BASE CAMP

Fort Collins WELCOME TO PARADISE! Overstating? Well…here in Fort Collins, mountains rise and rivers run…patrons down local brews in the sun. Food is fresh, the music’s sweet…folks smile and greet you on the street. A typical day might go like this... play outside in the sun. Take your choice, something edgy like a Class IV rafting run on the Cache la Poudre River or something mellower like sampling some local brews on a patio. Or poke around the boutique shops downtown and stop in for a bite at a unique eatery. Later check out a bike and pedal around this platinum-rated, bikefanatical city. Here in the winter? Can you say wonderland of lights? And the surrounding mountains glow with the snow. Or snuggle into a warm pub with a hot toddy and later slide into a venue featuring an artist from the hot local Colorado music scene. So come by car, come by plane, come by bus, or even come on your bike! We’d love to show you our town!

And, well, some other people have a few things to say about Fort Collins, too… 14 | VisitFortCollins.com

Friendly, fun and

PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SMILE and say hello…on the sidewalk, on a patio, at the cash register. You’re just going to have to get used to it. People are happy here and they want you to be happy, too! It’s a pace thing. With all the great eateries and shops and parks and plazas, it’s hard to rush. So don’t be in a hurry. Sit on a blue chair at a blue table in the newly renovated Old Town Square or Oak Street Plaza and just watch the people...adults strolling and kids climbing on the bear and fish sculptures and running through the water playgrounds. You’ll notice the little things: painted electrical boxes and pianos waiting for you to play, cobblestone alleys and strings of twinkling lights.

Sun is up If you’re a shopper, you’ve arrived in paradise…boutiques, one-of-kind shops, foodie stuff and on and on it goes. If you’re not-so-much a shopper, never fear. You have plenty of choices. Want to go for a walk? Head to the Poudre River Trail a few blocks north. Sit on a killer patio? The Rio on Mountain Avenue. Or Coopersmith’s on Old Town Square. Or a dozen other great places. How about bellying up for a beer in Fort Collins oldest bar? The tiny Town Pump awaits you on College Avenue. Stroll back in time with a tour of the historical buildings. The Old Town district is on the National Register of Historic Places and was named a Preserve America City by the White House and is also one of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Wow, right? Pick up a brochure at the Visit Fort Collins office at 19 Old Town Square.

Then there’s the nightlife…a different energy buzzes here in the evening. Let’s say you catch a performance at the Lincoln Center, but you’re not ready to go straight home. Well, you could slip downstairs to Ace Gillett’s on College Avenue and ask the master bartender to create a cocktail while you enjoy the 3-piece jazz band jamming in the corner. Or try one of the specialty drinks at Social, a speakeasy in the basement off Mountain Avenue. Feel the vitality of CSU students and young professionals out to see what the night might hold. Grab a bite and a beer and shoot some pool or whack a ping pong ball at Coopersmith’s Poolside. Or just drop into the first place that grabs your attention. Want to stay outside? Grab some street-cart food and wander around…maybe stroll down a lamp-lit alley to see where it takes you. DOWNTOWN TO-DOS

Just wandering around downtown is great. There is so much to discover. Here are some ideas: • Take a ride in a horse-drawn buggy • Walk the Poudre River Trail • Play a street piano • Splash in the water parks • Ride the trolley to City Park • Take the self-guided Foodie Walk.

Get OUT,

DOORS

...

that is

IT’S PLAY DAY. What are you going to do? You can have so many differents kinds of fun all around town.

