ABOUT THE COVER: Abigail and Dylan Demyanek represent Fort Collins on this year’s cover from atop Horsetooth Rock. Wrap them in FoCo-based Topo Designs clothing and gear, and the picture is complete. BASE CAMP
Fort Col ins Is it the 300 days of sunshine? Or the snow-capped mountains, idyllic lakes and clear-running rivers? Or maybe it’s the great patios and local brews? Opinions differ. What is it that makes Fort Collins the best place to linger? And why is it the best base camp for exploring this magic region? For some it’s the vibrant town and the local eateries, pubs and boutiques. Others come for the nearly two-dozen craft breweries. Some say it’s whitewater rafting or mountain biking and hiking. Or maybe the dynamic history that is still being made every day here. Once you discover Fort Collins and the surrounding area, you’ll feel the pull. Somehow you’ll end up on a bicycle, laughing and pedaling to your next destination or to no place in particular. You’ll find yourself on a patio or at a music venue or soaking wet on a whitewater raft. So, set up your base camp here and explore this magic region from the town that is so picturesque that even Disneyland copied it.

Public spaces
Fresh air
Wander through Old Town Square. Look around from your seat on a blue chair at a blue table. Kids climb on the playground sculptures and run through spouts of water. Meander past shops and cafes. Grab a cup of coffee on your way to a quiet table at Oak Street Plaza. With a little luck, someone will be jamming on one of the locally painted pianos or a band will be brightening up the square.
We love to hang outside on patios and rooftops. Relax a moment on the cozy roof-top bar at Mainline Ale House or the iconic fountain patio at Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant, locally known as The Rio. Or chill on Old Town Square with a scratchbaked pastry and a hand-crafted coffee at Little Bird Bakeshop or at one of the many other spots on the plaza. The choices are endless, so just pick a table and have a seat.
Shopping paradise
History Buff
If you’re a shopper, you’ve arrived in a kind of paradise. Want to sample 50 kinds of olive oil? Got it. Try on some boutique fashions? Check. Unique outdoor gear? Yep. Colorado mountain souvenirs? Endless. Lavender soaps and creams? Yummy. And most of these shops are locally owned, so you just might be chatting with the proprietor at any time.
Stroll back in time with a tour of the historic buildings. The Old Town district is on the National Register of Historic Places, was named a Preserve America City by the White House and is also one of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Pick up a brochure at the Visit Fort Collins Visitor Center at 19 Old Town Square.
DOWNTOWN DRIVING TIP: Stay alert…Fort Collins prides itself on its walk-ability and bicycle-friendly atmosphere. Remember to share the road. Street parking is free for 2 hours—stay awhile and use the parking garages. They are free the first hour and $1 for every hour thereafter.

Grab a bite and a beer and shoot some pool at Coopersmith’s Poolside. Slip downstairs to Ace Gillett’s on College Avenue and sip a cocktail while you enjoy the 3-piece jazz combo in the corner. Or just drop into the first place that grabs your attention. Want to stay outside? Grab some street-cart food and wander around…maybe stroll down a lamp-lit lane to see where it takes you.

x Under your nose
Cattail Chorus Natural Area
An ideal destination for fans of wildlife watching.
You don’t have to go very far to find some open space. There’s plenty of it right here in town. A great tool is the Natural Areas Finder at www.fcgov.com/natural areas/finder. You can search parks and natural areas by activity. Descriptions include maps of the area and related links. For current trail conditions at City and County parks, check www.nocotrailreport.org. Give these outings a try. u Walk or pedal a paved trail—try Cathy Fromme Prairie Natural Area, Spring Creek Trail or the Poudre River Trail. u Throw a disc—choose from two 18-hole courses: Edora or Aggie Greens Disc Golf Course. u Splish, splash—jump into the big, wet playground that is City Park Outdoor Pool or get doused by dancing water spouts at Spring Canyon, Oak Street Plaza, Old Town Square and Fossil Creek parks. u Visit a garden—stroll through hundreds of labeled pots at the CSU Flower Trial Gardens or wander around the Gardens on Spring Creek where you’ll find the Children’s Garden, the Garden of Eatin’, a Rock Garden and more. u Hang out at a dog park— let Rover rove at one of the three dog parks in town: Fossil Creek (south end), Spring Canyon (midtown), and Soft Gold (north end). u Swing & slide—have some fun at Inspiration Playground at Spring Canyon Park, designed for kids of all abilities and built to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and support braces. u Play a round of golf—swing those sticks on three city courses... open year ’round unless there’s too much snow on the ground. fcgov.com/golf.

