Down the Road

Donna and Deanna are sisters, twins, a little past retirement age, still active and hard-working - warm, pleasant, gentle-hearted women. They each have their own house on a shared farm and maintain a small herd of cattle.

Both sisters have a few physical ailments which slow them down a tad but don't cool their ardor for caring for their farm and their livestock. Nor do they diminish the glint and sparkle of humour and liveliness in their eyes.

Donna and Deanna are self-professed proud members of a prominent and prestigious Scottish clan, and are descended directly from Robert the Bruce, a long-ago King of Scotland (him and Mel Gibson are the guys who lead the battle against the English in the movie "Braveheart").

The glint of humour in the sisters' eyes sparkles a little brighter as they admit that perhaps they are only indirectly descended from Robert the Bruce, or even, maybe, but improbably, not descended from him at all.

Donna and Deanna have been proud farmers all their lives and like to talk about their farm. One of the farm things they particularly like to talk about is a recent addition to their herd of cows - Arabella - acquired this past spring.

Arabella, in keeping with Donna and Deanna's Scottish heritage, is named after the granddaughter of an even older king of Scotland, William the Lion.

(As a perhaps interesting and possibly even true aside, the fellow who married Arabella, (the royal granddaughter, of course, not the cow), was not a member of royalty but was a very rich cattle baron. He was elevated to knighthood status, a knight of the king’s court, on his marriage to Arabella, and thus became, according to the king-mandated naming convention of the time, Sir Lion. The spelling of his name got messed up, however, and he went into the history books not as 'Sir Lion' but as 'Sir Loin', which over time came to be the name used to describe the product, rather than the producer.)

Arabella (the cow, of course, not the granddaughter - let’s try to keep up) just this spring produced a bull calf which the sisters named 'Charles' in keeping with his distinguished lineage (not Charlie, or Chuck, and certainly not Chaz, if you please, but Charles). And not to be noted, not out loud anyway, and especially not to be noted out loud in front of the sisters, is that given the centuries-old enmity between the Scots and the English, it seems curious that Charles, the bull, with his eminent and

regal Scottish heritage, would appear to share the same name as Charles, the current King of England.

Charles was, at birth, a healthy bull calf in all respects but he was perhaps just a shade too healthy - he wasn’t able to get enough milk from Arabella to satisfy his lusty appetite. Deanna and Donna dealt with this issue by bottle-feeding him. Well, they tried to bottle feed him but Charles, unfortunately, couldn't figure out a way to get the milk out of the bottle - what was so easy to withdraw from his mother's teats was a confounding difficulty when sucking on a bottle. Donna and Deanna addressed this difficulty by putting a half-teaspoon of baking soda on Charles' tongue. Charles didn't like the taste of the baking soda and started moving his tongue around, trying to get rid of the taste, and thus learned to suckle.

However, another difficulty emerged, this one a difficulty neither of the sisters foresaw, nor were prepared for - the not insubstantial emotional attachment that develops when bottle feeding a cute young animal - a cute young animal with big brown eyes, so innocent and trusting, cuddly-soft skin and big soft nose.

Charles will have to be bottle-fed for perhaps up to as long as six months after which time whatever limited nourishment he gets from Arabella will be complemented by the additional nutrition he receives from grazing.

Meanwhile, though, over that long a period of time of bottle-feeding, the emotional attachment Donna and Deanna have for Charles will be that much stronger, more developed. And when that attachment is broken, as it ultimately will be, it will also be that much more distressing for the soft-hearted sisters.

And Charles, too, will not be unaffected by the special care and attention he's getting - the progeny of a namesake of royalty, a namesake of royalty himself and being treated like royalty with a hand-fed breakfast. Charles will still be going off to the feed lot in the fall, but neither Deanna nor Donna, brave-hearted descendants though they are, will be able to bear watching him get loaded into the cattle trailer and hauled away.

Charles won't be happy either - indeed, he is sure to be mightily miffedpampered and entitled, he will have been expecting to stay on the farm for heifer and heifer.

Oh, well. Poor Chuck.

