In the fall of 2022, Elaine Gunsch approached Sr Peter Mary, manager of the Borden Care Home with an idea for a new activity for the residents She called it “Museum in a Suitcase” Elaine loves history and has been a curator and a volunteer in museums since the 1990s She planned on bringing a suitcase of articles from the Borden Museum to the care home once a month The idea was a great success Each month, Elaine brings a suitcase with a theme In November it was Remembrance Day and December was Christmas, naturally For January she chose the theme of The General Store The chosen articles are displayed out on a table that is visible to everyone Picking up each piece and showing it to all present, Elaine shares a story that often sparks happy memories and sharing from all present Nearly all the residents of the Care Home come to the dining room

numbers were four digits long that included many of the small towns between Saskatoon and North Battleford One of the residents look through it and found her old number from when she was a child! Another rare piece was a store catalogue from 1949 These are hard to come by since any catalogue usually ended up in a “special room ” outside as all the residents remembered

Everyone looks forward to the monthly visits of Elaine and her suitcase of memories

The Kindness of Strangers

Valentine's Day - the special day dedicated to the celebration of love

And happily, there are many different kinds of love to celebrate

We love our spouses, we love our kids, we love our pets

We even love chocolate (that's a love that always burns bright - often called "true love")

There is also the kind of love that the ancient philosophers called "agape"the love for another person in general, the kind of love that results in random acts of kindness

And when that kind of Valentine's card - a random act of kindness - is directed at my own family membersthen that is a Valentine's card that I receive, too

He was a Jack Russell terrier and true to his breed, he had more energy than brains (Though he was, admittedly, fairly adept at outsmarting me ) But the lack of brains didn't prevent him from having an opinion on everything, an opinion that he always wanted to share, and share with everybody and at all times (Unfortunately, not an uncommon personality trait even among non-dogs )

One beautiful spring morning, I was preparing to leave for work and the back door was open, letting in the fresh warm air And all of a sudden, here comes Coda - yap, yap, yapping as he ran through the house and out the back door, going full tilt boogie I thought he was headed out to share his opinion with one of the local squirrels, also known for their astute intellects and willingness to expound their opinions to all and sundry But instead of the clamour of both of them speaking at the same time, as was usually the case, there was silence And usually, silence when dealing with pets and kids is an 'uh-oh' moment

But not this time

I looked out and there was Coda sitting very quietly and attentively at the end of the sidewalk and there was the garbage collector guy leaning over the fence feeding him a biscuit For Coda, eating was the one (and only) activity that took precedence over opinion shouting

That was the garbage collector guy being kind to my dog

My son, when he was just starting high school, would take the city transit bus home after school He had

a monthly bus pass to use, but of course, being a teen-ager, he lost it one day at school When he got on the bus that afternoon, he told the driver that he had lost his pass and the bus driver said, "That's okay - I know you have one " When I got home from work, Jacob told me about his lost bus pass There was no time to get him another before the next day, so in the morning I made sure he had the fare to pay for his ride home That night when I got home from work, Jacob gave me back the money and said he hadn't needed it He had started to put the coins in the fare collection box but the driver had put his hand over the fare box, stopped him and said, "Don't worry about it I know you have a pass "

That was the bus driver guy being kind to my son

I was visiting my daughter in Calgary and we stopped off at the grocery store to pick up a few groceries for supper My daughter was pushing the cart and we were talking and collecting various items Going thru the checkout, she paid and, still using the shopping cart, we made our way out to her car and unloaded the groceries, afterwards pushing the cart back into the cart corral We had just left the parking lot when Cass realized she didn't have her purse A quick turn around the block and back to the store We checked the cart we had used - no purse We went inside the store, back to the check-out we had used - no purse Same result at the customer service desk - no purse

In these kinds of situations, I have a tendency to problem-solve by hopping up and down and swearing a blue streak