Out and about… Fort Collins is an active town. People like to play…in the parks, on the trails…running, walking, riding a bike, throwing something. And the town is packed with parks and crisscrossed with nice paved trails. So try one out. u Walk or pedal a trail—try Cathy Fromme Prairie Natural Area, Spring Creek Trail or the Poudre River Trail. u Throw a disc—choose from two 18-hole courses: Edora or Aggie Greens Disc Golf Course. Or just find a park near you and launch a disc. u Splish, splash—jump into the big, wet playground that is City Park Outdoor Pool or get doused at Spring Canyon and Fossil Creek parks by dancing water spouts. u Picnic at a park—settle into a big open lawn, a grassy wetland, or next to the Cache la Poudre River. u Drive in to—watch a new release on the west edge of town against the foothills. u Visit a garden—stroll through hundreds of labeled pots at the CSU Flower Trial Gardens or wander around the Gardens on Spring Creek. u Golf—If swinging sticks is your thing, you’ve come to the right place! You can golf almost year ‘round, here. Or visit the indoor virtual golf center. www.fcgov.com/golf.

The shop hop Shoppers take your marks…you better get a good night’s sleep because you’re going to need it if you’re serious about this. u Hit the shopping centers—dive into

the newly renovated Foothills Mall or explore the retail of Front Range Village. u Poke around markets—uncover a treasure at a flea market or antique purveyor. u Follow the Resale Trail—tour secondhand stores. www.oldtownresaletrail.com. u Discover specialty shops—find that perfect little place…a wild bird shop, a fly shop, a knitting store, a bakery. They’re tucked in here and there for you to discover. u Jessup Farm Artisan Village—drop in for some eats and shopping at this converted farmstead.

Eat & drink You have to do it. You might as well love it. You can find some of your favorite national restaurants or try out the local fare. u Local food—French creperie, Ethiopian cuisine, Thai, or dining in the largest 80s themed pizzaria-musueum in the country. We’ve got it all. See page 68 for a list of

great places to dine. u Breweries—order a pint or taster flight from one of the many taprooms around town.

MUST LOVE DOGS

Yes, Fort Collins is a dog town. If you brought yours, here are a few things. First, the leash law is in effect and enforced. Second, you’ll see bags available for waste pick up—part of the City’s “Call of Doodie: Brown Ops” plan— use them, please. And finally, let Rover rove at one of the three dog parks in town: Fossil Creek (south end), Spring Canyon (midtown), and Soft Gold (north end).

A playground for all abilities One of the most popular playgrounds in town is at Spring Canyon Park on the west end of Horsetooth Road. Inspiration Playground is made to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and support braces encouraging kids of all abilities to play and interact.

further afield

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ IT’S GET-OUT-OF-TOWN DAY...what to do? West of Fort Collins is magical terrain. Take your pick: Meander up the Cache la Poudre Canyon or zip up to the high peaks.

Cache la Poudre River Canyon and Red Feather Lakes

It’s Wild and Scenic up here…really, it’s Colorado’s only river with that national designation. Turn west up Hwy 14 off Hwy 287 at Ted’s Place. Pick a trail, any trail—get out of the rolling tin can and stretch your legs, free your mind and breathe that pine air! u Mishawaka Inn—Best deck...ever. Grab a bite and a beverage at this idyllic eatery and concert venue, and help celebrate its 100-year anniversary u Cameron Pass area—Inhale, exhale. Go for a hike. Slide over to the west side and check out the Noghu Crags and the Moose Museum. For the next stops, head north up the steep switchbacks on County Road 69 by Rustic toward Red Feather Lakes. Take the quick way back to town down Red Feather Lakes Road toward Livermore. u Shambhala Mountain Center—Follow in the footsteps of the Dalai Lama, who visited here in 2006, to the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya. Visitors are welcome. u Red Feather Lakes area—In town, grab an ice cream cone and poke around the shops, then find some mountain fun in Roosevelt National Park. Take Deadman Road to the Deadman Fire lookout to see captivating mountain ranges in all directions.

Check your gas tank before you head up the Cache la Poudre Canyon. You can top off at Ted’s Place where Hwy 14 leaves Hwy 287. Options after that are few and far between.

