A Christmas to Remember
y 2018 was full of many highs and lows, making it seem like one of the most challenging years of my life. Some of what it included is....
Spending time helping a friend through cancer treatment... Managing to go fishing numerous times... Unfortunately losing a friend to suicide... Golfing only once... Watching my son graduate from high school...
My wife and I also spent the last half of the year learning to adjust to being empty nesters. Our only child all but disappeared after graduation, as he struck out to make his own way in the world. The year ended with my turn to host Christmas. I had managed to skirt this for quite a few years lately, so I was happy to embrace this responsibility again. It was just a small gathering of my mother, my sister and her husband and their daughter in law and grand daughter, my lovely wife and hopefully our young son. I spent weeks meal planning, making schedules and cleaning the house. My wife was a huge help, but it was a still lot of work. We were both very pleased to have our son resurface on Christmas Eve to lend a hand as well. The big day included both lunch and supper. I had successfully planned all the meals, bought the groceries and pre-cooked all of the hot dishes... I couldn’t fail ! Up early Christmas morning, we set out three tables of snacks to graze on during the day and prepped the fresh lunch platters, which I stored in the upstairs fridge. It was almost noon and our guest were about to arrive, so I headed for a quick shower, knowing they had everything they needed to start without me.

I re-emerged to a house full of people pacing around the snack tables, chanting “we’re starving, what’s for lunch”... Wow, what do you people want from me !! I sprung into action, shoved some hors d’oeuvres into the oven while they continued to graze. I finally got the hot foods onto the table, which they shoveled down before we sat down for a couple of hours of traditional gift opening during the afternoon. After the disasterous start with a late lunch, I was determined to get the supper out on time. I brought up the pre-cooked turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, turnip from the extra fridge in the basement and shoved it into the oven. While bringing it up to serving temperature I started to make room on the tables by moving the snacks into the upstairs fridge. I opened the fridge door only to find a giant meat & cheese platter, pickle tray, buns, breads and condiments that I had apparently forgotten to put out for the lunch. Ooops... that explains a lot. The next day, with turkey dinner leftovers and a fresh lunch for 20, I put the word out to friends and neighbors for a Boxing Day party, and they all came through. I put all the food back out on the tables (yes, including the damn lunch). Guests started arriving at noon and the last two stayed up till 8am the next day ! It was a crazy two days to cap off an equally crazy year... but I was able to spend time with my family, my friends, and best of all... play pool till dawn with my son. I hope your Christmas was just as fulfilling and memorable. Wishing you all the best of luck in the coming New Year. Ken Sowter - Editor

Saskatoon Farm Toy and Collectable Show
he Saskatoon Farm Toy & Collectable Show will be celebrating its 31st year on January 11-13th, 2019. It’s first year was in the Saskatoon Travelodge banquet hall where the show organizers, Wayne and Sherry Gamble of Perdue, realized they needed a larger venue. The Western Development Museum became the home for the show for the next 23 years. In 2014, a new venue was needed and the move to the German Cultural Center was made. In 2015, Neil and Allison Isley of Delisle joined forces with Wayne and Sherry to promote the show. This year will be Neil & Allison's first year of organizing the whole show. The show has had many different exhibitors over the years, both for displays and sales. From homemade creations like a gravel/ rock crusher and many custom farm
toys, to brand new toys in boxes. It has been a source for parts for restorations and customizations on many pieces of equipment. Although the main features are the farm toys themselves, there are many other things that will help draw a crowd. There are vintage toys and collectibles, Hot Wheels, diecast models of different sizes and construction equipment. There have even been some dolls, china, and handmade wooden toys available over the years. The most popular displays at the show are the farm yard creations that have been built from scratch. These feature scale sized buildings, equipment, people, animals, and even fields. The amount of hours and work that go into the displays are tremendous. Show exhibitors have a couple opportunities to show their creations in the Scratch Built and Custom Built competitions. The winners of the
categories win a plaque and bragging rights for their hard work. For many years, there has been a pedal tractor donated by local farm dealerships to be raffled off. The proceeds of the raffle have gone to many great charities. This year, the tractor has been graciously donated by Cervus Equipment in Saskatoon with proceeds going to the Canadian Caner Society. The Saskatoon Farm Toy and Collectible Show will be held at the German Cultural Center, 160 Cartwright Street E., in Saskatoon on January 11-13. The hours are Friday 5pm-9pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 10am-4pm. Admission for adults is $5.00, Children 6-12 are $2.00 and children 5 and under are free. If you see individuals driving dangerously, speeding, or if you see something that just doesn’t look right, please call the RCMP. Goodbye to Centre Block and Summer Jobs Update
T
his week marked the temporary closure of Centre Block, the heart of our democracy for the past 150 years. I found myself paying particular attention to my surroundings as I recognized we were in our final days of serving in this place. The House will move to West Block for the next 10 years or more while Centre Block undergoes restoration to ensure that it remains a place where Parliamentarians are able to face the challenges of a growing Nation.

