Asquith Fire Department Pig Roast & Auction
O
n June 10, 2017 the Asquith Fire Department and the Asquith First Responders held their Pig Roast Supper and Auction. This event was originally initiated in 2011 to help AFD/AFR raise funds to cover the purchase of extrication tools. Building on the success of the first supper and auction, AFD/AFR hosted similar events in 2014 and 2016; each year adding different attractions and venues. The latest rendition of the Pig Roast included a show and shine, beer gardens, afternoon DJ, bouncy castle and dunk tank, barbecue lunch and fencing demonstration provided by the fencing club, the Cotton Candy man, supper, silent and live auctions and a street dance.
The flow of attendees throughout the day was constant and all of the events attracted people for either a view, a bite, a drink or friendly discussion. The pig was the main attraction as it was being roasted all day at the front of the Elk’s Hall; the smell was amazing and had people anticipating supper. The show and shine featured 25 vehicles and included old classics, new muscle cars, semi-trucks, motorcycles and even an army service truck. The fencing club filled bellies in the afternoon with burgers and hot dogs and gave fencing demonstrations throughout the day. The hall and beer gardens were packed at supper and everyone enjoyed the meal; all 200 tickets were sold and then some. The auction was well attended and all the donated items
went quickly. The street dance finished off the day with a live band. The people of the Asquith Fire Department and the Asquith First Responders are constantly surprised and amazed at the support shown by the residents, businesses and organizations of Asquith and surrounding area. Without this support we would not be able to continue doing what we do. We would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success this year. Whether you contributed through a donation, volunteered your time, gave of your business or came to enjoy the event; your contribution is greatly appreciated. Mere words cannot express our gratitude. Food for Thought The Cluttered Stage
T
Standing out are Germany and Canada as the stable democracies in a sea of political turmoil. China is still struggling to be wholly accepted as a political leader even though it is a key world trader. Canada has staked out a new international position by thumbing our collective noses at not so much the US administration, but Trump particularly. Hopefully Trump is not long in the position of President so the threat of a mouse at an elephant will be null and void.
T
he Delisle Community Chapel held a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, June 4, to mark the beginning of a construction project to install a vertical lift elevator. A recent renovation of the church basement created “The Gathering Place”, an ideal space for church and community gatherings, complete with excellent kitchen facilities. However, access to the lower level of the building requires traveling a long staircase, making it inaccessible to some seniors and others with physical limitations. The congregation decided that an elevator was needed to better serve the needs of all the citizens of Delisle and area.
The worship service had a celebratory atmosphere, as the congregation gave thanks to God for the generosity of the people and organizations that supported the effort. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $74,000, and all of the money needed to complete the work is now in hand. A major grant was received from Employment and Social Development Canada. Other grants were received from the Be In Christ Church of Canada, and two anonymous foundations. Delisle-born jazz singer Graham Dyck gave a fund-raising concert to a packed house, and members and supporters of DCC, along with local businesses, contributed generously. Pastor Herb Anderson commented on the fact that the Delisle Community Chapel has had an unbroken ministry in the area for well over 100 years. He quipped that “the congregation has had its ups and downs during that time, and once the elevator is installed there will be a lot more of them.”
Delisle Mayor Dave Anderchek Breaking Ground at Chapel
Kelly Block, MP June 23, 2017
Honored guests included Mayor Dave Anderchek, who noted that the church would be the first structure in Delisle to have an elevator. Graham Shackleton, chair of Delisle Seniors, extended congratulations, and Doug Sider, Executive Director of the Be In Christ Church of Canada traveled from Oakville, Ontario to offer a blessing. Written greetings were received from Kelly Block, MP for Carlton Trail – Eagle Creek. At the conclusion of the service, the entire congregation walked in procession to the rear of the building, past the newly erected church sign, where a symbolic sod turning took place.

