Down the Road
Playa del Carmen
The Yucatan peninsula separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico. The Caribbean side of the peninsula is renowned for its white sand beaches and warm ocean waters and of course, its tropical climate. Interestingly, the sand on the beaches doesn't get hot the way sand typically does. Even in the hottest part of the day, the sand is comfortable to walk on, doesn't burn your feetyou don't have to do that little 'ouch - ouch - ouch' dance on your way into the water.
Playa del Carmen is a beach resort on the northern end of the peninsula, about an hours drive south of the International Airport in Cancun. Mrs. B and I were staying at a downtown condo only half a block from Playa's very popular and much-frequented open-air pedestrian mall. The mall is about as wide as a four-lane road and stretches along for more than two miles running about 3 blocks off the beach and parallel to it. Both sides of the mall are packed, cheek by jowl, with many, many restaurants and bars and souvenir stores and specialty boutiques as well as every other kind of retail outlet you can think of.
All the restaurants and bars have music, mostly live bands, and are well-stocked with beverage-happy tourists.
And from sunrise to the early morning hours, the mall is also packed with vacationers and locals and buskers and shills and more tourists, nobody in a hurry, everybody wandering casually, enjoying the music and the aromas, the sights and sounds, the energy.
The condo we had rented came with the inducement that the front door of the condo was only 69 (sixty-nine) steps away from the Starbucks on the pedestrian mall. Well, who could resist that?
An uncited inducement but soon discovered, was the presence of an upscale gym just a few doors down from the Starbucks. While sitting in the warm sun of the Starbucks sidewalk patio, leisurely sipping on a cold beverage, I was entertained by a steady passage of people coming and going to the gym: spandex-clad women, lithe and comely, looking as if they were in the middle of a Sports Illustrated photo shoot. There was also a steady passage of men coming and going, too, all buff-bodied, chisel-featured Brad Pitt look-alikes (honestly, it was like looking in a mirror).
The wide variety of restaurants within easy walking distance made eating out an easy choice - walking home took less time than washing supper dishes. After one particularly fine and leisurely supper we slowly strolled our way back to the condo, enjoying the warm night air, the smell and feel of it, and the sounds of music, slightly muted on our otherwise quiet street.
Mrs. B was entering the code for the entrance gate to the condo complex when she felt something strike her hair, and then something else strike her shoulder. She gasped and then I, too, felt something land on my shoulder and on my back. We both looked up, thinking something had fallen on us from the roof, looked like bird poop, maybe - smelled like bird poop, definitely.

There was a group of four people, 2 men and 2 women, coming toward us from behind, they were only a few steps away, and they rushed forward with napkins and tissues in their hands and started brushing at us, helping to clean the poop off. Then just as quickly they were gone and we hurried into our condo, wanting to shower and wash our clothes. After showering, Mrs. B went looking for her wallet which she had been carrying in her purse - and couldn't find it. She enlisted my help and we scoured the apartment but to no avail.
Those people were pick-pockets, she said, they stole my wallet. No way, I replied, Mexicans don't do that. But then I put my hands in my own pockets and found my credit card wasn't there - I knew it had to be there, I had just used it for dinner that night. And belatedly, I realized that Mrs. B was right, we had been pickpocketed.
Mrs. B and I have vacationed in Mexico many times over the years and this was the first negative experience we had ever had. Our experience with Mexicans was that they were always welcoming and kind and patient. That maybe helps to explain my initial hesitation to admit we had been robbed.
But then once I accepted that we had indeed been robbed, and my surprise and annoyance had subsided, my feelings moved on and I started to appreciate the theft for the amazing experience that it was.
All men, right from birth, have a well-developed hyper awareness when it comes to the care and protection of the, um, centre of our being. We are very sensitive to any incursions, any possible incursions, into the "No Trespassing - Authorized Personnel Only" zone.
Yet here was some guy with his hand in my pants pocket, my front pants pocketlights should have been flashing, alarms should have been blaring - and I didn't even notice.
How, then, could I not admire the kind of skill that had been required - so amazingly adept these guys were, so adroit. It was like a magic trick performed seamlessly, convincingly.
There was a caveat to my admiration, though, a grimace towards my own behaviour.
While they were brushing us off, I was thanking them for their help, thanking them for their kindness. As they walked away, I was standing by the condo entrance waving at them, saying good night. Gracias, amigos, I called and waved. One of the men turned around and waved back and even in the evening darkness, I could see him smiling, see the white flash of his teeth, as he called back. At the time, I thought he was saying 'Your welcome, senor’.
I wonder, though, if he was maybe saying something else.