Although no one likes a know-it-all, they dominate the Internet.

The Internet began as a vast repository of information. It quickly became a breeding ground for self-proclaimed experts seeking what most people desire: recognition and money.

Today, anyone with an Internet connection and some typing skills can position themselves, regardless of their education or experience, as a subject matter expert (SME). From relationship advice, career coaching, and health and nutrition tips to citizen journalists practicing pseudo-journalism, the Internet is awash with individuals—Internet talking heads—sharing their "insights," which are, in large part, essentially educated guesses without the education or experience.

The Internet has become a 24/7/365 sitcom where armchair experts think they're the star.

Not long ago, years, sometimes decades, of dedicated work and acquiring education in one's field was once required to be recognized as an expert. The knowledge and opinions of doctors, scientists, historians, et al. were respected due to their education and experience. Today, a social media account and a knack for hyperbole are all it takes to present oneself as an "expert" to achieve Internet fame that can be monetized.

On the Internet, nearly every piece of content is selfserving in some way.

The line between actual expertise and self-professed knowledge has become blurry as an out-of-focus selfie. Inadvertently, social media platforms have created an informal degree program where likes and shares are equivalent to degrees. After reading selective articles, they've found via and watching some TikTok videos, a person can post a video claiming they're an herbal medicine expert. Their new "knowledge," which their followers will absorb, claims that Panda dung tea— one of the most expensive teas in the world and isn't what its name implies—cures everything from hypertension to existential crisis. Meanwhile, registered dietitians are shaking their heads, wondering how to compete against all the misinformation their clients are exposed to.

More disturbing are individuals obsessed with evangelizing their beliefs or conspiracy theories. These people write in-depth blog posts, such as Elvis Is Alive and the Moon Landings Were Staged, with links to obscure YouTube videos, websites, social media accounts, and blogs. Regardless of your beliefs, someone or a group on the Internet shares them, thus confirming your beliefs.

Misinformation is the Internet's currency used to get likes, shares, and engagement; thus, it often spreads like a cosmic joke. Consider the prevalence of clickbait headlines:

• You Won't Believe What Taylor Swift Says About Climate Change!

• This Bedtime Drink Melts Belly Fat While You Sleep! • In One Week, I Turned $10 Into $1 Million!

Titles that make outrageous claims are how the content creator gets reads and views, which generates revenue via affiliate marketing, product placement, and pay-per-click (PPC) ads. Clickbait headlines are how you end up watching a TikTok video by a purported nutrition expert adamantly asserting you can lose belly fat while you sleep by drinking, for 14 consecutive days, a concoction of raw eggs, cinnamon, and apple cider vinegar 15 minutes before going to bed.

Our constant search for answers that'll explain our convoluted world and our desire for shortcuts to success is how Internet talking heads achieve influencer status. Because we tend to seek low-hanging fruits, we listen to those with little experience or knowledge of the topics they discuss yet are astute enough to know what most people want to hear.

There's a trend, more disturbing than spreading misinformation, that needs to be called out: individuals who've never achieved significant wealth or traded stocks giving how-to-make-easy-money advice, the appeal of which is undeniable. Several people I know have lost substantial money by following the "advice" of Internet talking heads. Anyone on social media claiming to have a foolproof money-making strategy is lying. They wouldn't be peddling their money-making strategy if they could make easy money.

Successful people tend to be secretive.

Social media companies design their respective algorithms to serve their advertisers—their source of revenue—interest; hence, content from Internet talking heads appears most prominent in your feeds. When a video of a self-professed expert goes viral, likely because it pressed an emotional but-

ton, the more people see it, the more engagement it receives, such as likes, shares and comments, creating a cycle akin to a tornado.

Imagine scrolling through your TikTok feed and stumbling upon a "scientist" who claims they can predict the weather using only aluminum foil, copper wire, sea salt and baking soda. You chuckle, but you notice his video got over 7,000 likes, has been shared over 600 times and received over 400 comments. You think to yourself, "Maybe this guy is onto something." What started as a quest to achieve Internet fame evolved into an Internet-wide belief that weather forecasting can be as easy as DIY crafts.