Farther afield You have lots of wild places to visit just minutes away. Get into the hills west of town at Horsetooth Reservoir and the surrounding parks and trails. Where to start? The reservoir itself: charter a pontoon boat and putt around, rent some kayaks on the north end or a standup
22 | VisitFortCollins.com
paddleboard, or even swim at one of the designated beaches. Around the reservoir, find sandstone crags for world-class bouldering and rock climbing; rolling and challenging trails for walking, running, and mountain biking. Some places will cost you a few dollars to visit and some are free. Check out
Lory State Park, Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, east side trails and crags, and Blue Sky trail to the south. And one more thing: Horsetooth Reservoir placed third on the 2016 America’s Best Lakes list by Foursquare users. Head north 25 miles for a different kind of great outing at Soapstone
Prairie Natural Area and, bordering it, Red Mountain Open Space. The Soapstone area has miles of hiking and equestrian trails, cultural history that goes back more than 12,000 years and is home to a herd of genetically pure American bison. At Red Mountain, discover red-rock canyons and bluffs with 15 miles of
trails for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. Both areas are open from March 1 to November 30.
A DAY IN THE
MOUNTAINS For peace, quiet and an adventure day, west of Fort Collins offers some magical terrain. Take your pick: meander up the Cache la Poudre Canyon or zip up to the high peaks. MOUNTAIN TRAVEL TIP #1 Cell phone service can be spotty to nonexistent in the canyons. Before you head out, try loading a map of the area on your phone or tablet. Or stop in at one of our visitor information centers for a map and some friendly directions.
MOUNTAIN TRAVEL TIP #2 Check your gas tank before you head up the Cache la Poudre Canyon. You can top off at Ted’s Place where Hwy 14 leaves Hwy 287. Options are few and far between after that.
Arthur’s Rock
A breath-taking hike with a beautiful view.
Cache la Poudre River Canyon and Red Feather Lakes It’s Wild and Scenic up here…really, it’s Colorado’s only river with that national designation. Turn west up Hwy 14 off Hwy 287 at Ted’s Place. Pick a trail, any trail—stretch your legs, free your mind and breathe that pine air! u Mishawaka Inn—Best deck...ever. Grab a bite and beverage at this idyllic, 100-year-old eatery and concert venue. u Cameron Pass area—Continue west on Hwy 14 until you arrive at Cameron Pass. Go for a hike and check out the Noghu Crags and the Moose Museum. For the next stops, head north up the steep switchbacks on County Road 69 by the town of Rustic toward Red Feather Lakes. Take the quick way back to town down Red Feather Lakes Road toward Livermore and Hwy 287. u Shambhala Mountain Center—Follow in the footsteps of the Dalai Lama, who visited here in 2006, to the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya. Visitors are welcome. u Red Feather Lakes area—In town, grab an ice cream cone and poke around the shops, then find some mountain fun in Roosevelt National Park. Take Deadman Road to the Deadman Fire lookout to see captivating mountain ranges in all directions. Pull into Beaver Meadows Resort Ranch for fishing, horseback riding, disc golf and more.
Rocky Mountain National Park area The true Rocky Mountain high is just an hour up the hill. Take I-25 south and turn west on Hwy 34 to follow the Big Thompson River. Check road conditions before heading up. u Fall Creek Road and Trail Ridge Road—With panoramic 360-degreee views, TRR is the highest paved highway in the country. Pop on over to Grand Lake. Try this: ascend via Old Fall River Road and come down Trail Ridge Road. u Rocky Mountain National Park—Discover elk, big horn sheep, spectacular peaks, quiet lakes, inviting trails, and more.
The big scenic drive-around Leave early. Drive time is six hours and you’re going to want to stop, stretch and look around…a lot! Drive up Hwy 34 west into Rocky Mountain National Park then up and over Trail Ridge Road (open summer to early fall) to Granby. Head north on Hwy 125 to Walden and then turn east on Hwy 14 over Cameron Pass and down the Cache la Poudre Canyon. Can be done in reverse.