he world stage grows ever more cluttered with each passing week; some changes are helpful but most just add to the already great confusion. France for example, that threatened to go far right came around to elect a centrist president with little or no political baggage. On the other hand Teresa May made a serious miscalculation and lost her Conservative majority, just as the Brexit negotiations are to commence. Donald Trump continues to confound everyone with his unpredictable moves. A new hot spot has been created by the Arab States in isolating Qatar which is totally dependent on imported supplies.

ow that construction is in full swing again for the year, a lot of that yellow iron you see working along the highway is being run by a woman. According to the latest (August 2016) Women in the Labour Force Report (Sask. Status of Women Office), between 2010 and 2015 numbers of women working in construction, transportation and warehousing, resources and utilities increased substantially, an increase in areas where traditionally women were least likely to work. Their employment increased the most in construction, an impressive 36.2%. Heavy equipment training opportunities are readily available in Saskatchewan, ranging from a one week, 60 hour program on one piece of equipment to a four week, 240 hour program that includes training on four pieces of equipment, usually excavator, grader, dozer, and articulated truck. Fees are not cheap, but certificates earned don’t expire and provide a working lifetime of opportunities and an escape from the tyranny of minimum wages. Average hourly rates for heavy equipment opera-
tors are $24.59 per hour and range from 17.28 to $35.59 (www.payscale.com). More and more women are opting in and those who do are earning praise. Union leaders and training managers interviewed for Equipment World website say that women operators are cautious and conscientious, avail themselves of new training opportunities, take good care of their machines, value the job and probably try harder because they are working in a non-traditional environment. The construction industry in Saskatchewan has seen the number of women in its ranks swell from 4700 in 2010 to 6300 in 2015. While only a few of these jobs were heavy equipment operators, the numbers increased from 200 in 2015 to 300 in 2016. Adapting to change and dealing with an unpredictable job market are a challenge, but it seems one readily accepted by Saskatchewan women. Submitted by Norma Hill
MP REPORT
Liberals Stumble Into the Summer Break
he spring session of the House of Commons ended this past Wednesday evening.
At the end of what was a very turbulent session for the Liberal Government, the House rose with the Liberals bungling the passage of Bill C-44, its 2017 Budget Implementation Act. Justin Trudeau’s plans for the Senate have been smoke and mirrors from the start. First Trudeau expelled Liberal Senators from the Liberal Caucus, removing their primary link to the Party leadership. Despite all appearances, these Senators remained Liberals. As Prime Minister, Trudeau declared that he would appoint only “independent” senators, these independent senators are Liberal in all but name. This group of senators are actually most likely to vote with the Government than any other Senate caucus. However,
even this pro-Liberal Senate was able to recognize some of the flaws in Bill C-44. This week, the Government was attempting to finish passing its budget implementation bill through the Senate. Two parts of the Bill were rightfully pointed out for criticism: the proposed Canada Infrastructure Bank and the escalator tax on alcohol. As was pointed out in the House of Commons, the Senate identified that the infrastructure bank is a massive undertaking that would put billions of taxpayer dollars on the line. Many Senators rightly acknowledged that the creation of such a large institution should not be created as part of a large omnibus bill but deserved proper scrutiny and consideration. This is especially concerning since the present model of the infrastructure bank is a potential boondoggle that could put billions of taxpayer dollars at risk.
The Senate also determined that creating an escalator tax on alcohol was an affront to democratic accountability. This .( / / < %/ 2&.#3$5/ *& &$ ::: .( / / < %/ 2&.03 &$ measure allows taxes on things like beer, lator tax on liquor passed the Senate, wine, and spirits to continue to increase but was then rejected by Liberals in the indefinitely without the Government House of Commons. This rejection in the needing to go to Parliament for apHouse sent the Bill back to the Senate, proval. where Liberal Senators finally yielded When the Senate indicated their concern regarding these two issues, the Government responded with its characteristic arrogance. Instead of working with the Upper Chamber to improve the Bill, they expressed indignity that the Senate would exercise its constitutionally-mandated prerogative to review legislation. A proposed amendment to remove the infrastructure bank from the Bill was narrowly defeated on a tie vote. The Senate amendment to remove the esca-
and passed the Bill.
To pass this Bill, Liberals were forced to rely on dubious constitutional arguments and overt pressure on Senators to acquiesce to their demands. Even the Senate, with the majority of its membership appointed by Liberal Prime Ministers, saw the flaws of Bill C-44. Liberal intransigence on considering any changes and its poor handling of the Senate has again demonstrated how arrogant and ineffectual the governing Liberals have become.