Since anyone can call themselves "an expert," you must cultivate critical thinking skills to distinguish genuine expertise from self-professed experts' self-promoting nonsense. While the absurdity of the Internet can be entertaining, misinformation has serious consequences. The next time you read a headline that sounds too good to be true, it's probably an Internet talking head making an educated guess; without the education seeking Internet fame, they can monetize.

TOWN OF ASQUITH

Work has started on a back up generator at the water treatment plant. This will allow water delivery to continue during power outages. In December, a pilot project will begin at the water treatment plant to test biological filtration. If successful, conversion will begin in Spring 2025. Biological filtration will allow for a significant decrease in the amount of chlorine added to the water. It will also improve the taste, remove iron, and substantially decrease the amount of water used for backwashing.

E-Tech is in town installing fibre optic cable for SaskTel. This will allow access to InfiNET, SaskTel’s fastest internet service.

Did you know that Asquith residents are eligible for a Wheatland Regional Library card? You can borrow books from the province-wide public library system and borrow eBooks and audiobooks though the Libby app. There are many other resources available to card holders at libraries and on their website, www.wheatland.sk.ca.

Kelly Block MP Report October 11, 2024

Carbon Tax Is Impoverishing Canadians

After nine years, Justin Trudeau is not worth the cost.

On Thursday, the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) once again confirmed that the NDP-Liberal carbon tax is impoverishing Canadians.

In a new PBO report released yesterday, they confirmed that Canadians will suffer a “net cost,” paying more in the carbon tax than they will ever get back in rebates.

This proves what Common Sense Conservatives have been saying all along – the carbon tax is nothing more than an expensive scam.

On top of this, the PBO confirmed that the NDP-Liberal tax will cost the average person $652 in Newfoundland and Labrador, $575 in PEI, $580 in Nova Scotia, $457 in New Brunswick, $903 in Ontario, $693 in Manitoba, $894 in Saskatchewan, and $697 in Alberta. Despite what Justin Trudeau says, it is indisputable that the carbon tax makes most Canadians poorer.

But the NDP-Liberal Government doesn’t care. Instead of giving Canadians the relief they deserve, Trudeau decided to hike his carbon tax by 23 percent last spring, as part of his plan to quadruple the carbon tax by 2030. And all the while Trudeau was punishing Canadians with this tax, he pretended that it was somehow making Canadians richer.

But the NDP-Liberal Government can no longer lie to Canadians. As the PBO wrote, “the average household in each of the backstop provinces will see a net cost, paying more in the federal fuel charge and related Goods and Services Tax, as well as receiving lower incomes (due to the fuel charge), compared to the Canada Carbon Rebate they receive.

This corroborates the NDP-Liberal Government’s own data, which they tried to hide from Canadians, showing that the carbon tax will cost the Canadian economy $30.5 billion per year by 2030.

It’s time for a carbon tax election where Canadians can choose a Government that will axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget, and stop the crime.

Remembrance Day

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

May 21, 1926 - October 12, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of Doris Eileen Pattison announces her peaceful passing in October 2024. Doris was born in Melfort, SK, to James and Edith Grant. She attended Spry School for her early education before continuing to high school in Melfort. Doris furthered her studies at Saskatoon Normal School and took university classes at the University of Saskatchewan.

Doris was a dedicated teacher, educating grades 1 through 7 in Elbow and Donavon from 1946 to 1950. In the mid-1960s, she taught kindergarten from home, nurturing young minds with care. On July 28, 1951, she married the love of her life, Rob Pattison, and they made their home in the Donavon area where they raised 6 children. Doris and Rob were active members of the Anglican Church in Delisle, where their faith guided them throughout their lives.

Doris was deeply involved in her community, serving as a member and president of the Delisle Senior Centre. She was recognized for her selfless contributions with a volunteer award from the town. Over the years, she sat on numerous boards and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Doris was also committed to her family, making 17 trips with her sons Jeff and John to New Orleans for specialized schooling at Walter's Remedial School. She traveled to Jerusalem, England, and many other destinations, enriching her life with meaningful experiences.

