Welcome to Ginger and Baker, celebrating Fort Collins’ community, history, creativity and pie. Our building, built in 1905, once housed the Northern Colorado Feeders Supply, a brick and mortar symbol of Fort Collins’s agricultural roots: where friendliness, ingenuity and a belief in a better future inspired farmers, ranchers and townspeople for generations. This legacy continues to be our inspiration. Ginger and Baker is a place for thoughtful, handcrafted food and goods that celebrate the season, honor their source and delight the senses. Whether you’re meeting for a cup of coffee in the Market, sitting down in the Café or the Cache for a delicious meal, hosting a holiday party or corporate celebration in the Mill Top or Wine Cellar or digging your fork into one of our fresh baked pies, you’ll always know you’re welcome.

PICTURE YOURSELF HERE

Snapshot of adventures awaiting you PICTURE YOURSELF IN charming Old Town Square, which inspired Disneyland’s Main Street USA, on a clear evening dancing to a band playing tunes that just seem right. Picture yourself on the Wild & Scenic Cache la Poudre River in a pine-scented mountain canyon paddling your heart out to get over that big wave in Pine View Falls rapid. Picture yourself swinging in a hammock at the top of a cliff as the sun sets over Horsetooth Reservoir and the sky lights up in a vibrant display. Picture yourself touring Odell Brewing and then toasting with friends as you sample a tray of lagers and ales and a brat from a food truck and tell stories about your adventures that day. Picture yourself on a cruiser bicycle riding down a paved path that winds along the babbling Spring Creek on a sunny day. Picture immersing yourself in art as you wander into and out of galleries on a Gallery Walk evening and then noticing that someone is playing one of the artist-painted Pianos about Town. Picture yourself in a cozy restaurant as you smile when the food-as-art meal is set before you paired perfectly with a locally made craft beer or spirit. This is just a snapshot of the adventures you will find when you base your excursion here, with us, in Fort Collins.

DISCOVER DOWNTOWN

Dine, stay & play Soak it up! Friendly faces, bursts of flowers, painted pianos, holiday lights, inviting alleys and the hub itself—Old Town Square. So much is waiting for you to discover downtown. Fort Collins has one of the most walkable downtowns in America. It’s so charming that Disneyland’s Main Street USA was inspired by it. On-street parking is free and easy, or choose between three convenient parking garages.

18 | VisitFortCollins.com

Blast from the past Stroll back in time with a tour of the historic buildings. The Old Town district is on the National Register of Historic Places and was named a Preserve America City by the White House. It’s also one of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations as designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Wow, right? Public spaces

locally known as The Rio. Or chill on Old Town Square with a from-scratch-baked-pastry and a hand-crafted coffee at Little Bird Bakeshop or stop in at one of the many other spots on the plaza. The choices go on and on, so pick a table and have a seat.

Old Town, the City’s historic center, is bursting with public spaces to people (and dog) watch. In Old Town Square, discover a play area featuring a life-size bear, a fish to climb and a giant xylophone. In summer, outdoor concerts and street performers attract passersby. Nearby, on Oak Street Plaza, public art doubles as fountains and shade trees provide a spot to sip coffee or enjoy lunch.

After sundown A different energy buzzes here in the evening. Feel the vitality of bon vivants of all types out to see what the night might hold. Grab a bite and a beer and shoot some pool or whack a ping pong ball at CooperSmith’s Poolside. You could slip downstairs to Ace Gillett’s on College Avenue and sip a cocktail while you enjoy the 3-piece jazz band in the corner. Or just drop into the first place that grabs your attention. Want to stay outside? Grab some street-cart food and wander around…maybe stroll down one of the many safe and artsy alleyways.

Shopping paradise If you’re a shopper, you’ve arrived in a kind of paradise… boutiques, one-of-kind shops, foodie stuff, souvenirs and on and on. Want to sample 50 kinds of olive oil? Got it. Try on some boutique fashions? Check. Unique outdoor gear? Yep. Colorado mountain souvenirs? Endless. Lavender soaps and creams? Yummy. And most of these shops are locally owned, so you just might be chatting with the proprietor at any time.