PRAIRIE ChERRY PIT
rairie Cherry Pit is a family run business. We are a U-pick orchard. We have been part of the Vanscoy area for 31 years, but only opened the orchard 8 years ago. When Carol & Ernie moved to their humble little acreage they had no idea that they would be growing cherries on their land. They have always had farming interests but cherries on the prairie? Carol has always loved getting dirty, when it comes to growing plants anyway. Ernie is very willing to get up early to start working the field. So it’s only natural they would make a great team in an orchard. I (Amanda) moved back home to my parents place when they were just starting to learn about prairie hardy cherries. I have learned much more with them in their venture. We have all put a lot of ourselves into these trees. This year has started off well enough. Like most farmers we would like to see a little more rain, but you can only deal with what Mother Nature offers you, unless you have irrigation, which we do on about a third of the orchard anyway. We have Haskap berries & raspberries as well. The Haskap berries seem to be a favorite for the Cedar Wax Wing birds. Each year they bloom and produce their fruit, but before the fruit can even ripen, the birds have striped the bushes. We have tried netting the rows, which can help but of course there are other issues like birds getting caught & dying, the wind pulling the net up & stripping fruit off. So we are still looking to see if there are better alternatives. The cherries & raspberries look to be doing very well this year. We grow 5 varieties of cherries. Some varieties are better for preserves, & some are a really nice eating cherry. All of the cherries we grow have been bred by
the University of Saskatchewan. They are all sour cherries, but don’t let that fool you; they are a great fruit to eat. I like using the Valentine cherry for juice, Carmine Jewel for pies. My favorite fresh cherry was Cupid but I’m thinking it’s changed. I can’t decide between the Romeo & Juliet. We grow the Red Mammoth raspberries. They are a lovely large fruit that is sweet for a raspberry. We will be opening the orchard July 29th for cherry picking. We’re not sure when the raspberries are ready, but will let our Facebook followers know when fruit becomes ripe. We will be open daily at that point, with hours of 9 am till 5 pm. I recommend picking in the morning when it’s cooler. Bring plenty of water & a good pail for picking your fruit. All of our fruit is $3.00/lb. We are looking forward to seeing our regular customers, & welcoming new customers to our orchard. Come & enjoy our fruit with your friends & family.

FARMING REPORTS Kari Burnett BSA, PAg Farm Business Management Specialist
T
hank you to Rachel Kraynick, BSA, PAg, Regional Farm Business Management Specialist in the Yorkton office for providing this article. Mark Twain once said that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that it is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long. Your “frog” is the biggest, most important task that you are most likely to procrastinate on if you don’t do something about it. Twain also said that if you have to eat two frogs, eat the biggest,