Creative Spaces
x
Art in the heart Welcome to our vibrant arts culture!
Fort Collins is just one big gallery waiting for you to discover its bold exhibits and hidden treasures. Come see why the historic area of town has been officially certified as The Downtown Fort Collins Creative District by the state of Colorado. AS YOU WANDER AROUND TOWN, drop into a private gallery or the Fort Collins Museum of Art on College Avenue. Or get into the act yourself at Pinot’s Palette where you can sip a glass of wine while you paint.
Performing arts Catch a performance at one of the Lincoln Center stages where national and local acts play the main stage and local troupes, such as Open Stage and Debut Theatre, perform in the more intimate theater. Or check out the schedule at Bas Bleu Theatre, a
beloved venue which was reclaimed as a performance space from a historic machine shop. Want to make a night of it? Midtown Arts Center features musicals along with dinner.
Music and dance On the classical end, we have an opera company, a symphony and a ballet troupe. Catch a performance. Try this: on the last Sunday of each month, sip a beverage at local-favorite Avagadro’s Number, and watch people sing…opera stuff! Flip to page 32 for concerts, festivals and venues.
Arts and Drafts Find local filmmakers, artists, and musicians at some of the unique venues around town like the Lyric Cinema Cafe or the Downtown Artery. Grab a bite to eat and a local brew or spirit and enjoy some independent, homegrown talent.
The Gallery Walk Do this. On the first Friday evening of every month, downtown galleries keep their doors open so that you can stroll from place to place and admire the art. Of course, you can drop in anytime, any day otherwise.

Pianos About Town—you’ll see them and hear them— pianos painted by artists and set around town for people to admire and play. You can even watch the artists paint them in Old Town Square. Transformer Cabinet Murals—this is a double win! Local artists paint the cabinets, which helps reduce graffiti. Find a brochure at the downtown Visit Fort Collins center or go to www.fcgov.com/artspublic to see current artists and their projects.

Beginner, expert? It doesn’t matter. Need a guide, some instruction, or to rent some gear? Fort Collins area stores and outfitters have you covered. Rent or buy everything you need from those who know the area best.
Mountain biking We have trails…rocky and technical to smooth and flowy. You can even find some sweet mellow roads in the forest for a family outing. It’s up to you. Hammer in the morning, cruise in the afternoon. Head west to Horsetooth Reservoir where you’ll find Lory State Park, Horsetooth Mountain Park, and the Blue Sky Trail. It’s one big playground! Of course, you can find endless terrain in the Cache la Poudre Canyon.
Hiking and trail running It’s magic all year round here. Do you like loops? summits? forests? meadows? Yes, yes, yes and yes! So for the quick, just wantto-get-out walk or run, pop up to the trails around Horsetooth Reservoir. Want to commit a little more time, get a little higher? Head up Cache la Poudre River Canyon. And for the big day…hit the high trails in Rocky Mountain National Park. Take a peek at www.nocotrail report.org to see trail conditions.
Whitewater sports Mad dog, Pinball, Pineview Falls…just a few of the rapids you can run on Colorado’s only nationally designated Wild & Scenic river. So strap on a PFD (personal flotation device… what they call a life jacket on the river), buckle up your helmet and grab a paddle for a ride you won’t soon forget. Sign on with a company for a guided rafting trip, rent an inflatable ducky or bring your own boat. The access is easy for these action-packed runs from Class 2 family-friendly bumps to Class 4 drops to Class 5 creekin’.
Winter activities Many of our outdoor staples serve double duty as temperatures drop. Hiking trails become

snow-shoeing routes and Sheldon Lake at City Park hosts ice fishing and ice skating. Or, zip up to snow country near Cameron Pass and around Red Feather Lakes for a spectacular backcountry adventure. Choose a rolling trail or venture up above tree line for some backcountry bowls. You can even ski or snowshoe into a yurt for a night or two. And you have to try this: lift-served inner-tubing. Beaver Meadows Resort has 12 tubing runs along with traditional pond skating and groomed cross-country ski trails. Some outdoor adventurers might argue that winter is when Fort Collins really shines, but we’re pretty partial to it in all of its seasonal splendor.
Wildlife watching Have you ever seen a moose up close? How about a big horn sheep, elk or bald eagle? They’re out there. For big fauna, cruise up the Cache la Poudre Canyon. Explore Laramie
River Road or pop over to the other side of the pass and visit the State Park Moose Visitor Center complete with a moose sculpture made by the Gueswel family of Poudre Park. And never forget, these are wild animals— not pets, not zoo critters—so don’t approach them, don’t try to feed them and, absolutely, no selfies with them!
Camping & Picnicking Brats sizzling on the grill, the river bubbling 20 feet away, the kids tossing lures into that big hole behind a rock, and the sweet pine air. It just doesn’t get any better. Find a campsite or picnic spot as close as Horsetooth Reservoir or head out for a casual adventure up Cache la Poudre River Canyon or near Red Feather Lakes. Camping options range from primitive, hike-in, to maintained and RV-ready. Pick a public or private campground for just the right picnic location.
Rock climbing Stick your hand in a crack or crimp onto a side-pull hold as you ease up the sandstone on the east side of Horsetooth Reservoir. Check out the world-class bouldering at Rotary Park and Piano Boulders or grab a rope for some bolted-anchor, top-rope climbing at Duncan’s Ridge. Ready for bigger stuff? Head up to Lumpy Ridge or even the high peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Fly-fishing Can you tie a fly onsite to match the hatch and then present it ohso gently? Fish, miles of streams, creeks and high-mountain lakes until you run out of tippet. Plenty of guides can help you learn to wet a fly, too. Stop into world-renowned St. Peter’s Fly Shop in Old Town for local information or to hire a guide. Check out the Blue Ribbon water on the Cache la Poudre River and the high lakes farther up.