It has heard the echoes of gunfire, as many people in this chamber still, no doubt, recall. It has rung with cheers of victory at the end of two world wars, and has stood mute witness to the tears of a nation.
No doubt there will be passion, but I am more confident than ever in the strength, not of this building but of this institution, in the decency and dedication of parliamentarians who will be tasked with guiding us through whatever turbulence may come.
Behind these walls, our predecessors and our ancestors charted a course for a nation. To all those among us who had the honour of being sent here by our constituents, this is more than a building.
Our Conservative Leader, Andrew Scheer, gave a wonderful speech in the House to commemorate its closure. I will let his beautiful words speak for themselves:
It is more than just four walls, six floors and a tower. It is the heart of our freedoms, the link between Canada's past and present, and between our fundamental values and the hard work of legislating and governing.
“Mr. Speaker, for 150 years, the Centre Block of our Parliament has housed Canada's democracy.
After this week, and for the next 10 years, our House will have a new home.
More than just a building, it is the embodiment of all of Canada's strengths and weaknesses. It has been

I count myself blessed to be among the few Canadians who get to come and work here every day, who have been elected to sit in this chamber, to represent our citizens and to participate in the moments that define our nation. I know this is a sentiment shared by all my hon. colleagues as we gather to say goodbye to Centre Block for the next 10 years. Because of the strength of our institution, the resilience of Canadians themselves and the dedication that parliamentarians bring to their work here, I know that in 10 years we will have faced down whatever threats may come, overcome our challenges and charted a course to a better and brighter future for all Canadians.”

CREDIT SCORING AND INSURANCE
A
majority of insurance companies including SGI CANADA and Wawanesa Mutual now utilize your personal credit score as one of the factors to calculate insurance rates. This means in order to obtain the most competitive rates you need to authorize or provide consent to insurance scoring by your provider. In particular, you may need to confirm your full legal name (remember your insurance policy is a legal contract and therefore must indicate your full legal name including middle initials as necessary!), your date of birth and a Canada Post approved mailing address. It is ultimately your choice to provide access to your credit based insurance score. Credit scores are only used to offer a discount on your policy. The discount could be substantial so it is important that you make a decision in order to obtain the best possible rate. Note your rates will never increase due to an unfavourable credit score or refusal to provide access to your credit
score. A person’s credit score has proven to be a strong indicator of the risk that a claim will be filed against that policy. Credit-based insurance scoring is now a common underwriting tool used throughout the industry. Credit-based insurance scores are not used in the same way as traditional credit scores. While traditional credit scores are used to predict the likelihood that a consumer will default on a loan, credit-based insurance scores are used specifically for insurance purposes to predict the likelihood that an individual will file an insurance claim. Insurance scoring is just one of several factors that are used to calculate home insurance premiums. Other rating factors include the age and size of your home, materials used to build your home such as wood frame, estimated cost of reconstruction, location of your home, your individual claims history, the crime rate in your neighbourhood, value of your personal belongings,
proximity to a fire station and fire hydrant, whether your home is in a neighbourhood prone to sewer back up or water damage, the coverage and deductible that you choose and any applicable discounts such as monitored security systems. Mooney Agencies is a locally owned independent insurance broker, working for you rather than an insurance company or financial institution. Thanks to Donna and Dan Seymour for donating potatoes from their garden, it will be much appreciated by the families! The Asquith Baptist Church donated a space for sorting and distributing the hampers. A special thank you goes to the elves Jeff and Dierdre Zacharias, Mel and Helena Peters, Donna Seymour, Doreen Partridge, Kathy Picketts, Hermann Erhart, Lloyd Cross, and Darren Kraft for sorting and delivering the Christmas hampers. Their hard work ensured that those in our community who needed the hampers received them. We hope that the spirit of “Operation Santa” will be a continuing success in 2019. Asquith and the surrounding area is a wonderful community and we thank you for your help and support in helping Christmas be a little bit brighter for many in our community! he SCC would like to thank all those who supported and helped out with the Mom’s Pantry fundraiser. It was a huge success and our commission from all the sales amounted to just over $2000. This money will be going towards outdoor learning activities for the students at school, some of which has already been spent on the Outdoor Learning shed and storage bins. The cookbooks arrived and we were excited to see all the wonderful recipes together. There are numerous yummy recipes that were submitted for this book and will forever be a keepsake for anyone associated to our school and our community. At the time of publishing this newsletter we have approximately 65

books left for sale. The success of this SCC sponsored initiative has been tremendously received and supported by school families and the many community members. We expect to sell the remaining copies at the Christmas concert but if you want to ensure you have a cookbook ahead of that date, just contact the school (306-668-4808) and we can set one (or more) aside for you. Send payment of $10.00/book to the school. Our next SCC meeting will be on Wednesday, January 9th, 2019 @ 5:00 p.m. We will be begin planning the June Try-A-Thon with the SCC from Delisle Elementary School. Anyone is welcome and we would love to have you come too. May this Christmas season bring joy to your hearts!