juiciest one first. In other words, if you have two important tasks to do, start with the bigger task first. And above all else, if you have to eat a live frog, it doesn’t pay to sit and look at it for a very long time. So don’t wait… don’t procrastinate….Just start!!! These words of wisdom couldn’t be more accurate when it comes to your farm business management skills. What important things are you putting off that need your attention? Here are the top four “Frogs” I see in terms of farm business management: Succession Planning: If you are part of a multigenerational family, do you have a solid plan in place to transfer the farm to the next generation? Have you initiated the conversation with your family members as to when you want to retire? How can this transition plan occur in a financially viable way? Do you have a current will? What about contingency plans to enable continued farm management under unforeseen circumstances? Do you know how you will deal with the nonfarming children? Do you know how to value sweat equity? Even though these conversations can be tough or emotionally charged, they need to happen sooner than later. Finding the right tools and resources to help you address these issues are priceless. Financial Management: When it comes to money, everyone’s priority is different. You may have good intentions to start paying down debt, to start saving for your retirement or to gain a solid understanding of your financial situation, yet you never do. Having a financial management plan in place
will not only mitigate financial disasters, but it can help to make purchasing decisions based on your financial situation and not on emotion or gut feeling. i.e.: Should you purchase more land because it is part of your business strategy and your operation can afford to? Or are you doing it because “you may not get this chance again” even though it sets you back more than you can afford? Realize that bigger may not be better, but better is better. Knowing your financial situation when making decisions will prevent you from biting off more than you can chew. Business Strategy: Do you and your farming partners have a clear vision of where you’re headed? Have you set some short and long term farm and family goals? Is this plan reviewed and updated regularly to guide you in every decision the farm makes? Since each individual has a different definition of what success means to them, you may set goals in reference to the size of the farm, profitability levels, or even work life balance issues. Having a solid business strategy plan helps you work smarter, not harder. It’s important not to confuse activity with accomplishment. Lack of strategy = lack of direction Lack of direction = business chaos Business chaos= a state of disorder due to poor management Don’t let this be you…

have a written strategy plan and is reviewed regularly. Human Resources: Hiring the right people for your farm can be priceless. Headlong into harvest and working long hours, with little sleep, it may become apparent that you should have hired some extra help. Or perhaps your operation is getting to a size that you can’t effectively handle all the duties yourself. You need a plan to attract, engage and retain qualified staff so you’re running at your optimum. Having an understanding that labor is an investment, not an expense. A detailed human resource plan can significantly affect a farms profitability and efficiency. You may be telling yourself, “I’ll get around to these tasks when I have more time, more money, or when I get through another production year”. But don’t wait any longer…eat your frog one bite at a time and stop letting anxiety, fear, or insecurity hold you back. Remember that successful, effective operators are those who address the important issues head on with a disciplined, focused approach. Real growth occurs when we dare to step out of our comfort zones. To get started planning for success, contact me at 306778-8216 or our Agriculture Knowledge Centre at 1-866-4572377.

2017 CROP HAIL INSURANCE AvAILABLE AT MOONEY AGENCIES
I
t's that time again to consider your hail insurance plans for the coming season. The economic impact of losing your crop in a severe hail storm could be devastating. Hail insurance is available for all types of crops ranging from $10 to $400 per acre (without exceeding actual value of your crop). Rates depend on your land location, township and type of crop. Coverage begins at noon on the day following the date of policy purchase and expires by October 15. Deferred payment options also available at minimal or no cost. If you have an insurable interest in a crop then you can purchase hail insurance, including the land owner if rental payment will not be received until after harvest!
Do you understand the various Disappearing Deductible options available? Deductible options are highly effective at increasing your per acre coverage. They are used to cover more of your profits than input costs with higher payment potential for the most severe storms. Deductible options often work best in conjunction with full coverage but can be purchased stand alone. For example, consider "20D" deductible option typically 65-70% of full cover rate and the deductible disappears at 60% crop loss. The deductible starts reducing at 40% loss until it reaches 60% when it completely disappears. Under the "20D" hail insurance deductible option you can purchase per acre limits on average 50% higher than full coverage for a similar price! Mooney Agencies is pleased to provide you crop hail insurance rates from multiple compa-
nies, various deductible options, explain claims procedures and no cost deferred payment options. Mooney Agencies is an independent insurance broker, working for you rather than an insurance company or financial institution. We will properly assess your general insurance needs, shop for the best value in coverage and help you in the event of a claim. Mooney Agencies provides specialized advice for your farm or acreage, along with providing home, auto and commercial insurance solutions anywhere in Saskatchewan. We are available to meet at your home, acreage, farm or business by appointment. Please introduce yourself to your Mooney Agencies insurance team – Stephanie & Landry Klapwijk, Della O’Hara, Michelle Larson and Courtney Klapwijk.