 24 | VisitFortCollins.com

RocKy mountain national Park area The true Colorado Rocky Mountain high is just an hour up the hill. Follow the Big Thompson River on Hwy 34 out of Loveland. u Fall Creek Road and Trail Ridge Road—With panoramic 360-degreee views, TRR is the highest paved highway in the country. Pop on over to Grand Lake. Try this: Ascend via Falls Creed Road and come down Trail Ridge Road. u Rocky Mountain National Park—Discover elk, big horn sheep, spectacular peaks, quiet lakes, inviting trails, and more. Several entrances near Estes Park. u Stanley Hotel—Here’s Johnny! Stately “haunted” landmark where Steven King wrote The Shining. Take a ghost tour, admire the view from the front porch, or grab a bite to eat. u Peak-to-Peak highway—Stunning drive south along the Front Range. Grab a bite in Allenspark or in Ned (Nederland) on the south end. Swing into the Indian Peaks near Ward. Return “home” through Boulder. u The big scenic drive-around—Leave early. Drive time is six hours and you’re going to want to stop, stretch and look around…a lot! Drive up Hwy 34 west of Loveland into Rocky Mountain National Park then up and over Trail Ridge Road (open summer to early fall) to Granby. Head north on Hwy 125 to Walden and then turn east on Hwy 14 over Cameron Pass and down the Cache la Poudre Canyon. Can be done in reverse.

Cell phone service can be spotty to downright nonexistent in the canyons. Try loading a map of the area on your phone or tablet and then follow the blue dot. Or visit one of our visitor centers for a map and directions.

BEER

EVERY TOWN HAS A CERTAIN SOMETHING that makes it special. For Fort Collins, that’s craft beer and the culture that has grown around it. Fort Collins produces 70 percent of the craft beer made in Colorado, which is ranked 4th in the nation for the number of microbreweries per capita. It’s no wonder that people call Fort Collins “The Craft Beer Capitol of Colorado.” The beer scene has grown rapidly over the past decade with small, specialized breweries popping up

Each of the 20, and counting, breweries in Fort Collins offers its own ambiance and a unique experience for your palate. Whether you fancy yourself a seasoned connoisseur or are brand new to sampling craft beer, you’ll find something to suit your tastes. You can explore and experience the breweries in many ways—hop aboard the

why newcomers might feel lost when looking at a beer menu. Here are some clues that will help you decipher what a beer might taste like. [SPECIAL INGREDIENTS] Special ingredients range in intensity, but there is usually an expectation that the brewer will aim to strike a balance. FOOD: chocolate, coffee, cereal FRUIT: raspberry, peach, cherry, SPICES: cinnamon, ginger, cardamom

AMBER FLAVORS: toasty, bread crust STYLES: amber ale, amber lager

Situated a few blocks from each other, New Belgium and Odell Breweries are the largest craft breweries in town and both have recently expanded. New Belgium is revamping its tap room, adding an additional 1,600 square feet, and creating a beautiful beer garden, while Odell recently built an incredible patio area that is busy all year round. Both breweries offer tours daily: Odell every hour on the hour from 1-4 p.m. and New Belgium by early reservation. Just a short bike ride down Lincoln Avenue, Fort Collins Brewery and Tavern has grown rapidly in its 12 years and now has a full-service tavern along with a taproom. In 2015, FCB took home gold at the Great American Beer Festival for its Oktoberfest. Another hop, skip and jump away are Snowbank, Funkwerks and Horse and Dragon Breweries. Snowbank is one of the new kids on the block, opening in 2014, and describes itself as non-traditional and passionate for the Colorado lifestyle. Funkwerks has quietly become a power player in the craft beer scene with its nationally

ALES ferment at warmer temperatures and often present more yeast-derived flavors (fruity, sometimes spicy). You can safely anticipate that yeast flavors provide at least some of the flavor profile in an ale. [YEAST] Today’s brewers are using nontraditional yeasts, blending different types of yeast and using traditional yeast in untraditional ways. It’s not quite as cut and dry as ale and lager, but some generalities do exist.

