Pike Lake Provincial Park Festival of Lights

P

ike Lake Provincial Park’s second annual Festival of Lights was held over seven evenings in the beautiful Pike Lake Provincial Park campground. This spectacular winter festival included 29 sponsored drive-through light displays, food service from JT’s Tasty Treats, skating on the canal, Crokicurl, and more! By the last night of the Festival over 8,700 people drove through the park to view the displays and take part in physically-distant winter activities. This event would not have been possible without the dedication and creativity of local sponsors: Pike Lake School, Pike Lake Fire Hall, Kevin Dunn, The Huddle, Meewasin Valley Authority, the Environmental Studies Students’ Association (ESSA), Delisle-Vanscoy United Church, Bev & Harry, Blackstrap & Fort Carlton Provincial Parks, Val Blain & Friends, Creations by J, Outter Limits Clothing,

Letter to the Editor

Freedom of Speech

I

would like to thank the writer of our most recent Letter to the Editor (printed at the right) for taking the time to put his thoughts in writing and sending them in for publication. The writer is referencing an editorial I wrote last November. His opinion and interpretation of the meaning of my comments about Trump, American politics, and the danger of mis-information and spreading conspiracy theories, are his own and are welcomed. We are pleased to be able to publish them. Now you may have read the same November editorial and quite possibly interpreted my comments differently than him, and if so, please feel free to send us your interpretations and opinions and we will be pleased to publish them as well.

always will. We deserve to hear from these local representatives as much as we do from local residents, like the writer of this months letter to the editor. I encourage you to read his letter and maybe go back and read my November editorial that is referenced. I look forward to soon hearing from you on this or any other topic you may wish to bring to the attention of our community.

The writer of this “Read between the lines” letter also referenced the “risk” that he thought I was taking when he “read between the lines”, commenting that journalists in Canada may jeopardize the federal government handouts if they say the wrong thing about the current government. REnovation I would like to clarify this point. The RM Review receives no funding or financial support from the federal government in any way. That said, we do get some advertising revenue from Federal, Provincial and Municipal politicians and

H

aving time over the holidays to catch up on reading November and December issues of the RM Review, left this reader with a new appreciation for editor Ken Sowter's ability to convey his messages through creative writing. November's editorial was an incredible display of Ken's talented journalism skillset. His mock TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) was cleverly crafted to point out the difference between a true leader of a country and what we have here in Canada. It is hard for a journalist to point out the accomplishments of a leader and the lack there of a so called leader without risking his government media bailout payments. Which would leave readers wondering if anything good had been accomplished such as peace deals in the middle east, bringing US troops home, not starting a new war, having one of the greatest impacts ever on the US economy by bringing jobs back and lowering the unemployment rates, pulling out of the Paris Accord and revealing it to be a waste of taxpayers dollars and a wealth scam by the elite, turning NATO around and making other countries pay their fair share, reducing taxes for the US working class, making the USA energy independent and a net exporter and lowering the reliance on foreign countries, and fast tracking the development of the covid vaccine. These have all happened in the last 4 years, all while dealing with a hostile democratic party insistent on campaign misinformation with cooperation from the left leaning media. Exactly how Ken's first and last paragraphs point out. Very clever Ken! Now compare these accomplishments or lack of to those of our liberal government that is hellbent on leading Canada into bankruptcy. By accomplishments I dont mean mr. Trudeau's dress-up charades, or the SNC LAVALIN scandal, or the WE CHARITY scandal, or the other ethics violations, or the billions of dollars he has wasted on foreign aid and the ‘please like me’ money he has gave to other foreign charities, or the sole source contracts given to friends of the liberal government. I mean real accomplishments. And I dont mean giving yourselves raises and increasing taxes during this so called pandemic. Is there anyone out there that can list one thing that our leadership has done that is good for the whole country of Canada? As your last paragraph said "Surely this is not how we are expected to behave in a democracy. Don't base your reality on propaganda from ranting, power hungry lunatics. They are exactly who past generations fought and died for, to eliminate." You have described the Liberal/NDP coalition and the USA Democratic party to a tee. Good job Ken! I look forward to the next issue of the Review and a scathing article on the situation in this country and the solution to right the ship.

