SIXTH FORM WEEKLY BULLETIN Friday 3rd March 2017
Issue No: 33
Message from Mrs Freeman I love my job! I wonder how many people reading this can say the same thing. I also wonder how many jobs have the great diversity that mine does. During the exciting parts of my week I learnt about how as part of L.E.A.D. 9 groups had each grown their £1 into a total of over £600 in a variety of ingenious ways (including persuading a 6 year old neighbour to take on the task herself!); I have sat and listened to prospective parents telling me how impressed they were with the Sixth Form student who showed them around - no need for me to do any more persuading; I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching a Year 8 class alongside a Sixth Former, Caitlin, who clearly has an excellent rapport with the girls; I have each day carried a plate of 12 doughnuts along the corridor to Hind House for the wonderful 10 for tea we are running; and I have learnt a great deal about American universities from Sophie's superb assembly yesterday. On the more mundane side of things I have written my Year 12 reports (all wonderful of course), completed a huge pile of marking (yes that is yours too Year 12!) and tidied my office in a hopeless attempt to find a DVD that I know is somewhere. Every day for me has excitement, and happiness, as well as frustration and sometimes sadness; but ultimately if you love what you do then the journey into work each day is one that you look forward to. As I finish off the A Level syllabus I am teaching, I reflect that the girls in Year 13 are nearing the end of their educational journey here at RMS. I hope that each and everyone one of them finds a job that they love as they move into the big wide world!
Message from Fenella Having been in Glasgow for the first two days of this school week, I unfortunately have little to tell about the “goings-on” of Hind House! However, I have been informed that it is World Book Day today, so thought I’d take the opportunity to learn about some of Hind House’s favourite books. Pride and Prejudice, Emily B’s favourite book, is a much-loved, classic novel that I feel will never fail to impress those in search of a beautiful love story. The series of Harry Potter books were also deemed extremely popular, with both Aurelia and Sophie M favouring Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and its action-packed story-line very highly. Lastly, The Color Purple, a novel by Alice Walker, was thoroughly enjoyed by Turaya . Hearing about Hind House’s most-loved novels, further highlights the individuality of its students. I am one of those guilty of not taking the time to prioritise a good book, and therefore am determined to change this, and perhaps even select one of those highlighted above. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Institution of Mechanical Engineers Event “Engineering Your Future” The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) will be hosting our annual one-day free careers event for sixth form students, titled 'Engineering Your Future' on the 17th March 2017 at the IMechE headquarters in Westminster. The day is split into five sessions, which provide an overview of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, each of which lasts approximately 45 minutes. There is also a “speed” networking session, hosted by representatives from companies, colleges, universities, the two Institutions, and other engineering projects; the attendees will rotate around the different tables giving them an opportunity to talk to the hosts and find out more about their specialised subjects The students will have the opportunity to meet young engineers and ask them about their route into engineering and their experience of being an engineer. Young engineers from different engineering disciplines will be present and therefore is a great way for students who are not sure about which discipline to choose. Pupils will gain an understanding into the scope offered by a career in Engineering, the various routes into Engineering, what they can expect, and what their careers could entail. The other four sessions are hands-on workshops hosted by four engineering companies, again representing the different engineering disciplines. This year Aker Solutions, AECOM and Firstco will be taking part. Please find attached a brochure complete with booking form for the event. As it is an event fully funded by the IMechE and IET, there are limited number of places. Therefore, if you are interested please do book asap by completing the form on the back page of the brochure and returning it to Joanna Li-Mayer at glrymvcevents@imechenearyou.org