award-winning saisons and sours. The other new kid on the block, Horse and Dragon, has become a true local favorite after being in town for just over a year. This family-run brewery is constantly playing with the balance of flavors in its beers. Back in Old Town, make a walking tour of Coopersmith’s, Equinox and Pateros Creek Breweries. Coopersmith’s Pub & Brewing opened in 1989 and is the longest operating brewery in Fort Collins. Grab some pub fare in the restaurant or a slice of pizza at the pool hall. Equinox makes tasty beers and has an amazing beer garden. And Pateros Creek is a father-and-son venture focused on leisure beers and a laid-back time.

A taste of midtown In the middle swath of Fort Collins, you’ll find several distinct breweries. Off College Avenue near the Mason Street corridor, Black Bottle Brewery prides itself in creating world-class unique ales and lagers and tries to go against the grain of traditional craft breweries. They also have an extensive food menu. To the east lie two of the new breweries in Fort Collins. Rally King is run by two home-brewers who turned their hobby into a business. It has a large tasting room as well as an inviting patio. The Jessup Farm Barrel House is housed in a 133-year-old restored barn in

the Jessup Farm Artisan Village. At The Barrel House they age beers in barrels used for wine or bourbon and other specialty barrels to create intricate flavors. To the west of the CSU Campus, find C.B. and Potts Big Horn Breweries and McClellan’s. Big Horn offers five standard beers and has won medals from the Great American Beer Festival. McClellan’s focuses on producing creamier, smoother European cask-style ales. These noncarbonated ales are similar to nitrogenfed beer like Guinness. And the first tapping of a new brewery for 2016 is Three Four Beer Co., a bicycle-friendly brewpub west of campus featuring beer from their own barrels and other craft beers.

THE South end Venture down College Avenue toward the south end of town and you’ll find 1933 and Zwei Breweries. Zwei is run by two brothers and offers small-batch creations to go along with its German-style beer. 1933 Brewing Company named itself

based on the year ending of prohibition. They aim to provide quality craft beer in a relaxing atmosphere.

Farm brew Soul Squared is a farm-based brewery in northern Fort Collins. They focus on high-quality, small-batch beer brewed with the freshest and highest-quality local ingredients possible, including hops grown on premises. They have no tasting room but their beers are served in local taverns and available for purchase.

Last but not least, Fort Collins is also home to Anheuser Busch, one of 12 Budweiser facilities across the nation. The Fort Collins location serves as one of the homes to a traveling hitch of Budweiser Clydesdales. If you’re lucky, you can catch the gentle giants at home. See listings starting on page 66 for contact information for the breweries. For more information and a map of breweries, check out www.visitfortcollins.com.

When visiting a brewery many people opt for a beer sampling flight. Often breweries will supply a description sheet for their brews, which allows thirsty visitors to plan their taste journey.

ABV: Alcohol By Volume is a standard percentage measurement of how much alcohol (ethanol) is contained in a volume of liquid (beer). DESCRIPTION: A love-letter from the brewer detailing the subtleties and delights that you can expect from the beer.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING REFRESHES mind, body and spirit like some time outdoors. For some, the focus of a whitewater run changes everything. For others, the serenity of a mountain meadow crazy with wildflowers puts it all in perspective. Some like camaraderie, others solitude. A trail runner’s high and an artist’s insight…find it here! Beginner, expert? It doesn’t matter. Need a guide or some instruction or need to rent some gear? Fort Collins area stores and outfitters rent and sell everything you could need.

Fly-fishing Can you tie a fly onsite to match the hatch and then present it oh-so gently? Fish, miles of streams, creeks and high-mountain lakes until you run out of tippet. Plenty of guides can help you learn to wet a fly. Check out the Blue Ribbon water on the Cache la Poudre River and the high lakes farther up.