Winter warmup

Fresh air

Winter brings Santa’s Workshop, a skating rink and a cozy fire pit to Old Town Square. The surrounding downtown transforms into a wonderland of twinkling lights and horse-drawn buggy rides under a warm blanket.

We love to linger outside on patios and rooftops. Relax a moment on the cozy roof-top bar at Mainline Ale House or the iconic fountain patio at Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant,

You can even ski or snowshoe into a yurt for a night or two. You have to try this: lift-served innertubing. Beaver Meadows Resort near Red Feather Lakes has 12 tubing runs along with traditional pond skating and groomed cross-country ski trails.

Horsetooth Reservoir is minutes west of town. Boat, rent a standup paddleboard, or swim. Around the reservoir, find crags for rock climbing and trails for walking, running and mountain biking. The reservoir lands offer access to the trails at Lory State Park, Horsetooth Mountain Open Space and Blue Sky trail to the south. Soapstone Prairie Natural Area and Red Mountain Open Space offer hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails plus views of bison and cultural pre-history. SOUND SCENE

Music: live and on stage

Local musicians pack the Aggie Theater

THE FLOURISHING MUSIC SCENE in Fort Collins is a huge part of what makes it unique. You have lots of choices from an evening of bluegrass jammin’ at a cozy venue to a packed square full of revelers. Pause and listen in Old Town Square as some passerby stops to tickle out a tune on one of the Pianos About Town. This might be your first sign that music fills the air here.

Concerts calling Stop by the square any Thursday or Friday summer evening for a free concert. Bring your dancing shoes! Wander over to Oak Street Plaza on a Tuesday, sit down and relax to some

For that I-can’t-believe-it setting, head up the Cache la Poudre Canyon to the outdoor stage at Mishawaka Amphitheater.

Festival fever And not to be missed: the festivals! Immerse yourself in the music and all the energy that

comes with it. Take in a weekend of free local and national acts on multiple stages at Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest or immerse yourself in the regional scene at FoCoMX. The Taste of Fort Collins festival offers an opportunity to pair local food with your live music.

Serious support Fort Collins supports music and the culture that goes with it, in a comprehensive way, on a campus called the Music District. Visitors can borrow state-of-the-art equipment while on campus or attend one of their many educational and entertaining events. www.themusicdistrict.org

CREATIVE SPACES

Embracing inspiration

A VIBRANT AND DYNAMIC arts community thrives in Fort Collins where the town and surrounding landscapes inspire artists living and working here. Not content to be a passive player, the city itself becomes a canvas through public art projects, which turn utility boxes into murals, alleys into installations and water into the music of children playing. Come see why the historic area of town has been officially certified as The Downtown Fort Collins Creative District by the State of Colorado.

Visual Art As you stroll around town, drop into some of the more than 15 private galleries, which display a wide variety of work. The Museum of Art | Fort Collins features a diverse showing of travelling exhibitions plus the work of local and regional artists. On campus at Colorado State University, stop into Gregory Allicar Museum of Art, and for something a little out of the ordinary, check out Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising to learn about people and their textiles, dress and interior furnishings. Or get into the act yourself at Painting with a Twist

36 | VisitFortCollins.com

where you can sip a glass of wine while you paint.

Performing arts Catch a performance at one of the Lincoln Center stages where national and local acts play the main stage and local troupes, such as Open Stage and Debut Theatre, perform in the more intimate theater. Or check out the schedule at Bas Bleu Theatre, a beloved venue that was reclaimed as a performance space from a historic machine shop. Want to make a night of it? Midtown Arts Center features musicals along with dinner. On the classical end, Fort Collins enjoys an opera company, a symphony and a ballet troupe.

First Friday Gallery Walk Every month, downtown fine art and craft galleries keep their doors open for this self-guided walking tour from 6-9pm. Explore the rotating monthly shows with friendly gallery owners, approachable art and a wide array of artistic experiences.

Art, where you find it As you move around town, keep an eye out. You are guaranteed to spot some art.

