SIXTH FORM WEEKLY BULLETIN Friday 10th March 2017

Issue No: 34

Message from Mrs Freeman Whilst writing this, a group of Year 12 and 13 students are sitting outside in our new garden enjoying the sunshine. Summer is definitely on the way! And with summer, come exams! I want to take this opportunity to remind the Sixth Formers that preparation is the key to exam success; everyone should have their revision plans ready for the end of term so that the first week of Easter is not spent drawing up a revision plan in 3 different ways and in umpteen different colours. Every plan should include revision as well as rest and every plan should not just be about staring at notes for an hour. Below I have listed some of my top tips for revision which I hope might help at least one parent who has run out of ideas! As I keep reminding the girls, I was young once and I do remember the exam summers which felt like they would never end. I promise you they do, and with hard work and determination the next door of your life opens; how exciting is that! Mrs Freeman's tips for revision 

Keep it active by 'doing' revision rather than just looking at it or rewriting your notes

Write out key points on post it notes and stick them on the toilet door/fridge/roof of your bedroom

Read out your notes to a recorder (it was a tape recorder in my day) and play it to yourself in the car/garden/bed (I used to play it under my pillow at night with the idea that I would dream about it)

Choose a topic to discuss with your family around the dinner table

Take apart the schemes of work and write questions using the phrases from it - can you then write an answer to your questions?

Re-do any substandard piece of work you have done throughout the course based on your teachers' feedback - hand it in to check you have improved.

Create a google doc in a working group and post questions for others to answer and then each of you can add to it to improve it

Message from Fenella From now until the end of term, these next few weeks are filled with numerous performing arts events that feature various members of the Sixth Form... The Spectrum Dance Show took place on Wednesday and Thursday evening, and I've been hearing nothing but great praise! Additionally, next week, The Lion King will be put on by the Prep Department in the Great Hall and, despite there not being any Sixth Formers involved, I'm sure Hind House will be happy to go along and support the creativity of Year 4 to 6 - not to mention sing along to tunes that were so incredibly beloved in our childhood! Finally, we have the Spring Concert on the 28th March which I'm really looking forward too, if slightly melancholy that it will be the Year 13 musicians' last RMS concert. But, a lot of things to look forward to, Hind House! Have a great weekend, everybody! Fenella

Institution of Mechanical Engineers Event “Engineering Your Future” The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) will be hosting our annual one-day free careers event for sixth form students, titled 'Engineering Your Future' on the 17th March 2017 at the IMechE headquarters in Westminster. The day is split into five sessions, which provide an overview of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, each of which lasts approximately 45 minutes. There is also a “speed” networking session, hosted by representatives from companies, colleges, universities, the two Institutions, and other engineering projects; the attendees will rotate around the different tables giving them an opportunity to talk to the hosts and find out more about their specialised subjects The students will have the opportunity to meet young engineers and ask them about their route into engineering and their experience of being an engineer. Young engineers from different engineering disciplines will be present and therefore is a great way for students who are not sure about which discipline to choose. Pupils will gain an understanding into the scope offered by a career in Engineering, the various routes into Engineering, what they can expect, and what their careers could entail. The other four sessions are hands-on workshops hosted by four engineering companies, again representing the different engineering disciplines. This year Aker Solutions, AECOM and Firstco will be taking part. Please find attached a brochure complete with booking form for the event. As it is an event fully funded by the IMechE and IET, there are limited number of places. Therefore, if you are interested please do book asap by completing the form on the back page of the brochure and returning it to Joanna Li-Mayer at glrymvcevents@imechenearyou.org