Hiking and trail running

We got trails…rocky and technical to smooth and flowy. You can even find some sweet mellow roads in the forest for a family outing. It’s up to you. Hammer in the morning, cruise in the afternoon. Head west to Horsetooth Reservoir where you’ll find Lory State Park, Horsetooth Mountain Park, and the Blue Sky Trail. It’s one big playground! Of course, you can find endless terrain in the Cache la Poudre Canyon.

It’s magic all year round here. Do you like loops? summits? forests? meadows? Yes, yes, yes and yes! So for the quick, just want-to-get-out walk or run, pop up to the trails around Horsetooth Reservoir. Want to commit a little more time, get a little higher? Head up Cache la Poudre River Canyon. And for the big day…hit the high trails in Rocky Mountain National Park.

You could spend a lifetime, or three, exploring around

FORT COLLINS In the city: You don’t have to leave town to have a wild adventure. Tempt a trout in the Cache la Poudre River, pedal a paved trail along a creek, stroll a nature trail, or simply mellow on the shore of a pond or natural wetland.

HORSETOOTH RESERVOIR AREA: The closest wild playground lies minutes west of town including and surrounding Horsetooth Reservoir. Where to start? The reservoir itself: rent a pontoon boat and putt around, rent some kayaks on the north end or a standup paddleboard…or swim at one of the designated beaches. Around the reservoir, find sandstone crags for world-class bouldering and rock climbing; rolling and gonzo trails for walking, running, and mountain biking. Some places will cost you a little change to visit and some are free. Check out Lory State Park, Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, east side trails and crags, Horsetooth Reservoir and the Blue Sky trails to the south.

CACHE LA POUDRE RIVER AND CANYON: So much terrain and so much to do and so close to town in this National Forest region. The first picnic ground is 20 minutes from downtown Fort Collins. After that find mountain trails, a wild river and high peaks. Head out on your own or hire a company for a whitewater or fly-fishing adventure. For a challenge, hike the Grey Rock trail all the way to the top. 42 | VisitFortCollins.com

Camping & Picnicking

Rocky Mountain National Park

Wildlife, recreational trails, camping and scenic lookouts

Brats sizzling on the grill, the river bubbling 20 feet away, the kids tossing lures into that big hole behind a rock, and the sweet pine air…it just doesn’t get any better. Find a campsite or picnic spot as close as Horsetooth Reservoir or head out for a casual adventure up Cache la Poudre River Canyon or near Red Feather Lakes. Camping options range from primitive, hike-in, to maintained and RV-ready. Pick a public or private campground for just the right picnic location.

Rock climbing Stick your hand in a crack or crimp onto a side-pull hold as you ease up the sandstone on the east side of Horsetooth Reservoir. Check out the world-class bouldering at Rotary Park and Piano Boulders or grab a rope for some bolted-anchor, top-rope climbing at Duncan’s Ridge. Ready for bigger stuff? Head up to Lumpy Ridge or even the high peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Wildlife watching Have you ever seen a moose up close? How about a big horn sheep, elk or bald eagle? They’re out there. For big fauna, cruise up the Cache la Poudre Canyon. Explore Laramie River Road or pop over the other side of the pass and visit the State Park Moose Visitor Center complete with a moose sculpture made by the Gueswel family of Poudre Park. And never forget, these are wild animals—not pets, not zoo critters—so don’t approach them, don’t try to feed them and, absolutely, no selfies with them! Continued W

Whitewater SPORTS Mad dog, Pinball, Pineview Falls…just a few of the rapids you can run on Colorado’s only nationally designated Wild & Scenic river. So strap on a PFD (personal Cache la Poudre River flotation device…what they call a life Flowing from the mountains to the plains jacket on the river), buckle up your helmet and grab a paddle for a ride you won’t soon forget. Sign on with a company for a guided rafting trip, rent an inflatable ducky or bring your own boat. The access is easy for these action-packed runs from Class II family-friendly bumps to Class IV drops to Class V creekin’.

