DON’T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME IT SEEMS THAT WE ARE on our way to the new normal. While we all discovered countless ways to cope during the past year, biking may sit at the top for northern Colorado. Retail sales were up 62 percent as we discovered, or rediscovered, the perfect pandemic pastime. But, like any New Year’s resolution, will you remember how good it felt to get on the road or trail once our old modes of transportation and recreation activities are back in the mix? “I believe that 30-40 percent of new cyclists will maintain that habit and their bikes in 2021,” says Schuyler Gantert, owner of Road 34 Bike Shop and Tavern. “It gives us all hope that the industry and local shops will stay strong in 2021.” Other shop owners in the region echo this same sentiment. Trail access continues to grow across the area. Technology and hybrid options abound as well. Check out Lea Hanson’s story on e-bikes and Scott Titterington’s story on gravel-road rides. The Big Bike Directory tells you where to find all things bike and gives you some ideas on riding companions. Finally, check out what’s new and support the many advertisers—familiar names for many of you, new friends for those who discovered cycling last year. “We’re optimistic about 2021 and beyond,” Eric Drake at Drake Cyclery concludes. “The area is growing, and we’ve already seen our 2020 customers come back for tune-ups and gear this spring” At the least, don’t you forget about the fresh air and good times cycling provided this past year. There’s just no replacing the feeling you get when riding a bike. Best, Greg Hoffman Publisher

POWER BOOST

Join the electric-bike revolution LEA HANSON

E-BIKES ARE INCREASING IN popularity faster than manufacturers can keep up. They are especially popular with those who are not avid cyclists already and want a little help when faced with hills, headwinds, or commuting with heavier loads or cargo. For commuters, e-bikes not only offer a faster point to point than cars do, since you expend less power, you sweat less. In other words, you can avoid the lycra and e-bike to work in a suit and skip the visit to the company locker room before clocking in. However, riding garb isn’t what most consider to be the most valuable selling point. Unlike an electric car, which requires special charging stations, e-bikes often charge themselves while pedaling, and even when you’re doing more 10

| RiDE

riding than pedaling, batteries are now so light, riders can easily carry a spare. Electric bikes are also wonderful for commuting, says Colleen O’Connor, sales associate at Pedego in Fort Collins. “They are often low-maintenance, quiet, don’t require a special licensing (for most models), and have the capabilities to travel long distances on a single battery charge.”

TYPES OF E-BIKES

E-bikes can come in many styles, from commuter bikes to full-suspension mountain bikes, and everything in between. An e-bike motor works by automatically switching on the (quiet) motor when you pedal. There are two different types of motors: motors that are in the crank and motors that are in your rear hub. Both types have their pros

GUIDE TO NORTHERN COLORADO BICYCLING CULTURE AND EVENTS

and cons—it all depends on the type of riding you’re planning on doing. O’Connor agrees. She says, “Anyone from avid cyclists to complete beginners will enjoy the extra power boost of an e-bike. And e-bikes meet the rider at their physical capacity, thus opening up the cycling world to many individuals who otherwise could or would not ride a bike.” Pedego both sells and rents e-bikes. O’Connor says, “In a nutshell, e-bikes offer energy-efficient transportation with the same health benefits as a normal bicycle.” E-bikes are especially beneficial for those who have thought cycling is no longer something their body can do. If you experience knee pain or exercise-induced asthma for example, electric bikes can breathe new life into the sport of cycling.

COMMUNITY ACTION

According to Good Turn Electric Cycles (https://goodturncycles.org/), “Colorado is one of the few places that has acknowledged specific regulation of e-bikes based on the class system. Our governmental systems have listened and recognized that a class 1 e-bike is no different from a traditional bicycle.” Therefore, it is up to e-bike riders to model how communities and decision-makers can safely and effectively allow electric bikes access to trails. The best way to do this is to get involved with some local cycling advocacy groups. O’Connor of Pedego says community members and decision-makers should create and distribute content revolving around laws and regulations regarding

electric bike usage. She says, “This will educate the public on the proper etiquette expected and where riders are and are not allowed. There may be an increase in e-bike riders as warmer weather emerges and it’s important to inform the public about the rules to avoid confusion.” Options for this type of communication include signs, in-news publications, or online communication. Community members can also seek general information regarding e-bikes from the Internet or electric bike retailers around town; retailers who sell and rent e-bikes are well-equipped to explain rules as well as misconceptions. Community leaders should also take initiative to lead policy change. In 2020, Larimer County conducted a study on e-bikes at www.larimer. org/naturalresources/e-bike-study. The study provided an opportunity to collect data to assess safety, trail experience impacts, public opinion, and trail etiquette awareness as they relate to e-bike use on natural surface trails. Opportunities were available for the general public and riding community to submit input via website and social media platforms.