SaskTel reaches Halfway Mark of its 5G Cellular Network Rollout
On June 7, 2024 SaskTel announced that it recently reached another major milestone on the deployment of its advanced 5G wireless network. Since first launching its 5G network in parts of Regina in late 2021, SaskTel has successfully upgraded half of its provincial wireless network to 5G technology. As of today, SaskTel’s 5G network consists of more than 520 cell sites and covers nearly 85% of Saskatchewan residents.
“Our government is thrilled with the progress SaskTel has made in bringing the amazing speed and power of its 5G network to the people of Saskatchewan,” said Dustin Duncan, Minister Responsible for SaskTel. “For individuals and families, the rollout of SaskTel’s 5G network means enhanced connectivity and greater access to important services and opportunities. For businesses, 5G is a gateway to innovation, enabling more efficient operations, increased productivity, and new opportunities for growth.”

Carbon Tax Coverup
Justin Trudeau and his Environment Minister, Steven Guilbeault, have been caught in a lie.
For years, they told Canadians that the carbon tax was somehow making them richer, while hiding a secret internal report that proved that their carbon tax will cost Canadians $30.5 billion each year.
That works out to $1,824 per family in extra annual costs. As a direct consequence of Trudeau’s carbon tax, life has become unaffordable.
Families will have to pay $700 more for groceries this year, while millions of Canadians are lining up outside of food banks. In Toronto, one in ten people are having to rely on food banks to survive.
This NDP-Liberal Government has been lying to Canadians and forcing them to suffer while hiding the truth their carbon tax will cost families nearly $2,000 per year, and that they get back less than they pay in.
Despite knowing the harm they are causing, the Liberals hiked the carbon tax on April 1st and have persistently refused to pause it whenever Conservatives try to give Canadians some temporary relief, like a summer break from their punitive tax so families can have a road trip.

The extent of this coverup only came to light when the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) told Canadians that Trudeau had placed a gag order on his office.
The Liberals even attacked the PBO for telling the truth.
Now, because of the pressure from Common Sense Conservatives, this Liberal Government was finally forced to reveal the true damage their tax is causing the Canadian economy.
Justin Trudeau and Steven Guilbeault lied to Canadians and his Liberal Government cannot be trusted to be honest. Trudeau needs to fire his Environment Minister, axe the tax and start governing this country with common sense, for the good of the common people.
Under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre, my Conservative colleagues and I will continue to push the Liberals to meet these demands until after the next election, when Conservatives get into government and start working for Canadians.