ArtWear fuses theatre and fashion at the Lincoln Center

Participating galleries are open until 9pm for the First Friday Gallery Walk

Fort Collins Mural Project—what happens when you put artists together with the idea that “Every wall deserves ART”? You get collaboration and beautiful murals. Art in Public Places—small accents and large installations all over town from pavers in the sidewalk to the 50-foot Ringfall sculpture on the corner of Prospect and Timberline. Pianos About Town—pianos painted by artists and set around town for people to admire and play. Transformer Cabinet Murals—all shapes and sizes of cabinets painted by local artists. Find a brochure at the downtown Visit Fort Collins center. Go to www.fcgov.com/artspublic to see recent Art in Public places, and current Transformer Cabinet and Piano artists and their projects.

THE DOWNTOWN ARTERY 252-254 Linden Street, www.downtownartery.com As a creative hub dedicated to building a community around art, The Downtown Artery features a café/bar, a performance venue, retail emporium and classrooms on its ground floor. Upstairs are art studios housing more than 40 artists, an art gallery with bar, lounges and rental rooms for touring musicians, artists and any traveler looking to stay in non-traditional lodgings with an artistic flair.

INSPIRATION AWAITS

Determination, daring and spirit drive innovation in Fort Collins

CASE STUDY:

Otter

OtterBox swims naturally FORT COLLINS HAS A PALPABLE PULSE. An energetic current that sparks curiosity, stimulates creativity and ignites innovation. Perhaps it comes from our roots as a western frontier town, one where people had to problemsolve and take risks to survive. Perhaps that’s what keeps us pursuing solutions to local challenges with results that have global impact. The Smithsonian Institute’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation showcases Fort Collins as a place that inspires invention. Forbes lists Fort Collins as one of the top 20 Best Places for Business and Careers. And the City of Fort Collins just earned a Malcom Baldridge National Quality Award for its visionary leadership, organizational alignment, systemic improvement and innovation. As the Cache la Poudre River runs through the center of town, so an entrepreneurial spirit courses through the people and businesses who call Fort Collins “home.”

OtterBox and its sibling brands, LifeProof and OtterCares, are synonymous with innovation, as is the company’s founder, Curt Richardson. An entrepreneur from childhood, Richardson’s Otter Products provide customers with premium protection for all their digital devices and a company that encourages its employees to be daring, explore who they are, work hard and have fun. With such an adventurous attitude that’s combined with determination, it’s no wonder OtterBox is headquartered in Fort Collins, a city known for adventure and determined to excel. And like the rock-solid foundation on which the city is built, OtterBox’s culture is built on the rock-solid values its founder grew up with: The Golden Rule, Passion, Innovation, Integrity and Giving Back. The OtterCares Foundation is the company’s philanthropic arm that gives back to communities, with a special focus on children. Through grants, events and

education, OtterCares strives to inspire the superstar inside every kid and unleash their full potential to change the world. “Our company mission is ‘We Grow to Give,’” says Matt Worley, manager of Otter Shop, the newly opened, one-and-only retail store located in downtown Fort Collins. “I think it describes both OtterBox and the Fort Collins community. Both are purposeful about serving others, giving and caring.” Otter Shop opened in summer of 2017 as a public extension of the company’s headquarters. “We want people to come here and hang out in the loft, plug in to recharge or have fun playing with our products. It’s a community space where people can experience our culture,” Worley says. From its playful mascot to its workspaces designed to inspire collaboration and creativity to quality products that allow people to protect what’s important while living large, OtterBox, like Fort Collins, models balance between work and play.

There’s an energy in Fort Collins that’s different, and it makes R.T. Custer and Tyler Wolfe tick. These co-founders of Vortic Watch Company say they’re amazed by all the entrepreneurs here who help each other, like their neighboring custom door manufacturer who uses his scrap wood to build keepsake boxes for each Vortic watch made. Custer and Wolfe have developed a high-tech process involving 3D titanium printing that turns restored, U.S.-made vintage pocket watches into luxury, one-of-a-kind wrist watches, which helps their owners experience what quality feels like. “To us, mechanical wrist watches are tiny engines,” says Custer. “They are feats of engineering and pieces of American history that we preserve.” Like the Fort Collins craft brews, which Custer and Wolfe enjoy in their free time, Vortic watches are small batch and artisanally made. Make an appointment to visit the headquarters. www.vorticwatches.com.