If ever there was a city you’d want to eat your way through from morning till the wee hours, Fort Collins is it! Devour an entire Dining Guide beginning on page 70.
Northside noshing North Fort Collins eateries include those in the downtown area where food and beverage choices abound. You can start your day with breakfast at the Silver Grill. Its peppy atmosphere complements its menu of traditional favorites prepared with creative twists. Another option is The Little Bird Bakeshop, with 100-percent made-fromscratch pastries, and light breakfasts. If your morning meal won’t be complete without lots of meat, the Choice City Butcher & Deli might be the place for you. Northside noon-time noshing often is enjoyed al fresco, as so many of Old Town’s restaurants feature patio dining. Enjoy views from Coopersmith’s Pub & Brewing’s sidewalk patio, as well as the establishment’s traditional tavern temptations. Hide away on the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant’s back patio and sip one of its legendary Rio Margs—if you dare to indulge early in the day! When your supper bell rings, there’s still plenty of savory selections to be enjoyed. Tasty Harmony and Restaurant 415 will please people with a more plant-based palate. Bisetti’s Ristorante, one of Fort Collins’ oldest family-run eateries, features Old-World style Italian cuisine. Fish, Jax Fish House and Oyster Bar or Jeju Sushi and Japanese Restaurant will suit you if you’re feeling a little fishy. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll find plenty of places where you can indulge it, like Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop, The Chocolate Café, Kilwin’s Chocolate & Ice Cream, Nuance Chocolate, Walrus Ice Cream just to name a few.

Midtown munching In the middle latitudes of town, you have great choices where you can break your nighttime fast. Say bonjour to the day at La Creperie & French Bakery of Fort Collins where croissants and pastries are baked daily, and crepes are filled with the freshest ingredients. The Rainbow Restaurant near Coloado State University serves traditional, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free eats all day. Rise!, toward the east, is “A Breakfast Place” with homemade artisan creations that can be prepared vegetarian and gluten free. Rise! is owned and operated by a husband and wife who are professionally trained as a chef and pastry chef respectively, so you’re guaranteed a mouth-watering experience.
If you’re wandering around near the new Music District at College Avenue and Laurel Street, you may find yourself in Dalzell Alley, a colorful space off the beaten path with an eclectic mix of lunch spots, including Dam Good Tacos where you can grab a locally sourced, fusion-style taco, burrito or sauté, or the classic B&B Pickle Barrel Deli & Pub for an east-coast style sandwich with all the fixings, homemade soups, fresh bakery items and a local brew. Café Vino, a cozy spot in midtown, finds patrons enjoying drinks and delectable dinners made with organic ingredients. A Fortified Farm Dinner
A series of farm dinners featuring locallyproduced food prepared by local chefs
like sliders, pizza and mac and cheese. And The Moot House is a classic Fort Collins fine-dining favorite with Old English atmosphere. If you’re out west, you can really go eastern at the Hibachi Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Restaurant which serves up Asian fare with flare! If you’d rather eat stateside, Pappy’s Corner Pub is a comfortable, American-style neighborhood gathering place. East of town, The Farmhouse at Jessup Farm, a 130-year-old homestead turned chic, casual dining spot, will serve you culinary creations using ingredients from its own garden.
SoUTH FORT Collins sustenance Are you full yet? Hopefully not, because you
still have the south side to explore. Big appetites will be satiated at Doug’s Day Diner, where the food is scratch-made fresh and the helpings are large. The Egg & I’s home-style cooking is another sure bet to curb early morning cravings. Have lunch your way at Fiona’s Delicatessen and then top it off with a special treat from its bakery or old-fashioned soda fountain. If your taste buds are screaming for a more international experience, head over to the Front Range Village. Café Athens offers a dining experience that will be all Greek to you. The Himalayan Bistro’s entrees capture the exotic flavors of Nepal, Tibet and India. The Bann Thai Restaurant offers modern interpretations of classic Thai dishes.
Your international feasting doesn’t need to end after mid-day in south Fort Collins, though. The Caballero’s invite you to be their dinner guest at La Buena Vida, where traditional recipes handed down through generations of their Mochican family are prepared by Mexican chefs, and its bar serves some of the best margaritas in town. Dominic’s Bistro & Wine Bar provides a “buzzy” atmosphere, and tapas and entrees inspired by tastes from around the world. One of the newest kids on the south side of town is Otto Pint, a gas station converted into a neighborhood hangout of the best kind. Its thin-crust pizzas and selection of 40 craft beers have family and friends breaking bread and raising a pint together often.

