out. It’s never one size fits all.” Riggle recently worked with a woman who had booked a bucket list backpacking trip to Europe and then soon after injured her knee so badly that she had to have knee replacement surgery. Riggle worked with her after her surgery to strengthen the leg, improve
Putting one foot in front of the other
According to the Arthritis Foundation, a brisk, 30-minute walk, five times per week, provides these health benefits:
• Lowers risk of heart disease
• Reduces risk of stroke
• Lowers blood pressure
• Strengthens muscles
• Helps retain bone mass
• Improves mood and sleep
• Supports joint health
• Reduces Alzheimer’s risk
ankle mobility and help her walk with good balance and symmetry. Her client went on her trip, climbed the stairs of ancient castles, averaged 20,000 steps per day, and had the trip of a lifetime. “That’s why I do what I do,” Riggle said. “I want all of my clients to be able to live the lives they want without limitation.”

Part ners in Medicare
on your side? Insurance companies partner with agents like us because of our connection with our clients, holding educational events, and because we answer so many of your very important questions about using your plans.
Are you receiving Medicare benefits either because of age or disability? Does your Healthcare plan confuse or intimidate you? In a time of life where we want to relax and enjoy the good things, are you stuck trying to decipher what plans to choose, and where to go to get your questions answered?
Using an agency can help you focus on the things important to your specific life situation. It’s true, you don’t need to use an agent to work with you on your Medicare coverages, but did you know there is no cost to you to have an agent
As an independent agency, we strive to sort through the madness of Medicare coverage, studying the ins and outs of many different plan types to give you the information you need to make a decision for you. Just as your shoes are not a fit for your neighbor, it is unlikely that your neighbor knows enough about your history, expectations of coverage, and individual risk comfort level to help you understand what plan will work well for you. That is where Trozan Insurance Agency fits in as your Partner in Medicare.
We answer your questions on current coverages, and review new options that fit your ever-changing needs: How should your plan work? Is it working? Could there be something better? Oftentimes
you are swimming in more questions than answers. Calling 800 numbers, or going to specific insurance company websites will bring many unwanted emails and phone solicitations. Being your local resource, we give you the information and tools to wade through the mess of information by partnering with you to find the policies that fit your particular needs.
Helping to educate our clients, and the community, in general, is very important to us. We do this through our website (www.trozaninsurance.com), online seminars (“webinars”), one-onone meetings either via phone, zoom, or in person, and through live events at the Better Business Bureau of Northern Colorado and Wyoming.
Beyond Medicare options, we also provide travel coverages, dental, vision, home care, and final expense and life policies to help you enjoy this season of life with more confidence and security.
We’d welcome the opportunity to talk with you to see how we can come alongside you as your partner in Medicare and beyond.

Giving Back
Linda L. OsmundsonVolunteerism—One woman’s road to success
WHEN JEANNE HOAG TURNED 19, SHE SEARCHED for an airline that hired younger women. Braniff accepted her. At her physical, the doctor said she didn’t reach the minimum height of 5’3”. “Stretch,” he told her several times until she made it. A year later Jeanne left Braniff to get married. Once divorced, she returned home to Denver from Texas to raise her four sons “I volunteered for the boys’ schools and sport organizations.”
With her youngest off to college, Jeanne said, “I was always volunteering, even if it was just for a small amount of time.” She worked for a foundation and discovered Denver’s Safe House for Women. She answered the phone, gave information/advice, picked up women who needed a safe place and handled resident’s requests. As a Molly Brown House volunteer, she dressed in period clothing and gave tours.
Jeanne moved from Denver to Fort Collins in 1999 and offered her services to the Poudre School Volunteer office.
Seventeen years ago, Jeanne married Bob Edmondson. She and Bob volunteered to teach Microsoft Office at the Education and Life Training Center. A year later, they were hired. They volunteered together at the Murphy Center for Hope. Jeanne functioned as a dedicated navigator helping residents find benefits. She sometimes helped solve residents’ personal problems, did laundry, worked the front desk and/or served food.
In June 2022, Jeanne realized most senior activities/programs were geared toward ages 55-65. Because 80-yearolds face different issues (medical, financial, emotional), she founded an 80s group. “We want to understand the changes in our bodies, minds and
feelings. It’s important to note this group is not about death or dying. It’s about bringing fun, laughter and understanding into our lives.”
Seventy-year-olds wanted to join, so, Jeanne opened membership to them. The center capped members at 28, but she hopes they’ll raise that number. She conducts meetings twice a month—one social and the other entertainment/ education. She’s engaged a comedian, physical therapist and Alzheimer’s Association’s regional director Angel Hoffman. Attendance varies since members bring friends.
“I am so involved with the Fort Collins Senior Center, I don’t have
time to volunteer anywhere else, except some one-day gigs here and there.”
Jeanne represents the center as a member of Fort Collins Senior Advisory Board (SAB). “The mission of SAB’s board is to serve in an advisory capacity to the city council on programs and policies that help aging citizens live full and interesting lives, and continue to contribute and share the life of the community.”
Jeanne’s interesting life included a recent Iceland trip to view the Northern Lights. They didn’t appear, so that goal remains on her bucket list.
Jeanne Hoag is a small 87-year-old dynamo. Keep it up, Jeanne!