For Graham, Fort Collins is the first place she’s lived that really feels like home. Traylor says, “It’s a place where it’s easy to walk around and where people say ‘Hi’.” They want folks to experience the same things when they spend time at Ginger and Baker, a new community space they’ve established. Graham set out to open a pie shop, but the concept expanded into two restaurants, three bars, a coffee bar, a bakery, a teaching kitchen, a wine cellar, an artisan retail shop and more. She says it seemed fitting for the 1905 building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, to house a place where people gather and do life together. Where they can connect and discover the history of the city. Visiting Fort Collins and Ginger and Baker will be like a little slice of heaven—or pie, which is kind of the same thing. GINGER AND DEB’S CAN’T MISS LIST: A Magic Bus tour, a Museum of Discovery visit and an event at the new CSU football stadium.

Jarod and Rebecca Dunn are starting a revolution in Fort Collins—a revolution of the frozen kind, that is. Using ingredients from other local businesses like Morning Fresh Dairy, Nuance Chocolate, Harbinger Coffee and Happy Lucky’s Teahouse, they craft Revolution Artisan Pops. A hip new addition to the foodie scene, their fantastically flavorful ice pops will surprise and tantalize your taste buds. From succulent strawberry to cranked-up coffee and cream to unexpectedly delicious beet and ginger, the Dunn’s offer a fun, wholesome treat they think is just right for Fort Collins. “People are always out and about doing stuff, like biking or hiking. There’s beautiful scenery, it’s super clean and it just feels healthy here.” Each Revolution Artisan Pop is handmade at the couple’s Revolution Market on Mason Street in downtown where you can see it all happen and experience the best of Fort Collins flavors in a refreshingly frosty form. Food has always been one of Koel Thomae’s passions and a theme in her life, so it shouldn’t come as surprise that it’s now her livelihood. After discovering a yoghurt in her homeland of Australia that gave her a “stop-you-in-your-tracks taste moment,” she acquired the recipe, teamed up with Rob Graves and his familyrun, all-natural Morning Fresh Dairy. Although their velvety, creamy product pleases palates nationwide, they know their success is home grown. “Fort Collins is a great example of a community that embraces entrepreneurs,” Thomae says. “People here are easy going, laid back and loyal to ‘local.” That makes every day a g’day in the Fort for Thomae and her Noosa team.

BRING YOUR: BUCKET LIST

Shoot the churning rapids with six new, furiously paddling friends. Introduce your inner child to the fantastical Tour de Fat bicycle parade. Break fresh powder to share a crisp winter sunrise with a herd of big-horned sheep. Fort Collins is a great place to check off those bucket list items and you just might find that it moves you to add a couple more.

Like many people who call Fort Collins home, Nick Frey came here for a specific purpose (to race bikes) with no plan to stay; then he found out how awesome it is and couldn’t leave. With a hectic schedule that included a lot of travel, “I needed Fort Collins’ low-stress environment,” he says. “People here are down-to-earth, authentic and relaxed, and there’s space to breathe.” When he decided to quit racing, Frey geared up to start Boo Bicycles here because the city’s quality of life makes it the best place ever to have a small business. Customers who visit from all over the world to order their custom-made bamboo bikes experience that quality, too. He treats them to a stay at The Armstrong Hotel, dinner at Café Vino and, of course, rides on the city’s paved and dirt trails. Frey wants people to know that their one-of-kind bike comes from a one-of-a-kind place.

Her adventure includes a background in biochemistry, history, finance and food service; recycling an eclectic mix of vintage furniture and light fixtures to decorate Scrumpy’s tap room; and producing a variety of traditional- to zany-flavored hard ciders (like Strawberry Basil) from salvaged Colorado-grown fruit and then flowing them, plus other local ciders, beer, meads and wine, through 48 rotating taps for people to enjoy. Jennifer admits that, “Starting a cidery in a beer-centric town was kind of crazy, but there are enough adult beverage lovers here to help me be successful.” She wants visitors to think “Cider. Cider. Cider. Beer.”