Many of our outdoor staples serve double duty as temperatures drop. Hiking trails become snow-shoeing routes and Sheldon Lake at City Park hosts ice fishing and ice skating. Or, zip up to snow country near Cameron Pass and around Red Feather Lakes for a spectacular backcountry adventure. Choose a rolling trail or venture up above treeline for some backcountry bowls. You can even ski or snowshoe into a yurt for a night or two. And you have to try this…lift-served inner-tubing. Beaver Meadows Resort has 11 tubing runs along with traditional pond skating and groomed cross-country ski trails. Whether designing a t-shirt or knitting one of her popular beanies in her in-store workshop, Suzanne’s adventurous, athletic spirit shines through. Having lived in a large urban area as well as a rural mountain community, she moved to town six years ago because, “there is a shoplocal push in Fort Collins that welcomes and supports new and small businesses and helps them to thrive. I have found my niche in the active bike community here and love the vibrant feel of Old Town, whether it’s checking out an art show, listening to someone play a piano in the square, having a beer at one of the many local breweries, or watching the photographers do photo shoots under the string lights in the alleys. There’s always a way to feel connected and inspired.”

Don’t miss a Sound NOW THAT YOU ARE HERE,

WELCOME TO FORT COLLINS AND NORTHERN COLORADO

Susan D. Baker BS, BC-HIS

For the past 17 years I have helped families and friends to hear the unique sound of life here in beautiful, northern Colorado. Fort Collins has a wide variety of sounds to hear, from the music of Old Town to the sounds of nature while hiking one of our many trails. Imagine not being able to hear the birds singing, the roar of the Poudre River, or the voices and of loved ones. You would be missing out on life.

Call today to hear all that Fort Collins has to offer.

If you love animals, exploring the outdoors and eating good food, then you’ll love hanging out

with Alanna Day and Bob West, the owners of The Inn at Whiskey Belle Ranch. After spending their career years in the worlds of telecom and architecture respectively, Alanna and Bob now spend their time entertaining guests and teaching them about the daily routine of a working cattle ranch complete with Scottish Highland cattle, cutting horses, herding dogs, chickens and barn cats. Bob’s the mastermind of the 1894 farmhouse’s remodel. In the evening, the couple shares a dinner they prepare with their garden vegetables and grass-fed beef as the sun sets behind the foothills. They say the Inn “is a place where we learn about our guests’ interesting stories and backgrounds, and renew our faith in the people from all over the country.” It’s a pure Colorado-style remedy for reconnecting with your wild side.

Bring Your

Bucket List Break fresh powder to share a crisp winter sunrise with a herd of big-horned sheep. Stand in the shadow of a stupa blessed by the Dalai Lama, himself. Introduce your child to the magic of The Nutcracker Ballet or inspire them with a museum full of wonders! Shoot the churning rapids with the love of your life, a river guide, and six new, furiously-paddling friends. Fort Collins is a great place to check off those bucket list items and you might find that it moves you to add just a couple more.

There’s a different attitude here. People are kind and friendly and excited!” As the director of marketing and development for Downtown Artery, William helps other artists develop marketing survival skills. “We’re working on fostering an artistic community in a thriving town and creating a collaborative ecosystem in one building.” His work at The Artery reflects that of others across the city where “everyone wants to keep improving the core structure that makes it great. Markiewicz, it gets you part ownership in Front Range Ride Guides and the title of Senior Guide plus Operations Manager. He says he’s fortunate to be able to share his passion and what he loves with others, especially in northern Colorado. “We are surrounded by such a beautiful landscape that boasts countless outdoor recreational opportunities. You can head out and do just about anything. It just so happens, for me, that means a ton of great mountain biking. Besides that, the Fort is so bike-friendly. You can pedal anywhere! I’ve always felt there is nothing that rivals the feeling of cruising a trail on two-wheels. It’s pure freedom.”

