FALL BACK IN LOVE “MAN, ITS 75 DEGREES OUT HERE!” I called out to my riding buddy at the top of Coyote Ridge. Not an unusual exclamation on any other day except it was November 30th…a temp this local did not grow up with. Like it or not, we’re heating up here in Northern Colorado. Rather than curse the darkness or point a finger, I chose to embrace the warm temps and extend the riding season. And yes, it made the deep freeze of winter a bit more palatable. “I think the continued growth in sales and service and the climate change are intertwined,” says Schuyler Gantert of Road 34 Bike and Tavern. “ We’re seeing more customers later in the year which helps sustain us through the winter.” Combine that with the continued growth, traffic congestion and road closures and you have another year and reason to get on a bike. “There is no bad place to ride or live in Fort Collins or the area” says Eric Drake of Drake Cycles. “ We continue to see and serve new residents to the area specifically due to the cycling culture the area provides.” In this years’ issue of Ride you’ll find exactly where to ride and what to do this spring, summer and fall. Check out Theresa Baer’s Big Bike Directory on where to buy, tune and gear up for the season. The Calendar or Events will connect you to the right ride and the right time during your busy schedule. New this year is “Ride the River”, Scott Titterington’s look at the Poudre River Trail and all it has to offer. Finally, Lea Hanson encourages us to join the bike-culture revival and invites you to tap into and share your bike love. If the coming warmer temps are fueling your fire and you’re paying what I am at the pump, you’re ready to Ride! Again. Best, Greg Hoffman Publisher

BIKE LOVE FOR ALL

Join the bike-culture revival

Lea Hanson

BIKES ARE A PART OF our lives… or can be. While many in our community certainly hold their identity as a cyclist high and as a primary and salient aspect of their identity, that’s not the way it needs to be to consider yourself a bike rider. However, with any habit that is healthy for our bodies as well as the environment, bicycling is a one that very easily and often seamlessly fits into our general way of life here in Northern Colorado. Anna Kelso says, “We are SO lucky to live in a flat town 10

| RiDE

that allows us to commute, transport ourselves, and haul trailers around all while accessing trails from [most of] our homes with only a short ride.” Anna Kelso, Community Outreach Coordinator, Bike Fort Collins (https://bikefortcollins.org/) has done the job for over two years, and prior to that, she held a number of similar roles in bicycle advocacy for more than 15 years. If she knows one thing, it’s bicycle advocacy at the community level. Before joining us here in

GUIDE TO NORTHERN COLORADO BICYCLING CULTURE AND EVENTS

Northern Colorado, Kelso worked at the League of American Bicyclists in DC. “When I started to plan for my next move,” she says, “I knew I would only entertain living in a highly ranked bicycle-friendly community. That ended up being here in Fort Collins.”

WHAT IS BICYCLE ADVOCACY?

Loosely speaking, bicycle advocacy is about creating bicycle safety, education, and encouragement around bicycle riding and promoting and

of how relevant bicycle advocacy feels… communities tend to go through cycles (pun intended) and the fact we’re coming out of a pandemic impacts this greatly. For example, Kelso says, “People bought a lot of bikes during COVID. And now we’re looking at opportunities to come back together after the pandemic and it’s amazing that bikes are a part of that.” And while it may not have gone anywhere in spirit, bike culture certainly has been muted the past few years. But guess what? It’s back! “It’s almost like there is a revival happening,” Kelso says. “We have more people than ever who are bike owners… add that to the ravenous appetite of people wanting to gather and be together…. it’s the perfect storm for reviving bike culture.” Community leaders and bicycle advocates all over Northern Colorado are finally confident to plan new and exciting events once again for community members to experience and love.

EVERYONE IS INVITED

creating a bicycle-friendly culture at a community level. Kelso loves the many ways people experience bike culture in Northern Colorado. She says, “I love getting to be at the intersection of it all. I love that the culture here is vibrant and rich in history. When we come together, it’s an amazing Venn diagram… sometimes the worlds overlap and sometimes they don’t.”

BIKE CULTURE AND ITS CYCLES

There are national trends in terms

Bike culture is hip, and so are you. Feeling part of the group is an essential part of trying any new thing and it’s not easy if you’re worried you might not fit in. The great thing about Northern Colorado is the diversity within and layers of the culture that surround biking. No one needs a certain brand or type of bike, the right outfit, or even to know anyone to attend an event or visit a bike shop to make that first step toward integrating bicycling into your life. “There are so many ways to love bikes here,” Kelso says, “no matter a person’s interest and level of commitment, there is something for them.” Check out this guide for events, ideas on bicycle-friendly destinations, bike shops, clubs and groups and a bike calendar.

RIDE ON!

Add biking to your life. It’s easy to get started. ATTEND EVENTS

There are lots of events you can dabble with and meet new people. (https://bikefortcollins.org/ bike-events/) BIKE SOCIALLY FIRST

It’s pretty easy to hop on a bike for a leisure ride with a friend for coffee. Start with fun and it will feel fun! READ COMMUNITY TRAIL MAPS

Start close to home! Getting familiar with the trails that exist in your community and your neighborhood will give you a very realistic idea of what types of riding is most easily accessible. SET SMALL GOALS FOR CHANGE

Do little things that lead to big things. Bike to work once a week, replace one car trip with a bike trip each week, bike with your kids/family to a park once a month, and more!

h t e e r Cach o l p Ex e WHEN I LEAVE MY HOUSE TO RIDE to downtown Fort Collins, I have two choices. One is direct, the other curvy; one has exhaust and honking horns, the other fresh air and bird songs; one requires constant vigilance and heightened alertness, the other requires mere presence; one leaves me tired, the other refreshes me. It takes a little longer to pedal downtown when I take the Poudre River Trail, but I don’t care. Just knowing that I’m going to have that half hour of fluttering trees, honking geese, gurgling riffles, waving grasses and smiling passersby changes my view of the

entire day. That is the healing, affirming nature of nature. A ride on the Poudre River Trail is time spent in a corridor of life that surrounds the Cache la Poudre River. From its western terminus at Watson Lake State Wildlife Area in Bellvue to its eastern end at Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley, the Poudre River Trail connects one open space area after another in a mosaic of life.