Anecdotal Evidence

Stories from the Life of a Saskatchewan Veterinarian Bales for Christmas by Harvey Domoslai The following story is an excerpt from the book “Anecdotal Evidence” by author Harvey Domoslai

T

he summer of 76 was dry, but the rains came when they had to and we had a good hay crop to take off. All through the long hot days of July my Dad, my six brothers and I baled the hay lands, the sloughs and the ditches with the old New Holland square baler. The crop was thick and regularly plugged the old baler and snapped one cotter pin after another. But as the baler swallowed up the swath, the bale counter counted higher and higher, soon reaching record levels. We quickly filled the barn loft beetling the heavy green bales up the elevator to the waiting hands of the unlucky stackers in the stifling dusty heat. Then, a new bale yard large enough to handle the bountiful harvest was created and rack by rack and day by day we began constructing a bale stack to rival them all. The stack was built interlocking like Lego and was a solid as the ancient pyramids. Over the course of the haying season the stack grew and grew to 20 bales high at the peak, tapered to shed the rain and snow. We finished the stack in mid-August with some slough hay and a few green feed bales and there she stood… a monstrous monolithic mass of bales reaching for the sky. The stack was a testament to our summer’s work and as school started and summer’s heat turned to fall’s cool, the giant stack reminded us that like good hard-working ants, we were ready for winter. It was a grey cool day in early November when Mom and Dad decided to go to town and left the kids in charge of my oldest brother, who was out of school at the time. He met me and my other brothers as we got off the bus, with his pellet gun in hand, eager to show us what he had been doing. He had discovered that by cutting down wooden matches and sticking them in the pellet gun, they would go off with a crack and puff of smoke if they were shot against something hard. After a half hour of his firepower demonstration, we were all off to start doing chores and milk the cows, ex-

cept for my two youngest brothers, who by virtue of their age only had to feed the chickens. My older brothers match demonstration had apparently lit the fires of imagination in their young minds and they grabbed some matches and decided to light a little fire. The wind quickly blew out the matches as they tried to light a pile of grass in the dirt yard… so, what better place to start a fire but in the lee of the giant hay stack… 14 hours later as the firefighters packed their truck and left the farm, all that remained was a half-foot of black volcanic rock-like remnants of the bales. They had not been able to save a single bale. The loss of the bale stack put the farm in a real financial bind. Neighbors helped a lot and we scavenged as much ditch hay as we could before the snow came, but we were going to be short and had to buy feed. My one brother worked off the farm and contributed his wage to buying hay, but basically every penny that the farm had went into buying bales to get the cows through winter. It was about mid-December when Mom said that maybe we wouldn’t be able to have too much for Christmas. All the kids were disappointed to be sure, but we knew that the cows had to come first and it wasn’t like we didn’t have anything to eat. Christmas came and just like Mom said, Santa missed our house except for the few small stocking gifts and a family game or two. We moped around all Christmas holidays and every time we fed the cows old ditch hay or poor quality bought hay we were reminded of what might have been. The New Year approached and as we prepared for our return to school and the embarrassment of the ‘what did you get for Christmas’ questions, we got news of a large parcel at the bus station. The parcel was brought home and out of the box, just like Santa’s toy bag, flowed gifts for everyone. My bachelor uncle in Vancouver had heard of our misfortune and decided that out of his good fortune he would help us. I still remember those gifts and the joy they brought us that late December evening, a reminder of how blessed we are.

necdotal Evidence is a collection of short stories and snippets collected from a life as a veterinarian on the Canadian prairies. Dr. Harvey Domoslai has been a veterinarian for close to twenty-five years, balancing rugged, large animal field work with the intricacies of a big-city small animal clinic. Many of these stories have previously appeared as a monthly byline in the RM Review newspaper. The stories touch on the emotional and life affirming qualities that are brought out when working with creatures of all sizes. Some stories are funny, some are sad, but all are guaranteed to touch you in some way if you love animals. The book is available directly from the author at Coman Park Veterinary Service on Highway 14 or online at www.lulu.com

s 2020 draws to a close, I want to personally thank all of you who have reached out to both myself and my office with your questions and concerns during this pandemic. While our office has been busier than ever with inquiries and correspondence I am grateful for your engagement. Canadians have legitimate questions regarding the positions being taken by their elected representatives, decisions being made by their governments and the plan for a path forward which will see them get their lives back. That is why it is so alarming to hear the pushback on citizens who are clearly engaged and asking critical questions. Last week I addressed Prime Minister Trudeau’ s own comments on “the reset” and his response to Canadians. This week we learned of Trudeau’s continuing naive approach to communist China and how dangerous it is for Canada. On December 10 The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, released the following statement: “I am very concerned. Canada’s entanglement with Communist China under Justin Trudeau is worse than anyone could have imagined.