TRANSPORTATION

Get around, get around

PHOTOS COURTESY CITY OF FORT COLLINS

FORT COLLINS SITS IN A SWEET SPOT in northern Colorado along the Front Range about an hour north of Denver and Denver International Airport. On your arrival, it’s easy to find your way around town. The major streets are set up on a grid. And here’s a tip: the foothills are to the west. You can figure it out from there. You can find parking on the street, in parking lots or parking garages. Check out the maps on pages 102 and 103.

Public transportation

Getting out of town

You have to ride the MAX, the north-south spine of the TransFort system. It’s cheap and easy, $1.25 a ride or $3 for a day pass and $10 for a week. During the day it stops every 10 minutes at the 14 stops from Downtown to the South Station just south of Harmony Road and a little less often in the evening. Twenty other bus routes connect with the Max and use the same pass. www.ridetransfort.com. And to keep it as clean and green as possible, Transfort vehicles run on bio-diesel and compressed natural gas.

Leave the driving to the pros. Hop on the FLEX bus. You’ll be in downtown Boulder in an hour and a half, and you can explore Loveland and Longmont along the way. Rates are the same as all TransFort buses and your pass works on the FLEX, too. For $10, you can ride the Bustang from the Downtown or Harmony Transit Centers in Fort Collins to downtown Denver. It takes around an hour and a half. www.ridebustang.com.

Bike and ride The buses and the Max are designed to take bikes. Just walk your bike onto the Max or load it in the front of the bus. Or hop off the Max, and hop on a bike! At many stops, and other locations around town, you can rent a bike with the Bike Share program. See Pedal Power, page 34, for Bike Share instructions and bike rental ideas.

To and from the airport Book your shuttle to and from the Denver International Airport starting at around $30 with Green Ride Colorado, www.greenrideco. com. Or for a private ride, try out Executive Comfort, www.nocoexecutivecomfort.com or Fort Collins Charter, www.fccharter.com.

Need a ride? You can summon a ride from Uber or Lyft. Or call Yellow Cab Taxi Service at 970-224-2222 or the app: zTrip.

YOUR EVENT DESTINATION

Make it happen here! PHOTO COURTESY OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS

FORT COLLINS SHINES as a meeting or event venue for conferences, staff retreats, weddings and more. It’s a place where business happens and memories are made.

Down to business Let’s start with the basics: ease of getting here, venues and a variety of places to stay. Access: Fort Collins is one hour from Denver International Airport. Catch a shuttle or rent a car and make the easy drive yourself. Facilities: Take your pick between intimate settings, small and large meeting rooms, banquet rooms, full-service hotels, stages with theater seating or idyllic mountain venues. The

94 | VisitFortCollins.com

perfect facility is here for your group. Lodging: We have it. Boutique hotels, full- and limited-service hotels, B & Bs, and hostels. Check out the Lodging listings on page 76 for specifics.

The extras What sets Fort Collins apart from other meeting destinations? The intangibles—those things that can help make the whole event a success, those experiences that people will talk about after the conference, or the amenities that are enticing to significant others who might be accompanying participants. Fort Collins is attractive all on its own.

It offers activities that help bring people together. Good food and entertainment are our specialties and it’s easy to get around! Time and time again we hear attendees and meeting planners alike talk about how friendly everyone is to attendees.

Planning support Staff members at Visit Fort Collins are here to help you have the most successful experience you can. You can start with a visit to the website: www.visitfortcollins.com. Check out the Meeting Planners page to start answering your questions and contact us for additional assistance when you are ready.

Where fun and team-building meet There’s the express purpose you’re getting together, the real content of the event— two people saying, “I do,” or technical papers being presented, maybe visioning discussions. But a lot of times you’re here for more than just that, right? You can do a lot of bonding or team-building just by hanging out together and having fun. Here are a few other suggestions if you want to take it up a notch.

Paddle together—When six or eight people are paddling a raft, if you don’t stroke together, you don’t get down the river. It’s a clear metaphor with very sudden consequences, and a lot of laughter. See the listings on page 88.