In October 2019, Doris moved to Reston Golden Estates in Manitoba to be closer to her daughter Nancy. Doris quickly embraced Reston and enjoyed the parks, churches and community events.

Doris is lovingly remembered by her children: son Gord (Dianne) Pattison and their children Kevin (Cassandra) and children Mason, Maddox, Ainsley, Lenny, and Aubrey, Anita (Jason) Pattison and son Cody, Michael (Robin) Pattison and their children Brynlie, Bronwyn, and Brooklyn. Son Ken (Shelly Serhyenko) Pattison and their children Connor (Dakota) and Evan. Son Bill (Leora Morris) Pattison and children Maegan (Marren) Phinney and children Harlow and Haylen, Krysten Pattison, as well as Nancy's children Kurt (Marianne) Schiltroth and daughter Keara, Kent (Kari) Schiltroth and children Nora and Evie, Kyle (Amy) Schiltroth and daughter Renee. She is also survived by her sister, Myrna Derkatz, many beloved cousins plus many extended families. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Rob, and infant son Jim, sons Jeff, and John, son-in-law Grant, daughter Nancy, and infant grandson Scott.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Doris's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

AGRICULTURE REPORTS Soil Stardom On The Rise

Once the focus of only scientists and farmers, the general public has now become increasingly engaged in soil science as consumers wish to know more about food production. Policy-makers have responded. Federal senator Rob Black led a national study of soil health in Canada, the first of its kind in four decades, with re-

sults with results delivered in June of this year.

A top Canadian scientist in this field, David Burton (pictured above) appreciates soil’s newfound stardom. “I’ve had long periods in [my soil science career] where I spoke to rooms with four people listening to me. Now, when I get a full room for talks, I really enjoy it. It’s a special time.” Burton is the director of the Centre for Sustainable Soil Management in Truro, Nova Scotia, which is part of the Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture.

Established in 2021, the Centre has expanded its Maritime focus to take on projects with a Canadawide scope, including its work to create a national soil data hub. Using big data, its researchers study soil function and management related to forestry and urban areas, but much of its focus is agricultural. Burton’s own work centres on nitrogen management in agricultural soils. This includes greenhouse gas emissions reduction, nitrogen fertility and making new tools available to farmers to improve their own nitrogen management.

For decades, soil management decisions have been made based on chemical composition. The field of soil health has refreshingly expanded to include aspects such as organic matter and compaction, said Burton. “Soil health embraces the physical, chemical and biological, which is a much more meaningful representation of the state of soil.”

With Olds College instructor and PhD student Luke Laurence, Burton developed a method to measure soil nitrogen mineralization. They first applied it to produce a map for the agricultural soils of Prince Edward Island. The system uses machine learning software to analyze this data and predict soil charac-

teristics for a given field. A farmer can use this to determine a rough estimate of the nitrogen mineralization potential of their soil—the amount available in a form the crop can absorb. “A farmer can quantify the nitrogen capacity of their soils and look at how their management is either improving or decreasing that nitrogen supply capacity,” said Burton.

“It’s got great potential,” said Laurence. “It would give producers more confidence factoring in nitrogen mineralization.”

Funded in part by the Weston Family Foundation, they are at work on similar maps for Quebec and Ontario. “We hope to produce a map for every province,” said Burton.

Also a nationwide initiative, working in co-operation with the Canadian Society of Soil Science, the Centre intends to build a Canadian soil hub within five years. This would take the form of a single online platform that would present high-quality soil data from each province free of charge. The Centre is working with the University of Saskatchewan to integrate its soil data into the hub and believes additional universities will participate.

It is difficult to obtain permission to use soil databases collected by entities such as provincial soil labs. Also problematic, certain historical soil data is stored in outdated formats such as floppy disks, and corporations may be reluctant to share proprietary data. “We’re working to negotiate access to such data in a way that protects the privacy of farmers but also allows us to capitalize on the wealth of information it represents,” said Burton. “It’s to provide better resources to make better decisions about how we manage and sustain our soil.”