OUR COMMUNITY

Snapshot of the essentials THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS ESTIMATES that 161,000 people live here now. You’ll see new building projects, street infrastructure updates, well-kept parks and flower pots, public art and on and on. And you know, downtown is cool….Disney cool. The buildings inspired Disneyland’s Main Street USA.

How’s the weather? Magnificent! Generally, it’s warm in the summer…80s and 90s and sunny with afternoon showers that cool things off. Fall is magical with clear skies and cool (50s to 70s), though it can snow in September. Layers are a must. We have days in February that are 30 with snow and the next day could be 65 with sunshine. Spring is unpredictable. Rain in the morning and clear skies in the afternoon. Who knows? April through June are the wettest months.

The sun Colorado boasts over 300 days of sunshine! Bring sunglasses, sun screen, caps and a big water bottle, or maybe two or three! Heat stroke and exhaustion can happen quickly; so tune in and play it safe.

The elevation We’re right at 5,000 feet above sea level and the further you go west the higher you get. Take it slow the first few days. Plan your active days and your days in high country for after you’ve been here a couple days if you can. If you feel nauseous or have a bad headache in the mountains, go to lower elevation. And stay hydrated!

Health care central It may be that you’re visiting Fort Collins for the cutting-edge, comprehensive health care that we are fortunate to have thriving here. The largest provider is UCHealth, which operates Poudre Valley Hospital, Medical Center of the Rockies and many

90 | VisitFortCollins.com

associated clinics. Banner Health just opened the Fort Collins Medical Center in the southeast corner of town and also operates several outpatient clinics. Kaiser Permante is expanding in the area and recently opened a medical office here.

Senior care and housing Seniors find a continuum of care here from independent living to assisted-living to skilled-nursing facilities. Columbine Health Systems is a locally owned network that provides care through the full spectrum of housing options along with rehabilitative care.

Education A great town needs a great school district and Poudre School District nails it with a combination of high-performing neighborhood schools and a menu of choice programs including bilingual immersion, International Baccalaureate, Expeditionary Learning, STEM and more. Many students opt to continue their education at Front Range Community College Larimer Campus offering nationally accredited classes. Students may earn Associates of Arts or Associates of Science degrees. Colorado State University is consistently ranked as a top tier university in U.S. News and World Reports rankings of “America’s Best Colleges and Universities. It is also one of the core economic and cultural drivers in Fort Collins. Read more about what it offers starting on page 49.

YOUR Event Destination

x Lincoln Center

A hub for meetings and events.

Meetings and events are just better here

SO YOU’RE PLANNING A MEETING or an event…maybe a wedding, a conference, or a staff retreat. It’s an opportunity to get some work done and spend some good times together. How do you decide where to host it?

Down to BUSINESS Access: Fort Collins is one hour from Denver International Airport. Catch a shuttle or rent a car and make the easy drive yourself. Facilities: Take your pick between intimate settings, small and large meeting

92 | VisitFortCollins.com

rooms, banquet rooms, full-service hotels, stages with theater seating or idyllic mountain venues. The perfect facility is here for your group. Lodging: We have it. Boutique hotels, full- and limited-service hotels, B & Bs, and hostels. Check out the Lodging listings on page 76 for specifics.

The extras What sets Fort Collins apart from other meeting destinations? The intangibles— those things that can help make the

whole event a success, those experiences that people will talk about after the conference, or the amenities that are attractive to significant others who might be accompanying participants. Fort Collins is attractive all on its own. It offers activities that help bring people together, good food and entertainment are our specialties and it’s easy to get around!

