SCHOOL NEWS Lindsay Cole Visit—Courage to Challenge Yourself As January’s Value of the Month is “Courage to Challenge Oneself”, we were delighted to welcome the adventurer and storyteller Lindsey Cole to RMS today. She told us the fascinating story of walking along the Rabbit Proof Fence in the Outback of Western Australia, re-tracing the steps of Molly, Daisy and Gracie. These were three young Aboriginal girls who were part of Australia’s “Stolen Generation”, but managed to escape from a government settlement in 1931 and trek almost 1000 miles home by following the fence. Lindsey had never been to the Outback before, and her survival skills were limited to having been a Girl Guide, so she was trained up for her adventure by survival expert Bob Cooper. Her adventure varied from examining spider webs in the fence, naming her trolley Trevor and the fence Philomena, to wondering through a ghost town and having breakfast with emus. There were of course also lows, including getting lost where sections of the fence was missing, while at other points encountering camel and emu families that had been split up on either side of the fence – luckily Lindsey managed to re-unite the emus, and the camels eventually found a crossing point themselves. After the huge effort of trekking each day, nothing could compare to the majesty of the stars at night. To finish her journey, Lindsey was lucky enough to walk into Jigalong with Molly’s daughter Maria, and later also met Daisy herself. All of this was a unique experience that only came about because Lindsey had the courage to challenge herself. Thank you for a fascinating visit, and we look forward to reading the book when it gets released. Thank you to Mrs Bloomfield-Proud for organising this inspirational afternoon!

SCHOOL NEWS Maths Visit to “It All Adds Up” Last week a group of Year 10 mathematicians travelled to the Mathematical Institute in Oxford. The purpose of the event is to inspire female students to continue studying Maths, spending the day learning about and engaging in all things Maths! Here are the thoughts of just two of the students who attended:

Our trip to Oxford for getting inspired about Maths was very interesting and impressive, as different speakers talked about different aspects about Maths, for example, the relationship between Maths and a chocolate fountain and how to guess the percentage of rubbish in the ocean. One of my favourite parts was about sport—the speaker talked about which areas are statistically likely to be the most successful from which to score a goal—and we got to put this into practice too! This trip showed me Maths is always around me and full of mysteries for me to explore. Vicky I really enjoyed the trip to “It All Adds Up” as it allowed me to learn more about what is involved in studying Maths at a higher level and understand more about the different mathematical careers that are available. My favourite lecture was one by the Professor of Statistics at Oxford University, Jennifer Rodgers. She taught us about how statistics are used in everyday life and their importance, especially in the digital age in which we live today. This allowed me to see “real world” applications of the Maths that I am just beginning to learn about in the classroom. Thank you to Mrs Cubbon and the Maths Department for organising the day which was both fun and informative! Charlie

SPORTS RESULTS Last week’s results Netball RMS vs St Clement Danes Year 8 A Team lost 9 - 14, Year 9 A Team won 34-4, Year 9 B Team won 29-1 This was the first match of the new season, and the girls played well and worked hard as a team. We had lots of motivational talks during the breaks and the girls worked well to implement these changes. Shooting on target was good and Emily R worked hard to defend our goal. Great team effort. Special mention to Jana who was POTM. The Year 9 teams got 2018 off to a fantastic start. The A Team racked up a large goal difference in the first two quarters and played out of position for the second half of the game. They won by an impressive 34-4. The MVP was Nia. The B team played equally well showing some excellent netball skills and the game finished 29-1. The MVP was Heidi.

This week’s results Netball RMS vs Watford Girls Year 10A Team won 26-8 The Year 10A netball team played an outstanding game on Monday. They stormed ahead after the second quarter and continued to work hard to increase their lead throughout the second half, winning 26-8. Well done to all the girls who played a fantastic game!

RMS vs Aldenham Year 8 A Team won 10-5, Year 8 B Team won 12-0 Very quick moving game and the girls did well to move the ball and send it into the shooting circle. Emily Roycroft was great in defence, intercepting the ball and marking her player. The attacking group got in front of their players and supported the shooters on the edge of the circle. Both teams had to swap on and off each quarter so the girls did well to rest and discuss their moves and implement these straight away. Passes were good and accurate which helped move the ball around the court and into the shooting circle. A Team POTM was Siena and B Team was Annabelle

Hockey County Cup RMS vs Presdales Year 9 won 2-0 This was the first game of the season and the girls worked well as team passing the ball down and across the astro. The first goal was scored very quickly by Freya. The weather got worse throughout the game but the girls were unaffected by this and scored the second goal in the second half. Great performance and two more County Cup matches to go. Congratulations to POTM Freya W. FOR UP TO DATE NEWS AND RESULTS FROM OUR PE DEPARTMENT, FOLLOW THEM ON TWITTER

FORMS NEWS FORMS AGM—Thursday 1st March Our AGM is coming up on the 1st March and all parents are welcome to attend. At this meeting, we will be re-electing several committee members; some are due to be re-elected as per our constitution, and others are going to be re-elected because current officers are stepping down. We are in particular need to fill in the Treasurer position. Our current treasurer is stepping down after many years of great service and we are looking for someone to take over this key position. The main responsibilities are: 

to maintain financial records

provide cash floats,

count and bank the taking of the events

prepare and co-sign cheques when needed.

Also once a year the treasurer would need to prepare annual statements for AGM.

It is a very important position without which FORMS cannot function. Knowledge of accounting and book keeping would be desirable. If you or someone you know will be interested in this position, please get in touch on forms.chair@gmail.com.

Saturday 10th March: SAVE THE DATE for the FORMS Quiz Night Don't forget to put 10th March in your dairy. Our annual Quiz Night is promising to be a great night with usual pub quiz food of fish and chips (there will also be a vegetarian option) and plenty of drink to make any intellectual efforts more fun. So start putting your team together! Tickets page coming soon!

Have a lovely weekend! FORMS