TOWN OF ASQUITH
Asquith Town Council held its regular council meeting on June 12, 2024. Attending was Mayor Gail Erhart, and Councillors Jackie Stobbe, Darcy Stack, Pete Heck, Cecilia Mryglod, and Wade Monks-Janzen. Councillor Jodi Nehring attended by calling in on her personal cell phone. Also attending was C.A.O. Kathy Picketts and Office Assistant Kaila Montgomerie.
The meeting was called to order by Mayor Erhart at 6:55 p.m. A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the May 8, 2024, regular council meeting.
Council made a motion to accept the May 2024 financials and May 2024 bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.
Accounts Paid in the amount of $33,964.16 and Accounts Payable of $79,835.40 was accepted as presented.
The 2023 Audited Financials were presented to Council.
Attendance was down this year (likely due to weather) for the Asquith Fire Department Annual Pig Roast/Show and Shine and Dance on June 8, 2024.
Details regarding the festivities for Canada Day will be announced on posters, on Facebook and on the Town website. The 600 block of Main Street will be closed to traffic in front of the Asquith Hotel on Canada Day from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
A reminder goes out to all individuals that the Town of Asquith has a Burning Bylaw which dictates that one can have a fire in town for recreational use only. Only clean wood/firewood can be burned in your fire pits - no painted/treated wood, refuse, leaves, etc. should be burned. Be kind to your neighbor and to the environment and burn only clean wood materials. Also, no bonfires are allowed - please keep the size of your backyard fires moderate.
TOWN OF DELISLE
Town Council held a regular meeting on June 11, 2024. The town allowed for the temporary closure of 1st street west on Saturday July 13th in order to accommodate the annual Show and Shine.
The arena booth kitchen will be leased to Lowell Epp again, for the 2024-2025 season, at a monthly rental rate of $1000 plus GST.
A new fireworks bylaw was passed, which strictly prohibits any use of fireworks within the town of Delisle. This new bylaw will be posted on the town website for everyone to see.
All signing authorities for the Administrator/CAO position will be transferred from Mark Dubkowski to Damon Werrell. Damon Werrell will officially be taking over from Mark Dudkowski as the Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Delisle on July 3rd.
VILLAGE OF VANSCOY
Council will be holding a Committee Meeting to finalize the budget next week. The Mill Rate will be set and the tax notice will be sent out by mid-July.
Please remember when placing bags of leaves in the alley to leave them untied.
Council will be teaming up with the Grade 7 class from the Vanscoy School on a project they have been working on. They are placing metal waste bins in a few locations around the west side of the Village. If you are out and see garbage lying around, please use these bins to place the garbage in. Thanks to the Grade 7 class for taking on this initiative.
Councilor Nadine Seguin has tendered her resignation from Council. Regrettably, Council had to accept the resignation. We wish Nadine every success as she relocates to the city. Nadine has been on Village Council since 2016 and will be missed. This is a general election year so Council will not hold a bi-election to fill the vacancy.

This July marks the 10th annual Back 40 Show & Shine in Delisle. The Back 40 Show & Shine started as part of the Delisle Days and Rodeo in 2014. The show was located at the AGT arena parking lot, and soon after, out grew that location. In 2017 the show moved to 2nd Street East in front of the schools. When the Delisle Days Committee decided to join the Vanscoy Ag Society to create Fall Fest with a later September date, the Back 40 Show & Shine decided to go out on it's own to keep the July date to due to it's popularity among the local car community. With the continued growth of the show, in 2021 the Show & Shine moved to 1st Street West in front of the business allowing the local stores to add to the experience of the Show & Shine.

The largest attendance was in 2023 with 172 vehicles registered that day. What sets this show apart from most, is that Back 40 Embroidery designs a new logo every year and imprints the logo on t-shirts, hoodies, blankets, cups and hats. These items are given away, as door prizes, to each person who registers a vehicle. As mentioned the logo is unique to each show, used on the poster and on the door prizes. The very first show did not have it's car on the poster, so it was decided to have the 2014 logo to come back for the 2024 show. This car has special significance to the owners of Back 40 Embroidery, a 1956 Ford Fairlane that was owned and restored by one of the owners of Back 40 Embroidery's father. This years show is set for Saturday, July 13th, 2024.

Access Communications Receives Universal Broadband Funding for Two Important Projects
Regina, SK – Access Communications Co-operative (Access) is pleased to announce it has received funding from the Government of Canada’s - Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Universal Broadband Fund for two important projects to bring broadband internet to underserved areas of the province.
“Every Saskatchewan resident deserves the chance to achieve their full potential and that means having access to reliable high-speed Internet service is key,” said Carmela Haines, President and CEO of Access. “We’re pleased to be able to work with the Federal Government to improve connectivity for two underserved areas in our province.”
Over the next two years, Access will be installing 22 new wireless internet towers in south-central Saskatchewan. It will cover over 4,600 square kilometres, starting north of Willow Bunch and extending to the US border. When operational, the towers will deliver a minimum of 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. In addition, resi-
dents in the Turtle Lake area (northwest of North Battleford) including Kivimaa-Moonlight Bay, Horseshoe Bay, and Indian Point-Golden Sands will be receiving a mix of fixed and wireless broadband internet greatly improving connectivity.
In total, 2,086 households will benefit from being able to connect with Access’s fast and reliable internet product. Access Communications was awarded $4.6 M by ISED to complete these projects. To learn more about the Universal Broadband Fund, visit www.ic.gc.ca.
Access currently delivers urban like internet services to 113 Saskatchewan communities, exceeding the federal government’s recommended minimum of 50 Mbps download speeds.