see to believe. Be sure to ask the friendly staff in each location about their favorites.
RISE of the food trucks Sometimes it seems that this town could be called Fort Food Truck with more than sixty trucks and carts to choose from. Let’s just say if you can think of it, someone is probably making it right now. Check fortcollinsfoodtrucks.com for food-truck info including a listing of trucks and carts. Throw bikes, breweries and food trucks together and, maybe a little local live music, and you have a culture that says slow down and enjoy your day. And that’s sweet because a lot of the time you can belly up to a food cart at the brewery you’re visiting. Some breweries even post the schedules. The whole enchilada comes together at City Park every Tuesday evening from May 30 to Sept. 26 with the Food Truck 2017 Rally Series. Fifteen or more trucks, live local music and a beautiful setting. Don’t miss it. www.Focofoodtruckrally.com.

Steve Taylor
Hot Corner Concepts Anyone who’s tried to be a restaurateur in Fort Collins
knows the competition is fierce. To have staying power, you better be good or be Steve Taylor. Taylor has tastefully satisfied the appetites of diners here since 1988 when he moved to town to own and operate The Moot House. Since then, Taylor’s added three of Fort Collins other favorite eateries to his menu of fine dining establishments including Austin’s, and Big Al’s. What’s the special
www.hotcornerconcepts.com ingredient he attributes to his success? He says it’s a combination of “surrounding yourself with committed, talented people, sharing common goals and getting out of their way. Plus, we’re blessed to live in Fort Collins where CSU and Front Range Community College play such a large role in supplying good employees. I can’t imagine doing business anywhere else.”

Heather McQueen
Rebel Popcorn If a great business idea pops
into your head, you might just have to give it a go, even if it is a little corny. Just ask Heather McQueen, one of Rebel Popcorn’s owners. Homemade caramel corn is her signature dish she takes to potlucks. People love it so much that she and her good friend cooked up the idea of launching a popcorn company to satisfy people’s obvious craving for the crunchy snack. Since opening their tasting room doors in October 2015, they’ve
rebelpopcorn.com gone from having four flavors to more than 200, plus a cult following from all over the world, but a far-flung fan base won’t entice her away from the Fort. “This city has such a tight-knit community where people go out of their way to support each other. It just feels like a big warm blanket hug and that keeps me going and fills my bucket”…popcorn bucket, that is!

Loren Matthews
When Loren Matthews moved to town to take a management
position at Anheuser-Busch, she had no idea she’d fall in love twice— once with Fort Collins itself and the other with the distillation process, an evolution beyond beer brewing. Both loves led Matthews to start the Elevation 5003 Distillery in mid-town. Crediting her degree in biology and genetics, the alcohol process fascinates her. “The engineering and science behind it hits all of my interests.” But when
Elevation 5003 Distillery elevation5003.com she started dabbling with distilling, her interest turned to euphoria. The thrill she gets from crafting alcohol combined with not wanting to wait to do something she loves led her take “a huge leap of faith” to begin mashing, cooking and fermenting a variety of spirits. Elevation’s doors opened in March 2016, and since then, Matthews says she’s “been cruising and it’s been a wild ride!”

Chelsea Gressman Solarium International Hostel www.solariumhostel.com 970-599-3817 Fort Collins is a destination for travelers from near and far, but where can they stay when they want to spend more on fun than beds? Enter Kelsey Schwager and Chelsea Gressman, two young entrepreneurs and world voyagers themselves who each own and operate hip hostels in Fort Collins. Schwager,
owner of The Fernweh Inn & Hostel, says her love of Fort Collins is what led her to open a hostel in one of the city’s historic homes in the heart of town. Fernweh is a German word that describes feeling homesick for a place you’ve never been before. It also describes the atmosphere Schwager has created to help her guests satisfy that feeling. “I want people who stay with us to experience what it’s like to be a The Fernweh Inn & Hostel local. I want them www.fortcollinshostel.com to enjoy all of our 970-219-9493 big-city amenities while connecting with our sense of community and small-town feel. I want them to love
Kelsey Schwager
Fort Collins as much as I do!” Fort Collins’ born and raised Gressman wants the same for her guests at the Solarium International Hostel. When her visitors walk through the Solarium’s front door, they feel like they’ve walked through the Narnia closet into a secret jungle where the atrium’s glass ceiling lets the sun shine in. “Having stayed at so many wonderful hostels during my travels, it’s always been my dream to host others. At first, we weren’t sure a hostel would be a good fit for Fort Collins, but it turns out to be the perfect fit. People here are healthy and happy, and support local businesses and a culture of travel. It’s a good place to be.”