My daughter, however, favours a more mature and rational approach So back to the car we go, and head home to start the process of cancelling credit cards, etc etc We walked up the front sidewalk and before unlocking and opening the front door, Cass checked for mail in the box mounted beside the door And there was her purse - with all her money and ID and credit cards And no notesomebody had just picked it up, must have checked her license for her address and then dropped it off That was some anonymous person, a stranger, being kind to my daughter Random acts of kindness are inherently beautiful just like any other act of love (- even if they are not directed at my dog, my son and my daughter) And unlike Valentine's cards, they have the added benefit that they can be given at any time of year - no need to wait for February 14

Access Communications offers $20,000 in Scholarships to Grade 12 Saskatchewan Students

Throughout 2022, Outrage Dominated Social Media. Did All This Outrage Change Anything?

There’s always outrage when what's deemed a significant event occurs Inevitably we jump on our social media accounts to display our anger, our "outrage," which results in the ultimate lazy and hypocritical act of protest, virtue signalling

Social media has made it extremely easy to be theatrically outraged to get likes and clicks between sipping your Starbucks Caramel Brûlé Latte

On both sides of the political spectrum, people of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds are outraged about something today We live in a period of human history where every demographic feels they're somehow being violated and victimized The outrage ranges from billionaires who believe their tax burden is oppressive to the Gen Zs who hijack digital stages hurling insults at strangers whose views differ from theirs

The level of outrage is rising across all sectors of society, as you've probably noticed You're either outraged when you see someone without a mask or outraged when someone is wearing a mask (Why can't we shrug our shoulders and say to ourselves, "Each to their own"?) People who complained about Stephen Harper's tax hikes now equate any tax increase to communism and fascism

Outrage is addictive Social media is the perfect medium for expressing outrage, usually from an anonymous account, while comfortably sitting at home What's easier and more crowd-pleasing:

A Tweeting your outrage at John Tory's failure to address Toronto's homelessness, or

B Putting your frivolous spending, which we all indulge in, on hold and donating to a local shelter instead?

As I write this, Will Smith's career is still going strong The RussiaUkraine War continues Rogers Communications and Bell are still in business (I guess the #boycottRogers and #boycottBell didn't resonate with subscribers ) Iranians are still protesting Mahsa Amini's death on September 16th while in police custody, and the Iranian government continues to arrest and execute people

ago expressed mild concern about civil unrest or a virus inevitably morph into making apocalyptic predictions Experts who gave balanced advice are replaced with doomsayers Social media influencers and mainstream media pundits adopt absurd positions to get people upset and talk about them (e g , Jordan Peterson)

Every day, all day, we vent our outrage on social media Additionally, we tag those who inflamed us, letting them know our feelings That'll show them!

Meaningful action has been replaced by "blips of theatrical outrage" on social media platforms The lack of meaningful action is responsible for the sluggish pace at which social injustices are addressed We're aware of all our social ills, and if social media talk is any indication, they outrage us, but we rarely act on it

For example, our earth is undeniably changing due to climate change Almost everyone I know is outraged that governments aren't doing more to combat climate change. Yet, how many people, including yourself, have radically altered their 1st world lifestyle to reduce their ecological footprint?

The shortage of Christmas trees outraged those who claim to be concerned about climate change Is there anything more environmentally wasteful than cutting down a healthy tree that produces oxygen, transporting it (using fossil fuels), then decorating it and trashing it after a few weeks?

Many people reading this will say, "I rarely use social media Why should I care about all this outrage taking place on social media?" (Remember when people tried to portray themselves as being "superior" with their time saying, "I rarely watch television?") Don't kid yourself; you all of us are downstream from social media's effects on television, radio, and traditional journalism Increasingly what passes for journalism is reporting on the outrage exchanges on Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, et al

Let's cross our fingers that the pandemic will officially end sometime in 2023, easing much of the angst being expressed on social media Meanwhile, instead of being upset over everything and filling social media with reactionary posts, identify the issues that bother you the most and research them thoroughly Then decide what you can do to contribute to the solution, and this is key take action! The simple act of expressing outrage on social media has no tangible, meaningful value, but contributing to the solution does