Escape together—Participants work as a team to find “The Missing Scientist” at Enigma Escape Rooms. This is a fascinating way to build working relationships, problem-solving skills and more. Or just have fun with the people in your party. www.enigmafortcollins.com Pedal and, well, drink together—And on the silly, but really fun side, up to 16 of you can hire a driver and bartender and literally pedal your way around town on a bicycle bar from My Handle Bar. You’ll stop in at local breweries, cideries and wineries along the way. No experience necessary! www.myhandlebar.com

The Lincoln Center is a popular venue for performances, weddings and large events.

Paint together—At Pinot’s Palette studio, find a variety of collaborative painting activities where you get together to paint something under the direction of an artist and the inspiration of a bartender. www.pinotspalette.com/fortcollins/corporate-events

Cook together—Cook up some project management and communications skills as your team prepares and eats some treats that you whip up under the guidance of a chef at The Cooking Studio. www.the-cooking-studio.com

OUR COMMUNITY

Snapshot of the essentials FORT COLLINS IS ON A ROLL. As you travel around town, you’ll see new building projects, street infrastructure updates, well-kept parks, planters filled with flowers, public art and so much more. And underneath it all is a solid infrastructure of great healthcare, strong schools, and excellent weather.

How’s the weather? Magnificent! Generally, it’s warm in the summer… 80s and 90s and sunny with afternoon showers that cool things off. Fall is magical with clear skies and cool (50s to 70s), though it can snow in September. Layers are a must. We have days in February that are 30 degrees with snow and the next day could be 65 with sunshine. Spring is unpredictable. Rain in the morning and clear skies in the afternoon. Who knows? April through June are the wettest months.

The sun Colorado boasts over 300 days of sunshine! Bring sunglasses, sun screen, caps and a big water bottle, or maybe two or three! Heat exhaustion and sunburn can happen quickly; so tune in and play it safe.

The elevation We’re right at 5,000 feet above sea level and the further you go west the higher you get. Take it slow the first few days. Plan your active days and your days in high country for after you’ve been here a couple days if you can. If you feel nauseous or have a bad

98 | VisitFortCollins.com

headache in the mountains, go to lower elevation. And stay hydrated!

Health care central It may be that you’re visiting Fort Collins for the cutting-edge, comprehensive health care that we are fortunate to have thriving here. The largest provider is UCHealth, which operates Poudre Valley Hospital, Medical Center of the Rockies and many associated clinics. Banner Health operates the Fort Collins Medical Center in the southeast corner of town and also several outpatient clinics. Kaiser Permanente is expanding in the area with a medical office in the south end of town and one coming soon to the north side.

ZEN AND THE ART OF VISITING

I will leave where I visit better than I found it. I, [state your name], do promise to have an incredible time while visiting Fort Collins and to get the most out of my visit whatever that might mean to me. While in Fort Collins, I will conduct myself in such a way as to not bring harm to myself, others or the environment. I will do my best to follow these guidelines: I will take only pictures and leave only footprints because it would be odd the other way around. I will avoid risking life and limb for more Likes. I will share the road or trail with bicycles, horses, wildlife and the occasional wandering Instagrammer. I will respect wildlife for my own safety and the health of the animals: no selfies, no chasing, no approaching. I will know what condition the conditions are in regarding: weather, roads and trails. I will do my best to respect the power of rivers and the hazards associated with any body of water. I will be safe.

I will not invent my own parking space nor will I lose my mind trying to find an existing one. I will have a plan B. I will slather on sunscreen everywhere whether I’m in snow, on a lake, a summit or just sipping beer on a patio. I will drink water like a camel in the desert. I will drink that water from a reusable container because I love the Earth. I will monitor my health and the health of my companions for evidence of altitude sickness, which might present as flulike symptoms. I will follow the leave-no-trace principles while in the great outdoors. I will plan and prepare. I will dispose of waste properly, meaning pack it out. I will be smart about any use of fire. I will leave what I find unless it is a lost puppy. I will be considerate of other visitors so we all have an extraordinary experience. I will leave where I visit better than I found it.

Thank you for your stewardship and commitment to sustainability, which is a Fort Collins hallmark. We appreciate it!