Lindee Zimmer Fort Collins Mural Project As an artist, Lindee Zimmer wants to create magic and fill
voids. She’s achieving both as the director of the Fort Collins Mural Project, a nonprofit organization that empowers local artists, beautifies the city and builds community through art. Her choice of art as a profession wasn’t popular with her family; they wanted her to pursue a more lucrative profession. But Zimmer believes she “…won’t be a
www.fcmuralproject.org starving artist; I’ll be a successful artist. And I believe Fort Collins can be a place not only known for bikes, beer and music, but it can become known for its vibrant visual art community.” With Zimmer painting the town all sorts of colors and her energy sparking a new appreciation for art in everyone she meets, Fort Collins’ art scene is destined to thrive.

OUR COMMUNITY
Snapshot THE
OF
essentials
FORT COLLINS IS ON A ROLL. As you travel around town, you’ll see new building projects, street infrastructure updates, wellkept parks and flower pots, public art and on and on. And underneath it all is a solid infrastructure of great healthcare, strong schools, and excellent weather.
How’s the weather? Magnificent! Generally, it’s warm in the summer…80s and 90s and sunny with afternoon showers that cool things off. Fall is magical with clear skies and cool (50s to 70s), though it can snow in September. Layers are a must. We have days in February that are 30 with snow and the next day could be 65 with sunshine. Spring is unpredictable. Rain in the morning and clear skies in the afternoon. Who knows? April through June are the wettest months.
The sun Colorado boasts over 300 days of sunshine! Bring sunglasses, sun screen, caps and a big water bottle, or maybe two or three! Heat exhaustion and sunburn can happen quickly; so tune in and play it safe.
The elevation We’re right at 5,000 feet above sea level and the further you go west the higher you get. Take it slow the first few days. Plan your active days and your days in high country for after you’ve been here a couple days if you can. If you feel nauseous or have a bad headache in the mountains, go to lower elevation. And stay hydrated!
Health care central It may be that you’re visiting Fort Collins for the cutting-edge, comprehensive health care that we are fortunate to have thriving here. The largest provider is UCHealth, which operates Poudre Valley Hospital, Medical Center of the Rockies and many
98 | VisitFortCollins.com
associated clinics. Banner Health just opened the Fort Collins Medical Center in the southeast corner of town and also operates several outpatient clinics. Kaiser Permanente is expanding in the area and recently opened a medical office here.
Senior care and housing Seniors find a continuum of care here from independent-living to assisted-living to skilled-nursing facilities. Columbine Health Systems is a locally owned network that provides care through the full spectrum of housing options along with rehabilitative care.
Education A great town needs a great school district and Poudre School District delivers with a combination of high-performing neighborhood schools and a menu of choice programs including bilingual immersion, International Baccalaureate, Expeditionary Learning, STEM and more. Many students opt to continue their education at Front Range Community College Larimer Campus offering nationally accredited classes. Students may earn Associates of Arts or Associates of Science degrees. Colorado State University is consistently ranked as a top tier university in U.S. News and World Reports rankings of “America’s Best Colleges and Universities. It is also one of the core economic and cultural drivers in Fort Collins. Read more about what it offers starting on page 51.

The extras
Let’s start with the basics: ease of getting here, venues and a variety of places to stay. Access: Fort Collins is one hour from Denver International Airport. Catch a shuttle or rent a car and make the easy drive yourself. Facilities: Take your pick between intimate settings, small and large meeting rooms, banquet rooms, full-service hotels, stages with theater seating or idyllic mountain venues. The perfect facility is here for your group. Lodging: We have it. Boutique hotels, full- and limited-service hotels, B & Bs, and hostels. Check out the Lodging listings on page 90 for specifics.
What sets Fort Collins apart from other meeting destinations? The intangibles—those things that can help make the whole event a success, those experiences that people will talk about after the conference, or the amenities that are attractive to significant others who might be accompanying participants. Fort Collins is attractive all on its own. It offers activities that help bring people together, good food and entertainment are our specialties and it’s easy to get around! Time and time again we hear attendees and meeting planners alike talk about how friendly everyone is to visitors.