Oh, the bonding… There’s the express purpose you’re getting together, the real content of the event—two people saying, “I do,” or technical papers being presented, maybe visioning discussions. But a lot of times you’re here for more than just that, right? You can do a lot of bonding or team-building just by hanging out together and having fun. Here are a few other suggestions if you want to take it up a notch.

u Paddle together—When six or eight people are paddling a raft, if you don’t stroke together, you don’t get down the river. It’s a clear metaphor with very sudden consequences, and a lot of laughter. See the listings under Outfitters on page 86.

u Escape together—Participants work as a team to “Escape from the Machine” at the Fort Collins Escape Room. This is a fascinating way to build working relationships, problem-solving skills and more. Or just have fun with the people in your party. www.fortcollinsescaperoom.com.

u Pedal and, well, drink together—And on the silly, but really fun side…up to 16 of you can hire a driver and bartender and literally pedal your way around town on a bicycle bar from My Handle Bar. You’ll stop in at local breweries, cideries and wineries along the way. No experience necessary! www.myhandlebar.com.

u Paint together—At Pinot’s Palette studio, they have a variety of collaborative painting activities where you get together to paint something under the direction of an artist and the inspiration of a bartender. www/pinotspalette.com/fortcollins/corporate-events.

u Cook together—Cook up some project-management and communications skills as your team prepares and eats some treats that you whip up under the guidance of a chef at The Cooking Studio. www.the-cooking-studio.com.

Time and time again we hear attendees and meeting planners alike talk about how friendly everyone is to visitors.

Planning support Staff members at Visit Fort Collins are here to help you have the best, most-successful experience you possibly can. You can start with a visit to the website: www.visitfortcollins.com. A visit to the Meeting Planners page should answer all your questions. Contact them to get your event going.

Transportation

x

lay of the

the MAX

A transportation system which moves many

LAND IT’S DIFFICULT TO GET REALLY LOST in Fort Collins. Here’s a clue: the foothills are to the west...always. You can figure it out from there. And the major streets are set up on a grid. College Avenue, Hwy 287, is the main north-south artery, and then every mile to the east and west is another main street. On the east-west vector, same thing, every mile, a main street. Traffic flows pretty well most of the time and you can find parking on the street, in parking lots or parking garages. Check out the maps on the next page.

Public transportation You have to ride the MAX, the northsouth spine of the TransFort system here. It’s cheap and easy, $1.25 a ride or $3 for a day pass and $10 for a week. During the day it stops every 10 minutes at the 14 stops from Downtown to the South Station just south of Harmony and a little less often in the evening. And 20 other bus routes connect with the Max and use the same pass. Let’s say you’re staying at a hotel on Harmony Road and you want to explore Fort Collins. You could drive to the south Max terminal and park there or you could check the app or website (www.ridetrans fort.com) to see where the nearest bus stop is and when the next bus will arrive. The bus will run you right down to that Max station. And one more thing that we think is pretty important: to keep it as clean and

94 | VisitFortCollins.com

green as possible, Transfort vehicles run on bio-diesel and compressed natural gas.

Bike and ride And it just gets better. The buses and the Max are designed for you to take your bike with you. So you can go multimodal. Or hop off the Max, and hop on a bike! At many stops, and other locations around town, you can rent a bike with the automated, self-service Bike Share program. Just download the app and you’re good to go. www.fcgov.com/ transportationplanning/bikeshare.php.

Getting out of town Leave the driving to the pros. Hop on the FLEX bus. You’ll be in downtown Boulder in a little over an hour, and you can ex-

plore Loveland and Longmont along the way. Rates are the same as all TransFort buses and your pass works on the FLEX, too. Rolling to downtown Denver for the day? Saddle up on the Bustang. For $10, you can ride from the Downtown or Harmony Transit Centers in Fort Collins to downtown Denver. It takes around an hour and a half. www.ridebustang.com.

To and from the airport Two companies shuttle to and from the Denver International Airport starting at around $30: Green Ride Colorado, www.green rideco.com, and SuperShuttle, www.supershuttle.com/dia. For nonstop service by Supershuttle, go to: http://blog. supershuttle.com/direct-service-comingfort-collins/
