about the security of the site following last weekend’s incident of an intruder into the main
of our pupils and staff is paramount and we regularly review our on-site arrangements. You may be aware that last year, we changed the location of the barrier in the Car Park to restrict vehicular access to the school in order to ensure the safety of pedestrians on site as well as improving general security. The barrier is manned between 8.00am and 6.00pm during term time to closely monitor the Car Park and ensure the safety of pupils walking in and around this area. We are now working with the Police Crime Prevention Officer to improve other aspects such as our lighting, signage and CCTV, and to restrict visitor access where possible. As you are aware, the school site is large so the latter can be challenging. However, we will continue to make adjustments and improvements, with pupil

RMS TO MAJOR TIM! Excitement is mounting ahead of our planned contact with Major Tim Peake on board the International Space Station, and we have a wealth of activities planned in the lead up to the contact itself. As yet, we still do not have a confirmed day for this, but it will be in the week beginning 8th February – we will be informed of the day on 1st February, so will of course inform you as soon as we know! Once we do, an invitation will be sent out to parents using the eventbrite system (you may be familiar with this through booking tickets for Performing Arts performances). It will be free to attend but we need to allocate tickets. The system will allow you to book one adult ticket and 4 child tickets (pupils of the school only), and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. All boarders will automatically be allocated a ticket. We will send you the link to the invitation early in the week beginning 1 st February. In the meantime, here are some of the activities we have planned…
Year 7 will be building scale models of the solar system
Year 8 will be building scale models of the International Space Station
Year 9 will be building a radio receiver with the help of the Radio Society of Great Britain, who are visiting the school on 3rd February
Year 10 will be cooking a comet, and taking part in FUNCube Satellite tracking – for more information about this, see their website www.funcube.org.uk
Year 11 will be studying life on the International Space Station and taking part in a variety of activities
Year 13 will be studying Kepler’s Laws of planetary motion

RMS TO MAJOR TIM There are numerous other non Science based activities – in PE, girls will be learning to train like an astronaut; in English, girls will be writing application letters to be part of a team going to Mars; in Food and Nutrition, girls will be learning about food in space; and in Religious Studies, there will be a philosophical discussion about space exploration. Our Languages department will be sending messages to the astronauts in all the languages studied at RMS, and our artists will be producing space inspired works of art. The girls have all been invited to supply questions they would like to ask to Major Tim Peake at the event itself, and the Science Department have drawn up a shortlist of the best questions – girls will be informed whether their question has been selected or not. We are particularly excited to report that the Radio Society of Great Britain will be coming into school to train a group of girls to the level needed to get their foundation level licence, which will enable them to operate the radio to make the contact with the ISS. Letters have been sent out the parents of girls invited to do this and we wish them all well with their training – they will only have one day to complete what is usually a three day programme, but we have every confidence the girls selected will do a fantastic job – good luck girls!