A destination guaranteed to get the blood pumping and the teamwork flowing.
Planning support Staff members at Visit Fort Collins are here to help you have the best, most successful experience you can. You can start with a visit to the website: www.visitfortcollins.com. A visit to the Meeting Planners page should answer all your questions. Contact them to get your event going.
Oh, the bonding… There’s the express purpose you’re getting together, the real content of the event— two people saying, “I do,” or technical papers being presented, maybe visioning discussions. But a lot of times you’re here for more than just that, right? You can do a lot of bonding or team-building just by hanging out together and having fun. Here are a few other suggestions if you want to take it up a notch. Paddle together—When six or eight people are paddling a raft, if you don’t stroke together,

you don’t get down the river. It’s a clear metaphor with very sudden consequences, and a lot of laughter. See the listings on page 97. Escape together— Participants work as a team to find “The Missing Scientist” at Enigma Escape Rooms. This is a fascinating way to build working relationships, problem-solving skills and more. Or just have fun with the people in your party. www.enigmafortcollins.com
Pedal and, well, drink together—And on the silly, but really fun side, up to 16 of you can hire a driver and bartender and literally pedal your way around town on a bicycle bar from My Handle Bar. You’ll stop in at local breweries, cideries and wineries along the way. No experience necessary! www.myhandlebar.com. Paint together—At Pinot’s Palette studio, they have a variety of collaborative painting
activities where you get together to paint something under the direction of an artist and the inspiration of a bartender. www.pinotspalette.com/ fortcollins/corporate-events. Cook together—Cook up some project management and communications skills as your team prepares and eats some treats that you whip up under the guidance of a chef at The Cooking Studio. www.the-cooking-studio.com.

Get around,
get around
FORT COLLINS SITS IN A SWEET SPOT in northern Colorado along the Front Range about an hour north of Denver and Denver International Airport. Once you get here, it’s easy to find your way around town. Here’s a clue: foothills are to the west. You can figure it out from there. And the major streets are set up on a grid. Traffic flows pretty well most of the time and you can find parking on the street, in parking lots or parking garages. Check out the maps on the next page.
Public transportation You have to ride the MAX, the north-south spine of the TransFort system here. It’s cheap and easy, $1.25 a ride or $3 for a day pass and $10 for a week. During the day it stops every 10 minutes at the 14 stops from Downtown to the South Station just south of Harmony Road and a little less often in the evening. And 20 other bus routes connect with the Max and use the same pass. www.ridetransfort.com And one more thing that we think is pretty important: to
102 | VisitFortCollins.com
keep it as clean and green as possible, Transfort vehicles run on bio-diesel and compressed natural gas.
Bike and ride And it just gets better. The buses and the Max are designed for you to take your bike with you. So you can go multi-modal. Or hop off the Max, and hop on a bike! At many stops, and other locations around town, you can rent a bike with the automated, self-service Bike Share program. Just download the app and you’re good to go. www.fcgov.
Pay as you go You can summon a ride from Uber or Lyft. Or call Yellow Cab Taxi at 970-224-222 or use the app: zTrip.
com/transportationplanning/ bikeshare.php.
to downtown Denver. It takes around an hour and a half. www.ridebustang.com.
Getting out of town Leave the driving to the pros. Hop on the FLEX bus. You’ll be in downtown Boulder in a little over an hour, and you can explore Loveland and Longmont along the way. Rates are the same as all TransFort buses and your pass works on the FLEX, too. Rolling to downtown Denver for the day? Saddle up on the Bustang. For $10, you can ride from the Downtown or Harmony Transit Centers in Fort Collins
To and from the airport Two companies shuttle to and from the Denver International Airport starting at around $30: Green Ride Colorado, www.green rideco.com, and SuperShuttle, www.supershuttle.com/dia. For nonstop service by Supershuttle, go to: www.supershuttle.com/ locations/fortcollinsden. And for a private ride, try out Executive Comfort, www.nocoexecutive comfort.com.

This is the land of craft beer…
immerse yourself!
More than twenty breweries, and counting, have brews for you in Fort Collins. And the variety goes on, from crisp pilsners to creamy stouts and everything in between. Take in the character and setting of each tap room…some warm and cozy, others bright and breezy. It’s all part of the experience. When you’re here with a glass of beer in hand, don’t rush it. Raise that glass and admire the beer. Give it a swirl and stick your nose in the glass. Inhale the rich hop and malt aromas. Now you’re ready to savor the flavor. Take a sip and let it linger on your palate before swallowing. Clink glasses. Cheers! Welcome to the Craft Beer Capital of Colorado!