MOVING FORWARD

O’Connor says their e-bike customers are primarily casual or novice riders. She says, “Currently, our most common demographic is customers over the age of 50 who want to bike but need some assistance.” Hopefully, demographics will only continue to expand. E-bikes are excellent for physical rehabilitation, customers of all ages e-bike to accommodate their ailments. As the popularity of electric bikes grows, e-bike retailers and enthusiasts hope to see veteran riders explore this market. Electric bikes provide an excellent way to bike far longer than a normal bike and there is a wide array of specialty electric bikes that cater to more experienced riders’ needs.

FOCO FONDOFEST 6am-5pm, July 25 New Belgium Brewery www.focofondo.com

Join hundreds of riders for this RICK ARNESON PEDALS ONTO the city street and heads for a gravel road outside of town. He tells of a sense of abandonment as houses become fewer and fewer as do outbuildings, power lines, ditches, circular irrigation rigs. Finally, even barbed wire fences disappear, he says, and all that is left is the dome sky and a gravel road pinching down on the horizon. “The isolation scares me sometimes,” Arneson says. “Oddly, this reality seems welcome as I find myself wrapped in the urban constraints.” Arneson is part of the gravelroad-riding revolution. Riders are fleeing pavement for the tranquility and adventure of an excursion in the countryside that can range from a casual scenic outing to a full-on, should-we-try-out-that-road-andhow-are-we-going-to-make-it-backbefore-dark adventure.

THE APPEAL

Gravel draws riders for good reason. “Gravel accommodates a wide range of riders,” says Rick Woy, owner of Phoenix Cyclery in Fort Collins. “People are fed up with or afraid of traffic, which is pretty much gone on gravel roads except for the occasional farm implement or crazy truck driver.” Arneson and his riding partners began the switch to gravel rides 10 years ago as they discovered that they

annual epic group gravel ride. A fondo is a giant party on wheels where competition and camaraderie meet to create a riding experience like no other, not to mention the killer post-ride party. Choose family-friendly 12- or 25-mile routes or challenge yourself with the rolling 50-mile route or the ultimate Bite the Bullet 100-mile gravel fondo. Afterward enjoy the FondoFest festival full of food trucks, vendors, bike-demos, live music, and activities for the kids. A portion of profits support after-school and summer programs through Safe Routes to School, an FC Bikes program. Check the website for monthly training rides.

could still push themselves as they did with their road rides. “Gravel riders were doing the same,” Arneson says, “just a little slower with better snacks, less spandex and a strong sense of self-reliance.”

NEW PLACES

Gravel gives riders a whole new palette of places to ride—places that feel safer than busy roads and makes a different kind of rider experience. “People have been riding Rist Canyon and Masonville for decades,” says Zack Allison, owner, along with his wife Whitney, of FoCo Fondo, Bikes Sports and Gravel Graceland. “Now, you see people riding Cherokee Park road, Prairie Divide, Dead Man Pass…roads as

beautiful as Poudre Canyon with few to no cars around.” These places are in our backyard, he says, and gravel bikes allow that exploration and keep cycling fresh.

ANATOMY OF A GRAVEL BIKE

The first gravel bikes were modifications of road bikes and mountain bikes that met somewhere in the middle. Riders wanted the speed of a road bike and the control of a mountain bike. Manufacturers are building gravel-specific bikes now. “With a quick look, a gravel bike looks like a road bike,” says Woy, “but the tires are wider and a bit more more aggressive. Handlebars might be wider for control and maybe flared with two chainrings on the front and 11

to 12 on the back.” Supply is a problem as it is with all things bicycle right, now. During COVID-19, bicycling in all categories has surged, here and around the world, putting pressure on a supply chain that starts with materials such as carbon and continues through manufacturing capability as component makers and others run factories nonstop to meet global demand. “Get out and buy your bike early,” Woy says. “Or fix up what you have and start talking about the new toy, but we might not be able to get that in for six or seven months!” Until this past fall Rick Arneson has been riding Big Red, a 1977 Takara that he had in college. He added some 1.5-inch tires and some nice components he had around. In October he switched to a ride designed for gravel, an RLT9 Steel bike designed and built by Niner, a Fort Collins company. “It’s a joy to ride,” Arneson says. The best gravel bikes address vibration with compliant frame and fork design and materials, plush low-pressure tubeless tires, fastshifting drive trains, comfortable flat or drop bars, light-weight and strong wheels with disc brakes, Arneson elaborates. The fit of the bike should be carefully addressed to assure comfort over long rides. Be sure to consider the luggage you might find necessary for longer tours and make sure your frame has plenty of mounting points. Throw in some ruggedness and reliability and you won’t be disappointed. So if you’re a little intrigued by gravel, get out and discover where that road-less-traveled might take you.