MP REPORT Canadians Deserve Answers, Not Name-Calling

prairie sun

Kelly Block, MP December 14, 2020

“Global Affairs Canada, under influence from the Trudeau Liberals, has been pressuring Canada’s military to have joint exercises and cooperation with the Communist Chinese military: the People’s Liberation Army. “Justin Trudeau has ignored the advice of our military and allies for years on China. This dangerously naïve approach has put Canada at risk, over and over again. “Today is the anniversary of the illegal abduction and imprisonment of two innocent Canadians in China. For months, China has unfairly targeted our farmers. For years, the Chinese Communist Party has been carrying out the mass internment of the Uyghurs in concentration camps. “And still the Liberals keep pushing for more involvement with China. “Our military wanted to end joint exercises with China because the theft of intellectual property, cyberespionage, and influence operations are not an occasional occurrence with China, they are the norm.

“Let me be very clear. China does not act like a partner or a friend. It is time the Trudeau government stops the dangerous influence of Chinese money and operatives. “The government’s new framework with respect to Communist China needs to be implemented now. “The government needs to wake up – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s naïve approach to China must stop now.”

Canadians deserve answers, and they deserve to be treated with respect. This Liberal government cannot continue to dismiss their concerns. Rest assured that I, along with my colleagues, will continue to fight for Canadians, and push for the prosperity of our nation.

COMMUNITY REPORTS

5

Delisle & District Fire and Rescue 2020 Year in Review

D

elisle & District Fire and Rescue has been busy this year, both in their emergency responses and through community outreach activities. Our call volume was down this year, which is a wonderful thing. We amassed a total of 56 calls through the year, and our First Responders saw 145 calls. We saw some very tragic endings but were blessed with some wonderful ones, including the birth of a beautiful baby on the side of Highway 7. The Delisle & District Volunteer Fire-Fighters Association has worked hard this year to fundraise in a difficult climate. We were very fortunate to have a huge response to our bottle drive, as well as a gymkhana held in support of our department. Donations from SaskPower, Nutrien, and a multitude of other businesses and individuals have helped us reach our fundraising goals for the year. We have been working towards enough money to purchase a fire extinguisher trainer kit, which will be used not only for our crews but for community groups and businesses in a wide area. We believe that this is an essential piece of training for everyone, regardless of their situations, and we are excited to be close to reaching our financial goal of $20,000 towards that purchase. We also plan on providing a bursary to a graduate student in coming years, supporting projects such as the Angel Tree, providing uniforms and “swag” to be available for purchase by our members, and supporter swag for further fundraising. Other use of funds include purchasing decorations, candy, supplies, and miscellaneous items

for projects such as Halloween, Santa Parade, thank you cards, food and refreshments for members in meetings or training, further training opportunities for members, the list goes on. We are so grateful for the support of our communities in reaching these goals. As a department, our members have been busy in community outreach. The Pike Lake hall undertook a huge project to build a display for the Festival of Lights in Pike Lake this year. The crew in that hall created an outstanding display including a huge wooden firetruck with Christmas trees, moving flames, and Santa holding a lit hose. Back in early December our crew were fortunate enough to be part of a fundraiser for the Saskatoon Dog Rescue, and are now front cover superstars on the 2021 Hunks ‘n’ Hounds calendar. A small group of our members embarked on a mission to rejuvenate the Angel Tree in Delisle and its surrounding communities. We partnered with Nutrien and our wider community to provide 43 families with gifts and food hampers for Christmas, and saw smiles a mile wide. This was truly a heart project and we can’t wait to build on it in the coming year. After a passionate message from one of our community’s younger members, we put together a Santa Parade, in which we were able to secure Santa for a day during his busy time, and put him on the back of our #5 unit for a trip around Delisle, Vanscoy and Pike Lake. We saw many, many young people as well as many older folks out to see the big man, and had a wonderful day bringing more smiles to more faces. This has been a difficult year for everyone, our own members included. It has seen the loss of work and financial stability, safety and emotional security, family closeness and sporting activities. But we believe that we will come out of it stronger if we all work together to bring smiles to those around us. We couldn’t do this without the support of our communities and their businesses.