[the brew in front of you]
It is easy to see why some might feel lost when looking at a beer menu. Here are some clues that will help you decipher what a beer might taste like.
[COLOR] A fair number of beers are named after their color, and you can often make a good guess of a beer’s malt flavor just by knowing its name and seeing it in a glass.
LIGHT/PALE FLAVORS: grainy, bread-like STYLES: blonde ale, helles, Belgian-style
AMBER FLAVORS: toasty, bread crust STYLES: amber ale, amber lager
[SPECIAL INGREDIENTS] Special ingredients range in intensity, but there is usually an expectation that the brewer will aim to strike a balance. FOOD: chocolate, coffee, breakfast cereal FRUIT: raspberry, peach, cherry, orange SPICES: cinnamon, ginger, cardamom
ALES ferment at warmer temperatures and often present more yeast-derived flavors (fruity, sometimes spicy). You can safely anticipate that yeast flavors provide at least some of the flavor profile in an ale.
[FLIGHT PLAN]
BLACK
BROWN FLAVORS: toast, roasted nuts, chocolate STYLES: brown ale, Marzen, dopplebock
FLAVORS: burnt toast, dark chocolate, coffee, espresso STYLES: dry stout, robust porter, American black ale
[REGIONAL STYLE] There are exceptions, but these geographic terms offer clues about a beer’s character. GERMAN | lager with complex malt character and floral hops BELGIAN | fruity, spicy ales or sour beers ENGLISH | pale ales, porters and stouts with earthy hops AMERICAN | hop-forward beers with pine, citrus and resin flavors BELGO-AMERICAN | fruity/spicy Belgian yeast with American hops
LAGERS ferment at cooler temperatures and create a much “cleaner” beer, allowing you to taste the malt and hops more explicitly.
[YEAST] Today’s brewers are using nontraditional yeasts, blending types of yeast and using traditional yeast in untraditional ways.
When visiting a brewery many people opt for a beer sampling flight. Often breweries will supply a description sheet for their brews, which allows thirsty visitors to plan their taste journey.
NAME: This is your first clue as to the taste of the beer. ABV: Alcohol By Volume is a standard percentage measurement of how much alcohol (ethanol) is contained in a volume of liquid (beer). DESCRIPTION: A love-letter from the brewer detailing the subtleties and delights that you can expect from the beer.
}
IBU: The International Bittering Units scale, is the quantitative measurement of bitterness of the beer by the amount of iso-alpha acids present. An IBU between 20-45 is considered average with beer having an IBU of 45+ being considered very “hoppy” and bitter. COMPOSITION: Malts, hops, yeast and water are the building blocks of beer. Get to know the varieties used to brew your sample.

Jay Montez
Brewer at Odell Brewing Co. Jay Montez taps into his
passions when he taps into beer. He loves drinking it, has read just about everything written on the subject of brewing it, works for Odell Brewing Co., wants to work in the industry forever and believes “there’s a beer for everybody,” so it’s only natural he becomes a certified Cicerone. What’s that? Someone who’s deemed a highly educated beer connoisseur who knows all the styles, their ingredients, and how to brew, evaluate, serve and pair them with food. Once he brewed up the idea to pursue his Cicerone

certification, many of Montez’s colleagues asked him to lead a study group so they could join him in becoming a documented beer expert with bragging rights. But for him, becoming a Cicerone and thoroughly understanding the brewing process isn’t about prestige, “it’s about making something that makes people happy. And doing that in Fort Collins, a mecca for great beer with a population that supports it, is what it’s all about.” PHOTOS BY RICHARD HARO

Think you know
beer?
Well you can prove it by becoming a Certified Cicerone (sis-uh-rohn). You’ll spend a year or two learning the ins and outs of beer. You even have to pass a taste test!
If your server seems particularly well versed about beer, he or she might be a Certified Beer Server, a step on the way to becoming a Master Cicerone.
Certified Cicerone
Certified Beer Server
(76,000 and counting worldwide) Learn great beer service and how to talk to guests about, you guessed it, beer.
(2,600 and growing) Demonstrate excellent knowledge in beer styles, brewing procedures, how to serve and talk about beer, and how to pair beer with foods... and how to taste beer.
Advanced and Master Cicerone
(fewer than 100) Basically, master every technical and aesthetic aspect of beer and converse with professionals and consumers on their level. Oh, and be able to taste beer as a quality-control panel member.
A taste to remember
Whether this is your first time or 40th time tasting, the Fort Collins Tasting Journal is meant to help you get familiar with craft beer.
